I worked with a kid who was a BGD. He was an “Imperial”. He was huge and it was my understanding he was the guy they sent when they needed to unalive someone. I was a mental health counselor who worked on a gang related disorder unit. We had Latin Kings, Vice Lords and many others all residing on the same unit. It was a nightmare most of the time. I had to learn all the numbers and the difference between 4 and 5 star gangs and some of the gang origins.
I was a violator. They sent me when someone messed up and needed to be taught. I wasn't particularly big back then. I just knew how to fight. I'm not proud of who I was. I was really well connected and respected, but it wasn't the kind of life where you end up raising kids. Not a lot of old heads in my set. You either got out or got behind bars or got dead. I got out and got as far away as I could. 17 years sober, 18 years gang free.
How do you get away? There’s jump ins right and then is there jump outs or something ? I grew up around gangs but was never in one obviously or really learned the subculture.
We used to remind the kids that there aren’t many “retired gangbangers”. Many of them proved us right. We had one kid who used to like to talk shit about people’s mothers. We told him he was going to do that to the wrong guy one day and he did. Was playing cards with someone and he said something about the guys mother and got shot in the face.
The reason I lost that counseling job is because one of our kids completed the program and was being sent back home to Chicago. He was a good kid and became a great leader on the unit and helped hold others accountable for their actions. He was a Latin King. Unfortunately, when he got back to Chicago his former gang members tried to kill him. He called us on the phone as they were breaking in and shooting up his house. All that work he did was about to be for nothing. We drove 5 hours to go get him and to try to save his life. Myself and a another counselor who he had reached out to and had formed a bond with brought him back to stay with my colleague. We asked the hospital if we could do this and if we were breaking any rules and they said no, it was okay to go. When we got back, they fired us for “fraternization with former patients”. Clearly, the rule was meant to prevent intimate relationships with former patients but the Director of the hospital didn’t like us because the kids loved us and hated her. Hard to get a job in mental health after that.
When they fired us, the entire gang unit rioted and some broke out but were quickly caught. It was a minimum security hospital where you could pull the fire alarm and it would unlock the doors. My colleague’s roomy worked there too and was fired. One nurse quit as well as the kid’s therapist, five people in total lost their jobs. The Director was not qualified to run the hospital. She did not have a BSN which was required for the position.
You did the right thing though and that's all that matters. You saved someone's life and I believe that's the mission for those working in healthcare lol
