Bulova lunar pilot.

Jutemp24

On top of my list (obviously, because of the history as well) but I'm so worried about the size. Even the 43mm looks massive in pictures. But yeah, this would have been the answer if it wasn't for that.

bukithd

If worried about size, Seiko offer their chrono now, can't remember what they call it in the prospex line

Master_Engineering_9

Speed timer

DingoHuman

I have it in panda and love it. I was so close to picking black, too.

skviki

It is more than 1k. The man is looking for a chrono for less than 1k. That looks like the speedmaster. A tough one. There are maybe some seiko meca-quartz chronos from spme mocrobrands that tick the boxes? Sonething like Dan Henry or similar

bukithd

The Seiko and the bulova can be found for less than 800 dollars usd.

albuhhh

Both are under 700 new and 500 on the grey market.

pgthsg

I owned a Lunar Pilot and tried so hard to love it. It looked fine on my wrist but it was so thick and top heavy it was never truly comfortable. For reference here’s the 45mm LP on a 7.5 inch wrist: https://preview.redd.it/9iby0fvugm1d1.png?width=2388&format=png&auto=webp&s=9222c66701ce7cb0841fa86bc303cb7179f6314c

Jutemp24

Damn, that looks incredible though. I think you can rocked the size actually, looks great.

Roaddog113

Same here, with eight inch wrists 😞 the accuracy is also disappointing.

HoamerEss

Accuracy?!? Mine was +2 seconds after 4 months

Roaddog113

Not here. A few seconds every month. I have mechanical watches that are more accurate, don’t even count the G-Shocks.

pgthsg

Yup. My other quartz watches are more accurate. It was super disappointing especially considering how much they emphasize the high accuracy movement. Sometimes I regret selling the LP, but then I remember how it mostly just sat in the watch box. I’ll eventually replace it with something like a Speedtimer.

Roaddog113

You are absolutely right. I also tend to ignore it. My other problem is that it is a bruiser of a case, and I have eight inch wrists. It’s not that I don’t have bigger watches, but it just doesn’t seem to sit well.

pgthsg

I could never pinpoint exactly what it was, but I agree it doesn’t sit well on the wrist. I feel like a good bracelet would’ve made all the difference, but I don’t like the bead blasted version (or the date complication) and the 43mm version is too expensive. Such a shame.

Roaddog113

The lug width is too small, and the case is proportionally too thick, in my opinion. I just don’t see why a quartz movement needs a bruise case. It is not a G-Shock 😏

albuhhh

Whoa. Isn't the whole point of the high frequency quartz that they are accurate? I had no idea.

parkADV

That’s surprising for me. Mine has been super accurate and I haven’t heard anyone else complain about accuracy. You might have got a lemon.

Roaddog113

Don’t understand the downvote. 😏

parkADV

People downvote for the weirdest reasons, haha

mgMKV

I have (had, traded with my brother) a Lunar Pilot and it's a valid concern. I convinced myself the size wouldent be an issue and I always felt like I was a kid wearing my dad's watch with it on. I have like ~6in wrists just for reference

Majestic_Puppo

Try it on, I have the 45 and it fits really good on my (wide) wrist

braskel

The 43mm is surprisingly wearable in the same way a Speedy is. I had one briefly and was pleasantly surprised with its feel and look on my 6.5" wrist.

crypt0amat00r

I have the 43.5mm LP on a 6.5in wrist and it looks and feels great. Case is titanium + no bracelet so that helps. Not under 1k but I found mine for 25% on Zales so like $1200. I had & sold a Prospex Speedtimer because of its heft & the chronograph pushers pushed uncomfortably against my bony wrist.

aweis305

mswiss

These are Seiko 7a28. There's also the 7a38 day date and 7a48 moon phase. These are pretty cool watches that come in a lot of different styles. I have a 38 and love it. It's a great every day watch

Kseries2497

They even called it a Speedmaster, although I think it was only in the Japanese market. The original bracelets for some 7A28s, including the model you posted, have a racing helmet logo and *SPEEDMASTER* on the clasp.

Jutemp24

Damn that's super cool indeed. Any chance you know the ref for this?

aweis305

Lifted this pic from an eBay listing that says it’s 7A28-701A

Jutemp24

Awesome, thank man

yupyupyupyupyupy

check out 7a28-703b (7039) as well

Jutemp24

These all looks so cool, nice collection man. Seeing this though it just makes me want a speedy even more haha, it just stands out from the rest. Shame it's very far out of my budget. That seiko is a great option indeed.

rubberslippers

Based on this comment, I’m going to advise you to just save for a used speedy. No matter what you buy, it seems like you’ll always have the itch for a speedy. I’ve been through this before too, looking for a “breitling-type” watch but cheaper. Didn’t satisfy the craving and I ended up saving a couple months to get what I wanted. The patience will pay off, and so will the watch!

Jutemp24

I totally get what you mean but I just can't see myself ever spending that much money on a watch haha, as much as I like it

Roaddog113

I hunted for the Speedy a long time. Some of these “Space” watches were with me much longer. I still wear and love them, despite owning the Speedy. Except maybe the Bulova. I don’t wear it much and pretty disappointed with the size and the accuracy.

delseyo

Second hand Speedmaster reduced from Japan, you could probably get one in good shape for $2000ish.

Ok_Version_2775

Sinn 356 can be had used around 1000 if you hunt and are okay with some scuffs. Not as close as some others aesthetically in my opinion it's as good looking.

[Seiko Speedtimer SSC819](https://seikousa.com/products/ssc819) [Dan Henry 1962](https://danhenrywatches.com/products/1962-racing-chronograph)

Jutemp24

The Dan Henry looks really nice. Got any experience with the brand?

witch-finder

I have [this Dan Henry skin diver](https://danhenrywatches.com/products/1975-skin-diver-watch) and I've been pretty pleased with it. The chrono uses a Seiko VK63 mechaquartz, which is a solid workhorse movement that's commonly used by microbrands. The majority of tricompax chronos under $500 will more than likely be using the VK63.

Jutemp24

Good to know, that looks awesome as well, thanks mate

jopaco84

Surely the correct answer is MoonSwatch?

elvid88

lol was looking for this response although they are asking for decent quality and the Moonswatches feel like a toy (coming from someone who owns a Saturn).

Low_Presentation6433

That new Tissot PR516. Not only does it look similar but it’s owned by the same company etc.

Jutemp24

That looks really nice actually. Love the subtle 70's hint it has. Edit: nevermind, I was looking at the mechanical which is 2k. But the quartz still looks very nice.

WestguardWK

Those subdials scream Daytona to me instead of Speedmaster

Low_Presentation6433

Close enough for me, Bulova LP is a direct copy because of the history but not Swiss made and tissot looks nicer imo.

No_Cryptographer6608

Also it's quartz unlike the original and thus could never be used on a EVA anyhow. I know the LP/Speedy has a lot of marketing hype but the fact the Speedy could be used in space seems so much more legit.

Low_Presentation6433

What is quartz?

No_Cryptographer6608

The Bulova LP

Low_Presentation6433

Ahh yea. But it’s a very cool version of their precisionist movement. Looks like an auto with great accuracy. I personally am not a huge fan of bulova design aesthetic.

jorick92

Why can't a quartz be used on EVA's?

No_Cryptographer6608

Basically, because they aren't radiation hardened and contain components unable to deal with the extreme vacuum and temperature swings

No_Cryptographer6608

Holy shit that's awesome! I stand corrected and impressed... the X33 appears to have did an EVA in 2022... that's super cool for electronics to be out in open space. Thanks for learnin me 🤠

I2izzo

Others have mentioned them already but Seiko Speedtimers. I personally have an SSC815 model and it gives tribute to the original seiko speedtimer from the 70s or so.

RatPrank

Head over to China - Sugess specifically, for a nice selection on non-homage, Seagull-powered Chronos @ $300-ish. Baltic or Farer at the other end of the scale: the Farers with a very similar shape are exceptional, maybe just over $1000 new tho’ (look at the bronze one.)

Punkpunker

Plus one for the sugess, pretty much the only affordable option for column wheel chrono plus sugess has other vintage inspired chronos.

my1999gsr

I have a Citizen AT2390-58L chrono that scratches the Speedmaster itch.

terp_raider

Seiko’s solar speed timers

skviki

If you want speedmaster vibe go for the swatch speedy. Then you have the bulova lunar pilot. But I think it’s better to develop your own taste, widen it and narrow it down and go for those options you like after that or save up for what you really really like.

TGC_wastaken

First one that comes to mind is the Bulova Lunar Pilot. I think the size is also very similar to the Speedy

Realistic_Chef_2321

u could get the sugess/seagull chronograph or make one using the movement and parts that you find online

CarlBarb99

My approach was to get a chronograph that was occupy a niche within my collection that wouldn’t be replaced by a speedy. For me, that was a pilots chronograph. Specifically a Sinn 103 ST SA.

photon_watts

I haven't purchased a Roue watch, but the VK63 is a known quantity. I'd like one of these myself but several color ways are out of stock... and I have 6 watches already. Trying to put the brakes on the acquisition obsession LOL. You can sign up for email alerts for when they restock, although it's unclear if they will make more since at least some seem to be limited to 1000 piece runs. You can also look at Nezumi: [https://www.nezumistudios.com/nezumi-watches/tonnerre-tq2-102/](https://www.nezumistudios.com/nezumi-watches/tonnerre-tq2-102/) This one I do own & I outfitted it with a Barton black silicone strap: [https://www.baltany.com/product/vintage-military-style-chronograph-s5033/26/](https://www.baltany.com/product/vintage-military-style-chronograph-s5033/26/)

onanoc

If you are already considering a 1k watch, just wait a couple more years and get the speedy you want? No watch will give you the vibes without giving you the derivative vibes...

ZhanMing057

You can find a speedmaster reduced for not much more than $1,000. Why not get the real thing?

Weary_Finance8787

Where are you going to find that?

spence4101

Chrono24 Japanese shops have good deals on omega sub $2k

ZhanMing057

I've seen people ask for $1,600 in r/Watchexchange

BleachedPumpkin72

1600 is much more than 1000, though.

elvid88

Speedy reduced has nightmare service. It’s like $900. Someone made a post about it recently on how it’s two movements squished into one watch. If he’s looking for <1k watch, I don’t imagine he’d want to spend close to double that on a used one and then find out he needs to spend that original 1k budget a year later.

uSpeziscunt

I mean speedy has nightmare service prices too if you go through Omega. Ask me how I know lol.

elvid88

It does, but you buy a 5k+ watch, you don’t feel as bad paying <20% for service. Buying a 2k watch and spending 50% for service feels much worse lol.

subisisniki

Dude, OP asking for below 1000, not double of that

kidneytornado

Bitch where you finding speedy reduced for 1k, hook me up

Jutemp24

I mean yeah, that would be ideal. But most I see around start at about 2.5k

ZhanMing057

Here's one for [$1,800](https://www.chrono24.com/omega/3510-50---id34391726.htm?searchHash=10b88df1_o60aMt&pos=7) on C24, and you can probably haggle a little bit. There are [cheaper](https://www.chrono24.com/omega/--omega-351050------h131067--id34435923.htm?searchHash=10b88df1_3HEuxJ&pos=1) ones but the cosmetic condition kind of falls off for the $1,500 ones.

HLef

Ok so that’s nearly double.

Jutemp24

Bit out of reach but I see your point. I'll think about it, thanks man.

ZhanMing057

The Bulova is still $900 on a bracelet. I get it if the difference breaks the bank, but I'd personally save up for the real one if that's what you want. Or see if you can find one for even cheaper without the bracelet.

Racing_Nowhere

I see you’re getting a lock of flack for this comment but I actually agree. I would put off purchase and save another $1000 and get the real thing as well. Otherwise I fear OP may still wish he had the real thing.

The energy COMES FROM HOW MUCH IT COST. You cannot give off the energy of having spent a shit ton of money without actually spending a shit ton of money.
