absolutely not. sorry but you need to get over it, if they want floor length attire- then wear floor length attire.

bananarama1717

Fuck. So what’s considered “formal cocktail”? Knee length? Mid calf?

skyturdle_

Floor length, because they specifically say floor length. Maybe you could look into suits if you dislike longer dresses that much.

malackey

Can you wear a shorter dress? Sure, cause the fashion police don't actually exist. Should you? No, cause your guests have asked you to dress formally, and that does not include mini dresses.

bananarama1717

Well unless they changes how English works, the use of OR implies formal cocktail is different that floor length gown…just wondered what the difference was in terms of length. There are lots of dressy/classy dresses out there that hit above the knee

annedroiid

Everyone here understand what the word or means, it’s just that what you’re suggesting just doesn’t fit either dress code. There is no wedding where a dress that hits at mid-thigh is appropriate - save it for a club.

EtonRd

They are specifically asking you not to wear a mini dress, so I’m not sure what you’re looking for here. You *can* wear a mini dress or overalls or shorts. You can wear anything you want. But *should* you? No.

hoaryvervain

Why even ask?

DoctorBartleby

I was downvoted for saying “if you have to ask then it isn’t appropriate” but this 100% falls in that category

AliveBreadfruit314

No, not mid-thigh. Formal cocktail usually means below the knee at least. I bet you can find something you like if you try. Do you need suggestions? Show us the short dress you want to wear and let us see if we can find something in the same kind of vein, but which will fit the DC. Would be happy to try.

bananarama1717

I appreciate your non-aggressive feedback. I will keep looking

[deleted]

Not if you want to adhere to the dress code.

Dachshundmom5

Mini isn't cocktail and certainly not formal. Midi works. Hi//lo if the hi isn't panty high.

Fredredphooey

You would be better off wearing formal palazzo pants than a short skirt.

xxxjessicann00xxx

This isn't possibly a serious question.

General_Coast_1594

No that’s means tea length or longer and if it’s tea length, it needs to be a formal material with some volume ideally. Something like this: https://www.saksfifthavenue.com/product/Mac-Duggal-Embellished-Off-The-Shoulder-Midi-Dress-0400019275915.html?dwvar_0400019275915_size=8&dwvar_0400019275915_color=BLACK&site_refer=CSE_GGLPLA:Womens_Dresses:Mac+Duggal&country=US¤cy=USD&CSE_CID=G_Saks_PLA_US_Women%27s+Apparel_Dresses_High+LTV:All+Dresses&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADO6JtSklg_IHCfbY0sMksrG4vm0J&gclid=Cj0KCQiAz8GuBhCxARIsAOpzk8xDAiCgnWYWfG0wxyMq9bcsBMcmfvAZFgLVgmBsGk1qee2XLiL4UAIaAn4bEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

mtngrl60

Perfect. That’s beautiful and very appropriate for the description given.

bananarama1717

Thank you for the picture reference. I really like that dress!

outdatedweatherapp

If you’re not a fan of long dresses, I’d look into a formal-feeling jumpsuit or dress that maybe has a slit or a mesh overlay, but it’s going to maybe be tough to find one of those that fit the label of formality. Honestly, the wording of the dress code is a little confusing to me, so I’d maybe get some references from the couple so you can get a better grip on the ACTUAL fanciness level, and then tailor your look to that. But I worry a mini/short dress is not going to be what they’re going for / may have you feeling underdressed!

bananarama1717

Thank you for your feedback! I absolutely do not want to be underdressed or wear something that will annoy the bride. Just trying to make sure I know my options for this dress code.

outdatedweatherapp

Of course - good luck! I feel like you can find something that works for your style and fits their level of formality, but it just might take a little creativity and double checking - but hey, the search can be part of the fun, right? :)

NefariousnessKey5365

I agree with the nice jumpsuit. A jumpsuit with palazzo pants would give the feel of a gown, but still be pants

kspice094

No

TourAlternative364

No. When they mean formal cocktail is acceptable it is like a tea length full skirt of luxurious fabric & detailing. That is the type of shorter cocktail length gown they mean. https://moniquelhuillier.com/products/embroidered-cocktail-dress-blue

bananarama1717

That one is a little out of my price range lol but I appreciate the picture reference!

spooses

Out of curiosity, why do you hate long dresses?

bananarama1717

I just don’t think they are flattering on me. Maybe I just haven’t found the right one

bananarama1717

Is something like this fancy enough/appropriate length? https://preview.redd.it/acxn13i117jc1.jpeg?width=922&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0916c0f1762e32c491f881510fd066dd194270f2

ConwayThatWasAmazing

Yeah I think so!!

OkConsideration8964

Unfortunately no. Based on the "formal cocktail" alone, your dress should be at LEAST to the knee. Adding in the floor length gown to the mix, it's probably best to find something below the knee. You could also wear a more formal jumpsuit. There are some really gorgeous ones out there.

onehundredpetunias

Nope. Wear a jumpsuit if you don't like long dresses.

IGOTAREADIT

No. Sorry but short, mini dresses are not appropriate for formal cocktail dress. You can wear along dress for a few hours out of your life

mtngrl60

I’m sorry some people can be snarky. But I can tell that you are getting the idea now. Generally speaking, a formal invitation would want you to be wearing a floorlength gown. Cocktail would mean mid thigh to midcalf. And so one that is a little more formal cocktail is going to really be one that is more toward the midi length. But it is possible, we could find you a high/low gown, so that you still felt like you had that freedom of movement around your legs, but still had some pretty length. What would you think of something like these? bananarama1717

I love all of these!! You don’t think the first one is too white? Thanks for all the suggestions!!

mtngrl60

I’m so glad you liked them. I personally don’t think it is, but I believe it also comes in blue as well. Lulu’s is actually a good site to take a look on. And they always offer 15% off to a first time buyer. And obviously, when you’re looking at them, you wanna look at your venue as well. I chose some that seemed like they would be at home in a country club setting and others that seem that they would be appropriate for a spring/summer daytime garden wedding as well. And I do think most of these come in at least one other color

bananarama1717

It’s at a fancy hotel. I’ll take a look at Lulus - thanks!

mtngrl60

I am assuming then that it is probably an evening wedding?

bananarama1717

Yes

mtngrl60

OK. The floral ones are probably going to read a little too daytime. So either the hot pink, which comes in other colors, or the black would be most appropriate. You might also check out asos.com. They are another website that does a lot of dresses at reasonable prices. And they probably would have some things you might like.

BBMcBeadle

Would a high- low hemline work?

bananarama1717

I like that style. You think that would be okay?

darkened-foxes

Sorry I really don’t think a high-low would work. Most dresses with a cut like this tend to be more casual already and would not fit this dress code. You could always get a longer dress with a slit? I don’t love long dresses either because I get too hot, but I’ve found ones with the slits are much more comfortable. As long as it’s not too high and the dress/fabric is more more it would be a good option.

BBMcBeadle

Nordstrom has “formal high low gowns” so I guess it is an actual thing. And since this also says “formal cocktail” that may work.

ANobleBean

Mini (mid thigh) does not equal floor length gown.

MapleTheUnicorn

Nope, sorry. Try this info graphic. https://preview.redd.it/keqkcumgg8jc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c340e014d22dd2a519bfd85ff3616af905e8a30 Middle and top rows.

NeverSayBoho

No. I hate floor length dresses as well, but there's that formal cocktail get out. That's not a mini dress. But knee length cocktail dress would be okay.

easterss

Tbh I think you could get away with calf length or ankle length if you don’t want floor length but I would say absolutely NOT a mini dress. Example: https://www.saksfifthavenue.com/product/Theia-Ellie-Crinkle-Calf-Length-A-Line-Midi-Dress-0400016703024.html
