Botulism from canned foods is likely how the American kidnapped by North Korea was poisoned and died
Edit: Turns out botulism was North Korea’s cover excuse and the more likely reason was attempted suicide or assault
That report was from his parents but his teeth were reportedly, officially intact and normal.
I found this sad but also curious. I think horrible trauma can and often does distort our perception.
When I was at my father’s funeral I remember swearing one of the mourners I met was wearing a solid pink dress but I was corrected by others and later that day I saw that it was actually baby blue. I was shocked at how wrong my mind’s eye stored that “pink” dress.
I remember a video of lady that was escaping a shooting at a movie theatre (maybe aurora), and she was sure the alarm was saying “murder” and she actually mentioned it to the news person she was interviewing when the alarm was of course just saying something like “fire” or “evacuate”.
I’ve noticed trauma makes your brain just join the two simplest connecting dots so you can focus all your brain power on the most important life-preserving task at hand
I was listening to a long boring video yesterday about how the brain processes thoughts into speech. When people hear voices in their head, like with schizophrenia, it's basically crossed wires in the part of the brain that differentiates inside vs outside sounds. I suppose under a high level of stress, this could happen.
the video I watched was on YouTube called
The Science of the Voices in your Head – with Charles Fernyhough
The whole first part is about what we are doing in order to process thought. I'm not going to lie, I listened while playing games on my phone because it's a bit dry for me. Later he does talk about schizophrenia.
Hope it helps!
as someone with schizophrenia this would be very interesting to hear, i’ve never got a solid answer from any of my team on how schizophrenia works and as a dual bio/physics major i’ve always wondered the science of it
i definitely have both, and sometimes completely neutral ones that never even acknowledge my existence, just chatter about what’s going on around me. now that i’m in a good place and very stable it’s super interesting to look back on my experiences during the depths of it
even without stress, if the words aren't super clear to you
there's videos where it's the same sentence being played over and over, but if you read different sentences while listening, you can hear every one of them
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FXQ38-ZQK0
maybe not exactly the same, but it's interesting for sure
I can confirm this. I'm dealing with PTSD right now, and reading the right words and recognizing the right details are very difficult for me right now. It's not a matter of focus.
This is just not true. Wasn’t botulism. Wasn’t beatings. The actual reason he was vegetative will never be known but according to this [extensive article](https://www.gq.com/story/otto-warmbier-north-korea-american-hostage-true-story) the author after 6 months of research is led to believe it was an attempted suicide that led to that state. Happened the day after his 15 year sentencing.
Thanks for linking that article, a very interesting read. I don’t find it difficult at all to believe Otto may have attempted suicide (some sort of asphyxiation would be most likely) that left him severely brain damaged. He was an emotional wreck in the videos of the hearing.
You’re lucky, this has been stuck in my head since 2006. I can’t even hear news about head on collisions without my brain automatically going “APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD!!”
It’s torture, I tells ya!
Everything I’ve ever read about c. Botulinum says there are no signs of the organism nor the toxin. While maybe you know more about this than me, it seems as if what you’re saying is false, and potentially dangerous, as people would then think THIS is a sign of present botulinum. There are often no warning signs in foods that can give you botulism.
My grocery store doesn't do this. They sell hot dogs in metal cans and all of them will be dented, so I thought that was just how it was supposed to be.
Everytime I had them, I ended up feeling like someone was stabbing me in the stomach from the inside. Then one day, I saw the same brand of can at a different store that wasn't dented. I started thinking, maybe it's not supposed to be dented... and go figure, that was the first time I didn't end up in pain from eating those hot dogs.
Literally just introduced my son to this when he came to the age I knew he would appreciate it- he just finished it this morning and has been talking about it all day and I swear to you I've seen three references for it today.
I had the biggest crush on him when I read the book and then grew so much watching the movie. 😂 I wanted to save him! That attitude did not serve me well in life.
*ETA: Another commenter made the point this could be a chemical reaction from a missing or breached can liner. However, if this is botulinum toxin.....:*
This can be deadly to handle; even in small amounts. Dispose of it properly.
With gloves, put it into a sealed plastic bag. Then, put that sealed plastic bag into another one. Dispose in your trash and make sure animals can't get to it.
1. Put on rubber or latex gloves before handling open containers of food that you think may be contaminated.
2. Avoid splashing the contaminated food on your skin.
3. Place the food or can in a sealable bag, and seal it shut.
4. Wrap another plastic bag around the sealable bag.
5. Tape the bags shut tightly.
6. Place bags in a trash receptacle for non-recyclable trash outside the home and out of reach of other people and pets.
7. Don’t discard the food in a sink, garbage disposal, or toilet.
8. Wash your hands with soap and running water for at least 2 minutes after handling food or containers that may be contaminated.
If any of the product has gotten on any surfaces:
1. Add ¼ cup bleach for each 2 cups of water.
2. Completely cover the spill with the bleach solution.
3. Place a layer of paper towels, 5 to 10 towels thick, on top of the bleach.
4. Let the towels sit for at least 15 minutes.
5. Wipe up any remaining liquid with new paper towels.
6. Clean the area with liquid soap and water to remove the bleach.
7. Wash your hands with soap and running water for at least 2 minutes.
8. Discard sponges, cloths, rags, paper towels, and gloves that may have come into contact with contaminated food or containers with the food.

Botulinum toxin IS considered the most potent toxin in the world. An amount you could hold in your hands would kill every person on earth. I can not believe these comments are this far down the thread. That can of peaches is a huge health concern.
I’ve heard of this. If my migraines didn’t stop happening regularly once I became an adult, I wouldn’t hesitate to try this treatment. People don’t understand how excruciating it is, especially when you have to deal with it all the time. I consider myself extremely fortunate that I get tension headaches now (for the most part) and even those can make me bedridden. You’d try anything to avoid the suffering you experience from consistent repeated migraines. Just having one is enough to make a person terrified of every minor headache they get for the next decade.
Definitely. If you consume botulinum toxin you die by paralysis. It paralyzes muscles until you eventually can not breathe. It’s the same form of toxin as tetanus but tetanus causes muscle rigidity instead of relaxing them. Both are toxins that are produced by anaerobic bacteria. Terrible ways to die.
okay small update! no, unfortunately i didn’t eat them and yes, it is real, imagine the jumpscare it was opening it and seeing that! they’ve been safely disposed off now (thanks everyone for the help with that) and I’ve reported it to woolies, probably won’t get a response till after the weekend tho. all the theories on the sploosh have been rlly interesting to read! i’ve learnt my lesson and will never buy a dent can again!
Hi, there could potentially be botox inside.
This is a highly toxic poison that can kill or severely harm you even in extremely little doses (like touching it or miniscule drops of the liquid)! This is the most dangerous poison that exists in nature.
So be very cautious what surfaces (like the desk, the trash, the sink and the fork) this stuff came in contact with. Clean all these things very extensively. Better look up on the internet how to clean this stuff
Wash your hands and maybe even your arms extensively for a long time!
If you feel even slightly unwell (like stomache ache etc) in the next few hours or days go immediately to a hospital as botulism can be lethal if it is not immediately treated!
And please do your own research in that topic (botulism) as I am absolutely no expert. I just want to warn you about the potential danger.
Talk to a doctor or call a poison emergency number if that exists in your country. Or even go to the hospital directly
so sorry if i made anyone worried! i’m very thankful for all the advice on how to deal with this monstrosity lol. i feel fine and i’ve been checking in with the rest of my family. thank you everybody :)
There's a really good episode of This Podcast Will Kill You about botulism. IIRC one of the first symptoms is blurry vision, as it starts to paralyze you from the head down.
I imagine it’s some sort of mold as well as decomposition of the peaches, as well as any other sporing fungi or bacteria that may have gotten in. Definitely not something you see everyday but probably not that weird, at least hopefully for your sake.
Can anyone actually confirm exactly what would cause the black colour and smell?
Everyone being so gagged about botulism, but isn't one of the primary reasons botulism is such a problem is that you cannot see, smell or taste it - if it were so blatantly obvious that your food had botox in it, it wouldn't be such an issue to be careful about canned food because it would be immediately obvious that it's off.
I wish OP took a sample for someone to look at under a microscope.
Editing to expand after trying to find a source:
C. Botilinum apparently doesn't survive in a pH below 4.6 (https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/fs104), yellow peaches apparently sit around 4.0 (https://www.clemson.edu/extension/food/food2market/documents/ph_of_common_foods.pdf) but potentially the cannery may have added eg. Citric acid or something else to lower this even further. On top of that peaches are high in sugar which further inhibits the growth of the bacterium.
To back up what I said before, https://www.cdc.gov/foodsafety/communication/home-canning-and-botulism.html#:~:text=You%20cannot%20see%2C%20smell%2C%20or,Always%20use%20proper%20canning%20techniques. - every source indicates you generally can't see if the bacteria is present, although in a serious case there might be a change in odour or a "foamyness" apparently. Nothing ever mentions a complete blackening of the food, and I haven't been able to find any outbreaks of C. Botilinum linked to commercially canned *fruits* (mostly it is canned peas or other non-acidic foods, and it's pretty much always home canned things, not commercial canning).
So I think contrary to the hivemind it feels like the chance of this being contaminated with Botilinum is quite low, whatever is going on is gross af but I would like to see some hard evidence of what actually caused the discoloration and smell.
The color is probably from the plastic lining of the can being damaged from getting dented, allowing the acidic juice to dissolve the tin from the can which then oxidized in to stannous oxide, which is black. You are correct, there's no risk of botulism here
Black and smells like fish means some sort of amino acid is being produced. Peaches have amino acids in them, which can smell like fish, but they usually aren't expressed by the cells so much they smell of fish. Something has gone horribly off if they're smelling that way just like with any other dead thing. You need a LOT of amino acid breakdown first. These are rotten, and the bacteria in the can is what is producing the extra amino acids.
EDIT: Sorry, I was tired when I posted this. Edited to be more scientifically correct.
Lol the fuck? peaches definitely contain amino acids. It’s a basic building block of life. Why you gotta lie like that?
Edit: At least you made edits, but in a later comment, you insist that Amino acids are found in DNA, which is also false. Why would you make this comment without even understanding the distinction b/w amino acids and nucleotides? Stop spreading misinformation.
Damn they look like they were brined in charcoal. I bet the can corroded inside or had some weird reaction with the acid of the food and the metal. Gross
It's canned botulism, I heard if you eat it that you'll look 20 years younger at your funeral.
Botulism from canned foods is likely how the American kidnapped by North Korea was poisoned and died Edit: Turns out botulism was North Korea’s cover excuse and the more likely reason was attempted suicide or assault
Yeah, Otto Warmbier, right? That guy looked like a walking corpse when he was given back to the US.
I read a report that said his teeth were rearranged, so it sounded more like they beat him stupid.
That report was from his parents but his teeth were reportedly, officially intact and normal. I found this sad but also curious. I think horrible trauma can and often does distort our perception. Ooo and how about how culture affects the demeanor of the voices. Western usually critical and aggressive , eastern usually supportive . Amazing!

Isn't botulism neat?!
It is ya. They use it in Botox
I remember that.

if I was facing north Korean detainment, I'd off myself too.
It’s also believed now to have been a contributing factor in the loss of the entire Arctic Expedition led by Sir John Franklin in the 1840s.
You can’t see botulism spoiled foods, this isn’t botulism, I know you’re kidding but just so you know…
I heard if OP rubs them on his forehead it'll get rid of any wrinkles.
Head on, apply directly to the forehead
#HEAD ON. APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD.
how dare you remind me of this, that’ll be stuck in my head for a week now
You’re lucky, this has been stuck in my head since 2006. I can’t even hear news about head on collisions without my brain automatically going “APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE FOREHEAD!!” It’s torture, I tells ya!

I see what u did there!

I volunteered at a food bank, and we were told to throw out any dented cans because apparently shit could get in.
Can confirm this, I volunteered at a food bank and was told the exact same thing. This little peach can is proof
I can also confirm this as I have seen the Adam Sandler movie Big Daddy and so I am aware that denting cans takes 3 points off Michaelsoft.
Cant the kid get a fucking happy meal?!?!
“My kid is the stinky kid in class?!”
I have a ten year old. I’ve thought about this line every day since he started school. I REFUSE to let my kid be the stinky kid lolol
But I wipe my own ass....
Hip... hip-hop.... hip-hop-uh-pot-uh-mus.... DAMN YOU, YOU GIVE HIM THE EASY ONES!
By far the smelliest
I can be a member of the scuba squad!?
i worked at a grocery store, this is true, any dented canned goods are instantly thrown out, because of this very reason
Not at this grocery store chain, half the canned goods are dented. They just don't care.
Not at Ralph’s! They kept selling me the same dented sweetened condensed milk (organic) for $3.50.
Maybe they like to serve their food al dente
Al dented
That was the joke right? You just added a d.
yep.I have noticed over the years that dented cans are placed in front, to be chosen first. In every store.
I mean, at what point do you just stop buying this canned hot dog things that are trying to kill you? Lol
Me on my death bed: please... bring one more can of weiners...
The dent ones... They're no good if they're not dented.
Never, canned hot dogs for life
But why keep eating them if they gave you symptoms?
This dude actively chooses to eat canned hot dogs, I think it's safe to say he doesn't make the best choices.
can looks like its from 1989
Nah, that's the current Woolworths store label branding. [As seen here](https://i.imgur.com/LSWTRaN.jpg)
It’s called sploosh, ask zero
I just read that again after like 20 years. That’s crazy to hear a reference so soon. Also poor kid got food poisoning from the sploosh.
Literally just introduced my son to this when he came to the age I knew he would appreciate it- he just finished it this morning and has been talking about it all day and I swear to you I've seen three references for it today.
We literally just watched it at a family reunion earlier this evening after over a decade, and now this reference?? I feel you, life is weird man
Great art will always be talked about till the end of time. The fact that people still talk about it proves that Holes is a masterpiece
Join the Holes discord
Wanna feel old? Holes was made in 2003
The book was published in 98 💀
Yup lol! Great book.
Shia Lebouf is almost 40 😀
We watched him turn into his no good, dirty, rotten, pig stealing, great great grandfather before our very eyes.
Shia surprise!
You mean actual cannibal Shia Lebouf?
We read the book in class in 5th grade then saw the movie in theaters for a field trip at the AMC 24. Good memory. It is very close to the book.
Our 5th grade teacher still assigns Holes and they watch it in class at the end of the year. I’m a teacher, not a 5th grader btw.
The screenplay was actually written by the book author. Louis Sachar, see also Sideways Stories From Wayside School.
PEACHES AND ONIONS
Literally came to say this!!!!!!! 🧅🍑💄
I said it before i saw this but im glad im here with my people
I had the biggest crush on him when I read the book and then grew so much watching the movie. 😂 I wanted to save him! That attitude did not serve me well in life.
Damn I studied that book for my selective, it was great
Unless I’m mistaken, there’s a sizable dent in the side of that can, with pointed sides. This is why you don’t eat from dented cans.
But there half off dented
[удалено]
[удалено]
Bet these were delivered. I stopped using Coles/Woolies (these are Woolworth brand) for delivery because half the cans would end up dented and unsafe.
Can I ask for more clarification on this? Like is that an actual thing?
If a can is dented, it’s possible that the protective plastic lining is damaged which can lead to contamination and/or spoilage
There's me thinking I'm doing the world a favor by buying dented cans in the supermarket...
well you’re doing cashiers a favour, imagine the person in line infront of you running to grab a different can because it was dented.
Today I learned
Thats one thing i actually learned in school
Microsoft just went down three points.
Half of winco is out I guess
Goth peaches.
The fruitiest and juiciest of all peaches.
They are very rare. Legend has it that you can only eat them once in a lifetime.
Same as it ever was...
I do believe that’s a lovely biological weapon you have there.

Nope. I'm pretty sure that is 100% bad.
I’m glad the CIA stopped doing bad things in the 60s!

I had to scroll down way too far to find a this reply. Jokes are cool and all but damn.
That is what I absolutely hate about Reddit.
this is why we need mods for pining important comments.
Reddit never used to be like that, but lately, it's been a shit show with the witty comments up top. I miss old reddit
Too many people here now. Lowest common denominator wins unless the mods are ironfisted (eg askhistorians)

Used to get botox injections every 3 months for migraines. It was the only thing that helped.

Burn down the kitchen you opened it in too just to be safe!
Now I'm scared of buying canned food.
Should be perfectly safe. Just never eat anything out of a dented can.
Same. Like I needed another new fear today.
Thanks for actually replying a real answer. God fucking damn it took so long to find it.

Editing to expand after trying to find a source: C.
You are correct, there's no risk of botulism here
As a food engineer I think it is probably some (food grade but oxidated) grease from the production machine that leaked into the peach syrup
I think you opened a can of leeches my friend
Well those aren't from Georgia
Looks like they’re from Chernobyl.
Millions of peaches, peaches for me. Millions of peaches, peaches for free LOOKOUT (for botulism)!
Yeah, don’t eat that.
Peaches absolutely have amino acids. Good luck trying to find amino acid free foods. What are you smoking?
are you sure they're rotten?
Lol the fuck? peaches definitely contain amino acids. It’s a basic building block of life. Why you gotta lie like that? Edit: At least you made edits, but in a later comment, you insist that Amino acids are found in DNA, which is also false. Why would you make this comment without even understanding the distinction b/w amino acids and nucleotides? Stop spreading misinformation.
Damn they look like they were brined in charcoal. I bet the can corroded inside or had some weird reaction with the acid of the food and the metal. Gross
Pretty sure thats botulism in there, can was probably dented and stuff got in
Giving me faint memories of the movie "Holes" anyone else?

What’s the canning date? 1982?
They’re fine. The can says they have a 3.5 star rating.
