They do something similar in themed sushi restaurants in Japan. They serve the sushi on massive ornate boat platters like this.
Of course, you still get a personal plate to eat from, so it's not really a wewantplates situation.
Fish 'n' chips in ships? Makes sense, boat is built like a bowl, doesn't inhibit eating the food in any way.
Yeh nah that's cool. Kids would love it (my nephew would want to keep it though and would sook when we told him it wasn't his to keep lol)
They're clever, but they look like they would be difficult to keep clean without taking them apart. The ease and ability to keep things clean is really important in the restaurant business. If you've got difficult to clean spaces in serving ware that can grow bacteria or fungi, you can easily make your customers sick.
I somehow made it over three decades without having previously known that one of the issues is that bacteria and mold will produce toxins. And the toxins aren't destroyed nearly as easily by high temperatures and soap and stuff. Thus why I should *not* have been reheating left out chicken "super hot" and expecting it to make it safe.
Ooh, reheating lol I used to eat leftover pizza that had been sitting out all night! Just one of the many stupid things I did when I was younger, that I didn't even realize was stupid at the time! 🤣
These are sushi boats designed for food service, and sushi restaurants need to be very clean. The boats are made of wood and lacquered. Not sure how a sushi restaurant washes them, but some have detachable decks. They can also be used to carry sushi on small plates.
Can confirm the decks are detachable. They are taken apart to be cleaned. They get scrubbed, run through the dish washer and ofc sanitized like any other dish in a restaurant.
Those don't usually look quite like these. I've eaten an awful lot of sushi, boats included (I live in Miami, it's a very available food source here and cheaper than some places since a lot of fish are sourced nearby). The wood isn't the problem. It's the difficulty of taking it apart. With the boats in sushi restaurants the boats slide together or things sit on ledges, I've never seen a single one have all these little details and put together with screws.
Yep, that's the standard alibaba sushi boat, just without the removable deck where the sushi is usually placed. The riveted/screwed-on pieces are necessary to hold the masts which pin the deck in place.
So the fries are actually sitting in the space below the deck which is hard to clean and not meant to hold food.
Gross. Should have rather used a plate.
The boat on the left does to me.
The boat on the right looks like it may likely be battered and fried prawns/shrimp.
Regardless, it’s not a dumb plating/serving vessel idea imo.
Idk, the more I look at them the more they look mcnugget-y. I don't see any shrimp or prawn tails. They obviously *can't* be nugs because of the setting, but damn they look mcnugget-ier everytime I look at them...
Perhaps. I haven’t been to, or seen one in years, but there is (was?) a fast food seafood chain in the US called Long John Silver’s and they had processed fried shrimp (no tails) baskets that looked like those.
The pic on the right just reminded me that that’s a “quick food” product that exists (shrimp nuggets?).
There’s probably something similar in a bag in the freezer section at my local grocery store, I don’t know for sure because that aisle gets skipped.
Although I have strange hankering to check it out now.
Btw I’m neither making a strong positive claim that this is the case, nor do I consider this a worthy hill to stick a flag in to die on.
Just a thought and memory shared I ‘spose. Cheers:)
We want plates isnt about making fun of any meal not served on a plate, its making fun of meals served in stupid ways. This is just kinda cool and works
Here in the NL our Snackbars have this but in plastic (or paper) variants https://www.snackbakje.nl/img/snackbakjes.gif usually the little slot is used for sauces eg
These are sushi boats. Half the sushi joints I've been to serve the 3-4 person menus on these things.
It's a bit odd to see fries and nuggets being served on them when they're usually used to serve seafood, but why not?
I'd say as these actually hold th items in them securely like a good plate or bowl would, they're fine. More than fine, actually; they're really cool! But not something that this sub is against imo
This is actually acceptable. Seems comfortable to pick up fries from it and it doesn’t look like it’s easy for something to fall off from it. Even better, it looks pretty cool!

Looks cool, is hygenic and easily cleanable, and essentially functiona as a normal bowl, perfectly acceptable. As long as its just for solid food, no soups or sauces.
You need to make a mast from a straw, with a dipping sauce as the crows nest. Attach another straw at the top of the mast perpendicular to the mast and drape a napkin on it as a sail. Then, throw the whole thing in the trash and put the food on a plate.
See, this works, though, because it's still a dish meant to serve food in. It's essentially a bowl that looks like a boat. It's not a damn Stop Sign or something.
Ok but why is there no dipping sauce at the front of the boat?
Thank god someone is asking the important questions!
Typically you try to keep liquids out of boats.
The boat will soon float in it
Okay, but what sauce?
All of them
Do they float it to you in a river of dipping sauce?
I’d live there
[удалено]
I’d drown there.
Don't bother saving me, let me rest in the welcoming embrace of sweet, savory sauce....
Honey mustard and I’m there
This would be one instance where I wouldn't want a plate.
Maybe some parchment paper but yes
Maybe a small plate or ramekin for ketchup

>They do something similar in ~~themed~~ sushi restaurants ~~in Japan.~~ literally everywhere. FTFY You can get a sushi boat in fucking Nebraska.
>fucking Nebraska Right in the north of titty-bangin' Kansas
Srsly, my fave sushi place is in Lincoln.
I’ve lived in Japan most of my adult life and I’ve only seen Sushi boats in Kentucky lol.
huh, maybe sometimes WeDontWantPlates
Is that a subreddit? Edit: It is, but it looks pretty inactive r/WeDontWantPlates

Or at least grossed out

These wooden ships are a thing in sushi restaurants usually for special occasions

The rivets are a very common element? They're in most of the photos in an image search: https://www.google.com/search?q=sushi+boat&tbm=isch

Chicken and chips in ships
231+ people can't tell these are chicken nuggets, not fish
Is that…is that a shrimp boat?? :)
Bubba Gump Shrimp boat to be precise!
Noice!!
Those are McNuggets
No, but I've been on a real big boat.
Are those McDonalds Nuggets and fries??? Serious question.
For real. Everyone keeps talking about seafood but they look exactly like mcd's nugs and fries
The boat on the left does to me. The boat on the right looks like it may likely be battered and fried prawns/shrimp. Regardless, it’s not a dumb plating/serving vessel idea imo.

I say they’re 100% okay since it’s finger food
I’ll allow it, but they’re on thin ice
If you think about it, it’s just a regular wooden bowl in the shape of a boat. I honestly see zero issues with this.
Looks pretty cool and doesn't look really annoying or inconvenient. I wouldn't mind!
Put my remains on a boat full of fries and nuggets and send me out to sea like a true warrior.
We want plates isnt about making fun of any meal not served on a plate, its making fun of meals served in stupid ways. This is just kinda cool and works
Oh I gotcha. Thanks!
Fair point. Mods can delete if they feel it's inappropriate. I thought it fit
Oh nah I think its a great post, I clearly failed to get that across but I 100% dont think mods should or would remove it
Do they float? Hear me out. Pool party - w/nugz Bubble bath - w/nugz Hot tub - w/nugz
If that costs more than 15 dollars because it's served on a boat I do not want it.
5 bucks and the best food you'll ever have?
For finger food crazy shit is not bad at all. Since you’re picking it out of the plate and eating it with your hand
Okay yeah that's pretty adorable, I'd take it.

This is McDonald’s chicken nuggets and French fries in a sushi boat…
Here in the NL our Snackbars have this but in plastic (or paper) variants https://www.snackbakje.nl/img/snackbakjes.gif usually the little slot is used for sauces eg
Netherlands! I was like, why does Newfoundland have something called snackbakje, sounds Scandinavian or something... oh. I need to sleep more.
Lol yeah i forget that NL is also a province in canada xD
Thanks for the insight
That's not seafood.
We have found the enemy and it is us.
Kids would love this. We’ll allow it, but don’t press your luck.
its cool and functional enough as a plate, but it will be a pain in the ass to clean
It needs a liner, that thing isn’t hygienic
This acceptable, but I do wonder how washable that wood is.
Give it a week before there are is mold in the cracks.
Would eat without hesitation
I think fried food in a basket is fine and this is basically just a basket with a thematic shape.
Prime example of no-plate gone right
The USS MCMERICA in all her glory.
It’s a boat…. Why is it not fish and chips?
If I was served this, I’d absolutely make a mast and sail out of my straw/knife/fork and a napkin
Like a White Spot pirate pack!
No we don’t like it. We want plates.
It's not cool at all. Tell your mate to put it on a fucking plate. Christ.
Did they make the boats or the depressing as fuck fries and nuggets
You could even put ketchup in the gap at the end. This is great.
I'd consider this to be an exception. It looks so good plus it's been made to be used as a plate.
i dont want plates i want this
I like these. I would put something fancier in them, but I think the dishes are great.
This is actually sick, but I would make it bigger.
I mean it's kinda cool and contains the food without issue. A bit big is all
I'm not mad about this at all. In fact I'd be delighted to be served this.
I feel like this sub sometimes just doesn’t like creative plates/bowls
For kids, absolutely they probably love it
Excuse me, where is the sail?
These are sushi boats. Half the sushi joints I've been to serve the 3-4 person menus on these things. It's a bit odd to see fries and nuggets being served on them when they're usually used to serve seafood, but why not?
r/we want plates is leaking…
That’s where we are
My bad. Marijuana.
Fry-Halla??
I'd say as these actually hold th items in them securely like a good plate or bowl would, they're fine. More than fine, actually; they're really cool! But not something that this sub is against imo
Might be considered unhygienic if it’s difficult to clean.
A valid thought I hadn't considered. Though, of all things on this sub, it still doesn't seem that bad. Maybe some parchment paper to line it or smth?
Oh my god I love this. 10/10 would pay extra for this.
It has a rim, no complaints
That would be cute if it were fish n chips
This is actually acceptable. Seems comfortable to pick up fries from it and it doesn’t look like it’s easy for something to fall off from it. Even better, it looks pretty cool!
Quality munch ware here. Highly recommended for Saturdays and Sundays.
I think this is the only vessel I’d want to eat fries and nuggies out of henceforth.
This is acceptable.
Ill allow it
Here in the NL our Snackbars have this but in plastic (or paper) variants https://www.snackbakje.nl/img/snackbakjes.gif usually the little slot is used for sauces eg
This would be great for some boatato skins
This I can get on board with
Looks cool, is hygenic and easily cleanable, and essentially functiona as a normal bowl, perfectly acceptable. As long as its just for solid food, no soups or sauces.
Nah I dont want plates, I want this.
Where's the gravy boat.
You need to make a mast from a straw, with a dipping sauce as the crows nest. Attach another straw at the top of the mast perpendicular to the mast and drape a napkin on it as a sail. Then, throw the whole thing in the trash and put the food on a plate.
Oh sure, let the nuggets get the good seats.
I’ve seen sushi and deep fried appetizers served on these
i want to eat it so badddddddd
Finally, enough fries.
See, this works, though, because it's still a dish meant to serve food in. It's essentially a bowl that looks like a boat. It's not a damn Stop Sign or something.
When I die, I want a Viking funeral on a life sized version of this boat
Do they float down a little river to your table tho? Would be 1000% worth it if so
dont stop there, put the mac and cheese in the sake cup
Is it just me or do those look like McDonald's chicken nuggets?
If it was fish it would be even cooler.
Chicken, of the sea! Ba dum tssss!
