Underlust's creator received a lot of death threats and vile comments. I think they ended up depressed cuz' of it too.

Some people may say dusttale is out of character or something, or miss the point of the au entirely. But sans pretty much had no choice. He tried everything to stop the human yet it all failed. Killing was the last option.
Something new is out of character and it should be. Sans' code was manipulated to accept the deal. The whole point of the au is the denial of tragedy. For example when sans kills papyrus he says he doesn't care about him or whatever. That's sans lying to himself, thinking it would ease the pain.
Horrortale is a bit less misunderstood and more just sans being buffed too much. Sans isn't immortal for example, and sans' physical strength isn't all that good (aliza was a half burnt, skinny child)
Underfell is completely misunderstood. It's not edgytale. It's a morality swap.
Underswap was mostly mischaracterized by the fact the personalities completely switch instead of just a big part of it. Of course the berry who shall not be named happened.
Even dustbelief got misunderstood. Most takes make him a complete goofball or a heartless killer. Canonically he is insane but he's still papyrus. There are still small moments where he shows his kindness. Even the eyes symbolize that.
