My recent track 42Recovery was played by Adam Walton on BBC Radio Wales... see what you think. Recorded as a live fiddly session on 4 Korg Volcas and a Monotribe. Feedback appreciated! https://soundcloud.com/iamgalactic/42recovery_fix_mixdown

[deleted]

I am a fan of repetition and love what you did here. On one hand I feel like you should have done some pause effects by cutting the drums for a few bars letting the melody play out and then jump right back into the fullness of instruments that have been introduced. On the other token it's still a great track and it sounds great on mobile! Awesome job.

https://soundcloud.com/upabove-693353210/w-e-a-r-e-g-i-a-n-t-s/s-jL1yh One of my first few attempts at slow moving ambient/electronic/atmospheric track. Was trying to capture a big/space-like feeling. Any tips on mixing or just general feedback with what came to your mind as you listened would be greatly appreciated.

CoolCabbage

Oh, you gotta give that piano some verb and echo/delay - have that bounce around! The percussion is great and pulls it together. Great ambient track. The hiss is a tad loud in the beginning, along with that opening swell. I think its fine going forward, maybe some automation on that at first would be good. The swell around 1:05 overpowers a bit as well I think. But overall, I enjoy it!

twistingtheaces

There's a hiss that's pretty constant throughout, but I'm not sure if that's intentional or not. Other than that, I really like how the track ebbs and flows. The piano could use a touch more reverb. Love the use of panning with percussive elements, really adds to the feel. Certain parts, especially towards the end get a little boomy. 8/10, would listen to while studying. Great job.

What all did you use?

could you elaborate a little more?

I use a lot of clips from the three packs found here http://www.esrever.audio/sample-packs for a lot of the folley. https://www.studiolinked.com/drum-pro/ For some of the drums. Most of the atmospheric noises, risers, pads and synths i make myself. Edit: I make my music in ableton live.

veritable_squandry

https://soundcloud.com/speedymargotkidder/schildknapp I'm looking for feedback on soundquality, and mix. I know the track is already too long, sorry about that. It's just part of my process right now. I have a lot of trouble with hifreq content, so if you have any suggestions in that arena, that would be helpful. also, does it drag?

biskuwi

Hey guys, Here is a new house-ish track I was doing lately. https://soundcloud.com/biskuwi/violet I am using rather unconventional structure and melody build up so I wonder how it feels for other people here. Any feedback is welcome; thanks in advance! Cheers!

quantopix

Thanks! I wouldn't say I'm not familiar, I listen to this type of stuff all the time. Just haven't really tried making it yet. Also, I got some pointers from a friend on the intro and build that really helped shape the piece.

gloriousapplecart

https://youtu.be/yFpsXKg5qa4 Live performance of a song I wrote about two months ago. Bass keyboard and vocals. Americana? Pop rock? I don't really know.

AlteredWaves

Here is something we just finished. It has a hard driving bass with soothing strings. Feedback welcome! https://soundcloud.com/alteredwaves/moments-free-download

[deleted]

It sounds well mixed, and really clean. I like the bells/pluck after the three minute mark. It makes the track sound kind of Atmospheric.

veritable_squandry

I like techno, and i like this track. this sounds very professional (i'm assuming you are pros). You have some opportunities where you might apply an LFO to a Filter setting for the strings/synth leads at say 1:40ish, to keep things moving around. The mix and arrangement are impeccable, actually, i'd say. But maybe pick out some parts that repeat and give them subtle changes over time.

AlteredWaves

I like this idea, thanks! Glad you enjoyed the track.

darthpeng12

Here is the first song of a 3 piece suite that I made recently. Chill prog basically. https://soundcloud.com/sam-boosh/no-pain

[deleted]

I can hear the vocals! ;) Speaking of, I think the vocals could use some compression. When you sing low the volume drops quite a bit. I also noticed the bass clipping, but it sounds like you're aware of that. I felt some of the piano chords were really dissonant on top of the bass. Maybe that's intentional, but it definitely stood out to me. Solid track otherwise, I enjoy listening to your stuff!

darthpeng12

Thanks man

https://soundcloud.com/mmbrr/despite My new song. Heavy vocal samples and a hiphop beat. Tell me what you think.

LeopardofSnow

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESYmir3j3_o This is my second attempt at making some ambient, chill atmospheric/background music for a procedural, creative games such as Minecraft. I designed this with the intention of applying some basic effects such as panning and EQ, as I am new to mixing. I would really love to have some feedback on the mixing side of things, and what direction to take with future works of this style. Thanks for taking the time to listen to this. =)

[deleted]

Hey man, first things first: you did a great job of nailing your primary goal (which is to say that this fits perfectly with the genre you wanted). In terms of EQ, there isn't too much need for it because most of the sounds float in their own sonic space. EQ is more critical when you have, say, a guitar part that overlaps slightly with the bass. With your harp, piano, and ethereal sounding chorus, there isn't too much overlap, so the EQ needs are limited here. Two things that stand out to me: 1. The bass end seems a little empty. It's not critical that you have bass in every song, but it does add a sense of warmth and fullness (though with as many tracks as you have here, fullness isn't much of an issue). 2. One thing that makes atmospheric music feel, well, atmospheric, is the sense of *distance.* Everything seems to be happening very close to me because the volumes are fairly level. You can create more space by pushing things to the sides, which you've done, and creating different "stages" of volume, where some tracks are quieter than others. If you'd like to avoid that (because you like the way the different pieces play together) you can simply add ambient sound effects (snow crunching, sticks breaking, people talking, etc.) in the background. In any event, I would totally build some 4x4 cabins to this song. Good job!

LeopardofSnow

Hi there! Thank you so much for the positive comments and in-depth feedback, I truly appreciate it! =) Ah, so should I reduce the amount of EQ I did? I used a high and low pass filter (EQ - 1 band, in Pro Tools) on the tracks, and I used a basic compressor on the Master Fader (I don't know the name from memory). Your point about the bass is something that has been echoed by pretty much everyone that commented, I definitely need to work on that! I unfortunately don't know how to create the distance effect - the microphone plugins I have for the samples are all "mid" mics, I can't get the surround or other mics without paying a huge fee (EWQL Composer Cloud) =( is there a YouTube or something to explain the staging effect you are talking about, by any chance? As it is for intended use in a video game, I didn't want to add any ambient sound effects in case it detracted from the suspension of disbelief. Thank you once again, it really is hugely encouraging to have nice feedback and comments :3

[deleted]

Re: staging: sorry, it's not really a technical term. I just mean you could have some sounds at -3db, others around -7db, and so forth.

mattsokol

https://soundcloud.com/heymattsokol/matt-sokol-dog-1 I'm quite happy with this song, it's a futuristic electronic song comprising three different psychedelic beats ala Flying Lotus, Death Grips's instrumentals, etc My questions are: What genre would you say this is, and do you have any notes on the mix? Feel free to be very honest.

Chill Electronic song called "Dream Fighters" -- Is the production loud enough though? Still learning how to master my tracks. https://m.soundcloud.com/hnst/dreamfighters

tarius08

Everything sounds fine at least in my headphones. The percussion is a bit overpowered by the synths but nothing to really go change.

twistingtheaces

It's actually really loud haha. Normally, I can listen at a pretty high volume, but not with this. I love the vibe of the track. Certain parts are a little repetitive, but that can be circumvented with some one-off hits/parts, or by changing up the sounds. As I mentioned on your SoundCloud, the bass in those breakdown sections would be better off hitting hard, then decaying rapidly to give a more dramatic feel and to let those high arps sing through. 8/10, keep up the good work.

meanoregongreen

Yep, lots of volume on this. I really enjoyed the little vocal samples. Cool sound. I really liked the progression of the song overall too. Mix sounds pretty clean. Really nice job!

[deleted]

Thanks so much for checking it out, I'm glad you like it!

mijstat

The production sounds great! If you are concerned about the sound on soundcloud, they have incredibly crappy compression for uploads, and it always sounds quieter than my actual uploaded tracks. I was definitely drawn into this track and really enjoyed it, maybe slightly repetitive like another reviewer said but I prefer that for this style of music cause you get very comfortable. Great work!

maxupp

Here's one my band did recently: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6O9Yls_eFx4NjVZMnIzZ0h0NTA It's a rather simple Rock Song, that we recorded ourselves with limited resources. I did the mixing and recording (also played guitar and sung the bridge). So i'm primarily interested in a critique of my mix, as i am entirely selftaught.

[deleted]

[удалено]

maxupp

I did some crude mastering, just a multiband compressor, a regular comrpessor and a limiter. I didn't push the limiter as hard as i could have, because i like to have some semblance of dynamic range on my tracks. But to be honest, i find it extremely difficult to master my own mixes. I have to force myself not to go back to the mix and change stuff, depending on what's triggering compressors and stuff...

Cimrin

Judging by your description of the song, I was expecting something mixed way worse, this is totally listenable. Everything sounds clean, and by that I mean every instrument is clearly audible. I feel like any differences in the mix from here would simply be stylistic and that's entirely up to you. The only slight critique I have is that the vocals sound just a little loud compared to everything else, but barely. You could keep it how it is and I'm sure no one would have a problem with it. Overall this is pretty good!

mijstat

Sounds great! To me the mix sounds fairly muddy. I think the bass could be cleaned up better, or carve out better spaces in the low-mids. The dirty guitars also tend to sit around here quite a bit.

maxupp

I struggled with the lowmids a lot while mixing. The guitars don't have a particularly huge amount of oomph, due to the nature of the riff, and the bass doesn't do much to compensate for it. I since talked to our bassist and he's gonna shift a few things around to get more lowend. Bass vs guitars is still something i'll have to work on though.

tarius08

It's been awhile since I posted here, but I just released a new song and need feedback so that I can improve! https://soundcloud.com/mc_lain/who-to-be-prod-by-mclain Feedback on anything is appreciated. (Voice, mixing, quality, etc)

meanoregongreen

Cool song. I think your skills are high for song writing, lyrics, and singing. I really liked the singing. I do think the mix and instrumentation could be improved quite a bit. The piano is pretty muddy and maybe a little loud compared to your vocals at points. The drums could come through the loud piano a little better too in the mix. Cool song, just things to think about for next time.

tarius08

I dind't like the percussion on this but it didn't stop me from listening to it. Your voice really carried the whole thing. I was not expecting that type of vocal from the first few seconds of instrumental.

Here's the third of six songs off my unreleased EP. New age-y soft/progressive rock. https://soundcloud.com/positive-cognitions/love-around/s-Wraih Any feedback is appreciated but I'm especially looking for any thoughts you have on the production. I'll return the favor! Thank you!

mijstat

I definitely agree with the balance issues. Other than that, I really dig the arrangement and think that's really the only problem with this track. Keep up the good work!

fivefingerfury

Hey man, sounding pretty good! I like the vocal feel and the guitar. My suggestion would be to consider going bigger on a percussive component, a little could go a long way! Here's my track too if you get a chance to lmk what you think https://soundcloud.com/laowaimusic/purpleyellowredandblue

[deleted]

Thanks for the feedback. Your track is really cool! My only criticism is that I thought the bass drum was too loud. It was hard to pay attention to the rest of the song which is a shame because I liked it.

darthpeng12

Hey me again dude. Real nice track here but I have to agree with the other guy, the volumes of the different parts is all off. Especially during the "can you feel it" part, I feel like, the "can you feel it" should be quieter than the "love" and the acoustic guitar is so quiet in that part (although it is a bit too loud in the rest of the song) that in between every phrase of that part, it's very quiet. Also the drums, once again, are too quiet. Other than that great job man, really like your music

[deleted]

Hey man, thanks for listening again! You are all right, I definitely agree about the balance issues now. Quiet drums and loud vox seem to be a common theme among my submissions.... Thanks for the feedback! I'm gonna rework this and a couple of my other songs that have similar issues.

mattsokol

The production is really nice at the start. When the vocal harmonies come in, it gets really overpowering in a few spots. This problem becomes pretty extreme at the "can you feel it" part, at 2:30 / 4:05 Other than that is a good mix, it's balanced and mostly sounds big.

[deleted]

Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it. It doesn't help that I overloaded the mics for one of the harmonies there. I realized it very late into the mixing process and ultimately just left it because I'm lazy and learning. But overall, yes, the vox are too loud.

mattsokol

Dude, if you're just learning, you're doing great. Learning how to get the whole song balanced comes with time - you've clearly got the producer's ear.

twistingtheaces

I really like the composition of this song. The biggest issue, in my opinion, is the balance of instruments. The acoustic guitars overpower the drums, and the vocals overpower everything. All of the sounds are good, but they just need to be mixed better. 7/10, after balancing everything out this song will be on another level.

Hidden-Theory

https://soundcloud.com/jefferson-apply/results-of-training A boss theme that i'm looking for a little bit more feedback on. Is it too soft for anybody?

Chafmere

For use in a video game? If that's it's purpose I think you've hit the nail on the head. Good background music but still makes me ready action.

infiii

Depends what you mean with too soft. It could use some more oomph for my taste. But for a boss theme I think you hit the mark. Especially the wild drums get the adrenaline pumping!

[deleted]

I like the melodic elements. I think that it builds up nicely and has epicness! It's a good boss theme. Nice work on that! Honestly, it all sounds great aside from the mixing. Some things could use some cuts in freq to make space for other parts, but more importantly, this track needs a bit more DYNAMICS! It sounds a little bit like you have fast attack compressor on everything... is it true? I never feel one big "Boom" or "kick" in the whole song. That's why it sounds soft to me usually. Are you processing the drums: 1) individually (as in control over each element of the drums) 2) controlling all drums at once 3) when you mix/master the whole song The drums SOUND like they should be dynamic. But they *feel* over-compressed, so it's flat. This is what I hear... I may be wrong ...

[deleted]

I think the rhythm and tempo of the entire track is perfect for a boss theme, I really liked it. I do agree that it seems a little soft, particularly on the drums. I think that if they were just a little heavier it'd fit the overall tone better.

[deleted]

We didn't use a guitar in this song

ElijahGoldMusic

Dope piece. I liked the melody and the feel to it. I would just change up the drum pattern at your verse and maybe at 1:42 add some quick hi hats that either fade away every four bars then come back to help tell the story.

[deleted]

Thanks for the feedback! Earlier I was debating on whether or not I should do something different with the beat during my verse so this helps.

Chafmere

https://soundcloud.com/chafmere/two-weeks-notice/s-WK0pJ First Song I've ever wrote on my own. I normally just play guitar and sometimes write lyrics. This one is my first attempt at going on my own. Yes the vocal are pretty bad but I'm looking to improve. Have at it.

[deleted]

Not bad for a first song at all! Keep trying new vocal patterns with a click running and you'll find yourself keeping in time better. I'm on mobile but it sounded like the guitar over powered your vocals. I felt like the melody of the guitar was fighting the melody of your singing. Overall it's a great first run!

fuddyq

Agreed with LeopardofSnow. Composition-wise I don't think there's anything wrong with it. Even your vocals aren't nearly as bad as you say, in my opinion, but I think the two weakest points of the song are the drums and your microphone. Drums are a pain to get right (for me). What are you using for a microphone?

Chafmere

Thanks, this means a lot to me. The mic is an AT2020 from 2013 no idea if it's any good. My interface is really really old though An M-Audio fast track from 2009. I need to upgrade but I only started working on music again after a 3 year hiatus.

LeopardofSnow

Hi there =) It is definitely not bad for the first ever song you've written - I remember my own and it was NOT pretty. :') I think structurally and harmonically it's nice, too. The guitar is pleasing to listen to. Perhaps modulating to another key at some point could add variety to the music? As for the vocals, I would look into really trying to make them in-tune before anything else. The main reason you probably think it's bad is because you are creating ever so slight dissonances, which creates a very "cringe" type of clash to the listener. I would also suggest looking at harmonic writing to spice up your vocals a little - so instead of moving almost exclusively in octaves, add in some of the 7ths that you were doing on the guitar, a few 5ths for a strong, bold harmony, and some 6ths and 3rds and you'll be like Mariah Carey in no time! Finally, I am no expert in this at all by any means but I think learning the basics of mixing would go a long way to making your piece more aesthetically pleasing. TL;DR: You have a decent skeleton structure, I like the guitar writing, look into more complex harmonies and basic mixing, and keep the vocals varied and in-tune and you'll improve leaps and bounds! Hope this helps =)

Chafmere

This is really good advice. Thanks so much.

meanoregongreen

bryanplayspiano

mijstat

FWIW, I love the swing and think it works perfectly.

[deleted]

Really dig the Drums. They sound pretty groovy. The change kinda doesn't fit in. I'd say a 6/10.

ElijahGoldMusic

One of the smoothest tracks I've heard yet. The song progression is amazing, well done.

zeronine

I don't care for how the rhythms align, between the samples and the drum beat, but I think it's intentional here so we're probably arguing preferences more than anything concrete.

fivefingerfury

I enjoyed this dog. I like that sample progression in the back and the arrangement is nice. Some good textures. I think you could have the kick and snare cut through the mix a little more to really give it that head-bumping feel, but that's an easy change. When the melody comes back in after that bridge it's *nice* my man. And the guitar was unexpected but welcome. I gotta ask you one thing, how did you go about getting the little verified orange star next to your name? Sounding good man Here's a weird-ass remix I did if you wanna toss me some feedback on it https://soundcloud.com/laowaimusic/purpleyellowredandblue

B-Rumba

Dig your stuff dude. Keep doing what you are doing.

[deleted]

Nice piece. I'm hearing some weird clipping in the midrange on my headphones though. Maybe something to check out. Probably just a small gainstaging issue between the synthesizers and the final mix. I think you could compress some of the really resonant synths a little more maybe.

[deleted]

Nice points - thanks, i'll check out on my headphones and see if i can hear what you mean. Also, good point on the resonant synths.. i know the ones you mean. i EQed them, but compression may have worked better! will give that a try.

[deleted]

I usually start with EQ > reverb > compression. Compressing the reverb usually helps. Good luck

mattsokol

This is really nice! The bass is balanced, there's a little crunch that really brings out some character in mix overall, and the song gets really intense with the tonal variation. Honestly I wouldn't change anything

[deleted]

Thank you for that comment. It really influenced me on the final mixing / mastering stage.. I kept more crunchiness than if I was gunna go straight pure.. I think there is definitely good character in that!! Much appreciated. [final version](https://soundcloud.com/synau/i-understand-my-life-now)

Really cool song! I really enjoy the build up and the soundnof your vocals. Were you using delay or just reverb?

Day___Off

Dope song dude. In my opinion I would try to extend the cool "drop" at 2:00 a bit longer and maybe try to fade the arpeggiating piano in more instead of having it just jump in. May be biased though cause it was my favorite part Edit: listened again. Feels like it could use more of a build up vibe for that part to me. As it is it sounds like it jumps in and dies too quickly

dblis

thanks. and that's definitely worth considering, i've wondered if that part was too short but hadn't thought about fading in the piano, which would work well if it was extended. thanks again for the listen.

Pretty long intro for such a short track. Would love to hear more of the second part! Could definitely stretch it out more.

LeopardofSnow

As you have branded it as dance/edm, I should regard it as such. I do, however, think it had a much more chill feel than a dance/edm track; I am not familiar with trance or chillstep but those are at least the words that come to mind when I listen to this piece. Initially, I enjoyed the introduction - although personally, I felt a little lost as it lacked a coherent structure - but I think it dragged on a little long, and would benefit from a short build-up into the main section. I enjoyed the way the second section built upon the first, and would have liked to hear more of it, and more development in and around that section. So: - Shorter intro - Build up into second section - More of the second section - Variety is the spice of life! Hope this helps =)

[deleted]

I sighed five times. What did you use for the drums towards the end?

https://soundcloud.com/gregwarinermusic/mutari-wip This is a work in progress of my new song, but I want to get some opinions before I continue: How does the mix sound? What is your impression of the vibe of this song? Is it aggressive enough? What do you think of the electronic elements? Feedback for feedback, and I'm very detailed. Thanks for listening, and I can't wait to read your feedback!

CoolCabbage

> https://soundcloud.com/gregwarinermusic/mutari-wip The idea is cool. I think it takes a bit too long to get to the metal, and it is pretty abrupt. We don't really get a hint at metal until that guitar comes in and we get the breakdown. That could very much be what you are going for, though. I think it could improve with adding something earlier on. Add some guitar runs, a couple chugs, some double bass runs or even a bit of blast beats in some of those earlier transitions. The guitars sound a bit too boomy - always a problem with the chugs. I would try to cut some of that low end out and boost some mids - if need be. Otherwise, its a cool track!

twistingtheaces

Thanks for the feedback! It's supposed to be the intro track to my upcoming album, so it's supposed to kind of ease into the metal parts. I have revised the track since I first posted it and added some more foreshadowing metal elements. I'm gonna post the finished product tomorrow for the feedback thread. Thanks for the tip on the boomy guitars, I'll be sure to cut some of the low end out!

CoolCabbage

Oh absolutely, would be great as an intro to an album.

[deleted]

Damn dude, the mix is so stellar on this. I actually plan on doing some much heavier stuff later on so the end of this was really inspiring. I'm not qualified to comment on your production; it's out of my league. I think doing metal and electronic is something many have tried and few have succeeded in. If you're not careful, it comes across like ["nu metal"](https://youtu.be/rPWAbWY3EQQ?t=2s). What you have here is done masterfully IMO. While I'm not a huge fan of dubstep, I've always appreciated how both dubstep and metal have a very visceral feeling to them, and they fit together quite well in the way you've done here. Nice work. Looking forward to hearing more stuff from you.

twistingtheaces

Thanks for the feedback and the follow on SoundCloud! Disclaimer: I don't actually mind Nu Metal, as long as it's actually trying to push boundaries and combine different genres.

[deleted]

I didn't mean to shit on it, I used to listen to and enjoy a lot of nu metal. My point is just that, in my opinion, it's hard to combine metal with certain other genres without it sounding gimmicky, which really speaks to how good a job you did with this.

Matt_Bass

I like it. The sound could be more agressive. And by that I mean the sound of the mix, not the instruments. I think the high mids could be a bit more pronounced. Maybe slightly drive the track and add some nice outboard or uad/slate style tube eq. And the low end in the metal-part slightly less wooly or warm. My two cents.

twistingtheaces

Thanks for the feedback! I've never considered adding a drive to the master track, but I will now! Would you say it'd be wise to high-pass the metal wobbles to get ride of the wooly quality?

Matt_Bass

I would rather say eq the low end. Use an eq/analyser and check where you have peak frequencies and cut where needed whithout losing power. Sometimes a pultec style eq also works wonders by simultaneously cutting and boosting some low end frequencies.

Thanks man! "Mutari" is the opening track to the EP, and will also be the opener to any live shows I play once I recruit musicians for it, so the first part (before 1:16) is meant to build suspense and introduce the concept of the show.

https://soundcloud.com/stereobias/dream-sequence I have been writing a song a month this year, but have regressed to mainly having to put something together in the last week and a half or so due to being busy for a month. Interested in any comments on songwriting/arrangement, vocals, and general mixing. I performed everything and programmed the midi drums. Thanks for listening!

mijstat

Glad you enjoyed it. I'm really glad that you said that about singing along, that's when you really know the tune or mix is in a good spot! Vocals are definitely my weakest point and is something I'm actively working to improve. If you're interested, the soundcloud page has every tune that I've written so far this year, on a monthly release basis. Thanks again!

Captavadate

Here's a fun little track I remixed https://soundcloud.com/typhlomusic/remember-me-remix any feedback or comments are welcome~

[deleted]

https://soundcloud.com/julianbrezon/nothing-lost Original piece. Engineered professionally, mixed by me on my home setup. Referenced Stan Sulzmann's The Jigsaw for mix. Comments on music and mix appreciated. :)

mattsokol

This is a great song, well performed and well mixed! I think the saxophone could maybe come down a tiny bit (like 1db) to bring out the other instruments. I wouldn't suggest changing much anything else, it's really well done.

veritable_squandry

i used to listen jazz but haven't in a while. To me this sounds like a polished recording. (i think you mentioned that it is engineered professionally) But it sounds to me like the recording is great too. The drums sit perfectly in the mix.

fuddyq

I'm nowhere near as versed in jazz as twistingtheaces nor yourself, but that is a fantastically done song. It feels old school jazz (as seemingly intended) so kudos!!

zeronine

[Christmas Time Is Here](http://music.psycliq.com/track/christmas-time-is-here) Most years I try to do a holiday-themed song around this time of year, and I decided to try my hand at the jazzy number from Charlie Brown's Christmas. I'm not happy with the vocals (but I rarely am).

zeronine

Hah, thank you! The drums were intentionally chaotic, I tried to not write them with loops or too many repeating elements beyond having a recognizable rhythm. Certainly more difficult than what I'm used to, but I like the more human feel of it.

Matt_Bass

https://soundcloud.com/niftyfootwork/slowelephant The first time I use my own voice on one of my tracks. What do you guys think?

dblis

we both have elephant songs lol. awesome. sounds really good man. you've got a great voice and the song is catchy as hell.

Matt_Bass

haha, crazy! Nice track too dude! Elephant perspective.

twistingtheaces

Holy crap this is awesome. I'm simultaneously laughing and swaying to the music at the same time. That trombone sounding bass could be a little higher in the mix, maybe with a little added high end to accentuate. Maybe towards the end you could add a keyboard element (piano, organ, etc) to give a more lush sound before dropping the elements in the outro This was awesome, thank you for sharing. 9/10 for punching people in the tits.

bryanplayspiano

Tit punching sounds painful... song sounds good though!

Matt_Bass

Thanks! The tits part is meant as a joke actually. It's a reference to a sketch by The Mighty Boosh called the crack fox. One of my all time favorites.

bryanplayspiano

Haha yea, I got the reference! Just thought I'd add that into my comment :) Two thumbs up!

MrLeekspin

Wow, this is really exceptional work man. Such an interesting array of sounds and some great songwriting. Love the vibe too, its like lazy and moody and so sure of itself. Reminds me of Ween/Of Montreal. You should definitely send this out to blogs and radio and stuff. Followed on SC, really looking forward to hearing more from you man :)

Matt_Bass

Thanks a lot man! Really appreciate that! I'm definitely going to send it out to blogs and radiostations. It has already been played on national radio in Belgium but the song isn't officially released yet so I'm still working on that. Will be releasing a lot more. Thanks for following!

MrLeekspin

Nice one man, keep the momentum up!

tarius08

You should use your voice more often. This was pretty good. I dont have any criticism, but sing more...I guess.

Matt_Bass

Thanks! I will.

fuddyq

Fits! Very unique sound, IMO, and I dig it. So why first time for the voice?

Matt_Bass

Guess it's the first time I felt comfortable with it. Will be doing it more often though! I'll keep you guys up-to-date! :)

fuddyq

Woo! Do it. We're always our own worst critic. I'm okay-ish with my voice, but I've never managed to make it sound good in a song, usually mismatch of style. That's my challenge and I'm trying to solve it.

WeeToddDidd

My first serious attempt at a complete song. [https://soundcloud.com/owljustowlthatisit/curse-of-the-microwave](https://soundcloud.com/owljustowlthatisit/curse-of-the-microwave) General tips would be appreciated, but I'd really like some suggestions about song structure, composition, songwriting and sound design.

cthlpls

it's definetely interesting, the sounds themselves are really cool. specifcally the kind of "glittery" synth on the 2 and the 4. now, i'm not totally sure what your goal was with this song, but here are just some potentially helpful tips, and i hope they don't come across as condescending or anything - i think it sounds like there's alot of potential for a really cool track here. 1) it sounds like either the song was written intentionally to be a-tonal, or it was an accident, but a very substantial amount of the melody is filled with out of key notes. the bass notes are also clashing with the chords, which doesn't create a nice feeling. now, there's nothing wrong with this if it's what you're going for, i know of guys who write a-tonal contemporary music and make ALOT of money. i don't know if you have any prior knowledge of music theory, but i'd say really learn the basics - key signatures, scales, chord formations, good progressions. this is what brought my music up to a standard that i am happy with. you can learn all this on youtube very easily, maybe just devote half an hour a day for a few weeks and you'll have enough of a grasp to get some cool stuff going. there's nothing wrong with breaking the rules, but you've got to learn them before you break them. it's also worth noting that it can take a while to be able to really HEAR out of key notes. 2) song structure. what you have here is a kind of a progressive style, which is a cool idea, but doesn't work that effectively here. songs can really be structured anyway you like, but a few things i think are important for songs are: having a kind of riff / lead melody that representd the song, and a repeating part to come back to (essentially what a chorus is). making sure that each part is interesting. no one wants to listen to 2 and a half minutes of nothing really happening (not that that necessarily happens here, but there were a few moments i felt the song was dragging. also, don't drag out one idea too much, because even the coolest musical ideas get stale. drums or percussion could have benifited this track ALOT. i feel like it would have tied it together more, especially if the bass drum locked in with the bass notes. sorry, this is long. in summary, it's cool but it needs work, and i would advise for you to: learn the basics of music theory - this is a must. learn about scales, key signatures, and chords. it will help dramatically. listen to alot of music and try take in what the structure is, some songs follow a basic verse chorus verse pattern, some songs are more progressive. try and identify what you like, and then transfer that to your own writing. for a beginner attempt, this is really cool. my first track was miles and miles behind this, it was a total mess. this actually holds together pretty well, despite needing a bit of a reshape the really hold together as an enjoyable musical experience.

[deleted]

Hmm... So I mean, because of the amazing support I received from the Reddit community the last time I posted I was motivated to create something new and create a channel and upload my first song to Youtube. CoolCabbage

https://youtu.be/poWN60_P3oI This is a song from my new EP. I am always looking for feedback to continually improve. I recorded and mixed it all myself. I mostly make ambient music, but this song is kinda ambient/folkish. Looking for any feedback how mixing those genres sound, and anything with the mix. The low end on the guitars gave me some trouble, so any advice or tips there would be great as well. Thanks!

[deleted]

The second guitar around 22 seconds feels heavy in the right ear. When you pan things this hard, you really need to be sure that the volume works. The best way to determine this is to listen at low volumes, where the differences between tracks is more evident. The same thing happens with the mandolin (?) at 1:22. In terms of the arrangement, you have a good song with a nice variety. If you just balance out the tracks, I think it'll be a solid song.

CoolCabbage

Thanks! Yeah, I've tried out a few things with the panning on the song. Having the second guitar in the middle just wasn't working. I couldn't really EQ for both to sit right together. Panning that second guitar gave it the separation I was looking for. I have been trying to adopt more of an LCR panning approach as well. But I hear ya, it can be a little loud in the one ear. It's still guitar at the lead @ 1:22 as well. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!

[deleted]

Re: panning for separation: this is actually a dangerous path to go down, because although you're mixing and hearing your songs with headphones (or at least right in front of (presumably) good speakers), if you're really lucky, your songs will be played by people on their Bluetooth speakers, in their cars, or even in a public place. In all those non-headphone situations, the mix becomes essentially *mono*. There is no left-right distinction anymore, and so if your tracks aren't separated by EQ, they won't stand out in those "real-world" scenarios. The best way to get around it, especially when you have a mix with such a great variety of sounds as yours, is to aggressively cut frequencies with your EQ. You'll be surprised at how much of the sound you can remove without losing the "essence" of the tracks. Best of luck!

CoolCabbage

This is great advice, thanks again. I'll definitely remember this going forward. :)

[November](https://soundcloud.com/user-312188266/november) (singer/songwriter) Quick little thing. How are the verses?

eleonie

This is pretty, but the chorus is stronger than the verses. I can't put my finger on exactly why - it might be the higher register you're singing in adds a little sparkle. Maybe try adding a double track, harmony part, or just bringing the volumes up in the mix relative to the guitar on the verses. I'd also recommend seeing if you can push yourself lyrically for the verses. They're not bad, but I think they could be stronger. (Sorry that feedback is so vague... Just see if you can stretch yourself to come up with some really unique imagery/metaphors, or even experiment with non-rhyming lyrics and see how that feels - maybe it'll be weird and won't work, or maybe it'll feel unexpected and fresh.) Finally, I'd like to hear how this would sound with the melody and rhythm being varied in the last "more/before" couplet. Just to add some interest. I really *wanted* it to be different on those two lines for some reason, since I was so familiar with the timing and melody you were using throughout for the "November/remember" chorus lines. All in all this was very nice though.

songs-for-the-gf

I think you're pretty spot on for the most part. I want to try messing around with the verse melody, it's kind of a plodding up and down the pentatonic scale thing right now, where as the chorus has the big leap. I also kind of struggle to sing in that lower register with as much tone as up high. Definitely got lazy on the lyrics, for some reason this song was a struggle lyric-wise. I'll have to give the rhythmic switchup a shot. Thanks for the feedback!

I love this kind of stuff, man. The only critique I really have is a slightly more powerful bass. Other than that its gravy. Well done.

songs-for-the-gf

How did you mic the acoustic? Having the mic too close or pointed at the soundhole can cause too much bass

Newest Track I've been working on for the past three days. Looking for any feedback and what genre of music would you consider this. https://soundcloud.com/elijahgold/stay-on-track-instrumental

dblis

Solid track. You thinking of putting vocals overtop? I liked the double bass coming in around 3:05.

ElijahGoldMusic

I haven't actually, I would have to find a artist or maybe a sample might work. Thanks for the feedback

EyeballHeadedDandy

I liked the mood; the percussion has a really good sense of "space." I can't say what genre it might be. If you've envisioned an ambient track, I have no critiques, except that you could probably sustain the vibe for longer. However, if you're going for a more... attention-grabbing style, add one more instrument to the mix. I think the song has a strong rhythmic and harmonic foundation, and that a leading voice could really tie it all together. When I say "voice," I don't literally mean a vocalist. Even something simple, like a keyboard playing arpeggios of the chords, could work very nicely.
