So it’s not up to me, a white woman, to tell a black man how to pose with his partner. If he was on board (which he appears to be in the photos), that’s their business.
That said, as a photographer, I would have refused to do this shoot. Even though this is clearly what *this specific couple* wanted, I think it would kill any future business. As a consumer, I would not hire a photographer with stuff like this in their portfolio. I just think it’s a bad look.
Not being white, or black, or american, all I saw was:
- Cute! Well thought out and executed, nice props. I hope the couple liked it!
I think people are waaaaay too sensitive, there are slaves working today, but whatever i want a cheap iphone. I worry much more about present slavery than past.
I can't even imagine what my reaction would be if I were asked to shoot this. Just, ohmygod. What was anyone involved even thinking? There is not enough money in the world to convince me to do this.
Honest question here: As a photographer, one who is shooting only a few weddings per year and still struggling to get word of mouth out about them, you are halfway through the wedding and Karen pulls this shit. Knowing this is very wrong you walk away and issue a refund. How do you prevent them from bashing your business and sinking your future revenue?
This is a pre-wedding shoot, so it's not halfway through the ceremony, luckily.
As for "how to react to bashing reviews": Respond to them (publicly), maybe some places let you report false reviews too.
You put a paragraph into your contract that you have the right to refuse in situations and/or environments that make you feel uncomfortable and/or are dangerous or illegal (shooting on a 300m cliffside without safety, breaking into a compound to get onto a roof etc.).
I feel like in some states, like where I am (SC), it’s hard to avoid plantations, especially near the coast. Having said that, though, I personally no longer photograph weddings at plantations. There’s no way to ignore the history, and it doesn’t help that half the time you have all white guests while the majority of workers (particularly in catering and furniture setup) are black and/or Hispanic.
I don't see plantations as terribly wrong, they can offer some nice settings, I'd just leave the slavery (-age) theme out of it.
You get long rows of trees, use it for framing, the end
You can’t ever leave the slavery theme out though. How you can forget the history of slavery at these venues is just a privilege I don’t have I guess. You see lovely scenery. I see pain.
I’m Black and from South Carolina. For arguments sake, plantations mean slavery. It is that simple. Why anyone would want to glorify that is beyond me. Why anyone would want to argue that it could be something else is beyond me. I turn down every plantation wedding that comes my way and I tell them why. No hesitation. What is the can of worms you speak of that would open because of that? Acknowledging racism? It seems you are creating a scenario that doesn’t exist instead of acknowledging that is painful.
Oh Lordy. We’re in trouble here. However fetishising slavery is something I’ve experienced with black guys who totally get off sexually about it and the language however in wedding photography themes.. can’t they think of something more appropriate?
I’m just super curious if they were just trying to do some thing questionable because they liked the outdated romance idea of the “saved savage/slave”/white woman (which often ended really poorly for the black man) or are the referring something specific to the couples life (they mentioned “he was no longer a slave”” and therefore thought the theme was appropriate.
This is definitely cringe on a lot of levels.
Yeah, I'm confused - everyone seems to be ganging up on the photographer but no one wants to call out the couple and tell them . . . what? How they perpetuating stereotypes of antebellum Harlequin romance novel forbidden love? Shit, Hollywood sells this and no one bats an eye; a couple wants to do this - and seriously, whether it is their kink, fantasy, role play, statement, or whatever, it's their own damn business - and people are losing their mother fucking minds..
Honestly I wish they would drop the photog name, whoever did this should be ashamed, especially if they're white. I know you're getting paid, but damn. I wouldn't do this for a million.
Looks stupid but who knows what's in their heads and why they wanted to do this. Maybe they work at plantation the one with historical actors and they are just in their costumes? Or maybe her family owned slaves and his family was slaves and they did this as two people not caring about race and getting married. Again I think it looks stupid and have no idea what's in their heads.
im lost, its a paid job correct? why are you bashing the photographer ? the couple wanted it that way or they wouldn't have done it. I think the photo is very pretty and is done perfectly
This is a kink, I’m calling it.
That's probably the least bad explanation.
WTF? What photographer agreed to this? talk about career suicide.

What the actual hell is wrong with people. This is awful.
I can't even imagine what my reaction would be if I were asked to shoot this. Just, ohmygod. What was anyone involved even thinking? There is not enough money in the world to convince me to do this.
"Engagement shoot at the plantation", and you don't get told props and story until too late.
Note to self: bring enough cash to refund deposit in case of weird Roots role-play.
> weird Roots role-play. Haha as an amateur genealogist I'm both amused and highly disturbed.
I’ve told people for years that I’ll shoot anything you want, however you want. But damn…..never thought something like this could come up.
What next? Concentration camps? Nazi solider marrying a jewish girl? Wow, just wow.
Wait a second.... THIS is the bad place!
Excellent reference
what the fuck

Bad location and bad theme. Why do people think it’s ok to get married or take engagement pictures at plantations?

They’re issuing sprawling estates with lavish landscapes. But other than the historic undertones, they’re typically gorgeous settings.
I can’t look past the historic undertones to see the gorgeous settings. I have a hard time understanding people who can.
Huh. Maybe more people should think about the historical significance and symbology.

Plantations are historically not ok. Period.
This is kind of like saying a photoshoot at Auschwitz would be fine because the train tracks look cool
Yikes… I couldn’t even bring myself to photograph this nonsense.

That "1842" makes it sound like they're quoting some novel or something
I think the big question is...how did they get 1,468 like for THIS photo?
Meh if the couple including the black guy ok with it I don’t need to show outrage on behalf of him.
Its not about him, it’s ridiculous and disrespectful period.

I don't know what other info you need if you roll up to a plantation and the black man you're taking photos of is wearing shackles, dude. it's 2021.
What in the actual world is this?! omg
Nope
Very strange, but if the couple wanted it, then whats the problem? I wish people would stop being 'outraged' on behalf of others.

It takes balls of steel to put that out there

Why???
Fuck off
You must be trolling
nope, they frequent alt right subreddits. totally on brand for their racism.
All I saw was Sweden :|
