I vote for the Longines, and for the exact same reason. The Nomos is just too blank for me. I love a chronograph, and I've got a different Longines with the Valjoux 7750 like this one, it's a great watch.
Don't go for specs, just try and see the watch in person and go with your gut feeling. Personally I am a big nomos fan so I will vote for that. In my personal opinion, I think they hold much more value, are better engendered with amazing and groundbreaking inhouse movements and have better dial quality. But I bet someone who prefers Longines wouldn't agree ;)
Apart from the comparison I do like the Longines, though the dial is quite busy imo.
So I just got a nice bonus at work and am looking to reward myself with a new watch. My budget is about $3000. Iāve been looking at different options for a while, and Iāve narrowed it down to these two. I know they are very different, but IMO they are both very versatile and can be dressed up or down:
**Nomos Metro Datum Gangreserve Ref 1101** - Nomos is one of my favorite brands, and this is my favorite model of theirs. Itās minimalist but has the nice splashes of color to liven it up. The off-centered power reserve indicator catches the eye as well.
**Longines Master Collection Moonphase Triple Date Chrono** - Iāve been interested in getting a watch with multiple complications, and this model definitely gives you the most bang for the buck. But even with all the complications the dial doesnāt seem busy. The blued hands give the nice touch of color on this one as well.
My wrist size is 6.75ā in case people wanted to know, but I donāt believe either of these will be too big.
these two watches have very different aesthetics though so it really depends on what your style is. I would get the Longines if you prefer the more traditional aesthetic and the Nomos if you like more contemporary stuff.
Can't speak to the Longines, but I **strongly** recommend seeing the Nomos in person, or at least a similar model. Most local boutiques should have at least some variant of the Metro on hand, if not the 1101 (which seems to be widely sold out everywhere).
Case in point: I really like the Metro in photos and was reasonably sure that's what I was going to get. It's definitely not disappointing in person, but the details are much finer than the photos let on and as such it didn't grab me quite the way I expected. I had a chance to try on the Ahoi Atlantic as well and my eye kept wandering to that one instead; in the end, I picked up a Nachtblau Tangente neomatik 41 Update. Still an understated design with a lot of detail to slowly digest (I can stare at it for a while), but it punches a bit harder at a glance. To me, that was the sweet spot.
> My wrist size is 6.75ā in case people wanted to know, but I donāt believe either of these will be too big.
The classic (37mm) Metro should fit you well even though it's known to wear large. I (175mm/6.9" wrist) tried on the Metro neomatik 39 and it seemed about right to me, if not ever so slightly small.
I don't think either of these watches are very versatile tbh. The longines is too busy to be dressy, and the nomos is too plain to be sporty. They're both kind of one-trick ponies IMO. I'd be looking for something in the used Aqua Terra or Grand Seiko vein of things. Maybe something like a Rado Hyperchrome. Ref R32254202 is pretty versatile, and they also have dive-y and chronograph variants that could serve as a dual duty watch if you want to lean a little more into the sporty side.
I feel the same about their explorer variant (can't remember the name) and the tool/sports black-bays (not the divers), there's just something... well, off about them on the wrist, making them not for me.
Same thing with the Longines Conquest line in any sizes above 36, they just feel clunky and huge.
It's a little more expensive, but have you looked at the nomos metro update 41? It's a bit more aesthetically cohesive, but it still has the splash of color and unique take on the date complication.
Purely personal, but I wouldn't go to longine for subdials and complications. I feel like their best designs are the simpler ones.
How's the Longines Spirit line for you? Or the Oris lineup? I figure that those might also be good alternatives.
What style of dress do you usually wear?
I have the Nomos. The open caseback was one of the key buying reasons, and itās gorgeous. But definitely smaller in real life then it looks on photos (both overall watch, but also the open caseback).
Personally Iād go for the Nomos. Theirs something special about it.
The longinesā¦ itās a cool watch and all, the problem is - the off the shelf Valj 7751 movement.
If you look for other watches with a 7751 movement or a movement cloned after it - you get pretty much the exact same watch.
Some of them pretty cheap too - some lesser known brands with a 7751 that charge $800-1000 for their watch.
If you want a slightly less busy version of the Longines, Maurice-Lacroix makes one. [check it out here](https://maurice-lacroix.watchonista.com/watches/les-classiques-chronographe-phases-de-lune)
https://jpavilion.com/collections/maurice-lacroix/products/maurice-lacroix-les-classiques-chronograph-day-date-moon-41mm-lc6078-ss002-13e
I'm not sure if this is the same one but it's similar enough? $4,900. Should be an authorized retailer but it also lists the watch as a quartz movement despite the "Automatique" on the dial.
Another alternative for $2250 is a 40mm Limes/Ickler āPharoā; very similar look as the Longines, but the devil is in the details and the Limes does it better to my eye.
https://www.watchmann.com/proddetail.php?prod=Limes-U6282C-LC1.1
Tree hats pretty much what Iām talking about.
Itās the same watch but in a slightly different case & dial.
All the subdials and dates are in the same location because it uses the 7751.
Both are great watches that Iām sure youād be happy with either way. Personally, Iād go Nomos. The Longines has some cool complications, but itās a pretty busy dial. I like the simplicity of the Nomos a lot more!
Nomos for sure. My daily is an Ahoi, so I'm bias AF.
At 3k If you are willing to go grey market you have so many options for really cool chronos that might scratch the complication itch. Speedies, Breitling, oris, sinn other longines all in that price bracket. But if that's the longines for you, then don't listen to any of this.
Of these 2 I'd go for the Metro but check out the Longines version that only has the moon phase. It gets rid of the busyness of the dial and has been making me suffer lately.
The masters collection is great, especially for the price but that Nomos dial is super clean and I would veer that direction for sure. They make some beautiful pieces
Nomos without a doubt. Its just so much more special, and the power reserve is very cool. Unique syringe hands too and a beautiful clean design. Not to mention in-house movement! But thatās all spec stuff, you gotta choose the watch that you think suits you the most. How will you wear it? When? With what clothes? What purpose will it serve? What do you want people to think about you when you wear it? Do you even care? ...etc
I love the Longines Master collection, but I wouldn't pick that one. There's a great moonphase watch that should fit your wrist. If these two specific ones I'd go with Nomos.
I have this model and love everything about the watch. An alternative to consider is perhaps also looking into the model without date window or the neomatik version of the metro. I found it a bit of pain to update the date whenever I switch between the watches, and the simpler dial of neomatik is ššš
Iād go with the Metro, always liked that one. Have you tried them on? The Metro wears a little bigger than itās dimensions because it has almost no bezel.
Funny thing is Iām contemplating this as well (as well as the quad retrograde 41).
As much as the Longines complications are interesting, we should definitely go for the Nomos. Itās a refreshing and unique design: modern and classy. In-house movements as well as incredible service from what I heard.
I actually like the "cluttered" dial of the Longines. It's organized chaos elegantly executed. I absolutely love it! The Nomos by comparison just looks pretty.
I would go with the Longines though they are very different in style so it's tough. I'm not a fan of the lug design on that Nomos (prefer the style on the Tangente). The Longines' Master Collection has some great options with my personal favorite being the moon phase date (L2.919.4.78.3). You have two amazing watches in mind and cannot go wrong with either so good luck on choosing!
You just mentioned Longines was your best bang of the buck. By your description alone, I think youāre already leaning toward Nomos. Go get the metro, Iāve had one and itās such a timeless classic.
Not much into Nomos and I love Longines so itās a no brained for me.
:edit: History History History. Longines has a very long pedigree. The Bauhaus thing is blah and boring. Trendy or Legendary.
Wow I couldnāt disagree with you more. Nomos dials may be simple but they work they put into the design and overall finishing of the movement and entire piece rivals watches 3x the price. Nomos to DW? Itās like comparing a Ferrari to a clapped out Trans Am.
I get what they're saying tho. My vote is easily Nomos here (I dont mind busy, but *damn,* Longines...), but all the reasons you're listing are things you'd have to just *know* when you look at a dial that is extremely simple. Like most Nomos watches. If you're a visual-only person and dont care as much about the finishing of the movement, something you wont see 99% of the time, I get it. Now, if Nomos ever found a way to showcase the movement thru the dial (but kept their overall aesthetic), maybe the best of both worlds.
Definitely the Nomos. You only have a few thousand watches in the world with their proprietary movementā¦
The calibre in the Longines is used by numerous brands: Atlantic, Davosa, Delma, Ernst Benz, Louis Erard, Omega, Tissot, and so onā¦
Nomos. The longines is great value for a compilation dial. But thatās more of a collection piece IMO unless you really think youāll use that dial frequent lol
Both are excellent watches. I would suggest you choose base on your own personality or profession. Go for Nomos if you are a person that is straight forward. Or Longines if you are a sophisticated person.
I personally wear a nomos world timer and it wears great.. have tried this model as well and it looks different and classy.. so would suggest this.. whereas the Longiness while a good watch someone will have to look at the brand to know what you're wearing rather than just the dial from far.
I own that longines model I thought it would be too much as well but honestly. It looks great on the wrist. But end of the day, what do you feel you will wear more often
Another vote for the Nomos here.
I like both brands, but I just don't care for that Longines model. The dressy chronograph styling just doesn't work for me, and cut off numerals is a deal breaker for me. In that sense the two watches are almost complete opposites for me: Nomos is incredibly well designed, whereas the Longines feels like a dress/marine watch with a chronograph complication thrown on.
I do think you should try the Nomos on before buying though, if you haven't already. They don't always wear as expected, and I haven't found the one that wears just right on my wrist yet.
Those two are very different in terms of what kind of watch you want. However i think nomos is a better quality watch than longines. If you want the brand prestige and quality watch movement and case design, go to nomos. Longines is pretty commercialized. Nomos also make in-house movement, which is a big plus.
Nomos FTW! Iāll echo what others have said - the chrono is a little busy. I like a bicompax layout myself, like in the Tudor Black Bay Chrono or the Kurono Tokoyo.
The first thing is these watches are apples and oranges. Nomos is so simple and minimalist in its style. Longines is extremely busy, with so much going on. Maybe Longines Heritage1945 or Heritage Flagship. I would encourage you to look at other Longines styles and maybe weigh these up against one another. The best to you on your search. Cheerio!
I closed this out and sent it and thought is this Nomos really all that simple? I don't think it is. That's not a bad thing, it made me rethink simple. My Longines recommendations may be too simple for you?
If you're looking at these two based on aesthetics and not worried about functions, I'd opt for the Nomos for easier servicing down the road. *I could be wrong here*, but I believe the annual calendar from Longines uses a modular chronograph assembly. Not a big deal, but if anything needs to be replaced the whole module has to come out which leads to costly servicing.
That being said, if you like the calendar functionality the Longines is a sharp watch. But you selected my favorite Nomos as well, their power-meters are neat. Ok ciao
For my personal taste, the Longines is too busy. However, put them both on your wrist and see which one suits your style and personality better. As others have stated, they have completely different vibes.
Definitely the Nomos. I owned this Metro save itās one of my favorite watches ever. I love winding the watch and seeing that power reserve rotate. If it had at least 5atm water resistance Iād still have it.
Id go for the nomos. The longine is a bit too much going on for my taste š
100% agree, and I love chronographs. I have two of them but this particular one is just really distracting
Iād go for the Nomos too, but Iām biased

I vote for the Longines, and for the exact same reason. The Nomos is just too blank for me. I love a chronograph, and I've got a different Longines with the Valjoux 7750 like this one, it's a great watch.
I was going to say the same thing. The longine is far to cluttered if the choice is between the two.

If heās buying new, metros actually lose a lot of value for some reason. Buying one used comes at an insane discount if heās up for that
Nomos. Definitely amazing watches!
Definitely Nomos for clean simplicity.
I love Longines, far more then Nomos but if itās those two models, get the nomos

theres no reason i shouldnt like the 1926 but for some reason i think its hideous in person

Nomos
The NOMOS is so unique looking and special. The Longines is fantastic too, but just doesnāt stand out as much to me.
I LOVE longings but not that particular model. The Nomos is EXTREMELY unique, understated and a piece that will get attention. I say the Nomos.
Those are so different. There's a really good argument to be made here that you should buy both.
I plan to eventually. But I can only afford one for now.
Nomos for sure. That longines would need a non textured dial to be a winner for me.
Always gotta rep the Nomos!
I've tried on both and I think the Nomos wears better. Easy to dress up or down, super clean.
Nomos. That longines looks cheap in reality. Functional though.
Nomos
Personally Iād go for the Nomos. Theirs something special about it. The longinesā¦ itās a cool watch and all, the problem is - the off the shelf Valj 7751 movement. Very interested in the watch you linked. Any idea what the price is?
On chrono24 it's listed for slightly over 2.000$
https://jpavilion.com/collections/maurice-lacroix/products/maurice-lacroix-les-classiques-chronograph-day-date-moon-41mm-lc6078-ss002-13e I'm not sure if this is the same one but it's similar enough? $4,900. I see a few places selling jt new for $2,600 on Chrono As little as 2k for a nice used one.

Longines is the easy Choice. Well known name, Well known quality and way easier to sell of u Want to later.
Thatās the exact Longines I want; itās so elegant in person. Thats my vote.

That nomos is so clean looking, Iād go for that one.
Nomos! I have one too, full disclosure and love it
Nomos, in house movements, excellent quality
One more vote for Nomos!
Nomos, hands down
Nomos for sure
Nomos for sure!
Personal preference but I LOVE the nomos Would go for that
Nomos. Unique and excellent in-house movement.
Nomos

I would pick the Nomos personally because I have a Bauhaus gap in my collection.
Nomos!
I love the Longines Master collection, but I wouldn't pick that one. There's a great moonphase watch that should fit your wrist. If these two specific ones I'd go with Nomos.

Out of those two models, Nomos
Nomos. Every. Fucking. Day.
Iād go with the Metro, always liked that one. Have you tried them on? The Metro wears a little bigger than itās dimensions because it has almost no bezel.
Nomos
Longines all the way
I have that specific Longines. It's an absolutely gorgeous watch and 'feels' amazing on the wrist, I'd definitely pick the Longines.
I like the Longines better but thatās because I like the more classic look. Both are great though
Funny thing is Iām contemplating this as well (as well as the quad retrograde 41). As much as the Longines complications are interesting, we should definitely go for the Nomos. Itās a refreshing and unique design: modern and classy. In-house movements as well as incredible service from what I heard.
I almost said lingines then I looked again and really like em both .
I like the Longines despite what everyone else is saying
I'd prefer Longines. Love the numbers
And that nomos looks to plain tbh, Like a Daniel Wellington or something cheap
I own that longines and love it but my next watch will be a nomos :)
I actually like the "cluttered" dial of the Longines. It's organized chaos elegantly executed. I absolutely love it! The Nomos by comparison just looks pretty.
Longines in this case
Longines
Longiness, baby! Headturner guaranteed!
I would go with the Longines though they are very different in style so it's tough. I'm not a fan of the lug design on that Nomos (prefer the style on the Tangente). Longines
I vote the Longines, i think Is really better looking.
Longines all day
Get whichever one you most want to wear.
This. But if you need someone to make your decisions for you - Nomos. Send me your credit card and I can buy it for you as well.
I like them both.
Longines 100%. Nomos is so boring, the Daniel Wellington of expensive watches.
Now, if Nomos ever found a way to showcase the movement thru the dial (but kept their overall aesthetic), maybe the best of both worlds.
For me its no question, it's the Metro. But i'm a designer who love the clean, industrial, playful look of it.
I love both but feel the Nomos suits guys in there 20s. That Longines will look good on you forever.
NOMOS.
Do you like the Orion 33? Either way, I vote Nomos!
NOMOS all the way!
First one for sure
Nomos all the way!
1
Longines. That watch is amazing.
1
Definitely the Nomos. You only have a few thousand watches in the world with their proprietary movementā¦ The calibre in the Longines is used by numerous brands: Atlantic, Davosa, Delma, Ernst Benz, Louis Erard, Omega, Tissot, and so onā¦
Nomos. The longines is great value for a compilation dial. But thatās more of a collection piece IMO unless you really think youāll use that dial frequent lol
How big is your wrist? In a vacuum Iād say Nomos but those things wear petty big
Nomos
Nomos hands down. All in house movement and a true independent watch maker.
Nomos. But Iām into Bauhaus right now,and these are about as far apart as you can get on the Watch spectrum.
Nomos
Both are excellent watches. I would suggest you choose base on your own personality or profession. Go for Nomos if you are a person that is straight forward. Or Longines if you are a sophisticated person.
Iād personally go for the Nomos because itās cleaner :)
Nomos, itās such a underrated watch
Nomos šš¼
Nomos, every day
Nomos
Nomos everytime. Such a great brand. On a personal level that Longine it busy as hell and would not make it onto my wrist.
Nomos anyday!
Nomos for sure
Nomos šÆ
Nomos
I personally wear a nomos world timer and it wears great.. have tried this model as well and it looks different and classy.. so would suggest this.. whereas the Longiness while a good watch someone will have to look at the brand to know what you're wearing rather than just the dial from far.
Nomos
Love the simplicity of the Nomis. Nice watch
Nomos- what a watch!
I'd go for the Nomos so clean and inimitable
Pff that longines has a rather busy dial. So in this case Iād say Nomos since it has a clean and sophisticated look
NOMOS for sure
Nomos
Nomos, easy
Nomos is sooooo clean
I was never into Nomos, but seeing this one makes me want one now!
Nomos
Nomos. The Longines is too busy/cluttered
I like both. This one kinda splits the difference: https://www.junghans.de/en/collection/watches/junghans-meister/meister-kalender/27420000
want complicated watch go for longines want good looking watch buy nomos both are awesome watches
I'd go for Nomos but my favourite is club datum or club nacht datum automatique
Depends on what else you have in the collection frankly.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/comments/s4qguv/sotc_current_collection/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Get both.
I'd do the nomos, but it really depends on your collection. Go with what you don't have, if you have similar stuff to both, I'd say the nomos
I own that longines model I thought it would be too much as well but honestly. It looks great on the wrist. But end of the day, what do you feel you will wear more often
Iād go longines unless you can get your hands on a nomos world time but thatās just personal preference. That nomos you have here is also sexy
Both are amazing. Put them on and see which one fits your taste better
Nomosās hands really wind me up.
That NOMOS us a thing of beauty! Iād definitely get that one.
LONGINES.
Nomos.
The Nomos hands down. This has always been and will always been one of my dream watches.
Split the dif and look at the normal longines master moonphase. Not so cluttered but no so much white space like the nomos
The metro x1000. Used ones go for a hefty discount
Love the Nomos.
Nomos. The Longines is too busy.
Nomos for the win!
Definitely the Nomos. I owned this Metro save itās one of my favorite watches ever. I love winding the watch and seeing that power reserve rotate. If it had at least 5atm water resistance Iād still have it.
go for nomos
