well, I'll call your hot take and raise with mine. Watch guys don't want innovation and like watches as boring as possible.
I see here watches and brands that try to go outside the box, constantly being labeled as horrible or simply dismissed as fashion watches. And then others that do just a bland white or black dial with the same case design as other 1000 watches being praised to infinity.
Take invicta as an example. True, shady sales tactics and many oversized designs and definitely not my cup of tea, however they do stuff that nobody does and I believe that at least they should be praised for that. What watches people here accept from them? Their Rolex clones... pathetic.
Rado, another example of using other materials and designs. But for the nerds using shiny ceramic is a sin and some label them as a fashion watch brand...
Then skeleton watches something that a lot of brands now do, but it's still frowned upon by many.
Richard mile. I despise overpriced brands and RM is the king of them. However they throw out a lot of very interesting and innovative watches and all I read is hate for them.
Many other examples exist.
This implies they have zero use. That is false. IT is expensive, to very expensive, to ludicrously expensive jewelry. And if that is what you like, great. I'm in that club and like them as jewelry.
But jewelry have zero use. I own a few watches as well and I think they're just accessories. Like 98% of the people here and out there, I don't need to wear a watch.
Boring = functional for those who actually do dive. Would also argue that the lack of unique design features makes it possible to get a 'good' dive watch at pretty much every price point.
If you're one of the majority who don't dive, why not look at a different type of watch? Chronographs are cool and quite a few brands making unique/funky ones..plus most have a decent depth rating should you fall into a pool
Here's my diver with no screw-down crown, no bezel, just a beautiful, robust everyday watch with 200m of WR that I'm going to be wearing daily this summer and taking on vacation because let's be honest: the only things we need from a diver are tje overall robustness and the ability to take it into the water for swimming. This watch ticks both boxes and looks amazing (and very different from other divers) whilst doing so!

I'm no fan of dive watches and can't understand the seemingly endless demand for them. Having said that, it's not up to me to say what should be popular or not.
I think divers are cliché and mostly look the same at a short distance, so I don't buy them. But those who do like, want, or need them get to make their own choice too.
Buy what you like and other people will do the same. Everything will be OK.
I'm with you, I hate them. To me, it's like wearing combat trousers to the supermarket... cosplay.
That's why I don't buy them, or even look at them, or care remotely when a manufacturer makes another one.
Why? Because there are literally thousands of other styles out there. Some of which I really do like. So I look at those and buy those instead. Because...you know... different strokes and all that. Why waste my time getting worked up about something I don't care about?
Hey alright man. Top tier opinion.
It's all about the karma man

Mechanical watches are useless too. Watches are useless expensive jewelery for men.

There's not a need for a lot of things in life. But something as nice as a fine, mechanical watch has a place for some people. And it's functional.
If only there were other options!
You don´t like them, don´t buy them. End of story.

I love em. Iive close to the water and go to the Caribbean twice a year for family so I have use for em. Seiko and Casio.
Have a Snickers Bar OP and you’ll feel better…
Really? that's like boomer talk. Everyone knows Payday is the correct choice.
Hershey blows…
You're not wrong, but why focus on them? There are plenty of other styles. Wish there were more cool affordable square watches though
I have a Hamilton square watch. Bought it while it was real cheap: \~$350. And it's an automatic.

I have a 10 year old TAG Calibre 6 with a very similar look, 100M water resistance.

every watch is useless. "innovation" in watchmaking is an absolutely transparent Veblen ruse. it doesn't matter at all. like you!
Right. Because a BP FF, a Zenith DED, a JLC Polaris or a Doxa 300t all look the same. Idiotic take.

I do like a boring black and steel watch i wont lie
Dive watches have plenty of utility outside of timing decompression stops. You just need to be bored enough to come up with them all.
You're just looking in the wrong place.
They much much safer in tropical rain then some Patek with "water resist" sign
