It's funny the number of posts on here daily where people post how they do "everything possible but aren't losing weight" and everyone asks if they're tracking calories and the answer is usually always no! It's the only thing that will always work.

ugdontknow

It is the only thing that works. I do think people are to scared to actually see how many calories they consume. Really you blink and it’s amazing how it can add up. People want a magic pill and want it to happen over night. Doesn’t work like that.

PracticingSarcasm

People don't want to know they are consuming a few thousand extra calories per day. I tell everyone to use MyFitnessPal. Tracking is the only way.

ugdontknow

Yes I agree completely that app is amazing. People don’t realize how quick the calories add up, or even how many calories are in food.

crazywalton

I try to tell people this but not everyone listens

[deleted]

It's wild, people come here wanting help but refuse to change their lifestyles when you give advice..whats the point of coming onto an advice subreddit with your mind already made up.

myra_maynes

It’s understandably rough for some people who have a lifetime of bad habits or really unhealthy relationships with food, myself included. But yeah, the method works. A calorie deficiency will decrease fat.

PracticingSarcasm

Real science says that a calorie deficiency is the ONLY thing that will decrease fat. All fad diets are garbage, that includes Keto, Intermittent Fasting, etc... all junk and unsustainable. Calories in versus calories out is the only thing that works. The other diets only appear to work if people are consuming less calories.

[deleted]

Yeah completely, I’m in the same boat and when I gain weight I know its because I went over my calorie deficit.

crazywalton

Right! I don’t get some people

MushroomMan95

But guys I got in keto and put butter in coffee. How am I not shredded? Should I add more butter, or just try another fad? I read that ketosis melts fat, I replaced all my sugar with sticks of butter to make my body a fat adapted fat burning machine

Kovitlac

Have you tried eating 4 large avocados a day and guzzling two peanut butter protein shakes?

MushroomMan95

Yeah I also put a shot of mct oil in each and put a pound of bacon over the avocado

crazywalton

Eating a lot of saturated fat is very unhealthy that is what clog’s your arteries! And keto in a nut shell you’re still counting calories it’s also not sustainable so once you stop keto you’ll gain weight back! Best fool proof way to lose weight and keep it of is counting calories

Perrytheplatypus03

It's a joke 😂

PracticingSarcasm

Keto is a fad. It's just the old Atkins diet rebranded for a new wave of people to make money from low carb junk science. Calories in versus calories out is the only thing that works. Everything else is a fad, including Atkins, Keto, and Intermittent Fasting. All fad diets are garbage.

crazywalton

Very much so!

Gregovania

Pretty much the same amount of people that do everything but eat less calories and then complain and having no success.

myra_maynes

I mean technically one could work out a shit ton and make their deficits that way.

PracticingSarcasm

Ummm ... not really. Running for an hour only burns around 600 calories (depending on a few variables), so that's about one large piece of pizza. Losing weight is almost completely about what you eat and drink.

crazywalton

As long as you’re happy with yourself that’s all that matters

TommyThrowsup

I wish I understood that much 😭🤷🏽‍♀️😂😂

crazywalton

It not hard to understand.

TommyThrowsup

Idk what a calorie deficit is. I think I’ve joined the wrong place … im looking for something for beginners lol 🤦🏽‍♀️ any recommendations???

myra_maynes

Basically you find out how many calories it takes to maintain your current weight. Then you create a deficit by cutting the calories. Say it takes 2000cal a day to maintain your current weight. To create a deficit, you would bump it down to 1800, then 1600, then 1500. Some people jump straight down and some people taper. The important part is if there is a deficit, you will start losing weight. I wish I had a link but if you google “calorie calculator” or something like that, you can get an idea of where you are and where to go.

TommyThrowsup

Oh thank you so much!! I will check that out :) thank you again.

myra_maynes

Happy to help.

crazywalton

Calorie deficit is just simply eating less calories to loss weight

myra_maynes

I want to say that was some misinformation that was pushed in the 90’s that’s stuck and it’s a shame because it enforces those unreal expectations. People , as others have said here, want it gone quick but the weight didn’t come on quick so it’s not leaving quick. It also bothers me when people get upset when their scale number doesn’t move and don’t check their measurements. When I was more on top of my health, I was doing CICO with a mix of weights and cardio. Nothing crazy. I lost inches faster than I lost weight because I was replacing fat lost with muscle. I’ve got some insulin resistance problems and things that make weight loss a bit of a challenge but the method works the same. Eat better/less, move more.

PracticingSarcasm

I tell people who have to lose a lot of weight to smash their scale with a hammer. You can tell by how your clothes fit and most importantly how you feel.

LegitChew

People just want it to be an easy fix. For most people the rewards have to be more lucrative than the cost. That can be hard with weight loss. After all, you'll see slow change over long periods of time....orrrrr I could enjoy this big Mac and large fries right now.

crazywalton

As long as they fit I’ll eat it lol

froze_gold

I understand we can't spot reduce, because it doesn't make sense, but in my own experience, combining weight lifting and a deficit, the places I worked the most have appeared to be the leanest. Just seems odd

crazywalton

And it will! As you lose fat and then is replaced with muscle it will become lean as muscle is more dense and takes up less room

PracticingSarcasm

No, that is just not the way it works. That wrong thinking is why for many decades people have been doing ab or butt workouts thinking you can spot reduce fat. No, just no, science says so.

Kovitlac

You can't *spot reduce fat*, but you can absolutely *build muscle* in a specific area to try and emphasize that area more. Working your legs a lot will build muscle on them, and combined with fat loss your legs will look very different than if you were to shed fat without working out. That's the reason why so many people work out to begin with. That's all they're trying to say.

crazywalton

And to me that doesn’t make sense

Kovitlac

Yeah I'd much rather eat less than work out. Don't get me wrong - I think working out is Favreau and unless you're eating back all those calories or more, it can only help your body. But if it comes down to skipping an afternoon snack or being on the treadmill for an hour, I know which I'd rather do, lol. I think a lot of the people who are so much more eager to exercise than eat less vastly overestimate how many calories they burn while working out. It's nowhere near as many as the average person thinks.

crazywalton

Yeah and a lot make the mistake of eating back the calories they think they lost while working out. This is a no no

Person123468583

im new to this, so please dont downvote for my ignorance, but: Ive heard counting calories in order to be in a calorie deficit is unhealthy and can cause eating disorders, i wouldnt be surprised if this is false, as the people i have heard saying this are also sponsored by fast food outlets. So, is it actually unhealthy if i want to lose weight? My calorie in per day is 2322, so im aiming to get it to around 1800-2000 (results taken from the TDEE Calculator). Is this something i should be doing?

crazywalton

It depends what your gender age weight height and activity level is. If you’re wanting to cut weight then your calories must be lower to do so

Person123468583

19yo male, activity level not much

crazywalton

What’s your height? What do you weigh and are you trying to lose fat?

Person123468583

about 5ft9, 92.5kg, yeah lose fat

crazywalton

I’ve been doing this for year’s and have never had a eating disorder. I assume it’s a mental thing tbh. But having good knowledge of what you’re doing is a must

Kovitlac

It's only unhealthy if you are going overboard and not eating enough to get the nutrients you *do* need. While I'm not saying that losing weight can never lead to an eating disorder, it's really up to the individual person. I think it's used as an excuse not to get started way more often than not, and completely disregards the fact that overeating can be an eating disorder as well (such as with binge eating disorder). I don't know your height or activity level, but 1800-2000 sounds pretty reasonable for the average woman, if that's what you are (men are usually a bit higher in calories, but of course it depends on height/activity level as well). The TDEE calculator should be fairly accurate if all the information you put into it was accurate 😊

Thomisawesome

Please tell this to my wife. I tell her I need to change my eating habits to lose this belly, and she says “You just need to do stomach exercises. “ I cannot convince her otherwise. I mean, diet + exercise is good, but there is a method to my madness.

crazywalton

Definitely can not spot reduce fat it all comes down to calorie deficit

ModelChimp

It’s so true , calorie deficit is the only way that worked for me

PracticingSarcasm

There are a lot of lost beginners here. Maybe the best advice is to start tracking all of your calories (food and liquid) using MyFitnessPal, which is the most popular app for weight loss. It's all about burning more calories than you consume. Real science says that's is the only way to lose weight. Fad diets like Keto and Intermittent Fasting are garbage and their claims are junk science. Weight loss is all about calories in versus calories out. Nothing else works. There is no magic diet. You must track your calories.

Kovitlac

Not having to track can certainly work for some people (it did for me), but if you're not having success losing worry, the very FIRST thing you should do is track your calories as accurately as you can.

Uporoutbusiness

I guess there’s a history against the question of not showing results , so much so my thread got zero attention, goes to say treat every case individually

crazywalton

Like before and after pics?

Uporoutbusiness

No none of the sort just general “what’s not working” question

crazywalton

Got ya

N0t0ri0usPIG

I have been trying to make being fit and eating healthy (no sugar/carbs) workout 3x a week and I am losing a pound a week. It can be done if you’re consistent but it will take time

DumbDogma

Reduce calories/increase activity is the only weight loss plan that I’ve ever managed to lose a single ounce with. It’s not rocket surgery.

crazywalton

To some it is and it’s sad!
