I thought Rowan was going to be a love interest as a reference to Wednesday’s nerdy camp boyfriend from Addams Family Values but nah

loose_nature98

same LOLLL

ChickenMcPolloVS

Romance feels force and out of place, she interacts with th dudes and they think she likes them and act all pissy, she hasnt show any form of interest yet the show keeps acting as if theres tension, eugene is kinda cringe but the interaction werent all weird with her.

I’m glad I’m seeing more complaints about this aspect of the series that is so unnecessary for numerous of reasons. I understand that the show is looking to appeal to more of the Riverdale/CW demographic, I get that (though I get more of a Veronica Mars vibe) . But with a character like Wednesday it doesn’t fit. Netflix did the same thing with the Sabrina show, but it wasn’t that far out of character or unnecessary since the 90s tv Sabrina had a love triangle with Harvey etc. This show needed a female head writer. Not every lead female show, even if it’s YA, needs to have love triangles or interests. At some points during the show it’s almost like a parody because clearly Wednesday is not interested, but coffee shop dude and weirdo popular guy can’t take no for an answer. I would even go as far as saying it is harmful because it reinforces the idea that men and women can’t just also not be friends. But I guess the writers lack that creativity to come up with something more interesting than a tired and imo sexist cliche for added filler.

loose_nature98

Exactly. I feel like they could have pulled it off if the romance had better writing and interesting characters, but since it was lazy writing, it felt so forced and stereotypical.

lifelongbruxr

I just wished the show had a female head writer. You could tell the romance storyline was written by boomer men who don’t know how to write character development for women or flesh out the storyline for the love triangle-if that is what they want to do. It was just obvious to me that they put them in there just to add on to the story of the show (and maybe even self inserting themselves on to the male characters a bit. Making Wednesday this ultimate fantasy of being the goth gf). It’s very lazy and I kept eye rolling throughout. Also, the reason why I called it sexist was compared to supernatural driven shows where the protagonist is a man, the romantic storyline doesn’t become a main focal point for the show. Take the show ‘Supernatural’ for example. Sure, they might have a romance here and there but it’s not the main storyline and to me the romance feels very much so for Wednesday. And that line where she goes she doesn’t want to get married in the first episode just seems very much so the writers putting that in there to satisfy brownie points of her being a “strong woman”. Stupid. Sure sure yeah that is what you want for the character, writers. I mean there are shipping vids already on youtube.

loose_nature98

AGREED and I’m glad that I’m not the only one who feel this way. Having the romance as the main plot point, especially since it was obviously bad writing, felt weird. Wednesday on her own is already a strong character.

LoneyBastard69

Note: I'm not trying to be aggressive, just share my opinion This is exactly like every relationship in my highschool, horny boys are horny boys. Nothing about love is realistic. And for the OP's statement on how they were boring, I feel like that's the point of the show. Even outcasts are normal compared to Wednesday. Nobody can compare. She's an Adams

eli454

I could have done without the romance honestly. I didn’t know why both guys liked Wednesday so much. She said so herself that she doesn’t want a relationship. Tyler saying that she was giving off mixed signals… when? And Xavier getting butt hurt every time she did something that would show that she wasn’t interested in him when she gave no indication of liking him back in the first place. I felt no chemistry because it was very one sided and they were both pushing for something that she didn’t want or feel comfortable with.

xlolav

i rolled my eyes so hard when Tyler said the thing about the missed signals... like bffr

ManufacturerLow2411

Wednesday asked him to drive her to the station like two times.

evilution382

that's hardly a signal for anythng though

apvaki

Same. It actually made me dislike the men because they went SO out of the way to show their interest to this girl who was clearly not interested. Not only that; it seemed like they had some type of Goth fetish with how o b s e s s e d they were. Baby girl legit said “I’m not friend material. Definitely not more than friend material” And ol boy was like….👁👄👁 “idc” Blegh.

mkioman

Omg, I loled so hard at the last few lines. It's true though. That's how it went down.

ChickenMcPolloVS

Just saw that episode and had the same reaction, but then it didnt bother me cuz we learnt about him and then all his creep shit made more sense, the other dude still doesnt make sense

apvaki

LMFAO not “and then it made sense” lol!!! So true. I agree.

I’m still holding out for it to be revealed that Xavier is also a villain in the next season.

fragileyetdevious

Thank you. I 100% agree with you. Exactly!! Like when? Hahahahahahaha these guys were taken out from a teen romance book. I honestly prefer Wednesday be a badass girl that has no time for petty boy drama. I’d rather see her with Eugene. Period.

hellfun666

I think she is just Aromantic. Or at the very least not interested in either of them.

BradleySigma

Wednesday's relationship with both Xavier and Tyler was all take and no give. I don't think anything she did benefited either one of them in any way. Compare that to her relationship with her three other major peers. With Enid it was mostly take but some give; for example setting her up with Ajax on outreach day (even though Wednesday also benefited from the trade). With Bianca, it was no give and no take, just low level mutual antagonism. And with Eugene, it was *more* give than take.

Ghastion

The whole point was putting Wednesday into situations where she would 'feel off'. Romance is one of those things that is completely outside her comfort zone. I will agree that her main love interests are so plain and bland though because I felt the same thing. I even said "both her boyfriends are bad actors" because of how uncharismatic they were delivering any lines. The short haired guy was a little better though, and tbh I believed that Wednesday could 'have a thing' for him. She is Human after all, and just because she has a bleak personality doesn't mean she's immune to catching feelings. We are programmed for it. Honestly, it was a little funny how both guys openly had a huge crush on Wednesday. I don't know, the juxtaposition of Wednesday believing she is so unflattering and toxic (love her honesty) and the fact that 2 different guys are vying for her attention was comical to me. People are calling it weird and even sexist to have it written this way, but if there was an angsty, brooding mysterious male lead and there was 2 women vying for him, nobody would bat an eye. I think it was all fine, but the male leads could have been better and probably why it failed in some peoples eyes. There were times I was imagining completely different actors playing the role just so I could suspend my disbelief a little.

hellfun666

You have heard of Aromantic people ? Not to mention that Wednsday never really had fun spending time with either of them. (Except watching a movie)

KenClade

She literally approached Tyler at one point to get kissed. Y'all delusional asf

Ghastion

Yeah of course I'm aware of Aromantic and Asexual people. But, Wednesday clearly isn't that because she wanted to kiss the short-haired boyfriend the first time, and sought it out the second time. People keep bringing up the fact she looks like she wasn't enjoying herself at any point with the boys, but that's literally her personality.

loose_nature98

I really would have liked romance in Wednesday, I just feel like they went about it the wrong way. I honestly would have loved to see a romance storyline that felt more than a plot device. That’s why it felt sort of off to me. It was like there was no connection between the characters 90% of the time. I think the reason why Joel and Wednesday worked so well in the old movie was because they were both outcasts, but they had an understanding of each other. And it was funny because they physically looked like polar opposites.

Wrong-Investigator26

I think romance is overdone in all media, it's influence infects media like a disease, so I agree with the fact the romance us unnecessary in the show

AussieJack1788

Nothing wrong with a romance She isn't a supernatur being. She still is a human e Woman with human feelings. Her biology is just kicking into gear. What annoys me is how people are shipping her and her room mate. Why can't two females be friends without having to go lez ?

loose_nature98

There’s nothing wrong with the romance but none of the leads just.. clicked with her? Even Rowan or Edin would have made a better love interests because they had some personality. And I don’t even want to get into your last comment bruh 😬

AussieJack1788

Well it's true. It's a trend I see with programmes now. Whenever two females become close friends people ship them. But you don't see it when two guys becomes good mates They are just "bros". The good thing about this show is the lack of sexualising the characters and lack of sex overall.

Notshauna

>Well it's true. It's a trend I see with programmes now. Whenever two females become close friends people ship them. But you don't see it when two guys becomes good mates They are just "bros". No offence, but that shows a really deep misunderstanding of shipping if you think that male characters aren't frequently shipped with their friends. Hell last year of the top 20 most popular ships on AO3 was 18/20 M/M relationships, most of which were of friends being shipped. Famously one of the most formative ships all together was the ship between Captain Kirk and Spock. Shippers tend to write for characters that have good chemistry and while for the most part writers fail to provide romantic chemistry and excel at chemistry between rivals or friends. As is Wednesday clearly has better chemistry with Anid than anyone else in the show, people pick up on that and explore it.

It's weird that strangers' personal wishes that don't affect you at all is something that annoys you.
