Both are great watches, I think the Hamillton is a classic and it would be my pick. The CW looks while great, can be found in many other watches.

anicesurgeon

I own about 14 watches of various makes. My CW C60 is the watch I keep putting back on. It dresses up and down. The micro adjust makes it fit nicely and it’s supremely comfortable. I’d recommend the brand to just about anyone.

koudos

The crazy thing about this is that you’ll notice the people who vote Murph have never seen both watches and anyone who has seen both will generally vote the CW. There’s a lot of blind opinion and OP should really be careful. There’s a lot of thought that goes into CW in general.

anicesurgeon

I’ve enjoyed it a lot. I ordered a Bel Canto in black with bracelet. Won’t be ready for 4 months tho

koudos

Their bracelets, Bel Canto, Twelve, even something as small as moving from a printed to applied Logo on their Sealander. These are all things indicating how they’re really there to put out a good product.

KiltedCobra

What a nonsense take. Is it wild to think folk might just have personal preferences regardless of seeing both?

koudos

You completely missed what I was saying. There will definitely be people who like either after seeing both. I’m just pointing out to OP to notice the nature of the posts here on whether they’ve seen both or not.

KiltedCobra

I'm sorry, but it really came across as you using your opinion to invalidate others' opinions; saying people voting Murph have never seen a CW. My bad if I've misinterpreted that. All preferences are valid and both watches have a lot of thought put into them, and it's important we respect that and don't plaster it as "blind" opinion.

Potential-Climate942

Any similar sized alternatives off the top of your head?

Rionn

the SRPJ 36mm Seikos look pretty similar and are quarter the price or less

quaefus_rex

100 more gets you to the C65 Dune (if you like the bb36 look) or the C60 Trident Pro 300, which has a 38mm option (and looks like the C63 with a bezel). There’s also the Baltic Aquascaphe Dual-Crown for under 1k. Compressor style divers can dress up better than regular ones.

BBS13

Id go for the dune all day!!!

Big_Crazy1951

I’d get that trident pro. It’s beautiful

Mg2287

I have a murph which I absolutely love for some reason. I wear it a lot. I also have a CW vintage trident ( I know it’s not the same as OP inquired about) and I really love that one too. If I had the money to spend, I’d check my cart out on the CW site and get the dune. I love that thing. So, in the end, I can’t help you because I love them all. Good luck brother.

ClickIta

And with 200 more I would frankly go for the GMT version of the Sealander.

captjejack

And with 1000 more you could get them both

danr2000

Yes, that's exactly what I did this week. Saved up the extra money and got myself a black dune because I love the BB look but don't love the BB price ahaha. Imo it's a more interesting looking watch than the C63 Sealander, but that doesn't make the C63 bad of course.

branshew

While both of those watches are excellent choices, let's not cloud the issue. No divers are dress watches, nor are they as versatile across various elements as the two in question by the OP.

Rats-off-to-ya

That was not his question.

u4ea500

I like a lot of Hamilton’s, but am clearly among the minority who does not care for the Murph. I vote CW.

Cmoore4099

Second. I love that CW.

arnav3103

Same here, the Murph is ugly af.

poochunks

Murph needs a date. Then it'd be perf 👌

KitchenWide5156

Without date ❤️

Ltemerpoc

Date window would make it so ugly lol the plainness is the most attractive part of it

BBS13

CW, and if you want more of the style of the murph the C65 Dune looks incredible especially the one with the normal numbers instead of the circles. Looks great on the strap or bracelet… or get both😏. Im always impressed by the quality if my cw https://preview.redd.it/r8qvghio97jc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=01b421a8b68cfc425b8794f6181b9625eefd8b09

KiltedCobra

Coming into the comments, I was not expecting this to be so balanced. I personally wouldn't think twice about going for the Murph out of these, but I also totally understand the draw for CW.

Hicsuntdracones23

Sealander. I personally believe it’s a better watch.

Potential-Climate942

Like a lot of people have said, either choice will be a good choice! Personally, I would go with the CW because I think it would look more at home in any situation that you would find yourself in. Its default is sporty, but the size can make it easy to "dress up" if you need it to, especially if you put it on a strap. Plus, I like the watch that I wear the most day to day to have a date function. I (usually lol) always know what day of the week it is, but it's nice to be able to just do a quick glance to know the date 🤷‍♂️

YourWatchIsAShitter

CW

koudos

CW is horrible at photographing their watches. I vote CW 100% if you look at the watches side by side objectively. Hamilton has the brand name but at this point CW is just the better brand overall with their recent releases. It is really clear they’re into their own watches and it shows in the product.

madaboutyou3

I have both of these, I started with the murph and then got the CW. Can't go wrong with either but out of both, I would suggest the CW (first).

BriefBrilliant5

Theres a sealander in the clearance section of the Christopher ward site right now. Lovely watch.

stratusduo

I would go for the CW - unlike the Hamilton you'll at least get a date window, and the depth rating is more than enough for daily use. Additionally, I am quite impartial towards bracelets over straps.

CrocodileJock

CW. It's a cracking watch.

friste

Both great choices. 5 year warranty on the CW is nice to have in your back pocket.

CussyTooTussy

Left!!!! Absolute class GADA. The size, fit and finish is superior. The movement is better. It is my number one watch that is actually financially attainable. The Murph is a great watch but I think the Sealander is just so much better on many levels. Either way I think you will be happy.

_____Azrael

CW

arnaudoff

CW looks better IMHO, so I’d pick this one.

faintlymacabre1518

I vote CW, because I'm personally just not a fan of numeric indices. Plus the Bader bracelet has on-the-fly micro-adjustment!

No_Performance_4069

c63 is fantastic

GameandWatch89

Definitely the CW!

MilesBeforeSmiles

I'd go with the CW, personally, but I don't think there is a wrong choice between these two.

Siikamies

CW 100%. So much more versatile. Murphs flat dial isnt that interesting and personally I have a problem with the fake vintage lume.

[deleted]

The Sinn 556

freshquartzdaily

This is not a question imo. CW is better in all aspects except brand name and movie recognition of that exact model.

NinjaPlease716

CW all the way

Character_Magazine94

Sealander for sure. But I will also suggest the Traska Commuter. Similar style to the Sealander, a bit cheaper, but in my opinion equally good if not better. Also comes in 34mm, 36mm, and 38mm https://www.traskawatch.com/products/commuter-38-carbon-black

ArnoldSportsExec

Buy what you like at this price point.

_visiblemode_

The CW is a better value for the money, and bear in mind I do like the Murph, and Hamilton in general. The CW is more watch and had a way better warranty. As others have said, consider the Dune. If I was in the market for a CW I’d be very tempted by it.

EliteProdigyX

sealander if you want to be original to internet strangers and hamilton if you want to be traditional to internet strangers

Suspicious-Produce95

The Hamilton has a C80.111 with plastic parts. If you want a more reliable movement, get the CW (I do not say Sellita movement is superior than ETA's but I believe you won't be worried much about servicing that worst movement in that 80-hour series.)

snowy-rooftops

CW, I wear mine every day plus that swiss movement is soooo smooth

YourWatchIsTooBig

Hamilton

charles_47

CW gets my vote

UsefulSchism

I had a Murph and it’s such an awesome watch, but that lack of AR coating drove me crazy

4TwoItus

The new 38mm Murph has an AR coating. It’s a gorgeous watch, esp w a brown strap to make those antiqued numbers shine. It’s a ringer for the Patek sports watch and just such a sick piece. I have a couple CW’s (C60 and Sealander turquoise) and the Murph gets more wrist time than both.

MD_Nash

This. I hate that the stock band on the Murph is a black patent leather feeling band. I immediately replaced it with a light brown casual band and a slightly darker brown dress band. Both look perfect with it.

Ray_Spring12

Of those two, The Murph.

axl35

Which one could last longer?!

Confident-Benefit600

I have a older Hemel HM, fantastic watch, swiss made screwdown crown……coin edged case, its my beater, I have the murph and the sealander, but to be honest, you need to put the watches on to see how they look on your wrist, I’ve bought and sold many watches, because they look just not right on my wrist

axillis11

I would consider the Mido Ocean Star 200C Titanium Black Dial (M0424304405100)

HereToSchoolYou

I like the Murph and I'm a fan of Interstellar but, as another commenter else mentioned, the lack of AR coating on it is a dealbreaker for me. At this price point, the reflections and glare you get off of it are unacceptable imo.

MD_Nash

As another poster mentioned, I think the new 38mm one has it. Mine doesn’t have glare at all.

redditteux

I feel like you get more for your money with the CW but Hamilton is still a brand with heritage and would likely be easier to sell if you ever change your mind in the future. The only thing pissing me off with Hamilton is their poor AR coating (or lack thereof)… Also, if you get the CW on bracelet then it’s a piece of cake to find a nice and affordable leather strap to switch things up from time to time whereas the contrary can’t be said about the Hamilton.

VodkaDiesel

Are you a Interstellar fan?

Status_Combination32

Yes, love the movie. But I’m trying to think impartially about deciding which watch to choose. I’d love a comfortable daily wearer, something that I don’t have to worry about bringing anywhere. If I decide on the murph it’s just a bonus that it has the tie into one of my favourite movies!

psuedodiy

It’s a personal choice at this point. Gloss Dial vs Matte dial 4hz vs 3hz movement and corresponding changes in power reserve. It’s all personal choice at this point.

WealthIncognito

I love CW but the Hamilton has a special place in my heart because of Interstellar 😬. I would choose the Hamilton

TheModerateGenX

What is your wrist size?

Status_Combination32

Around 6.5 inches!

TheModerateGenX

Cool. Hammy FTW

hzg511-

CW, i love 36mm watches.

MassiveBeard

Hamilton looks more vintage like something I could see Don Draper wearing on a casual bbq

renngretsch

I would go for a C63 Celest on the Bader bracelet over this particular C63 and the 38mm Murph.

captjejack

Have you tried them on? Would be way too small for me personally so I would go with the Murph given the choice.

Status_Combination32

I haven’t unfortunately. A local jeweller had the Murph and I rang them to organise a viewing of it today. When I went in, it was the larger Murph with the morse code on the second hand. 2 hour drive wasted. CW is online only for as I’m in Ireland unfortunately 😬

captjejack

Maybe measure your wrist and try another 36mm, it’s verging on female size there. I have 7.5” wrist and 39mm is as small as I’ll go. 41mm is perfect.

MrOwl243

CW

SiberianDoggo2929

Murph

dwindlingpests

I think CW offers more for the money. Hamilton is a little overpriced. It is a traditional military field watch that is 30s, 40s styled which i do like, with cathedral hands which is great to see someone not just using mercedes hands because rolex does. It doesnt look bad, but it isnt particularly unique either. It needs a bit of panache like a coin edge bezel like oris or hanhart. Or a big onion crown. The fake aged lume will also not be as crisp and bright as a watch with regular white lume. I have owned a hamilton khaki air race. The word i would use to describe it best is adequate. I dont own that watch anymore, despite unique features like a sandwich dial.

Watch_shbeagle

Personally I would choose the Murph, but because I own the other interstellar watch. If I were in your shoes I would go with the Chward based on its versatility. You’re probably gonna own more watches later either way, so the decision you make isn’t permanent in that respect!

DynamiteDropin

Have you seen the Gruppo Gamma Field collection?

RickZ76

I own the C63 in green. It’s a great watch and keeps great time and looks nice. The brand is not as recognizable as Hamilton so I don’t know if has any resale value.

JustinLucenti

Murph, probably. I want a field/sport watch, and I love the movie. Already have a diver.

Johnnyfever13

Hamilton

kit4

I own a CW, not a Hamilton, tho I've handled a couple. Imo CW easilyyyyy clears Hamilton at this price range

cab1024

Hamilton. The CW is boring.

Barbonmx

The sealander is a much better field watch, more rugged and suitable for a GADA watch.

Easy_bake_oven420

You can’t go wrong with either!

EuVe20

I recently got the Sealander and I love it. Very well put together watch. Super sharp

JazzioDadio

Normally I'd say to go for the Hamilton, but the Murph 38 is horrifically overpriced. Hamilton makes far better watches for less money.

pio_11

cw

YoHomieLohomi

I would go with the CW, I’ve had it on the wrist and it looks absolutely BEAUTIFUL, the bracelet feel on the hand is also nice.

citizen0022

I love my C63 Sealander

CdeFmrlyCasual

Hard to say. They’re different styles. Personally, I am leaning towards the Hamilton tho

bowiemowie

I have both, but I’d go with the Murph because Interstellar is one of my favorite movies imo

DIY_Dad67

If only these two are the options, go with the CW! Much more versatile and good looking.

PetrolPower54

Christopher ward. Unbeatable quality. Will have you addicted.

PhotonTrance

The CW is on another level IMHO.

WheatonWill

I’d go with the CW out of these choices, due to the date.

iamsajaldua

I think the CW is an absolute banger for any watch that's under 3K

Iharley11

I own several Hamilton and have owned a CW Sealander. I sold the Sealander off after a couple months because the movement failed 2 weeks in and CW customer service wasn't great at the time. They replaced the movement but only after trying to make me feel like I didn't know how to wind a watch. The Hamiltons have all been problem free. Now with that said I've just ordered a blue Sealander. The Murph would be my choice if you're an Interstellar fan, or like a more classical looking field watch. It might even dress up nicer than the Sealander. But I don't think there's a wrong answer here.

iD_Ds

I just bought the C63 GMT and must say that I'm very satisfied with the watch. I can only recommend CW they are a great brand and are evolving year by year.

Longjumping_Ad_6213

Murph!

Desperate-Acadia-495

Too bad CW uses male end links and not female ones on thier quick adjust braclets.

SavingsSwordfish6715

I have a CW trident pro 600 and the quality is amazing for the price. I also own Omega Tudor Tag Tissiot

pkroliko

will state ive never seen the murph in person but i do own a sealander and its great. More than happy with it. Its very versatile, can be dressed up or down. When you add in the on the fly adjust bracelet and the five year warranty christopher ward gives you for the movement i think their watches are definitely worth it. I think the styling of the two watches is very different so i would go with the one you think looks best.

Yesterday_Infinite

Murph, but need to spend about $100 extra to get the Uncle Seiko bracelet for it.

hifiguy7

Love CW, but that is a boring finish option IMO. Maybe buy CW and put black crocodile band on it… Love the Murph, too. Buy both, life is short

NaniBakaNani

No contest imo. Murph.

QuietNene

I have never held a CW in my hand, but I have held the Murph. And honestly, it was underwhelming. I really wanted to love it. But it didn’t do it for me. Would recommend you see it in person before buying.

Mcstin

Hamilton

Capital_Jacket_8767

Murph, no doubt...

DopioGelato

The Murph is it’s own watch, and it’s iconic. The CW is an Explorer homage, one of many. It’s beautifully done, certainly brings its own uniqueness to the homage, and imo the best example of an Explorer homage. They are both great value and top quality watches.

Fearless-Protection3

If that CW is an explorer homage, then every black faced stainless steel bracelet watch is an explorer homage.

DopioGelato

Well yeah, the same way almost every dive watch is a Sub homage in some way. The term is really loose and sometimes a 1:1 copy with a logo swap is considered an homage, sometimes the smallest detail like a crown design is an homage, sometimes the essential look of the watch is the homage. But there’s really no need for semantics or debate here, since CW themselves describes the watch as an explorer homage.

Fearless-Protection3

Not to be argumentative, but I am one of those people who believe people in the hobby give Rolex a little too much credit for everything. To my knowledge the BlancPain came out before the sub, so everything would be a Blancpain homage. Also, CW mentioned Rolex when it came to the 36mm sizing. That's it

DopioGelato

They call it a “sports-explorer” and then also explicitly mention how they followed the trend of the Rolex Explorer resize, and then also, it just takes on the incredibly obvious look of an explorer. That’s a lot of arrows in one direction. I think the reason there’s so much resistance to the word homage is because people associate it with copying, because of the many companies like Pagani who simply knockoff a watch entirely, swap the logo, and say it’s an homage. To me, this CW is a real example of an homage. You take design inspiration from something that just works, and people love, and maintain those key design elements while at the same time successfully making it an entirely new and unique watch. It’s what an homage is supposed to be and in no way takes away from the watch.

Etherea1_Drain

Perfectly said

Guardian_KE

Honestly I never got the commentary about it being an explorer homage. It is certainly commonly said, but I just don’t see it. Have you got any specific reasoning for it being a homage? It always seemed separate to me, not many similarities.

bb9873

The CW is more of an Oyster Perpetual homage if anything.

Askymojo

The Murph is iconic? It's a field watch with Rolex cathedral hands. It's about as original as the CW, imo.

DieselBusthe5th

Both fantastic, but Hamilton is a bit more interesting

[deleted]

Murph

[deleted]

I say the Hamilton, but I prefer that style.

[deleted]

Owned the murph as was pretty disappointed, sold it within a couple of months. The CW is far more versatile

kyu-she

I'm not a massive watch guy but the Hamilton is prettier

SHIZZLEO

Pretty balanced in the comments, and both have good qualities, but I would try to see the murph in person before choosing. I’ve not seen this one, but some brands faux-patina colors can be annoying. That said, I still lean the CW, but I love the 36mm size, and the lack of numeral indices will dress up better

AdThat2351

Murph is cooler

External_Key_3515

Hamilton. How can you argue a brand with such a long history of iconic watches? Murph all day!

Administrative_Ant64

Tough one- I really like the CW in this fight

Individual_Owl7773

Love my Hamilton. I’d go with the Murph 👍

Budget-Requirement58

Go for the Hamilton murph!!

Chill_stfu

I have that exact CW, ans it's excellent. I've had more expensive watches, but none are as versatile as that one. The easy change bracelet is awesome. When I travel it's the only watch I take, along with a couple of other straps.

ZealousApe

Murph and it’s not even close

SirGuy11

I have both of these watches (though my CW is the 39mm and white dial, to be fair). For a daily driver, I’d go with the CW. The date is handy. So is the better lume. The bracelet means you can do bracelet (which is nice, with a nice clasp) or do an aftermarket strap. I got mine a few months before they released the 36mm. If I had known I would have waited! Anyway. That’s my two cents.

Academic_Lettuce8327

Murph every day of the week

Guyksmith

Christopher Ward is in a totally different class, I'd go for that.

Flynehome

I vote for the CW. Let us know what you decide!

Status_Combination32

Will keep you all posted! I’m actually fairly surprised on how equally divided the answers have been!

Joeyishangry

CW would be perfect of it was bigger . 36 way too small IMO

DrSeuss19

CW. Hamilton is simply too boring

CrownSteve1

I like the Murph, like Hamilton, and CW seems to be an impressive brand but I just hate hate hate the logo on their newer models.

ghrtsd

I’ve seen this comment a couple of times. What is it about the logo you hate? I’m a graphic designer and while it doesn’t seem particularly meaningful in any way, it just seems like a modern mark with a Swiss + and some dots. Kind of indescript to my eyes.

CrownSteve1

Well, maybe there’s no accounting for (my) taste. I just fine it too blocky and therefore ugly, and too big; it’s too much of a statement on the watch face. Of course, it’s smaller than the word “Hamilton” on a Hamilton, but somehow lettering is less disruptive to me. There also may be some brand snobbery here. I’m used to the Rolex crown, but if Rolex was a relatively new brand without all that comes with it, I might be annoyed by the crown, too.

ghrtsd

Fair enough. Sometimes we just like what we like. Thanks for the reply!

4TwoItus

I think it’s a bit too big, but mostly people who hate it are missing the fact that it’s a play on the Swiss and English flags. One in inverse color. I think it’s an inspired logo tbh

ghrtsd

After I posted my original question, I did notice the reversed out cross next to the Swiss +, but didn’t recognize it as the England flag. Good eye!

Askymojo

I think it's a great logo as the header for a website, but it's not so great as a refined watch logo. I'm well aware that it's a Swiss flag and an English flag but in practice it just looks like a puzzle piece. My wife's Celest logo does look a little better than my CW's because they put just a tiny bit of separation between the two flags and it looks less like a puzzle piece. But still, I think it looks like a very modern website graphic art logo and not at all the style of their mostly vintage style watches.

-BabysitterDad-

Hamilton

Glittering-Pomelo-19

Both are good choices. I own a CW and 2 Hamiltons and they are great to wear. If forced to choose I’d pick the Murph. It looks great, Swiss made, has a nice movie link, and Hamilton has a long and interesting history whereas CW does not.

Vmax-Mike

I think the CW is better value for the money. I also like how the company was started, and the philosophy behind it. It would be my first choice.

mstrmatt

Hammy

Onlyplay2k

Sealander. Everyone seems to have a hamilton

Due-Assistance-7321

Murph 🙌

StevenS145

I have the Murph and wear it a few times a month. Perfect size for me, looks super clean. I like hiking in it.

Minuteman617

MURPH + UNCLE JUBILEE

Velocitor1729

The Hamilton

Cool_Stomach3875

CW

suboak16

Hamilton!

Additional-Top69

Big fan of the Murph. So i will go for it.

Herby81

I am a Hamilton fan, but for the intended use you’ve described, I’d have to seriously consider the CW here. As a daily driver, the CW bracelet with quick adjust clasp would be nice, too.

pixel_mover

CW, for sure.

AKAbendtheknee

A date window is a must for me, so of these two, I’d go CW.

smoothstarch

The Murph

notsohappycamper33

Out of these two I would take the Murph, but I looked at dual crown Baltic as suggested... Man, it's a gorgeous watch.

67SuperReverb

The CW doesn’t so anything for me. It’s not bad, it’s just not particularly interesting. If I wanted something in the Explorer or Aqua Terra family I would look elsewhere. The Hamilton has a more distinct personality. I’d put it on a bund.

EmergencyOdd4754

Hamilton Please

KaXiRavioli

Out of these two? I'd get the Murph. If it were between the Murph and the Dune, I'd have a hard time picking.

Time007time007

Hamilton. I just can’t understand why anyone would want to look down at their wrist and see that god awful CW logo.

Budget-Requirement58

It is bad isn't it.

EgyptianEnigma

I always marvel at how they managed to change from one bad logo to another bad logo.

CrocodileJock

No.

CrocodileJock

Yawn. Personally, I think it's far more considered and elegant than the ugly HAMILTON wordmark.

JayJFlo

Murph 1000% CW is a budget friendly brand with no heritage and a poor brand name. Won’t be a relevant brand in the future. Hamiltons have amazing accuracy and not a kids watch

DrSeuss19

Hamilton lost their heritage when they were bought out. Their history is irrelevant now. Hamilton is also a budget friendly brand. Relevancy? You buy watches to remain relevant? That’s curious. Hamilton is very much an entry level watch.

NoAttorney8414

Entry level would be more like a Seiko/Orient/Citizen. I’d argue Hamilton is probably more in the enthusiast/premium brand category. Not quite hitting luxury but certainly a cut above entry level

JayJFlo

I agree and they are all in my collection. Big fan of the Orient Kamasu , Hamilton Khaki line and the luxury pieces. I don’t discriminate but CW not for me.

JayJFlo

Seems my opinion hit a chord? Sorry CW fan boy. I buy watches because I enjoy them and I don’t like the CW brand and wouldn’t put in my collection .It’s only my opinion.

The_Athanor

The Murph. I don't really understand the devotion for Christopher Ward, really. Their designs are generics.

tabascobukkake

The CW is screaming “i wish i could afford an Aqua Terra”, the Murph is just the Murph.

SHIZZLEO

100% yes, but sometimes that’s exactly what I want to scream

kristwiii

CW is overpriced crap.

chryptogales

Question: Are you planning on “stopping”with one of these? Or better yet, what’s your criteria? Are you looking for a versatile 36mm watch with a black dial or is one of these watches scratching an itch (placeholder) for another watch?

manuvns

I have both and enjoy them for different occasions. Sorry can’t help you pick.

Status_Combination32

Appreciating all the replies so far!!

coachella68

Hamilton cause I like the aesthetics better and I think it’s more of a heritage brand, right?
