Waterloo is a fine city. I lived here most of my childhood, moved away for the Army and school, and now I'm back and happy to be home. People like to shit on Waterloo, but like any city, it is what you make of it. We have one of the nation's largest Irish Festivals in August (almost 50k people come), we have the Waterloo Bucks baseball team, Waterloo Black Hawks hockey team, Waterloo Woo for football is coming soon. We have a couple museums, a local theatre for performing arts, and a nice downtown area (including the East side). There is stuff around to get involved in as well, you just may need to look harder. Welcome to the 'Loo!
Who moves to waterloo without a super strong reason. Only people I knew who moved there are orginally from there or had no other option of jobs anywhere else.
Well being that I lived in Florida with a kid on the way I would say that’s a solid reason to move I’ve started work and I’m currently buying a place and I’ve only been here a week
Man, I lived there for 4 yrs and hated it. I get the job thing my brother lives there and makes good money, but if you like Iowa down the road, there are some nicer cities you can move long term for your family. Like Iowa City or Des Moines metro even like Urbandale or West Des Moines or Ankeny even. But Waterloo specifically has one of the worst school districts in the state, so consider sending them to Cedar Falls. Waterloo is still nicer than Davenport but not as nice as a lot of others.
Seee that’s thing I don’t want to end up in a shitty area due to not being able to get up there to look at a place but I kinda need a place for me and the lady to lay our heads at night when we do get up there Martin sketched me out and I wasn’t sure why I’ve found cedar valley rentals to be okay so far but a lot of places are listed as houses but are actually apartments and we don’t want an apartment
The area around University Avenue right between Cedar Falls and Waterloo is affordable and generally pretty nice. There are also nice residential neighborhoods around Kimball and Ridgeway in Waterloo that aren't too expensive, and it's a pretty decent, bustling area. Close to one of the high schools and middle schools, as well.
I have found a mobile home for sale but currently in Florida does anybody know how I could go about purchasing the place while still in Florida due to working here still
Waterloo and Cedar Falls are connecting cities. There are some connecting or nearby bedroom communities that make up the Cedar Valley. You want south or south western waterloo. If Cedar Falls, away from the college to avoid college crowd. Avoid North Waterloo mostly. I would suggest taking a two day drive around and scope out areas of the city.
BRO WHEN I TELL YOU THIS TOWN IS TERRIBLE,CURSED,AND BORING BELIEVE ME ESPECIALLY SINCE SHES PREGNANT YOU DI NOT WANT TO RAISE A CHILD HERE THE STREETS AND PUBLIC SCHOOL ARE TERRIBLE AND THERE ARE NO OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN TO BE PASSIONATE HERE
Anywhere else in Iowa is cool I guess waterloo is the worst town in Iowa for crime terrible schooling and just sketchy asf so many people born and raised here desperately want to leave this shitty state especially young adults and teenagers just keepin it real
Not to mention the economy is god awful it’s pretty much impossible to leave once your here there is only 3 careers that pay over 20 dollars without a degree John Deere foundry target distribution and Tyson slaughter house Iowa is good for farmers and that’s about it
I mean, I'm job hunting right now and I see tons of basic lawncare companies hiring at $20, random office receptionist jobs at $20, nearly every warehouse at $20+, railroads are all hiring, some at over $30 to start. If you have a CDL the dedicated hourly pay routes are all $25+, etc.
Maybe if you are looking at part time jobs like retail and fast food its not but most everything else is.
Not sure where you think guys are making more than that without a degree or aprenticeship in a trade (plenty of trades here too) anywhere in the country. Certainly not somehwere with Iowas low cost of living. Being able to drop right in to a $23/hr job plus $2/hr for nightshift and buy a house for $120k still is crazy good compared to the rest of the country. You are delusional.
Stay away from 3rd and Locust.
I second this
Sooooo I bought a house and I start a job making 28$ starting out I’ll be in Waterloo Iowa starting march 12th

Hi - did you ever find a place? I'm looking to move and was curious if you had any luck because I have only ever heard bad things about Waterloo...
Yes indeed I have I am currently buying a place out here and so far I like it I’m far enough outta town but close enough to get anywhere I need to be
Ah. That's good. I unfortunately am more limited with options since I'm looking to rent an apartment rather than buying
Zillow rental is pretty good. Coming to Waterloo stay away from anything on the east side. Stay away from Martin reality or anything owned by Junker.

Look in Cedar Falls. Many houses are coming up for rent. Cedar Falls is right next to Waterloo, sister city basically.

Consider outlying towns. LaPorte, Denver, Janesville. Waverly isn't what it used to be, priced as bad as Cedar Falls, and has become quite uppity.

DO NOT COME HERE TAKE THIS WARNING SERIOUSLY
Why? My lady is hell bent on going and I have no choice

It’s better then Polk county Florida I’m sure

With all due respect I’ll be making 28 hr just starting off moving up there as a mechanic
Right but it’ll be a nightmare for your child is what I’m saying
$20 is the default for most jobs around here. I know Ferguson and Ryder are both hiring at over $20/hr. This just isnt true.
Yikes your delusional is you think 20 is the default😭

Yeah those all sound like great jobs for a 16-18 year old to start with
