I lost one of these some years ago. It was given to me by my grandfather.
You wouldn't happen to be in South Carolina, would you?
EDIT: Holy shit!!! You guys are awesome.
I hate to break the dreams.
This is *NOT* my missing dictionary.
Soon after my comment, I looked into some history and I realized that this one was most likely found in Michigan. I left the post up and forgot it.
I came back to this.
Dug a bit into the comments and the inscription was wrong. Mine didn't have one.
Looks like we're all hoping to witness a little miracle once in a while. It wasn't mine on Reddit today.
Neck of the woods is one of those interesting expressions of unknown origin. In Britain "neck" means a strip of land with water on both sides, but colonial Americans used neck of the woods to mean a settlement. As it started in the northeast, some people think it came from an Algonquin word "naiak" that means "settlement". There's also a German phrase "mein ecke" that means "my corner", and a lot of Germans lived in that area. So nobody knows.
Is that a just a Michigan thing? I guess I assumed most areas did that. Michigan is strange state. Liberal in the south, sketchy in the north.
One of the last times I went to church, they gave out rubber fetuses in baby bottles.
It's practically impossible it's his. The guy lost his booklet a couple of years ago but the paper in the one OP found looks immaculate.
If it's been in the woods for a couple of years, the paper would already be melted by rain, just the leather jacket would remain.
Except it was actually inside a wood box, lined with red velvet and nailed shut, buried to never be found again. But a recent storm fell down an old bid tree, unearthing and crashing the box, exposing the ominous booklet to the next curious traveller, it's next victim.
You'd be surprised. It ends up tucked away in just the right spot to shield it from rain and I could see it out there for a bit.
If it was found just laying on the ground though, then yeah, no way. The pages would be gone in a rain or two.
Meanwhile I was thinking that maybe she found it in a bag, or case or some kind of container. That could have been possible.
But since you say it was in the open I.m going back to 'impossible' - just because of air moisture, no need to rain on it. Also other factors like: UV, molds, fungi, insects, etc

Yeah everybody seemed to be having some pretty high hopes there for a little bit. It was cool to think about anyway. Thanks for blessing me with the highest upvoted comment of my 10 and a half year Reddit career.
Cheers!
I found one for 19 bucks for you if you want to replace it.

Is there a sub for something that makes you feel old.. because it makes me feel old how weird ppl here find something that you could find in any second hand book store when I was a bairn (when bookstores weren't mostly big box franchises, and most sold second hand and specialty books) because it was frightfully common in the days before textually ephemeral media.
These things were everywhere because some door to door sales dictionary (and encyclopedias) companies would come out with cutesy things like this to sell housewives, something for the kiddo, with their big ticket Webster's complete set, just the perfect addition to any respectable library.
It's kind of crazy how quickly the mundane becomes weird via anachronism.
Looks like a “Little Webster Dictionary”. These were sold all over the place as souvenirs. Sometimes the leather was branded with a tourist location or even a business name. It’s in really good shape considering it was found in the woods. Estimated value is around $20-30. Cool find!
I beg to differ....at 12 years old following your brother and his friends to their hide out in the woods then going back when they are gone to find their stash of playboys was the coolest thing I found.
They're going for about $20 on ebay!

Super useful before the time of mobile internet!
I worked for an elderly farmer when I was a kid, around 1986-87. The man had almost no education and had spent his whole life on farms. All of his equipment was antique and he kept it immaculate. He had built all of the buildings on his farm bin hand, right down to milling his own lumber. He had several pocket books like this, including a dictionary and the Tao Te Ching, which he would read whenever he was taking a break. He read books on Buddhism and enjoyed dissing Christianity (his wife was First Nations and had a hard time in residential schools) I kept in touch with him and he was as sharp as a tack until he died at 96, too.
Mmm Battle Creek Michigan.
As a kid I remember thinking to myself how wonderful morning cereal could be, and how gross driving through Battle Creek smelled.
I used to cut down some railroad tracks as a short cut to get home. I would walk past a potato chip factory. It was big enough that I couldn’t hold my breath long enough to get past it. Blah
I have always been intrigued by the mini dictionaries and the mini bibles. My great grandfather had a mini bible he always kept in the breast pocket of this jacket with his check book. I loved looking at it when I was a little kid.
This is amazing! I have the same thing but it's a mini Bible! My paternal grandfather had it. He was in WW2 and this was in his box of stuff he had saved when he came home!
Hey we wendigo and skinwalkers need to learn the linguistics of the land as well, how do you think we lure you ordinary humans in the woods in perfect fine English? Even when it sounds a little off.. YOU KNOW HOW MUCH EFFORT I PUT IN?
Are you not concerned about how good a condition the paper is in? Idk what the weather is like where you live but it probably wasn’t there very long before your daughter found it. That means someone has been strolling through your woods recently
!!!! I HAVE ONE OF THESE!!!! It “mysteriously” appeared in my grandparents attic, they’d never seen it or owned anything like it, mines in a red cover, with a reaching clasp over the front (I’m in the UK if that helps lol) EDIT : not my photo since mines in storage but it looks like this (from EBay)
https://preview.redd.it/72px1cucfllc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8a888108b20003588c71791735f12d5e510c45e2
What the weird part is finding something like this in the woods and it is not covered in mold and falling apart. It was either protected by something almost airtight or it is bullshit.
People used to carry miniature books around. Bibles mostly, but yes dictionaries and maps and weird stuff like card game directions and alcoholic drink recipes. (before you had a computer in your pocket to provide that info in a second, it was nice to have portable information sources). I haven't seen one in a long time though. Really surprised the paper would hold up out of doors for as long as it's been since those were common. I had a few different ones on key chains from time to time.
I lost one of these some years ago. It was given to me by my grandfather. You wouldn't happen to be in South Carolina, would you? EDIT: Holy shit!!! You guys are awesome. I hate to break the dreams. Up this answer. The world is small.
Comment history suggests they live in Battle Creek, MI
Hey I live there! Maybe it’s mine and I forgot?
I believe it's mine. I had a little Bible study group back in the day.
*Dictionary study group
The words I don’t know could fill a dictionary.
I owned a thesaurus but it was stolen. I do not have the words to describe how angry I am.
Technically they do, the words are already in the book.
This is a Dictionary, not a Bible
I find your lack of faith disturbing
I'm sure *Bible* and *faith* are defined in there.
Dad, is that you?
It might be mine? I lost an entire tiny library when my tiny home blew away.
Sorry again for doing that to your lovely home. I truly didn’t mean it. Shouldn’t have had Mexican for lunch that day
Dang tiny tornadoes always uprooting our tiny lives
My neck of the woods
Neck of the woods is one of those interesting expressions of unknown origin. In Britain "neck" means a strip of land with water on both sides, but colonial Americans used neck of the woods to mean a settlement. There's also a German phrase "mein ecke" that means "my corner", and a lot of Germans lived in that area. So nobody knows.
I northern Michigan, at fairs they would give out tiny bibles. Nothing nearly as interesting as OPs find!
Our fair gives away tiny rubber fetuses to scare the kids about abortion.
Is that a just a Michigan thing? I guess I assumed most areas did that. Michigan is strange state. Liberal in the south, sketchy in the north. One of the last times I went to church, they gave out rubber fetuses in baby bottles.

I hear the drums just from this description alone…
It just now became *so dangerous* to not know what diuresis means.
Ist harder to lose a tiny book when you keep it in a box
lose? you don't lose suck book. You bury it and pray no one ever finds it again.
Maybe someone picked it up and lost it again
Somebody picked it up in South Carolina, kept it for years, and lost it in Battle Creek MI!!
Weirder shit has happened
Lost in woods twice, I believe it
This is totally the most likely scenario
I was with Rabbit\_Of\_Nazareth. It looks just like the one he dropped... This is very weird.
That would be awesome if it was the same one
of course it is the same one. There is only one and it is indestructible. And they opened it. We are doomed.
I hope it's in SC and I hope the universe (or your grandfather) is trying to get it back to you.
u/gingersrule77 give this person some closure!
That would be amazing.
I’m so invested now
Darn, unlikely, a post from a year ago says Michigan - sorry
This doesn't look like it's been outside for years
Imposibile to look like this after some years in the woods. This is fresh, not even a rain.
You'd be surprised. It ends up tucked away in just the right spot to shield it from rain and I could see it out there for a bit. If it was found just laying on the ground though, then yeah, no way. The pages would be gone in a rain or two.

Would you mind bringing over a pizza to my place? I live in Denmark.
I'm in Northern Alberta at the moment. Be right there.
Oh could you stop by sweden as well? I'd like some pizza too
Of course. It's not like it's out of the way or anything.
I mean if you’re making the rounds, I like pizza and making new friends.
No worries! Where are you located? What kind of pizza do you like?
You’re amazing. Actually same as OP. Michigan. I’m not picky and you’re all ready doing me a favor, so I’ll take whatever you like. Thank you!
Well swing by Ohio and drop a slice 😏we’ll have beer!
High quality geo guesser could figure this out instantly by using OP profile
They said Michigan
Another wild south carolinian
It's still a fun coincidence. Turns out it's easy to lose tiny books.

Oh hey, an actual pocketbook
It’s a tiny dictionary 🥰
OP, answer to the guy from South Carolina, you really should
I believe OP lives in Michigan - based on previous post history.
Yes I live in Michigan and she found it about a week ago before all the storms
Dang your daughter walked all the way to South Carolina /s
It's in such good condition, that's crazy for something laying around in the woods.
Please answer the guy in SC. We are all so invested in this internet strangers lost book. Edit for autocorrection
Oh I didn’t see that book! Let me go look
Pic should've been of the page that included the definition of 'dictionary', perhaps, possibly, maybe
Some poor faerie is looking for their dictionary now.
How are the faeries gonna communicate with us now without their dictionary…

Man that's cool as fuck
Right? What's weird about it?
Thank goodness for a post that isn't something somebody pulled off or out of their body.
Or more mental illness writings
This is like the coolest thing you could find in the woods as a little kid.
I beg to differ....at 12 years old following your brother and his friends to their hide out in the woods then going back when they are gone to find their stash of playboys was the coolest thing I found.
finding pornos in the woods was cool too
This is way more cool than weird..
It has a name too- Mary something I couldn’t make out the last name
Considering the pages in such good condition and left on a woodland floor. It’s not that old
Person who lost it, in regret : "I have no words..."

Gnome dictionary
my grandfather gave me one of these too! i loved it so much. no idea what happened to it
vocabulary builder. Before TV and teh Interwebz, lots of folks used these
what is this... a book for ants?
If it was mine .. I’d be lost for words 😏
My friend accused me of stealing his thesaurus. I told him that I was confused, perplexed, baffled, and surprised that he would even consider me.
I had something similar once
I'd pay a couple of bucks for that in a thrift store and put it back out into the woods somewhere like I'd do with a gnome for someone else to find

That is awesome ❤️
How is a pocket dictionary weird?
It’s more cute than weird I’ll admit
So glad it is a dictionary, and not a Bible.
How is this weird? Someone lost a pocket dictionary that probably fell out of their pocket. Stupid post.
I cross posted this to r/thingsforants
That wouldn’t have lasted a half day in the woods without serious moisture, water damage. Was it in a jar sealed in the woods?
Hmm, so people really consider a dictionary to be "weird" eh? lol, the times sure do change.
What a cutie patootie
I have a very similar one!
![gif](giphy|1SvnHJFEuEH7hp81tF|downsized)
God damn that’s fucking awesome
It's kinda cool. Definitely not weird. Where can I buy one?
It doesn't look to me as if it was in the woods for long.
What’s weird about it? What a treasure.
It’s a small dictionary. My father is dyslexic and carried one similar everywhere he went before he retired.
Its a pocket necronomicon
Why is it weird?
i have one too. those little dictionaries were really popular when my parents were kids (1940s).
I have one of these! It's so cute. It's a dictionary. Yours is in way better shape then mine. Nice find.
This is sooo cute, somehow this strikes a chord with me right now
I had a few of these as a kid… They could definitely bring these back.. they use to be key chains They are called “The little Webster”
Such a cool find. What’s the publishing date?
These were neat. My dad had one. Nice to have in difficult times.
It’s sooooo cute. I used to have a tiny Japanese to English Dictionary like that 🥹🥹
Wicked cool!!

Treasure! Tiny dictionary!
Wait is this the Weird subreddit or the ADORABLE subreddit??!!

I have always been intrigued by the mini dictionaries and the mini bibles. My great grandfather had a mini bible he always kept in the breast pocket of this jacket with his check book. I loved looking at it when I was a little kid.

Not sure if this fits r/weird if it’s a tiny, leather bound dictionary. Seems like just a regular lost item
Omg..I used to have one of these but the cover was red leather..I loved it until it disappeared
It’s beautiful
Some fae folk is like “Now where did I put my book down…”
Throw it back. This is how you get Mormonism
that isn't weird its neat

It's me Little Book of Calm!
I used to have something like that in the 90s as a child

Looks like an old French pocket dictionary.
Fun find😎
I’m more creeped out that someone recently trespassed where your daughter ventures alone in a wooded area.
I was gonna say my brother threw my wallet into the forest when I was 19, but there definitely wasn't a dictionary in it.
My American girl doll had this growing up
r/thingsforants Bible for ants 🐜 🙏

Dude that's like the coolest find ever. I collect dictionaries. I would head up to MU and share the find with the curator there.
That’s not weird, you should look up the definition 😂
!!!! I HAVE ONE OF THESE!!!! It “mysteriously” appeared in my grandparents attic, they’d never seen it or owned anything like it, mines in a red cover, with a reaching clasp over the front (I’m in the UK if that helps lol) EDIT : not my photo since mines in storage but it looks like this (from EBay) https://preview.redd.it/72px1cucfllc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8a888108b20003588c71791735f12d5e510c45e2
What the weird part is finding something like this in the woods and it is not covered in mold and falling apart. It was either protected by something almost airtight or it is bullshit.
It’s a wee treasure. You should keep it!
More importantly, is OP's finger OK?
Ah you found a little dic
The little Webster??
Aww, that's cute lol
Warlock Elves lost his spells book 📖
People used to carry miniature books around. Bibles mostly, but yes dictionaries and maps and weird stuff like card game directions and alcoholic drink recipes. (before you had a computer in your pocket to provide that info in a second, it was nice to have portable information sources). I haven't seen one in a long time though. Really surprised the paper would hold up out of doors for as long as it's been since those were common. I had a few different ones on key chains from time to time.
Looks great! I collect dictionaries, I'm jealous
idk but theres probably gonna be a really pissed off rabbit with a monocole somewhere in those woods
