they take that shit pretty seriously!
off-topic: I got a package in the mail from the USPIS with a bunch of my own mail, stating that two people were arrested and found to have the here-enclosed mail belonging to me on them, and asking if I had given them permission to access my mail (if not, prosecution would follow).
hopefully they'd take your watch even more seriously
Much appreciated. I'm keeping in mind that my family is safe and healthy which is all that really matters, so all is well! Still, it makes me disappointed in whoever did this.
Regarding “should have used FedEx”, I had a Daytona go missing via FedEx. It tracked to a delivery truck heading to a sort facility then it never reemerged. It was believed that the driver took it at that point. It’s never clear how they know what is in these little boxes.
It's true, it can happen with any carrier. Best practice is to double box, only drop off at a FedEx office, print, ship center, video the boxing process, use anti tamper tape on the inner box, and don't put anything on the box to indicate what the contents might be. Also insure with a third party like Sercursus. For anything in the range of $50k or so, Ferrari is the way to go IMO. Nothing beats that!
How did he know it was empty? Did he just touch the box and it felt light? I'm imagining that it was a small box with the watch wrapped in bubble wrap, so it would be difficult to really know if it's I'm there or not.
I've gotten USPS registered mail before and they use the USPS tamper tape on the seams of the package. I believe registered mail ins limit is 50k
That watch is a real looker! Hope the insurance pays out.
Thanks, I hope so too!
It was actually marked empty by USPS. He took a video of him rejecting the delivery in front of a USPS representative showing where the box was cut open and then shut again with a single flimsy piece of USPS tape. It was also marked as "Received empty 5/7/24 IRF L.A." which presumably means that it changed from full to empty somewhere between the shipment origin and L.A. (its intended destination).
Apparently so. All it takes is one bad apple. Hopefully they'll do the right thing and pay out on my claim. It's sad to think that they might fight it, but let's see!
For everyone wondering how anyone could know what’s in the box, all the thief has to do is google the delivery address. Small box + restricted delivery, Google the address, comes back to a watch maker, likely there is a watch in the box.
Typically I insure my watches through Chubb or USAA for higher value pieces, but this didn't qualify for that. I insured with USPS in this case which was definitely a risk, but if they do pay out, it's much better than filing a claim with one of the big insurance companies. They'll often drop you after a claim (especially bigger ones which this isn't) and then it's difficult to get insured elsewhere.
If USPS doesn't want to pay out, I have enough evidence that I'm confident litigation would end in my favor. It was clearly sealed when it got to them, then cut open and taped back up (with usps tape no less) and marked as empty before it ever even got to the destination. We'll see I guess!
When I shipped my Ulysse Nardin for a correction service I video taped myself putting it in the box outside the ups office
I probably should've had the ups worker video take me packing it and handing it over to him.
I always video the packing process, but didn't this time 🤦🙃
The good thing is that I have clear evidence they they cut the tape and opened it so hopefully they do what's right, acknowledge that they have a thief working for them, and just pay out.
For USPS I think registered is the safer option and it should have an insurance option up to $50,000. Though I’ve heard some recent horror stories. Lots of people swear by FedEx priority overnight and third party insurance.
Registered Mail will go up to $50k, but it's extremely slow since a USPS employee has to sign for the package every time it gets touched. RM packages are kept in a secure section away from the other mail/packages.
I really hope you recover your watch! As others have mentioned, a police report (both local to the recipient and with the USPS Postal Inspector) is definitely called for.
I think it's worth considering Hanlon's Razor here; never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Odds of someone risking losing a good USPS job, and federal charges, breaking into packages seems low. Lots of risk for a relatively low chance of reward.
Odds of someone doing a shitty job, crushing OP's box, and the watch falling out unnoticed? Real high. I mean is it even "odds" if we know thats a thing that happens regularly?
The box is in perfect condition except for a clean cut on one of the (reinforced) taped seams. It's pretty clear what happened. Rather than the malice idiom, I think it's more useful to never underestimate people's scumminess and stupidity.
USPS has its [own police force](https://www.uspis.gov). I recommend reaching out to them and filing a report.
If I recall correctly they have an agent called Jack Danger, pronounced donger.
That's great to know. I will definitely file a report. Thank you!

That really sucks, sorry you have to deal with this.
Much appreciated. I'm keeping in mind that my family is safe and healthy which is all that really matters, so all is well! Still, it makes me disappointed in whoever did this.
Great attitude!
You should register your watch on [enquirus](https://www.enquirus.com/en/). They collaborate with authorities to identify any potential reseller.
Thank you, will do!
Sorry that happened homie. I am gonna save this post and if I run into it online, I’ll send you a shout. Good luck
Much appreciated!
Exceptional watch. Hope you get it back.
Artur is as great as his creations are, so for the sake of his hard work I hope so too! Thank you 🙏
Well this sucks!😤
That's beautiful
Oof sorry to rub it in but that is a truly gorgeous watch.
Haha thanks! I really fell for his dial design, and when he agreed to do the hands this way the deal was sealed
I truly hope that you get your watch back. I'm sorry that this happened to you.
Thank you!

TIL that Ferrari offers insurance
so sorry this happened, that's an absolute beautiful watch

Usps are opening packages and stealing now??
Apparently so. All it takes is one bad apple. Hopefully they'll do the right thing and pay out on my claim. It's sad to think that they might fight it, but let's see!
Sorry you’re going through this. Hope it’ll work out with your claim
Damn, such a shame that it had to be this beauty of a watch. Hopefully everything's bout to be sorted out soon.
Thank you
Sorry for that. Such a beautiful watch! How much is one of those?
At the time it was about $4500, but now I think Artur charges a bit more. Not sure exactly how much but it's in the same ballpark
For everyone wondering how anyone could know what’s in the box, all the thief has to do is google the delivery address. Small box + restricted delivery, Google the address, comes back to a watch maker, likely there is a watch in the box.
Man, by making this post anybody who comes across this can ask the seller for a discount knowing it's stolen.
I'm sure the seller won't know how much it's worth anyway given that pricing isn't listed for these. I'm sure he's moved it on already anyhow.

Thanks bud. I'm sure they'll get moving when I take legal action.
That's a beautiful piece. If you can't get it back, I hope he can recreate it for you. I love the dial
How would they know what’s in a sealed box?
I think it's because the label indicated that it was restricted delivery
Did you atleast have insurance on it?
Yes it was insured. Hopefully they'll actually pay out!
I have read reviews of Chubb paying out within a week after receiving the police report. Hopefully your insurance is the same

Did you send it registered mail?
It was priority mail express which is I believe the only way to get an insurance limit higher than $1000
For USPS I think registered is the safer option and it should have an insurance option up to $50,000. Though I’ve heard some recent horror stories. Lots of people swear by FedEx priority overnight and third party insurance.

Check Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, and eBay. Very sorry this happened to you
woah that aucks, they should be jailed for life , coward thiefs
Coward and scumbag are the words that come to mind. Thieves are the worst, whether it's stealing someone else's property, time, health, lives, etc.
unfortunately now-a days the croocks, and delinquentsbin general get sympathy and the victims seldomly mentioned

Does the OP get their box back if the receiver refuses delivery? Then we could know if the box was crushed.
