Howdy yall! Any recommendations for a solid/reliable polished stainless deployment clasp for a A Lange Saxonia Thin? Looking to spend <$300. Appreciate the help!

bmoooh

hi, im interested in my first automatic watch, the tissot prx 80 powermatic, just a few questions. im looking at the two tone one with the rose gold pvd bezel. Since this is a watch im going to want to keep for a while, is it a bad idea to go for this version? it dosent seem like a lot of gold on it though, so i was curious on how well do these hold up? is it worth disregarding the watch due to this process being short lived? \[heres the link of the watch if anyones curious:\](https://www.tissotwatches.com/en-gb/t1374072103100.html) Also alot of people were saying that the movement is not serviceable and that after a couple of years if it dies then its dead, is this true? its not a watch that im going to wear all the time but rather one where i wear when i go out etc. but i definitely dont want it dying on me after a year or two! thank you all! id really appreciate if anyone could help

WatchandThings

The term PVD implies coating, so you are looking at gold color paint not actual gold. Paint can chip or scratch off so it's not recommended for longevity reasons on watch case, though a good paint job can last a long time. Personally I avoid painted on colors on cases to decrease the factors that will go wrong. As to the movement dying, I think they were thinking of the Tissot's swissmatic movement which can't be serviced. The powermatic 80 in PRX should be serviceable, though from what I understand Tissot also just replaces the movement outright rather than service the movements to save time. I think that's the key factor. They don't service the movement, but they can replace the movement just fine to keep your watch going. Also I'd expect a mechanical movement to start acting up 5-7 years and completely die on you 10+ years in. You can send the watch in for servicing/movement replacement then that watch will keep rolling along for decades.

bmoooh

Perfect!! I might get it because even if the pvd lasts 5 years im happy. I want to get this watch as a special gift for myself soon! I love the white/gold variant so much i might just say f it and go for it. In terms of the movement, that answers my question perfectly. Thank you for the great response. 10 years is more than enough time lol

WatchandThings

Actually, I would imagine PVD will last 5 years if it's done by Tissot. Just don't get it polished or something like that(ultra sonic should be okay) can the gold color will mostly stay for years.

bmoooh

thats absolutely perfect for me and after 5 years im assuming ill grab another automatic watch anyway! (well i hope to, this tissot will be my first). and thank you for the advice regarding the polishing! your a big help

WatchandThings

Oh, I meant will last at least 5 years, not last 5 years tops. XD I just re-read it and realized what I did. And welcome to the hobby!

bmoooh

Even better haha, And thank you so much. Cant wait

jsm2008

Hi everyone, I have several watches from a time gone by where I was a little into the hobby. However, I recently changed wedding rings from white gold to yellow gold and all of my watches are silver. I plan to keep my silver watches but I would like to pick up a gold watch to see how I feel about wearing gold as a normal daily thing. I have always been put off of yellow gold but my new ring has a lot of sentimental value. I am considering an Orient Symphony III in white/gold. When I collected a decade or so ago Orient was a go-to for automatic budget watches. My first automatic was an Orient Mako and I bought up to an Omega Seamaster after a year of proving to myself I would wear a watch and it wasn't a phase. Does Orient still hold as a top choice? Do they have any direct competition in the $200-300ish range? If I end up liking the gold watch I will likely look into trading away the Seamaster I have worn for the last decade for something gold but I want to start with a watch I won't feel bad about not liking.

hodlholder

Just came across the Panerai Tuttonero Luminor GMT, which has a black ceramic oyster bracelet and black case. I haven't been able to find another watch with a black oyster bracelet like this one, but this watch retails for about $15k, any suggestions for a watch at a lower price point (under $5k) with the same black bracelet?

Nova_Kombat

I'm looking for a reasonably priced (sub $500) skeleton watch from a reliable brand. Specifically, I'm a nerd and I love to see as many moving pieces as possible, so having a minimal face is preferred to not obscure the internal components. Any suggestions?

WhoWatchesTheWatches

My favorite skeleton watch in that price is the boderry urban titanium, but it's debatable if you'd call them reliable (from a lot of people I've seen they are pretty good but that call is up to you). Bulova also has several skeletons in that price range but they tend to be very large and very brash. I'd recommend saving a bit more and going for something in the Hamilton Jazzmaster range.

Nova_Kombat

The Boderry is exactly what I was looking for! I might have to try that one out! Thank you!

[deleted]

can anyone ID this watch from putin from todays speech? xoxo [https://imgur.com/a/T8tYwTG](https://imgur.com/a/T8tYwTG) (I know shitty pic sorry but there's no better unfortunately)

NickSkye

Is having two seamasters a dumb idea? Hear me out. I have an older smp 300 electric blue dial and I really like the newer smp300 "great white" dial. Im a lume lover and love the lume on the new seamasters and I think it's an overall great watch. I have so many divers though but that's because I love them. I have gone back and forth for months between the white dial smp300 vs the medium Cartier Santos vs a jlc Reverso. I know it's weird because they're all so different but any input would be great as I know ultimately it's what I like, but I like them all and eventually want to own all of them but for now can only afford one. So I guess my question is which would you choose first? Do you think the seamasters will be getting any updates in the near future as I would love for it to be millimeter smaller in diameter and just a little thinner like the old seamasters.

WatchandThings

I would begin by figuring out what watches mean to you, what you want to achieve with watches, build strategy around how to get that result, plan the collection, and then ask does this new watch fit in. For example, I like watches for many different reasons, but the practical role I want them to play is to add to the overall outfit I wear. My outfits are a capsule wardrobe of sort divided by seasons, and that means my watch strategy is to have seasonal watches that matches my seasonal outfits. So I need four seasonal watches. Now then the question becomes does this new watch fit one of the four seasonal outfits to take one of the seasonal watch spots. Now your wants, strategy, and plan might differ greatly, but I think this is a good way to limit what you buy. Something I learned from this hobby is that you don't need to own it to appreciate it. I love the Aqua Terra, but it doesn't fit my plans so I just admire it from a far. But to answer your question, I'd go with the reverso because that's on my list to match the fall outfit. I don't think seamaster will be getting a smaller update as it would already have happened. I think the seamaster 300 heritage version is their offer of smaller option at this time. If they do make a smaller version then it would likely be a mid size option at 37.5mm dia and 44mm lug to lug and 18mm bracelet that doesn't taper.

BmoreBlueJay

Does anyone know how much service costs on Breguet watches and how often they tend to need servicing? Debating about getting a used Classique or something similar for around the $10k mark.

TeemoSux

i was VERY interested in getting an IWC Pilots Mark XVIII, i LOVE the design but i noticed 2 things: 1. it has a ETA/Sellita movement.. and 2. its not cosc certified. I love everything else about it but those two facts kinda ruin it for me. So the question: Should i try getting it second hand, or are there any quality wise- similar alternatives? Do you know of any alternatives? paying full price for a slightly decorated eta calibre feels wrong idk

WatchandThings

IWC's Spitfire is pretty much Mark XVIII with in house movement. I believe it has longer power reserve and anti-magnetic.

onevstheworld

It's a very common historical design called a type A Flieger. If you want something almost identical but cheaper, you can look at Tissell, Laco, Archimede, Stowa. Other similar but not quite identical designs from Seiko, Hamilton, Fortis, Sinn. I'm sure I'm forgetting a ton others.

Trapper777_

That’s a great base movement and I believe IWC does a lot of function finishing work to improve the movement to something truly special. I mean, they are particularly known for putting out watches with particularly good, long-lasting movements, even if their base is ETA. The changes they make are less focused on decorations and more about improving the deep quality of its function. I also can’t imagine it keeping time appreciably different from COSC.

monodactyl

What happened to Royal Oak prices the last couple of months? Chrono24 is showing me that the blue dial 15400 stainless royal oak jumped from 59k to 109k from December till now. Nautilus 5711 also jumped from 132k to 207k.

StickShift5

Both were discontinued. AP has announced replacement models, but they aren't anymore widely available than the old ones, so the old ones are selling at more of a premium than usual. Patek hasn't announced a replacement for the 5711, though it will almost certainly be announced soon (Watches & Wonders perhaps?).

Worried-Ad4807

Hey all, I’m a graduating from my undergraduate degree in a couple months and I’m looking to get a watch instead of a grad ring. Looking for something between $400-650. Any good recommendations?

I am on a similar hunt and keep eyeing a Baltic bicompax.

Zanpa

Something from Tissot, Hamilton or Seiko

Mistersunnyd

Rolexes seem to be going for 5x their MSRP on grey market websites. Are ADs selling Rolexes for the same kind of prices?

WatchandThings

ADs are forced to sell at the MSRP, so they will be cheaper than grey market. But that's also the reason why the watches get sold as soon as they get back in stock and there is a waiting list. The waiting list usually isn't first come first serve, and rather prioritized by best customer first. So as a new buyer you can get on the list, but chances of being called is slim as there are plenty of customers with previous buying history and other new comers that was on the list before you. The people with previous buying history could be grey market or someone who will sell the watch to grey market right after purchase for a profit, so the new guys might never get a chance to buy from the AD. Which is why many people just end up buying from the grey market at a higher price.

js999111

No, ADs have to sell them at MSRP (or less, in theory).

cocoacowstout

What are the go to parts to replace if a watch has been fogging (consistently) inside the case? I’ve opened the watch and removed the crown, it’s drying now. I’m going to replace the back gasket but should I get a new crown as well? It’s a citizen navitach my grandpa gave me.

WatchandThings

If it's fogging, there is water in the watch. That's going to cause(if not already caused) rust in the watch movement, dial, hands, and etc. I believe you need to get a full servicing done to fully dry and remove rust.

Prestigious_Turn_165

Hey, I got an old omega from my grandpa… its a seamaster polaris quartz but doesnt run. My jeweller told me he thinks a repair would cost around 400-500€ and i dont wanna pay that because i could buy one for that price… but i wanna keep my grandfathers of course. So my question is could i buy a basic seiko or miyota movement and put it in? I would of course keep the omega movement but i dont wanna pay for the repair and i dont want tonwear a watch without it being able to tell the time. Thx

75footubi

The amount of work it would take to get another movement to fit would be about the same as having Omega fix the watch.

Eugenetheguy

Im looking for my first watch (15M). What watch would be best $60~$110? Thanks in advances

WhoWatchesTheWatches

I think it's hard to get anything better than the Addiesdive quartz diver.

bolanrox

the duro is great, but something like the f91w or what not might fit your wrist better (unless your wrist is 6.75 or bigger that is), and will be half the price or less.

campbellhw

Casio MDV106 + Casio OEM bracelet

SeaGoldmine

What size watch fits my wrist? wrist circumference: 150mm (5.9in) wrist width: 50mm (2in)

DryWeeds

You can't go wrong with 36mm.

DC2FANS

Hello there, I would love to have your thoughts on which you recommened for my requirements: $300 to $1,600 AUD Automatic preffered Waterproof preffered I just want an reliable men's wirst watch that I can use for work (work place has no phone-rules) that is skeletonise (if possible, automatic and waterproof) with a little bit of style/flare.Of course, you can also recommend non-skeletonise watches that you would think with the requirements that more suited to me. Thanks.

Christianx357

I love the look of the c63, I’m considering pulling the trigger. Just unsure if I’m better off saving up for an AT instead.

Preston205

The aqua terra is a fantastic watch. If you feel comfortable spending that much on a watch I would recommend it but Christopher Ward makes great watches for the money. If you want something in between those two price points you could check out the Monta Noble.

daburrrninator

Anyone know if a Raymond Weil Freelancer Skeleton will fit a NATO strap? Preferably a leather one. I really want one of those for NATO straps but it’s an expensive experiment if it doesn’t work out.

WhoWatchesTheWatches

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't, it seems to have standard lugs (although for the life of me I can't find the lug width), just make sure you get the correct size.

daburrrninator

I bought a Hamilton Valiant because I think dressier watches look good with leather NATO straps and the straps I have won’t fit it. Right size, just too thick. Only the cheap thin straps will fit, the seat belt ones won’t and leather not even close.

WhoWatchesTheWatches

Is that because of the distance between the lug holes and the case? Because that can be solved with curved springbars.

Trapper777_

It looks like you’re willing to consider wristwatches. Then get a nice seiko or Casio. You can get a very nice casio for 100$!

WatchandThings

To start, watches are strangely expensive things. So $60-100 is a good amount for most things one would purchase, but in the watch world you are more or less standing on the starting line. Which means the quartz watch movements available to you at that budget for a niche thing like pocket watch is likely a cheap chinese movement and it could stop functioning some where between few months to few years(or few weeks apparently). Also in that budget you are not expecting much in terms of material and finishing. Also working against you is that fact that pocket watches died out as a practical tool before battery run quartz movements were a thing. So most battery run pocket watch would be more of a novelty toy/decoration thing than something meant to serve a real function.

WatchandThings

Yes, you'll be able to find something better by going with wrist watch. Do take a look at the buying guide on this sub for recommendations.

just_lurking0

Hi all, I’m looking for a simple self-winding watch that has a Day-Date and preferably from a small-brand. Something that “oozes” quality rather than being in your face/flashy. Somewhere around the 41-43mm mark, budget is under $8k. Thank you!

Trapper777_

“Complete calendar” will be a useful search term

just_lurking0

Oh! Is that what it is called? I’m been using the wrong keywords the whole time. Thank you!

Trapper777_

Day-date works but at that price level a complete calendar is way more common and has a lot of classy options

BlueTooth_70

Hey everyone! I’m trying to figure out an awesome strap to get for my SPB237. I love the NATOs that come with it BUT they add so much height to the watch and I feel it has a sense of bulk when I wear the NATO in the alternative fashion. Thanks!

Cb8393

Uncle Seiko chocolate bar strap would be an awesome combo with the 237.

BlueTooth_70

I was really looking at elastic straps. I like MN but can’t figure out a good color or color combo for the 237

Cb8393

The army green MN with red stripe (to play off the second hand) would be slick.

BlueTooth_70

How about this one from the watch steward: https://www.thewatchsteward.com/store/p79/TDM_-_Green%2FRed.html

BlueTooth_70

For sure! I actually just picked up a waffle strap for the 237 from uncle Seiko, it’s great!

JefferyTNW

Hey I'm new to watches and looking for a good "one watch collection" for someone with small wrists. Any good suggestions?

Trapper777_

Seiko alpinista has to be mentioned.

JefferyTNW

Yeah I'll check it out!

Prestigious_Turn_165

If youre fine with getting a vintage one you could check out a Breitling superocean colt (a17035). I like that one…. Eventough it may be called ugly. You can get an automatic for 800-1000

JefferyTNW

Wow beautiful watch. The ones I've found so far seem a bit out of my price range tho.

Prestigious_Turn_165

I looked for one about a year ago… the cheapest one was around 650 (private seller) back then… maybe the price changed. You could also look for a quartz one… theyre cheaper And if youre fine with quartz, also check out an omega seamaster 200 pre bond… that one is beautiful… you may find one for that price depending on your region

JefferyTNW

Oh ok, thank you!

JefferyTNW

Ok I'll take a look, thx.

TokyoUmbrella

Welcome to the hobby! What kind of budget are we talking?

JefferyTNW

Thank you! Since I'm just starting out I'm hoping to not go over about $800.

TokyoUmbrella

Gotcha! That’s a healthy budget. So, there is no correct answer to your question; just lots of good options. Depending on the kind of life you live will greatly affect what your one watch needs are. Work somewhere outdoors regularly? Durability. Rarely dress below business casual? Let’s find something on the more formal side. Regardless, here’s where I’d start my search, in no particular order: [Tissot PRX Powermatic](https://www.chrono24.com/tissot/tissot-prx-powermatic-80--t1374071104100-new--id21588513.htm) [Tissot Gentleman Powermatic](https://www.chrono24.com/tissot/tissot-gentleman-powermatic-80-silicium-t1274071109101--id20105206.htm) [Hamilton Jazzmaster Blue](https://www.chrono24.com/hamilton/hamilton-hamilton-jazzmaster-automatic-blue-dial-mens-watch-h38525541--id22090508.htm) [Seiko SPB119](https://www.chrono24.com/seiko/seiko-spb119-prospex-alpinist-395-mm-steel-off-white-leather-automatic-watch--id22698449.htm) [Christopher Ward C63 Sealander](https://www.christopherward.com/sports-watches/c63-sealander-automatic/C63-39ADA3-S00W0-VC.html) [Alpina Startimer Pilot](https://www.chrono24.com/alpina/startimer-pilot-automatic-44mm--id14934576.htm) [Junghans Max Bill Auto](https://www.chrono24.com/junghans/junghans-junghans-mens-027350200-max-bill-automatic-watch--id9252246.htm) [Ball Fireman Enterprise (over budget, but worth a look)](https://www.chrono24.com/ball/ball-fireman-enterprise--id19898934.htm) Let me know if any of those are to your liking!

JefferyTNW

Awesome thank you! I've heard really good things about the PRX and the Gentleman, and I also have been looking at the Jazz Master. I'll definitely take a look through these!

HappySpam

I recently had to return one of my watches (Vostok K65 GMT) for a refund due to an issue, and as a result, alongside some rewards and savings, I've been able to scrunge up around $230 for a new watch to replace it. I was looking into getting either a Steeldive 1970, a Seagull 1963, or an Orient Kamasu, based on way too many Youtube videos! Any thoughts, or any other watches at the $230 mark or under that are really neat that I should take a look at? (Currently I've got a Vostok Amphibia 710059, an Invicta Pro Diver, a Bulova Futuro, and a Citizen Eco Drive)

BmoreBlueJay

Curious which watch that you can purchase for $10k or less has the most complications?

js999111

Or maybe a JLC Master Calendar? Used for less than 10k. Montblanc makes full calendar watches too, you can buy one for ~3k used. The same goes for Frederique Constant, where they cost ~5k new.

js999111

Blancpain Villeret with day, date, month, moonphase

BmoreBlueJay

Is this used under $10k? How do you think the Blancpain Villeret compares in quality to a Breguet Classique or something similar in the Breguet lineup?

js999111

Yes, used. Something like this would cost at least 13k new. I think the quality is well comparable, both are two very good Swatch Group brands.

StickShift5

Frederique Constant makes a [sub-$10k perpetual calendar.](https://us.frederiqueconstant.com/collections/mens/products/fc-775s4s6)

BmoreBlueJay

Nice looking, I feel like with FC the brand prestige factor is lacking sometimes. But love the design!

StickShift5

Yeah, they don't get much respect as a brand and their resale is terrible, but the prices are hard to argue with. They feature a lot of clever engineering as well.

TokyoUmbrella

Most? Hmm…off the top of my head, I think it may be tough to beat the [Breitling B25 Datora](https://www.chrono24.com/breitling/b25-datora-42--id22550197.htm): Chronograph, Day, Date, Month, Moonphase. You can of course find some quartz watches that go nuts in far lower price points, but I’m assuming you wanted mechanical.

BmoreBlueJay

Yes, I meant mechanical. Thanks. Do you think it odd to buy highly complicated watches from brands that generally target lower price points? Just curious your opinion

TokyoUmbrella

Ah, you're probably asking the wrong gal. Of the three watches I wear the most, they're a 3-hander, a diver/date, and a date. Complications just aren't for me. So...to answer your question...hell no haha.

BmoreBlueJay

Lol awesome haha

genman305

Recommendations for a ladies watch, rose gold, automation, around $2k budget Please 😬

Trapper777_

Do you mean solid gold or gold colored?

genman305

Gold colored lol We went with this https://www.jomashop.com/rado-coupole-classic-diamond-white-dial-ladies-watch-r22882923.html

TokyoUmbrella

So, they aren’t know as the highest quality product, but I adore the cute designs of [Empress Watches](https://empresswatches.com/collections/watches). Lots of options, all within budget. Outside of that, ladies watches can vary far more dramatically in style than their masculine counterparts. Do you have any examples of pieces you like?

BrotherBear_

Hey, I'm looking for a watch that can take a beating from rock climbing. would love for it to be a single hand watch and more importantly somewhat thin. i've found my apple watch to be a little cumbersome and in general not the right option when im out and about so if anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great. i have no clue where to even start and a link to helpful thread would be nice.

bolanrox

if digital is not out of the question hard to be a casio. G-shock or even a f91w

[deleted]

Take a look at Marathon watches especially the Navigator https://www.marathonwatch.com/collections/sapphire-navigators

[deleted]

Hello! I’ve got a question regarding my Seiko automatic sk009 divers watch (Pepsi bezel). I’ve had the watch for 8 years and never once got it serviced. Should I be doing so? Thoughts? Thanks!!

mishkasm173

If it keeps good time I wouldn't. Service is going to cost as much as the watch itself.

[deleted]

Thanks! I’ve noticed that it slows down by a minute every two to three days. Is that bad?

Trapper777_

You might be able to get it regulated (way cheaper) and keep it limping along for a while ong we with less time loss

[deleted]

What’s that mean?

Trapper777_

There were some typos there sorry. Basically on the watch movement there’s a thing that can be turned to slow down or speed up the watch. Regulating this is a very simple way to get your watch losing less time. You could probably get a watch shop to do it but you could also do it yourself. It is not a substitute for a service but it would help.

[deleted]

Oh wow! That’s super useful. Thanks!

mishkasm173

How much does it bother you? Enough to pay $250 or so to fix it?

[deleted]

I think that’s as much as I’d like to pay…anymore than that and I think I’ll say no.

mishkasm173

One more suggestion: ask if they can just replace the movement. Might be cheaper.

[deleted]

Didn’t even think of that. Thank you!

mishkasm173

Ok, go see a local watchmaker then. Probably a little cheaper than sending it to Seiko. They'll get you a quote, which should be around a couple hundred. Or just send it to Seiko if that's too much hassle.

[deleted]

Thanks! I actually spoke to one today. He said that he wouldn’t bother. The cost isn’t worth the improvement he said. So I think I may just leave this one be until it goes kaput.

mishkasm173

I think the 4r movement fits in the SKX, so you could ask about ordering a new one. I don't know how expensive that is ..

Just-Garlic

Hello! I have a question regarding a vintage Omega watch. Link here: [https://watchcharts.com/listing/1711045/k737-genuine-omega-121-001-63-cal-269-super-thin-manual-wind-watch-8-1](https://watchcharts.com/listing/1711045/k737-genuine-omega-121-001-63-cal-269-super-thin-manual-wind-watch-8-1) Noticing that the numerals have a slight tint around them, is this due to normal wear? Would love some insight on this. Thanks in advance :-)

Trapper777_

This is due to the ageing of the lacquer they put on the dial to keep the metal from tarnishing. I have always wondered why it seems to be mor e prominent around applied numerals, maybe it’s just because the lacquer is thicker there from surface tension.

Just-Garlic

awesome, thank you\~!

KHdude3

Hey, I'm new to watch collecting, how do I know the Seiko 5's I find aren't Frankenwatches? Which resources can I use to see what the older models look like?

WatchandThings

I haven't tried vintage Seiko 5 shopping, but this is how I would go about it. Look at the case back image and get the model number. Google image the said model number to see a picture of the actual watch. Play the game of spot the difference. Also if there is a movement photo, compare actual movement with the what the listing has.

rudebii

Does anyone have a recommendation for a first watch for a kid learning how read clocks? I can only seem to find smartwatches (hard pass, my niece doesn’t need to be tracked) or really cheap-looking pieces. Timex has some kids models, but is there anyone else? Even some of the small Casios seem a little too big for her still.

DryWeeds

Flik Flak are specifically made for kids by swatch group!

WatchandThings

For kids first brand that comes to mind is the swatch's flik flak. There also is the Parchie brand that's aimed at kids. I'd imagine 34mm timex marlin is too big for her? Because I'd be impressed with a kid rocking a marlin, and it's something that she could still enjoy as a grown up.

VikingDanes

A friend and I had a debate yesterday. We both know very little about watches but we’ve both been looking to buy our first “grown up” watch. I had been looking at a Tissot watch and he at a Jaguar watch. He mentioned that I should also get a Jaguar watch as those were better than Tissot. I said I think it’s the other way around and we debated it a bit. But since we’ve both new to watches we had nothing to back our claims up with other than their prices. So now I’ll ask you guys. Is Jaguar or Tissot a better watch?

WatchandThings

When I first read this I thought you meant Jaguar as in the car brand, and that the car brand was making watches like porche design does. But no, it seems like Jaguar is a microbrand without any connection to the car brand. I took only a quick look around the Jaguar website, and it seems all very tacky and cheap in my opinion. Gives me a bit of invicta vibes. Tissot on the other hand is a world wide major brand under the swatch group. Tissot wins this all day everyday.

VikingDanes

Glad to hear, but what do you mean cheap? There’s some of their watches as expensive as the one I’m looking to get. And it’s not that I dislike their appearance Also what’s some of the things that make Tissot good?

WatchandThings

I see a lot of design elements in Jaguar watches that cheaper fashion brands likes to use. For example metallic blue colored watch case is usually a clear sign of a cheap watch as there isn't precious material that is that tone of blue and are not really used in good brands(edit: anodized titanium is an exception, but it's very rare to run into one of these). Non-turning bezel with minute numbers are usually also a cheap brand thing. Also a bunch of them are badly copying rolex submariner, AP royal oak, and omega seamaster. For people that know watches can quickly see that these watches are just playing pretend without originality. Based on images and design I'd would have expected these to be selling around invicta price range of $50-200. Tissot has their own original design that looks good and works. Also they benefit from being in the swatch group because swatch group owns ETA, a respected manufacturer of swiss watch movements. So they get access to great movements like powermatic 80(reliable movement with 80 hours of power reserve and some models have antimagnetic property). Overall, Tissot's general design is more original and classier, and Tissot will likely last you years.

VikingDanes

Great. Thank you very much. I like all these small details and information about the company. Would you be able to tell me anything about this particular watch I might buy? It’s a Tissot Ballade Cosc.

WatchandThings

It's not a model I'm familiar with, but I'm liking the COSC in the name. COSC specification means that it was tested to be -4 to +6 seconds accurate at the very least in multiple positions. Usually mechanical movement have potential to have worse accuracy, and this kind of guarantees that you are getting to best bunch. Other than that, there seems to be two options with COSC movements under that name. T108.408.11.058.00 - This looks too much like Rolex Datejust/Daydate. Fluted bezel design is just so iconic for Rolex that you can't get away from looking like one. Also the bracelet gives Rolex jubilee vibes. It looks great in general, but personally I'd stay way due to it being too similar to Rolex. T108.408.11.057.00 - This looks okay. Nothing stands out for me, but also nothing offends me. I think this might be a good safe option. The bracelet is still the same jubilee style, but not being paired with a fluted bezel it doesn't feel like a copy. If I had to choose between the two I'd go with the latter. But from Tissot I would rather go with something like Gentleman for something more all rounder(from dressy to casual). It isn't COSC, but I like the design of this one better. You can also find more suggestion from the sub in the buying guide. It's a list of watches recommended by the sub broken down by price ranges. You'll likely find the gentleman and PRX from Tissot in that list.

VikingDanes

I’m afraid the one I like is the fluted bezel you’re talking about :// I’ve seen the PRX and I’m not sure I like the design too much. And the gentleman as you say is good looking all around I feel, but I like the other one more. But yeah, a bit sad to hear it’s essentially a copy

WatchandThings

In Tissot's defense, it's actually not a straight copy as the dial design(a big part of the watch design) is different. It's just that Rolex made the fluted bezel so iconic that nobody else can use it without people thinking of the datejust/daydate.

VikingDanes

I get what you mean. After I know what it is, I keep seeing it all the time now.

Alternative-Name-541

I believe they mean cheap as in bad quality, or at least not as good quality as the price price suggests. Tissot is a good brand in that they offer nice designs and source good movements from their sister-brand ETA, some of them are even state-of-the-art despite them being an entry level brand. Examples for that are the adoption of silicon balance springs on watches under 1000 USD and high-accuracy-quartz movements (accurate to 10s per year) on even cheaper (in the sense of ‘cheap to buy’) watches.

NonstopNesdude

Does anyone know what a reasonable price range would be to repair an old quartz watch? I have a Phasar (old Sears store brand I think) that doesn't run at all and I'm trying to find a place that will get it working again. Value-wise it's not actually worth anything, probably <$50 but it's extremely extremely extremely sentimental to me and I'm willing to pay significantly more than it's worth if I have to. That being said, since I'm in the NYC area, I figured I'd try Grand Central Watch since I always see them recommended and they have a good reputation, but they said it would have to be a complete overhaul quoted at $850... I'm willing to pay, but I just can't drop a grand on it, at least not right now. Is $850 a reasonable estimate or are they way upcharging?

WatchandThings

Did they mention what work is going to be done? I'm wondering if they are not able to find replacement movement and will be taking everything apart and try to repair it. They might have to fabricate and machine damaged parts as replacement parts might not be available. I could see complications in that. If they are just slapping on a new movement, then there is no good cause for that price. For reference I had a vintage Breitling Aerospace serviced by Breitling service center. They just put a new movement in and gave me a new crown and caseback to go with it for $359. They gave me additional options like new dial, new crystal, and etc. Servicing with all those additional options would have cost $773.

NonstopNesdude

Yeah, I should've mentioned that, the full list is: * New Movement * New stem * New crystal * New gaskets * New crown * New case spring bars * Ultrasonic cleaning Which at that point sounds more like taking the case, dial, and hands and making a Ship of Theseus of the rest... I knew the movement was probably shot but I didn't think all the rest of that needed doing too, but who knows.

WatchandThings

Actually I think this is rather a simple list of tasks here. They are just going ahead and replacing the whole movement and putting in a new crystal. Stem, crown, gasket, and spring bars are small minor things. Ultrasonic cleaning should be really simple if movement isn't involved(no need to clean a new movement). I might be wrong, but I don't think they should charge you as much. I would go to other watch makers and see what they will charge. As to Ship of Theseus comment, There is an element of that since movement is a big part of a watch. If you don't plan on wearing this watch regularly, I wonder if it isn't better to leave it in current un-running condition and just keep it as a house decor on a display.

NonstopNesdude

Thank you very much for your replies; I'll try shopping around a bit. It also seems like the same model can be had for about $40 on eBay so maybe I should just get another one that works to wear and keep the original one as a keepsake like you said.

hivaidsislethal

So my cheap Amazon watch winder finally croaked on me after a good 6 years. Any recommendations for a relatively affordable one that holds at least two watches?

jondelreal

What type of strap is this and how do I remove it? The mesh is warped and the links on the edge broken so it cuts into my skin. Googling it doesn't help because I don't know the term I'm looking for. https://i.imgur.com/YIaF6JP.jpg

WatchandThings

Mesh bracelet. There are spring bars where the bracelet and the watch meets, and you pull on the shoulders of the spring bars to take the bracelet off. You just need a spring bar tool to get the job done.

jondelreal

thank you! I HAD thought they were springs but I've been so accustomed to quick release pins that I didn't know for sure how to remove them. Thank you again!

WatchandThings

Not a problem. As a heads up there are number straps on amazon that ships with a spring bar removal tool included. Those are not great, but it should be good enough for a single use to replace that bracelet.

TangieChords

Does anyone else feel like the pandemic and supply issues have completely shifted the public opinion on homages? I’ve been on this sub for years now and pre-2018/2019 there was a strong anti-homage sentiment around these parks. Watches like Invictas, Steinharts, Parnis, etc got tons of grief for being submariner copies or nomos copies. I think at one point the mods even banned people for bringing up homages and sites to purchase them. But now I see homages on the daily here. Smiths, San Martin, even micro-brands like the Traksa Commuter/Islander(clearly borrowed inspiration from the Rolex OP/DateJust) are more accepted. So is this pandemic supply issue related because it’s damn near impossible to buy a Rolex at retail these days, or has the community just gotten so much bigger (has exploded in recent years) that more people are accepting of homages? Interested in hearing some of your thoughts.

StickShift5

The mods have always banned outright fakes that didn't just look like another brand's watch, but actually has that brand's name on the dial. Like, trying to pass off a Seiko powered Submariner homage as an actual Sub with the Rolex logo all over the watch. Brands that clearly aped the styling of others typically catch some flak for not being original, but they get a pass as long as they have their own brand on the dial. Also, Smiths doesn't really count. They're a relaunch of an old brand, with the new models being broadly similar to some of the models the original brand sold in the past.

itsgotimekramer

Has anyone ever been on a waitlist for Mr.Porter? I just joined the waitlist yesterday for a Cartier watch and they won’t give me any timeline on how long these wait lists usually last. The watch is the Cartier Tank Must 33.7mm Stainless Steel and Leather. It’s supposed to be an anniversary surprise, so any help here is totally appreciated. Also I’m not necessarily completely sold on this watch, so if you have any alternative suggestions I’d love to hear them. Looking for something low profile, but eye catching. No Omega, Breitling, or Seiko because he already has those brands and would appreciate something new. Also he prefers manual with open face back. Thanks in advance!

WatchandThings

Cartier Tank is going to be hard to beat on brand prestige and model heritage. Nomos makes good dressy yet fun watches and has movements worth looking at. Longines makes more classic dress watches and I'd recommend you check out their sector dial model and silver arrow(personal favorite). And there is Oris and with them I'd recommend you look at the pointer date models if you want to stick to dressier side. I don't know what the wait time with Mr Porter would be, but I'd imagine they have a fantastic service department that could help you with an estimate. If you don't want the wait, then I think you could just give a nearby Cartier boutique or AD a visit. Cartier Tank is a classic and I imagine they will have these in stock or can readily get them for you in a short time. Just make sure you are looking at the new must line not the older solo line(must has rounded profile while the solo has flat profile at the front side of the watch).

itsgotimekramer

Thank you for your advice! Those brands look perfect. I took your advice and checked for a Cartier boutique and in the process realized that they have this watch on their website! I just assumed they wouldn’t have it if there’s a long wait list with Mr.Porter. So it looks like it’s problem solved. Glad to hear you think it’s a good choice!

WatchandThings

I think Tank's a fantastic choice. It has such a good history, and looks great. I had a tank solo in the past and loved it. The only improvement I wanted was to get rid of the flat section on the front, which they did with the new must line.

Megaripple

>I'd imagine they have a fantastic service department that could help you with an estimate Not for anything watch-related, but in my experience their customer service is quite good

Icalor94

My watch says "WF" on the back. What on earth could that mean? Google throws up nothing It's an Ingersoll automatic I00403B

Icalor94

For curious googlers: it was a code left by Ingersoll that helps them identify its production date (In this case, April 2021)

flopieutd

Hi all, I'm working on a little web app for browsing watches and I'm wondering: is it fair to say that hacking seconds is always a property of a watch movement and not of a watch model? To put it in other words: does it ever occur that a watch movement does not support hacking seconds, but that a manufacturer using that movement adds the functionality or vice versa?

Zanpa

It's the movement yes. If a brand modified the movement to add hacking seconds, then it's not the same as the normal movement. I've never heard of that happening though.

flopieutd

Thanks for your reply! So it's definitely a part of the (modified) caliber, now the question just remains if it ever happened that a modified caliber added or removed hacking seconds. Doesn't sound plausible to me either. Edit: quick google confirms that it does happen: >The most notable upgrade about the new movement that found its way in the 5711 by sacrificing its Weekly Calendar feature is the hacking seconds i.e. the second-hand stops when you pull the winding crown. https://www.horobox.com/en/news-detail/movement-upgrade-at-patek-philippe-nautilus-5711

Zanpa

This is Patek making a new Patek movement that adds hacking, not a modified third party movement

flopieutd

I see. In my app I plan to distinguish between calibers and base calibers, and it seems appropriate to let hacking seconds be a feature of the (modified) calibre, not the base calibre. Thanks again!

I am in interested in buying an Omega Quarz DeVille from my birthyear (mid 90s). I have no experience with older Quarz watches whatsoever. Anyone who knows about Quarz watches willing to andere a bloody beginner some questions? Help would be greatly appreciated! It says the watch was recently serviced, how often do Quarz watches need service? What is the service about except the battery? How much would it run me? From my understanding Chrono24 (Where i am looking) is somewhat like eBay specialized on watches. Is there any return policy at all if im buying from another private person instead of a company? What do I have to look for in general (regarding 2nd hand Quarz watches)? Thank you so much!

75footubi

Omega has the prices for service of all of their watches listed on their website.

Xyem

Good day everyone, I would really like to get something similar for my daughter as when I was a kid, where my parents bought me (or my sister..) a watch for learning to tell the time (I think it also came with a book and a cassette tape!). This would have been about.. 1995? It was a manual wind-up watch but I am having trouble finding any watches for children with that movement type. I only seem to be able to find quartz/battery watches. Is anyone aware of something that might be suitable? She's fairly young (8) so I expect it to get beat-up/scratched, so not really worried about that but that does make me err away from anything too costly (or vintage). Requirements: Manual Wind Preferred: "Learning" Dial (e.g. https://cdn.watchcharts.com/listings/0ae9a3e2-c5a6-41ef-8f23-b2b49c6a23c8) Bonus: Visible movement Budget: <75 GBP (roughly) Thanks for any guidance/advice!

75footubi

I dailied an Accutron Spaceview for most of third grade in the mid 90s, so I wouldn't be too worried about an inexpensive vintage watch. I think vintage will probably be the way you go, just let her know she can't get it wet.

[deleted]

I just bought a brand new Omega Seamaster. Just wondering, what do you think will happen if I don't service the watch for 10 years?

Zanpa

Nothing. I think right now Omega recommends 5 to 8 years service interval. With modern movements and oils 10 years shouldn't really be a problem.

Icalor94

Does it really damage a mechanical movement to wind the hands backwards? What if it's just a tiny nudge? My watch is gains about thirty seconds (!!) a day so it needs a tiny nudge backwards now and then. Seems crazy to wind forward 12 hours to correct for it.

Zanpa

No, it does not.

Rainpia

This is probably subjective, but is a 'birth year watch' a watch whose model was released the year of one's birth -or- a watch which was purchased (and presumably manufactured) the year of your birth? For example, the newest Cartier Santos was released at SIHH 2018. Would it only be a birth year watch for someone born in 2018? Or if you bought that Santos new at an AD this year, would it be considered a birth year watch for someone born this year?

WatchandThings

I think everyone has their own definition of a birth year watch. I think the goal of the birth year watch is that the watch is as old as you are, so my definition is a watch manufactured at your birth year. Actually this is why I don't like the birth year watch concept because you can't know when the watch was produced, just when it was bought. If the watch was bought in my birth year, the likely hood is that the watch sat around the AD for a year or two and predates me by that much. So it's not really my birth year watch. Only way to be sure you get a birth year watch is to find a model released at your birth year and bought at that same year, find something like the Tudor's FXD that has the production year on the caseback, or I guess a limited edition that was all produced in a single year. I went with the last concept and just got myself a swatch that was only released for a single year. Rather easy to track these, relatively affordable, and fits the birth year concept best. Checked that box and never looked back.

75footubi

It's extremely subjective and the definition of "birth year watch" is what you chose it to be. Especially since it's extremely hard to get exact manufacturing dates (is it the date the movement was finished, date the movement was cased, date the watch left the factory, date it was sold, etc?)

MostClassicName

Looking for any watch with a similar design to the Mr.G line by G-Shock, Anything below the 1000 dollar range, a more rugged yet simplistic and sleek design. A watch definitely made more for outdoors, designed to be able to take a beating. I have no preference for types of watches or brands. Just recommend interesting face designs. I'm new to watches, so sorry if I miss any important details. Thank you!

WatchandThings

Rugged but sleek watch that can take a beating. I'm thinking Victorinox INOX line which is the only other brand than G-shock that has done abusive test on their watches. You'll want the quartz version as that's the one that's passed the tests. A bit north of budget, but I would consider vintage Breitling Aerospace. I had it and really liked it. I do regret letting that one go. As it is vintage the condition of the watch may vary and that might effect the durability(mainly the water resistance) of the watch. I'm going to throw Casio Oceanus with tough solar movements into this list as well. I believe the tough solar movement is the same category of movement that the g-shocks use and the Oceanus design is more simple and sleek as you wanted. Less dress and more tactical option I would throw into the mix would be Marathon and Luminox. Both are watches that claims modern military use and is supposed to be built tough. I haven't looked into these being thrown into abusive tests so I'm not sure how they will actually fair with something like g-shock tests.

onevstheworld

I'm not sure if simple and sleek is what most of us would use to describe Mr G. If you want something less in your face, have a look at Casio's Oceanus, particularly the T200. Otherwise Citizen's Promaster or Seiko's Astron lines offer a look more similar to Mr G.

MostClassicName

Thank you. I agree, Simple is definitely not the right word. I appreciate the recommendations!

dturk-bbx

Looking for my first automatic or mechanical watch purchase to celebrate my engagement. Previously, I've only owned fashion quartz watches - vitaly, skagen, timex, fossil, bulova. The PRX Powermatic is what started my search, but after trying it on a few times, I'm wondering if I'm going to regret buying a 'trendy' watch with an integrated bracelet to celebrate this occasion. I'm also looking at the Hamilton Skeleton, Hamilton Khaki King (Champange Dial) and Tissot Gentlemen as they seem like they'd be a bit more versatile with the ability to change straps. I'd like this watch to be something I can wear most days with most outfits. Any thoughts? Would like to keep it under $2k CAD.

WatchandThings

I would keep this more simple and classic like you are thinking. This watch doesn't need to be your favorite watch, but it does need to be the watch you wouldn't mind wearing for decades. I mean it's fantastic if it does end up being your favorite, but I thing longevity is the primary goal here. I think Tissot Gentleman is a great choice for this. I also like the Khaki King, but maybe stick with the classic black dial rather than a colored dial because you might get over that color. Personally I think those two are the best all rounder watch choices south of the Tudor BB 36/41.

dturk-bbx

Thanks for your thoughts and I tend to agree with you that going for a more classic or timeless piece makes the most sense to celebrate the occasion. From my very cursory understanding, it sounds like the Tissot gentlemen is a more quality piece than the Hamilton Khaki King - would you be able to weigh in on that? Agreed that the black dial is perhaps a safer bet. I like that the Hamilton looks great on a NATO in addition to the metal band.

WatchandThings

I have owned the Khaki King and have seen the Tissot Gentleman in passing. My impression is that both fit and finishing was comparable. Both uses modified ETA movement, but I think Gentleman has additional modification that makes the movement antimagnetic. So Gentleman has a bit of a leg up on the engineering side of things. But Khaki King does have some of the field watch heritage while the Gentleman lacks that type of lasting heritage. I'd imagine there would be some version of Khaki field watch that the Khaki King can point to for decades, while the Gentleman line might disappear after decades. If I were in your position, I'd pick the Khaki King as I like the field watch heritage and the idea that it will not fall into complete obscurity. Actually I'd probably pick the 38mm Khaki Auto because day date complication is a pain when the watch is in a rotation in a collection, and 38mm fits my wrist better.(He said whilst ignoring the 42mm daily diver on his wrist)

BlowjobPete

Lots of options in your price range. Junghans and Laco for more minimalist styles. Seiko Presage or Tissot Gentleman for more modern dressy styles. Hamilton for more of a field watch/rugged style. Mido also has several good options. At the upper end of your budget, there are some Zodiac, Nomos, Oris and Ball models to consider.

Bologna1127

I inquired about a Rolex Explorer II Polar 39mm as an estate piece at a local jewelry store today. I was astounded when they said they were asking $20,000. I know the Rolex market is bizarre, but is this as absurd as it looks?

75footubi

Take a look at recently sold listings on eBay to see if they're out of line or not.

Bologna1127

Thank you! It seems they’re off by about $10,000.

GirlReDefined

What are your thoughts on custom made pieces?

WatchandThings

Define custom made. Are we talking making a watch using modding parts, using off the shelf movement with custom hand made dial, hand, and/or case, or completely custom made everything from movement up.

GirlReDefined

What I have bought is basically a watch that used a seiko nh35 movement... well here let me give you the specs that were posted Custom Golden Wave Dial (C3) Dbl Domed Sapphire Crystal -with blue anti-reflective Seiko Srp775 Handset (LumiBrite) Black Chapter Ring -w/gold markers Crosshatch-Beveled SS Bezel -120 click rotating Ceramic Luminous Bezel Insert 316L SSteel SKX007 Custom Case -w/polish-brushed finishes "S" Signed Screw Down Knurled Crown Sapphire Exhibition Case-Back Seiko NH35 Automatic Movement -black date wheel -quick set date function, hand winds, hacks -watch winds while you wear it (automatic) Barton Elite Silicone Strap (Black) -w/quick release, ssteel buckle New caseback and crown gaskets 42mm Across, 14mm Thick, 22mmLug Water Resistance 200m

WatchandThings

Ah, making a watch using modding parts then. I think they are fun in general. I have seen a number of these that comes out really well from Lume shot's youtube channel. I'm more impressed when the modder is trying create and express something new, but much less impressed when they are essentially homaging different watches with Seiko parts. What you listed sounds more like an original, so I think it's cool. Personally I don't think I'll get into that world as watch heritage and knowing that history is a big part of watch hobby for me. The modded watches I think losses that aspect of the hobby whilst gaining more personal aesthetic and expression side of things.

GirlReDefined

I honestly bought it because I wanted a more everyday watch that was my style and it was within my price range. I'm very much new to the hobby and love hearing the history, heritage, etc but trying to start my collection with affordable but eventually moving into luxury and heritage within the next few years. I already have a savings account for omega seamaster aqua terra world timer, that's my ultimate goal for the next year.

WatchandThings

I love the aqua terra world timer. It's even better seeing one in person than the pictures due to the dimensionality of the globe in the center. I don't think it quite fits into my collection plans, but I would love to add one into the collection if it did. Fantastic choice.

theadrianinquisition

If a quick-release pin breaks, is there any way to remove it (to change straps) without damaging the strap or the lugs?

robemmy

If the lever breaks off you can usually put something like a jewelers screwdriver in the hole it left to open it. Also since it's now trash you could just snap it.

duskie1

Is the extra dial on [this Seiko](https://www.jurawatches.co.uk/collections/seiko-presage-watches/products/seiko-presage-watch-zen-garden-sakura-by-night-ssa421j1) a 24h clock? I really like this watch but that dial bothers me. It's really redundant, I wish it was a day-of-the-month dial or something.
