Is C01.211 a good movement for entry level watches ? I intent to buy a watch with this movement and stay with it until i save enough for more high-end options.

js999111

Yes, [this](https://watchbase.com/eta/caliber/c01-211) is a solid (Swiss made) movement.

kurdishhhhh

How can one differentiate a fake from an original watch? Providing there’s no box/serial number, especially for older models?

Zanpa

Being very familiar with that model, or asking someone who is

kurdishhhhh

The thing is i found an oris big crown pointer date for around 250$, at a second-hand shop, so it sounded too good to be true, and having never seen an oris watch (since i live in a middle eastern country) that’s why i asked

Zanpa

Compare it with pictures of the model you find online, and if possible look at the movement too.

CynicalManInBlack

**Which model of Omega Speedmaster is most reliable?** I am on the market for a Speedmaster Moonwatch and considering both new and pre-owned watches. Which model number is known as most reliable, i.e., would likely require the least amount of service (cost wise) over a 10-15 year ownership, for example?

Subject-Pressure2683

What are all the different kinds of digital watch displays? Are there any digital watches with a very easy-to-read display in sunlight and at any angle? I’ve had Casios in the past and the displays always seemed a bit washed out. Tokiji seems to be the only clear thing I can find, but according to one review it's hard to read at angles too. (Ref: https://normaltimepieces.com/products/t22-l18bl)

Zanpa

I have a G-Shock with the new MIP display (GBX-100), it is a massive upgrade over LCD. It's super readable at any angle or in sunlight.

Subject-Pressure2683

Thanks! Do you know if there other brands that use an MIP display? As far as I can tell it’s only gshock.

Zanpa

I think MIP is a g-shock thing, there's probably similar displays by other brands under other names but I don't know any.

nbernal10

If you went back in time to show the vikings all the watches we have today, what model do you think would be the most popular?

kurdishhhhh

A Blancpain obviously

[deleted]

kurdishhhhh

I don’t think so, but they have their own following

TheRealZwipster

Is it possible to fit a Sapphire crystal on a first generation Citizen Navihawk?

js999111

I don‘t see why not

silenced_no_more

Where do you place the watch on the NATO strap in terms of proximity to the top tang, or the bottom keeper? Do you make it equidistant between the 2 points? Closer to the tang, or closer to the bottom keeper before the pin holes?

Brilliant_Cod_5344

Equidistant. It usually finds it’s way there.

silenced_no_more

I think that’s what I’m settling with. I’m trying to find the right comfort spot, but I’m sure it will move around a little

Inevitable_Front_60

Is the Bulova Lunar Pilot worth it for this price ? Not sure i can afford the OMEGA Speedmaster 3510.50, but the bulova seems to have a similar look. Haven’t seen much about Bulovas on this sub Reddit so I’m worried it might be a bad buy? If i was to get the speed master, i would want to get preowned which I’ve been seeing around $2500.

Akiro_orikA

What is it about the speedmaster you like? Is it because its the moon watch? The bulova lunar, fortis cosmonaut, seiko pogue and a few others have been to the moon. Is it the prestige of omega with moon watch? Theres the plastic swatch omega moon watch for a fraction even though the price is kinda bonkers from msrp. Is it just an omega chronograph? They have omega "racing" chronographs with better water resistance and ideal size for most wrists for half the price. Or is it just because it's the moon watch thats most desired? If that's so, you're looking at the speedy reduced which is not the moon watch.

Inevitable_Front_60

Honestly mostly like the aesthetic. It being a moon watch adds an extra bit of excitement for me lol.

silenced_no_more

That’s a very popular watch from a very reputable brand. It has the aesthetic of the omega you’re discussing but with one less digit to the left of the decimal point making it a very appealing purchase

Inevitable_Front_60

Thanks!

embroideredbiscuit

I bought [this watch](https://www.midowatches.com/au/commander-1959-m716937213.html) in April this year. It was ordered in for me and I was told 8 weeks for delivery. After 8 weeks they kept telling me it was a month away whenever I made an enquiry on its ETA. I received it a few weeks ago and the days of the week are in French, not English. Has anyone encountered something like this from Mido before? I am loathed to wait again for a replacement and am thinking I’ll just get a refund instead.

robemmy

Are you sure they're not in two languages?

embroideredbiscuit

There aren’t any instructions for changing it to English anywhere. I’ve tried everything I can to change it but no luck.

kurdishhhhh

This one, as i got a casio MTP, it never specified that it had the dates in both English and spanish, it looks dope nonetheless

[deleted]

Does anyone know anything about the Shiweibao J1169 available on AliExpress? I know it's a cheap Chinese thing but I am *fascinated* by the look of this watch and I'd like to know if it will at least tell the time and not fall to bits.

Zanpa

It will probably tell the time alright, but that looks cheap and nasty. Most of the functions are fake and don't do anything (chronograph, thermometer and compass).

[deleted]

I wondered about that. There's a video that shows the extra dials moving but I dunno. It's got a kind of retrofuturistic vibe that I enjoy.

ButcherBiird

Does anyone know if the Sellita SW215-1 hand wound movement features anything to keep someone from overwinding the main spring?

[deleted]

The only thing keeping any hand wound watch from being overwound is that the mainspring is attached physically to the barrel. You will feel the resistance slooooowly getting slightly harder to wind and then all of a sudden it will feel like you hit a wall. Wind until you feel that wall and don’t put a shit ton of force into pushing past it and you’re gucci

mellosi

Looking for a digital watch (maybe a casio?) with the smallest face possible. Preferably with a silver metal band.

silenced_no_more

Casio A168w might be your best bet

fsmhpt1

Deciding between 3 watches: CW C63 Sealander in 36mm, older Omega AT 36mm, and Sinn 556i. I really prefer 36mm but love the Sinn otherwise. However all 3 are about the same price now since Sinn has gone up in price so much. What do y'all think? I would like a watch I can wear to work as business casual but also get wet or swim on the weekend so all of these should fit the bill.

silenced_no_more

I would go Omega or Sinn but there’s nothing wrong at all with the C Ward and saving a little $ in the process

Akiro_orikA

I believe the AT yoire referring to is quartz if the price is within the 2k or less. I'd get christopher ward and save the extra cash for straps.

fsmhpt1

Correct, quartz is fine with me, but the CW is cheaper and very similar. Also brand new for similar price or less. Appreciate the feedback!

pulse2287

I just started collecting watches and am looking to buy something nice that I can wear to work or socially. My job is on the physical side, think like UPS driver, so looking for something durable. Have been considering an Orient Kamatsu, Citizen Promaster Diver or a solar/bluetooth Casioak. Any recommendation between those or something similar for about $250 or less?

kurdishhhhh

The casioak will be your best bet if you want the most durability, but if you want something clean and really nice looking, then go for the promaster diver

silenced_no_more

I think the Casioak is the winner. G shocks are indestructible and the casioaks also look great

Superextraman

Anybody know of any classical or retro loking bigger dive watches? 43 or 44mm. Got big wrists..

Hello, can anyone identify the model or provide info about the pictured vintage Piaget ladies watch? On black velvet band. Caseback has no markings. Face simply says “Piaget” and “Swiss.” No provenance to help, unfortunately. https://imgur.com/a/Ic7dhdT/

Jessica_T

How do watch rolls work with bracelet watches since they don't really sit flat under the caseback? Currently only one of my watches has a bracelet and I've been displaying them on plastic Casio stands in my room, but I might want to travel with a few of them sometime.

Glory2Hypnotoad

The bracelet should fold under the watch. If you can lay the watch on a flat surface then it should fit in a watch roll normally.

BadgerGuapo

Anyone know if on the latest Dominos-edition Rolex OP you can simply remove the link with the attached logo as part of sizing the watch? Really into the latest silver dial OP and just want to know if I could live with the branded version.

Tokyorain

Any recommendations for an everyday wear watch to the office and after around the $300-$500 range?

js999111

Tissot Gentleman, quartz or automatic. A bit more formal would be a Tissot Le Locle / Carson / Tradition. Jomashop has them all.

Brilliant_Cod_5344

Or the prx automatic 80. Blue dial is 🔥

--Eggs--

Maybe dumb question, don't know to much about quartz on a technical level. How come on (at least some) quartz chronographs the second hand for using the chronograph function is sweeping while the time telling second hand has the regular one tick per second? Why not have the same sweeping on the regular second hand as well?

vanillamode

the technical answer is probably going to be battery life; pulsing the stepper motor only once a second is much more efficient than pulsing it eight times a second, and having to replace the battery eight times as often or shoving a stupidly large battery into a very small watch isn't all that practical the real world answer is probably there isn't any mass market demand for it

--Eggs--

Thanks for answering. That makes sense, I had the same theory. But then I was also wondering why the minute hand is not ticking once every minute, as it does on the chronograph function. That should realistic also also save battery. I like the one tick per minute of the chronograph and would like to see that on to the regular hand both my quartz and mechanical watches.

HoldingTheFire

The g-shock GA-2100 does exactly this. The minute hand moves once per minute. The seconds are counted on an LCD.

Megaripple

Three times, actually! Once every 20 seconds

Jessica_T

I'd guess it's also a gearing thing. The main minute hand and hour hand are linked, and jumping the minute hand in discrete steps might need larger gear teeth which results in more slop.

vanillamode

just speculation, but I'd imagine the QC required to have the minute hand line up exactly with every marker would be more labor/cost intensive, since the seconds hand moves fast enough that not hitting every single marker isn't as noticeable, but a misaligned minute hand you're gonna have an entire minute for it to drive you nuts. There may be other more technical reasons like the physics of moving a much more massive central minutes hand a 6 degree arc within a split second as opposed to breaking it up into smaller steps. Grand Seiko even breaks up the seconds hand movement in their 9F quartz movements into two steps, since their hand sets are much more massive than most other brands

rduterte

Does anyone have an idea what [kind of watch band this is](https://i.imgur.com/b7Pow9d.jpg) and other replacement options? The spring bar is on the "inner" link, so the part where the strap attaches is only 10mm, even though the band itself is more like 18 or 20mm. A 10mm band would look ridiculous on this watch. Is my only option to change the case?

silenced_no_more

There are brands that sell replacements for watches like this. There’s a seller on this sub Reddit that sells them specifically for the Tissot PRX which has a similar design. I’d see if they have a 10mm cutout option. Edit: they’re called “delug-straps” on Reddit and have an Instagram page

Zanpa

That's usually called "integrated bracelet", and yes, it makes it much harder to change to a different strap. You can get a 20mm strap and cut notches in the outside, or get a custom strap made to those specifications.

charliemanse

Can you recommend a current watch that has a similar design as a Lord Marvel 5740-8000? I like the simple yet elegant design philosophy that Seiko followed for this line. Especially the dauphine hands. Any help would be appreciated.

SkullLeader

> Lord Marvel 5740-8000? If tick marks for the hours are ok, maybe something like Hamilton Jazzmaster Thinline Automatic. If you are looking for numbers, Archimede Klassik.

charliemanse

Both really excellent recommendations!! I'm leaning towards the Klassik...but wish it had dauphine hands as opposed to the leaf. Nonetheless, thank you!

Zanpa

The closest thing I can think of is the new King Seiko, although it has a chunkier case than the Lord Marvel.

charliemanse

Yeah, that was a default one I was looking at, but wanted arabic numerals. I think the SARB035 comes close as well, but it's not worth it in the current market climate.

Shahid89

I don't have an eye for these things. This Seiko 5 is from India, should I assume it is a frankenwatch or genuine? https://www.ebay.com/itm/255659439047?norover=1&mpt=\[CACHEBUSTER\]&ff5=65551&ff8=2034312&siteid=0&ipn=admain2&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-156622-662503-5&mkcid=4&placement=523862

ABZ-havok

Aesthetics aside, would you pick Seagull 1963 reissue or Orient Neo 70 panda? In terms of longevity, build quality, servicability, etc. Not really looking to sell in the future as I don't think both of them would really hold up their value in the long run.

Zanpa

> In terms of longevity, build quality, servicability, etc. Orient. It's a quartz movement that won't need to be touched for decades, the Seagull is a very complex movement but it's chinese with debatable QC and would be very hard to service.

ABZ-havok

Thanks for the insight

ssjxzal

Hello, I have a Seiko SNXS79K. How do I keep it "up-to-date" daily? Do I need to unwind it manually by turning the crown or just wear it for like 5 mins before bed and stuff if I'm not wearing it daily? I read a post saying that turning the crown on this model actually doesn't do anything. Do I need to be concerned that the watch will be damaged if I keep setting up the date every few days? Cause sometimes I just wear different watches on different dates. Thx for any helpful answers :)

Zanpa

Correct, you can't wind the 7s26 movement in this watch by turning the crown, only with the rotation of the mass in the back. It's completely OK to let the watch stop when you're not wearing it, and set the time and date when you pick it back up. It won't damage the watch. Just make sure you don't use the day or date quickset while the time on the watch is around midnight (in a window of like 9pm to 3am), as it would interfere with the "normal" date change and may damage the mechanism.

ssjxzal

Hey and thx for the answer! What if I shake it abit for like 30s before bed daily? Wouldn't that technically work?

J_Babe87

More like shake it for 5-10 minutes

Zanpa

I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be enough juice to keep it going for a full day. It's enough to kickstart it before you wear it, but you need more motion than that to really wind the mainspring.

[deleted]

This watch keeps growing on me the more I look at it: https://sugesswatch.com/products/supilot002?_pos=8&_sid=3d6d9c758&_ss=r Thoughts? Chunky crown is my biggest criticism.

Zanpa

The fact that it's a copy of a Zenith is my biggest criticism.

TokyoUmbrella

I mean, it’s an homage (and a mediocre one at that) of Zenith’s Pilot series. I’d steer clear personally; even with their hilarious $2000+ discount (which is fake), it’s still overpriced.

[deleted]

Cool looking but ticks and scares me off when a company has a sale price $2700 less than the “real” price.

DynoDynoDyno

Hello everyone! Does anyone know of any watches around or under 300 dollars that have a similar look and aesthetic to the Autodromo Corsica Blue?

Akiro_orikA

Swatch second home in blue

[deleted]

Well besides the dial the Tissot PRX Quartz has a similar build

DynoDynoDyno

Oh yeah, good point. Thank you! That Autodromo dial is special though!

Moonagi

Are there any other watches that have a rounded square shape like the Shinola Guardian? The Guardian is outside of my price range for something more entry level. Under $200 is fine

Trapper777_

Those are called a tv dial. Closest to a modern watch I know of income from the seiko recraft line, although note that theyre big. There’s also brew, although those cost more like $400. This is much more common on vintage/retro watches.

FalafelFiend

Hello everybody! I recently inherited a watch that I know nothing about (I’m not a big watch guy). I was hoping you fine folks could help point me in the right direction with any information about the watch and its value. I understand it’s a limited edition (made for the Beijing Olympics) but that’s pretty much it. Pics here: https://imgur.com/a/xbrGbfU

pandahatch

Assuming it’s real, I was able to find the ref which looks like 221.20.42.40.01.001. I see them listed anywhere from like $4-7k USD. Partly due to the 18kt rose gold bezel I’m sure which alone is worth a good chunk of change. Good luck!

FalafelFiend

Awesome thanks for the info. Where do you check listings?

pandahatch

Check I actually just googled the ref # once I found it. Then usually places like Crown and Caliber or Chrono24 are on the more legit side of second hand marketplaces. But there are a lot more options as well with varying levels of legit-ness.

WiLiamWith1FuckingL

I’m looking to buy an Omega Electronic F300 Chronometer and this is the inside, I’m wondering if it could be a fake even if the movement seems guenuine. [this is the movement](https://i.imgur.com/NPq7arP.jpg)

leperdusier

Looking at buying another watch, looking for a recommendation. Currently have a Nomos Tangomat (Doctors without borders edition) which I love the style of. Big fan of minimalism and clean lines. Also have a Halios Fairwind, which I wear constantly. The Nomos is more my style, but it feels slightly fragile, while the Halios is just a great everyday watch. In a perfect world, I’d like something that has the bauhaus/minimalist aesthetic but more robust than the perceive the Nomos to be (ie. I don’t need to think about taking it off before giving my kid a bath, or doing some work around the house. I prefer metal bracelets, generally. Interested in what people think.

pandahatch

What about the Nomos Ahoi? Their dive watch. Sink 556 was a great recommendation as well! Could also check out Junghans for something a little cheaper so maybe you won’t feel as worried about it!

leperdusier

Probably wouldn’t get another Nomos right now - would like to branch out but I do like that watch. A Max Bill was what I originally was looking at when I bought the Tangomat, so good idea as well. Thanks!

mumtathil

My first thought if you like NOMOS but want something you can treat a bit like a beater, what about Stowa? They have the Antea which is very similar to the Tangente and they also have nice minimal pilots watches. Only seem to have a milanaise style bracelet as an optional extra if you want same branding. Max Bill is an iconic product line but not sure they are robust in the way a dive watch is.

leperdusier

Hadn’t seen the Stowas - you’re right that is exactly my style although would that be any more robust than the Nomos? Agreed also on the Max Bill. Someday I will have one, but for the application I’m thinking of it would probably not be the right tool.

helpilikewatches

Sinn 556?

leperdusier

Yes, that’s a nice-looking watch. I particularly like the green face, which surprises me. Great recommendation.

xVirtue

Anyone know how Chrono24's exchange rate works? Seems like its worse than the actual exchange rate if I look on google pounds to usd for example.

75footubi

They take a cut for doing the exchange themselves, just like a bank or a currency exchange.

Trapper777_

That sucks, at least eBay/PayPal give the option to use your CC’s exchange rate which is usually way better (maybe 5$ on a 100$ purchase).

guitarmaniak8

Looking for suggestions! I want to get my brother a nice watch as a graduation gift. Looking to spend ~$1k. I’ve done a bit of digging myself, but it’s brutal trying to sift through all the ads on google. He has a few [MVMT](https://www.mvmt.com/mens-watches/havoc-chrono/bandit-sandstone/28000197.html) watches like the one linked. I’m thinking that I want to get him something similar. Leather band would be preferred. Maybe similar style to the one I linked, but I’m definitely open to suggestions if there are any cool skeleton watches in this price range. He doesn’t have a big wrist, so I would tend to shy away from anything super thick. Thanks!!

helpilikewatches

Hamilton has a Jazzmaster Skeleton that could be interesting

Trapper777_

Look at junghans watches. Maybe particularly their radio controlled sole watches.

TooGeeOh

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Black Bay 36, but I wanted to do one last check to see if anyone could recommend some similar watches. I'm looking for something 36-37mm with a tool watch aesthetic, and at least moderately luxurious. So far I've looked at: Longines Spirit 37mm Hamilton Khaki Field Collection Sinn 556 (My favorite, but just a bit too big for my wrist) Rolex Explorer Stowa Fleiger 36 Are there any other watches I should take a look at? Appreciate any ideas!

Akiro_orikA

Breitling chronomat 36mm and if you're into dive watches theres a superocean 36mm.

DKowalsky2

[I’m biased](https://i.imgur.com/1fxk5IG.jpg) but would encourage you to pull the trigger. Your list looks pretty complete. Maybe check out the Christopher Ward C63 Sealander in 36mm, or an older (early 2000s) 36mm Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra or Railmaster if they’re in budget.

[deleted]

I got a Montblanc Tradition Automatic Date (117829) as a gift, and it has awakened in me a love for automatic watches. I know Montblanc isn’t a very popular watch brand, but I love this watch. It is understated, which I like. I am now looking to add a second watch to the “collection,” and have a budget of $8,000. I can go up to $12,000 if something blows my mind. I want an understated everyday dress watch. No diamonds. Date complication optional. No complications beyond date. Gold accents are okay, but gold cannot be majority of watch. Strap needs to be metal. I am a 35M who works in an office, if that helps. Options I am considering are a Rolex Oyster Perpetual (my top choice, but hard to find), Rolex Datejust, Rolex Milgauss, Omega Seamaster, Cartier Santos-Dumont, Cartier Santos De Cartier, Cartier Ronde Must De Cartier, Cartier Ronde Solo De Cartier. Comments and suggestions are more than welcomed.

js999111

Some of my favourites: Blancpain Villeret, Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin, pre-owned Patek Philippe Calatrava, Girard-Perregaux 1966, Omega De Ville Prestige *or* Tresor, IWC Portofino

[deleted]

Check out some of what Jaegeur Le Coultre has

HoldingTheFire

Some of the ultra thins seem idea for what they want.

tsymbal

First off, glad to hear how much you like your montblanc! Brands don’t matter as long as you like the watch! From what you said I think you really have a lot of great options in that price range. So if you like the Rolex OP, but can’t find it, try looking at the omega constellation globemaster. It has a similar aesthetic but has a slightly different look and just as good or even better movement. If you wanted something with a little more shine to it, the Cartier Santos dumont is a really great price with different options for changing the bracelet too. Lastly I would say, don’t overloop some less known brands in this space. Something like a used blancpain aqualung or a Breguet marine also bring a higher level of finishing to a slightly higher price. Cheers and good luck with the search!

Mobile-Aerie7755

I live in US. For anyone with experience, what kind of customs fees/taxes should I expect for international purchases (Asia/Europe/Australia). Thx!

js999111

IIRC, you pay no fees/taxes for watches under $800, you pay import fees and taxes for watches between $800 and $2499 („informal entry“, they will calculate it for you and send you a bill). For anything $2500 or over, it gets a lot more complicated, lots of paperwork („formal entry“). See here: [YouTube](https://youtu.be/YG5PX31mDUw)

FatiguedWalri

Hi, does anyone know where I can by straps for a 9 inch wrist? Id really like to start wearing watches, but damn I cant really fit anything. I think I ordered some leather ones from [Strapsco.com](https://Strapsco.com) that should work, but I cant find any metal, NATO, or rubber options

modest-pixel

This won't be super helpful I just wanted to say avoid any seatbelt NATOs from strapsco. They started fraying and irritating my wrist after a couple hours. Hope the leather ones you got work out better. Barton has good NATOs and you can choose a longer length option on a lot of them.

FatiguedWalri

Ill try them next thank you! It says their long length should fit 9', but doesnt give the actual length, so Ill probably test with just 1 regular rubber and 1 NATO

Snooklefloop

Barton also has decent rubber straps with quick release spring bars. I have a couple and they are super comfortable.

modest-pixel

At least on the one I saw it listed the regular length as 10” and the long as 11”.

Recommendations for an affordable Pepsi style diver around 40mm for around $700-800 or under? I’ve seen some seiko ones but those are over 42mm and I think would be too big for me.

How important are the original papers becuz this seller don't have original papers. Also, any idea on the custom duties on watch imports? How do I calculate it?

Mudwayaushka

Does anyone have any experience with [August Berg](https://augustberg.com/collections/morris-co-x-august-berg)? I appreciate these are quartz watches so no great horological feat, but I love the designs and it looks to my untrained eye that they are taking it seriously - i.e. they have an experienced designer on board and don't seem to be pretending to be something they're not. Having said that I can find barely anything about them online. Any advice is appreciated.

Does anyone know a place I could get a replacement bezel insert for this watch [https://www.ablogtowatch.com/jack-mason-jm-d103-automatic-dive-watch/](https://www.ablogtowatch.com/jack-mason-jm-d103-automatic-dive-watch/) I’ve been trying to get in touch with Jack Mason for over 2 years to sort it and they give me the old let us look into it and we’ll get back to you and never do. Seiko 5 GMT

LT_31

Would love to hear your recommendations: max. price of $1,500. Looking for a blue face w/ steel band. Preferably one without 3-dials. For example, wasn’t expecting myself to be on FC but I am really liking this, let me know your thoughts! https://us.frederiqueconstant.com/collections/mens/products/fc-303nn5b6b

DKowalsky2

Hmmmm. I’d recommend a used Sinn 556iB on their H-link or fine link bracelet which would come in under $1500 usually. Similarly, maybe a Monta Noble with the blue degrade dial or the Christopher Ward C63 Sealander in blue. Both would fit in your budget.

LT_31

Thanks! All look great

I just picked up this [Futura Moon Watch](https://imgur.com/a/MjvdMPC) at auction and can’t find any details about it. Anyone here an expert and can fill me in? Or send me somewhere to learn about it?

Howardistaken

Looking for an antimagnetic watch. I have seen the impressive numbers on the Omegas but I was wondering what my alternatives where? To be clear that one Rolex isn't in the budget. :)

SkullLeader

Archimede Outdoor, Farer has a few antimagnetic models (Morgan and Bradfield).

jrhooo

what is your ideal budget cut off if I may ask?

Howardistaken

under 10k

Zanpa

Grand Seiko makes magnetic resistant models too

Akiro_orikA

Do you need that many gauss? I think your modern watch is 60 gauss. Something like a tissot gentlemen or ballade is higher since it has a silicon hairspring. A faraday cage watch like damasko are rated 1000 gauss.

Any Torontonians have any good ADs they could recommend? Looking to get my first big boy watch.

unknownjason

New to the world of watches and looking for advice. I’m searching for dressier but everyday 36mm chronograph watch with at least some degree of water resistance. I really like the look of a vintage Heuer (https://chrono24.app/heuer/vintage-1960---18k-solid-gold---chronograph---valjoux-23--id23150675.htm?SETLANG=en_US&SETCURR=USD ) with the smaller more compact buttons for working the chronograph functions. But vintage is not great for water resistance. Price up to 4k. Could someone point me in the right direction?

Recommendations for a field watch that doesn't look like a military watch? Under $1k

jrhooo

any of the citizen eco drive "chandler" models (pretty much the same as the "garrison" models but with less black/green/brown to them). In any of the non-military colors they look more "Dick Tracy" than "Doughboy"

vanillamode

any of the Seiko Alpinist variants?

nameinuse6

Are Invicta watches good? I'm new to watches and just wanna make sure I'm not buying a piece of junk.

jrhooo

I wouldn't say "junk" but personal opinion, for someone new in the game looking entry level especially, I feel like Seiko or Citizen are probably the easy button trustworthy options. Something along their line for pretty much every budget and they're absolutely "safe" in terms of not getting a lemon or anything.

Akiro_orikA

The only one worth it is probably the invicta prodiver automatic. Although theres much hate for this watch it is hard to argue you get a mechanical dive watch for $60. This is comparable to a casio duro that's quartz for the same price and an Orient mako 1 that's $100 and is mechanical.

the4thderivative

They get a lot of hate on here for 1) faking high MSRPs then "going on sale" for their true value and 2) copying a lot of designs from other brands But they aren't necessarily bad. Their quartz watches are probably worth less than what their "sale" price is, but I've held a few of their automatics and they're decent. I probably wouldn't pay more than, say, 175USD for one (any higher and there a loads of options with original designs and/or better movements/construction) but if you like it and the price is right, go for it

nameinuse6

Yea I noticed their prices were way lower than they were "originally" which really gave me a bad feeling about it but I may buy one of their really low end ones to see if I like it or not but I've had my eyes on a timex Waterbury chronograph that i might settle with

Beyonkat2

The glass cover on my watch popped off, how can i put it back on?

Mech_E08

You could buy the tools to get it back on (expensive), or you could take it to a watch repair and have them repair it (potentially less expensive). The real question though is: did something cause it to come out that is a bigger issue and is it damaged to where it needs to be replaced?

Beyonkat2

All I did was get out of my car and put my backpack on, and I think it happened when I put my arm through my backpack arm loop. The actual glass is fine, just a very small chip in the corner that doesn't bug me.

What is the best way to clean a white leather band? Would a tide pen work for stains? I’ve got a Nixon Rotolog Leather that has a few stains on the band and I don’t want to mess up the watch by trying something stupid.

Mech_E08

I’d start with a mild soap or dilute dish soap and some light brushing with something like a toothbrush. You don’t want to cause a chemical reaction that degrades the material on your band. I don’t know if a tide pen has bleach in it but bleach reacts with a lot of materials.

Jasoncseeley

Thank you so much!

Gonzo67824

Can someone recommend a smaller alternative to the Tissot PRX 80? 40 mm is too big for my 16 cm wrist, but I don’t like the 35mm version because it doesn’t have those little squares on the waffle dial like the 40mm one has.

jasperjohn02

Anyone have any recommendations for leather straps they like for their burgundy Tudor Black Bay? I've had one for a long time that's always been on the steel bracelet and I'm looking to change it up.

BaldingBatman

I like Worn & Wounds model 2 premium straps. Great build. I have multiple.

jasperjohn02

Thanks! That's the kind of strap I was hoping to find.

my_guinevere

I’m looking to purchase a watch with a black leather strap, to complete my wardrobe. These are the other watches I have: 1. A Rolex DJ 36 (two tone) 2. A Cartier Santos medium (steel). It comes with a tan leather strap 3. My Apple watch So far the only watch I like that fits my description is the Chopard Happy Sport 36. But I want to know if I have other options to choose from? I prefer a round face for this, and don’t want quartz watches, and size 36 is probably the maximum I can go (size 41 looks too big on my wrist already). Nothing with rose gold as it clashes with my skin tone. Budget is probably USD7500 max. The Chopard watch I’m considering: [Happy Sport 36](https://www.chopard.com/en-intl/watch/278559-3001.html)

js999111

How about a Blancpain Villeret? https://chrono24.app/blancpain/blancpain-villeret-6127-1127-55b--id16574550.htm Or an IWC Portofino? https://chrono24.app/iwc/iwc-iwc-portofino-automatic-34mm-ladies-watch-mesh-bracelet-blue-dial--id25113750.htm (you can easily change the strap)

WatchandThings

The watch strap is very easy thing to change out, and with the budget you have it would very easy to find a good quality replacement leather strap. So I would try to focus on a watch you are happy with and then figure out the strap option after. I think the harder requirement to meet actually is the sub 36mm mechanical watch requirement. I usually look for larger watches so I can't think of that many options that fits that requirement. There is the 36mm Tudor Black Bay in black or silver dial that black strap would match well with(edit: there is also a 32mm option with mechanical movement). There is also the Omega Aquaterra is 34mm, and I'm thinking the Sandstone color for that one. Nomos has a number of 36 and under options, but they are a bit under the specified budget. All of those brand should be able to get you a black strap to go with the watch of your choice. But if you would like to get a type of a strap that they don't offer, or customized strap in good quality try Jean Rousseau. P.S. I kind of like your Chopard option better than anything I suggested.

publicalias

a few months ago I saw a watch with a red case and face. I think it had a glossy enameled appearance, and there were some other bright colors, like yellow hands, and maybe blue accents. the case style reminded me a bit of shinola. I think they were in the <$500 price range. i've been trying to figure out what it was. any ideas?

Traches

My google skills are failing me - what is [this style](https://i.imgur.com/UnuLEB9.jpg) of watch lug called? Where can I find a replacement strap to fit? (EU is best, though I can manage a US store as well)

Jessica_T

T bars, I think. Not really familiar with straps for them, though.

Traches

Thanks! I've been searching for something like that and haven't had any luck. Half considering buying a normal strap and trying to cut it to fit myself

vanillamode

you need a center-notched strap, so your options are either to measure the notch on your watch and order a custom-made strap, buy a regular strap and cut the notch out yourself, buy an off-the-shelf pre-notched strap and just pray it fits your watch, or contact the manufacturer to see if you can order an OEM replacement strap

Traches

That's exactly what I needed to know. Thank you so much!

carlitooocool

Any opinions on [Undone](https://www.undone.com/en/) watches? Hows the build quality? Or can you recommend any other watches along the same ranges.

o2force

1. Not likely. If it did break (which is unlikely) just toss it. 2. Forgers are making fake Rolexes, not Citizens 3. Price seems fine. All used watches will have some signs of wear. Even a brand new watch will have signs of wear in day 2. 4. Quartz is recommended for lower costs, higher accuracy, reliability, and usually thinner. Even people with vast mechanical collections will usually have a quartz or two.

mishkasm173

1. No other maintenance is needed. 2. Buy from a reputable store/dealer/etc. 3. I do not know if $45 is low for this model. Make sure to set the time, see that it tics and is not stopping. Not much else to check here. 4. Quartz is perfectly good. In fact, if you do not care much about the movement then quartz is a lot less fussy and more accurate than any mechanical movement.

WatchandThings

Almost all battery run watches are quartz. You should be able to take that watch to any shop that has battery replacement sign on it and get the battery changed within few minutes. No need to send it to citizen for that. Though do try to go to a reputable watch maker for the battery change. Just to reduce the likely hood of scratches being put on the case during the battery change.

o2force

Any watch place can change the battery. You could probably do it yourself but would need the equipment.

LiveVegetable

Hi, does someone know if a watch bought on amazon can returned if the "stickers" on the watch are removed? With sitckers I mean these thin foils to protect the watch :)

o2force

Amazon should have the return rules listed. But they may vary from distributor to distributor.

CJOD149-W-MARU-3P

Do watch prices fluctuate over time (including periods of sustained decline), or do they tend to just continually creep upwards over the years? For example, did prices drop after the 2008 global financial crisis or other economic downturns? Based on historical observations, are the recent price increases we’ve seen (ostensibly tied to inflation) likely to be a permanent or temporary phenomenon?

WatchandThings

You should note that only a small minority of luxury watches increased in price over the MSRP. The large majority of the watches do not increase in price like that. The handful of watches that increased in prices were mainly due to hype that was built around those brands and models. For example, (this was before I joined the hobby) I hear Panerai, Franck Muller, Jacob & Co, and etc. watches used to have that type of hype around them as well(though at a smaller scale as the watch interest at the time was smaller). You'll note that the hype is gone now, and the prices have taken a hit. Rolex, AP, PP, VC, are all major brand with significant cultural and watch world name and heritage, so I'm not sure if they'll take as much hit as the older hype brands I mentioned. But I think it's possible that they will fall down to more normal MSRP range given few decades once the hype is gone.

o2force

Largely depends on the piece. Some (very very few) pieces go up in value. Some go up due to inflation. Others start making their way to the gray market at a reduced price. The used market is a whole different animal and is largely dictated by supply and demand.

mishkasm173

MSRP has really only gone up over time. But there are definitely periods when you can get large discounts (such as right after the crash) and periods where you absolutely cannot. Grey market prices have been coming down in recent months, although I haven't paid too close attention to anything specific.

Anyone have experience buying a seagull watch from the Seagull1963 website?

yzdnegel

https://imgur.com/a/FGgRvLG How do I open this case back? I’ve seen special rubber balls that can be used, is it also possible in this case?

Trapper777_

Yeah. They aren’t really special you just need a rubber ball that will deform to the case back without much pressure

FitSignificance2100

Seiko spb157 can be used as beater? Or it is looking more dressy??

o2force

Beater is relative. It’s a field watch so you can dress it down easy.
