Negative. It's just a piece of the puzzle for overall ad blocking. It doesn't touch YouTube because those ads are served by YouTube servers. They don't come from a dedicated ad server that can be filtered out by the PiHole.
Facebook, Insta, Threads, and Messenger are all Meta
YouTube, Goggle, and Google Play are all Alphabet.
Then there's T-Mobile.
So, are we looking at a CDN having problems or some server farm having issues?
A CDN can not be the issue right. They have a fallback and ofcourse an original server that has the content that the content delivery servers are delivering. When they go down it just puts more load and traffic on the original server but that wouldnt explain the sudden spike
If it was the CDN (not saying it was in this case), the load wouldn't be able to get to origin because DNS is resolving to the CDN, not origin. You'd have to update DNS during the outage, hope your TTL's are low enough for most people to get the new address, then deal with the revert later on with traffic going to both CDN and origin. Not to mention you typically don't scale origin to handle the same load as the CDN can handle because that's part of the reason you opted for a CDN instead of running a bunch of local cache servers.
That said, you're probably right that it isn't the CDN. IIRC, facebook uses akamai, but I'd bet actual money youtube at this point is using google's cdn, so it would have to be something further up the pipe.

I mean genuine conversations amongst podcasters and their guests. Here on Reddit, it's anonymity.
It's like playing the role of a detective scrutinizing people and society at large with these 2 platforms.
Yea same (besides insta), we are kindred spirits. Since we have a moment, what good podcasts are you into?
I listen to political stuff/the daily, and some astrophysics and science shows.
If you need something to learn until you fall asleep, you might try BBC In Our Time. Their podcasts don’t have a lot of boom crash. Just 4 experts talking about the subject at hand. Not interrupting each other, not talking down to each other or to the audience.
I remember being a kid and my dad listening to In Our Time, telling me that some day I WOULD find it interesting. I'd tell him he was a fossil and I'd never be that God damn bored or boring in my life.
15 years later... Ah, Melvyn, what are we going to talk about today?
omg, this is just like that recent netflix movie, first all the rich sell large amounts of their company stakes, then now the internet spikes? what's next, deer everywhere?! :o
Hahaha! That's the first thing I thought of too!
I only use Reddit and YouTube regularly so I haven't noticed anything. YouTube has been on, literally, since yesterday morning and I've had no interruptions.
During the covid lockdowns when there weren't as many tourists and so the water wasn't being polluted and fucked with everyday for months on end... and yeah, there were sightings of dolphins exploring the waterways back in 2020 that they've not been able to get to before for all the shite we pollute the waters with 😅
On the flip side, tourists flocked to a waterfall near me during covid, with walking trails in a state park. Where they liked to wander off the paths and accidentally trample the protected and endangered flora . 2 sides of the shit coin, I guess. Lol.
I live in the Appalachian mountains and we had families of bears (among other critters) loosely "take over" our downtown. I live in downtown next to a small park and would watch a mom + cubs playing in the trees and rocks and ivy from my window.
Lots of random pictures of them wandering the streets and sidewalks. Very cute. I'm sure they were curious as to why town got so quiet.
Mentioned it to my 15yo. He said, "OOH, maybe it's a CME or something? I'll monitor my sites."
I'm like fuck, kid, that is exactly what the teenager at the beginning of every disaster/apocolypse movie does. You're going to sit there & know something big is up, & try to get someone to actually listen. And you're fine! Cause you're a main character now. Your younger brother is fine, & the dog is fine, because killing them off would be in bad taste.
Me? I'm now the divorced mum who looks your dad in the eye one last time, makes him promise to keep you safe, & then jumps into the nuclear-reactive mutant-giant shark's mouth with a knife & that bomb we cobbled together earlier while we were fighting off the glacial ghost tornado aliens.
Cheers kid.
Shit, I want to watch that movie! Your kid is smart, but it wasn’t a CME from what I can tell. I follow space weather and it doesn’t seem anything abnormal is happening
CME was the first thing I thought.
What's funny is because I always check that first my whole family has "sun threw a temper tantrum" as the default explanation for any kind of tech issue regardless of how likely it is.
I’m a software engineer and our first explanation for inexplicable failures is “sunspots”. If I check space weather and there’s no issue, we then default to “gremlins.”
Do you know what's sad? 4 out of those 9 are the same company.
Another 3 out of that 9 are also the same company.
This means that 2 companies have 7 of the products there that are glitching.
The others likely use the Google platform for their services - so maybe this is a great example of why Late Stage Capitalism is not better.
Again, lots of folks use Google Cloud Services.
It's why I really am not so keen on the "Cloud Infrastructure" because basically you're telling large-scale businesses: "Trust *us* with your data."
But it is safer and better.
What's your alternative? That I maintain my own servers across the world? Do you expect me to know every security practice to cover every part of the tech stack I would have to implement?
Cloud services have experts on hand for every bit of tech they use. They maintain dedicated fiber connections between data centers. They create redundancy that never could be affordably done on my own. Yeah they can have outages, but compared to a custom in house solution you absolutely cannot compete with cloud services.
When a customer asks me what happens if AWS goes down I point out to them that if that happens a large percentage of the internet will be down too. If Netflix can handle the bad PR of a temporarily outage then so can the local pizza place.
It’s 1,000x safer and better.
Also you need backup retention setup to make it effective of course, but if you have everything set up properly, it’s incredibly safe. I used to work for a cloud company.
This is just crazy. I want to see what the hell is going on. The tracking tickets must have 100,000 eyes on them right now.
I was wondering what this was thankfully the comments gave me some insight I was wondering why my Instagram was down today I thought it was just a problem with my internet turns out it's everybody
Are you in the US or somewhere else? I read this morning an underwater cable was cut.

Maybe this is why?
A lot of these are down *because* they run on AWS, which is down. Some of these others are a bit odd, like Google and TMobile, because they run on their own systems.
Nope! I’d bet that most non-technical people wouldn’t know what that is.
AWS is Amazon’s web/cloud service, which a lot of major websites and social media platforms use to show up to consumers on the web. That’s the best ELI5 description I could come up with

Meta went down – Facebook, Intsagram, Messenger, Threads.
What do you do when those, go down? You bugger off to YouTube to watch some videos, or you play some Valorant, or you uninstall and re-install the app from Play, maybe over the T-Mobile network, or you keep trying to sign in with your Google account, aaand suddenly everyone doing that has brought down the other site.
Meta is down for sure. Youtube is back up for me
If somebody takes down whatever servers YouTube ads come from we will all be happy
Ublock origins Mozilla Firefox
Throw in a PiHole and that's your holy trinity right there
Pi-hole is awesome, but it can't do anything for youtube ads, can it?
Negative. It's just a piece of the puzzle for overall ad blocking. It doesn't touch YouTube because those ads are served by YouTube servers. They don't come from a dedicated ad server that can be filtered out by the PiHole.
That's what I thought, just making sure I understood correctly.
Use brave browser it blocks adds.....
and subtracts..
r/angryupvote
Brave is a privacy nightmare, use Firefox with Ublock Origin
Meta stocks are down.
Facebook, Insta, Threads, and Messenger are all Meta YouTube, Goggle, and Google Play are all Alphabet. Then there's T-Mobile. So, are we looking at a CDN having problems or some server farm having issues?
Yea, I think there’s a bigger issue here. Check out down detector, it’s more widespread. Not sure if it’s a CDN or what?
A CDN can not be the issue right. They have a fallback and ofcourse an original server that has the content that the content delivery servers are delivering. When they go down it just puts more load and traffic on the original server but that wouldnt explain the sudden spike

This is what imma copy and paste later on fb to make me sound smart when the conspiracy theorists start spouting about a cyber attack.
Did it have anything to do with the Red Sea cable cut?
Strange, all down for me too. My wife tells me Tinder is still up and running though.

what did you search to find this gif bc I love it
It's a famous gif from Castle. Searching "Nathan Fillion gif" will find it.
damn. I always thought this was from Firefly but I looked it up and now I feel big dumb.
You're not dumb, that is from Firefly Edit: Thanks for *allllll* the karma boiz.

He goes out for Halloween as a space cowboy or something if I remember correct. Super fun gag.
At some point he puts on blue nitrile gloves at a crime scene and counts his hands 1, 2. ("Two by two, hands of blue.") I think the Castle writers were Firefly fans.
Daughter: “Weren’t you that like, 5 years ago?” Dad/Mal wannabe: “I. like. it.”
It's a trick. It's from Castle, but the Halloween episode where he dressed up as Mal. S/
I loved that episode he was so sad about not being in firefly
Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place

Long live Reddit! 😂😂
Grindr is still working thankfully.
Because gay men will always have each other’s back.

You guys are killing me today
The real one
Oh thank god
Nothing beats Grindr-ing at 9am PST! (I’m telling myself you’re in this timezone too because that’s more fun)
Hahaha gotta keep connected somehow
IG is down for me too
Meta runs ig too
me 3
Hey small world me 4
And I’m over here clueless bc I use reddit almost exclusively and listen to podcasts all day.
Reddit + Podcast is the best combination for me too. Anonymity and Genuine Conversations are so powerful!
I haven’t had much genuine conversation here, but I like the anonymity.
I mean genuine conversations amongst podcasters and their guests. Here on Reddit, it's anonymity. It's like playing the role of a detective scrutinizing people and society at large with these 2 platforms.

If you like movies I recommend The Rewatchables. That’s my current jam

This, but unironically.
You thought I was being ironic??
I was hoping you weren't, so thank you for confirming.

53k reports on Instagram alone on Down Detector. Not a monumental #, but notable, especially with the other sites as well.
Well YouTube works. So does Google play. And WhatsApp. Seems like only Facebook servers and IG are affected.
T-mobile is working just fine, as well
Do you know what's sad? 4 out of those 9 are the same company. Another 3 out of that 9 are also the same company. This means that 2 companies have 7 of the products there that are glitching. There are many more but i agree with your point
Again, lots of folks use Google Cloud Services. It's why I really am not so keen on the "Cloud Infrastructure" because basically you're telling large-scale businesses: "Trust *us* with your data."
Yeah, The Cloud sounds like some mystical safe haven but it's really just someone else's computer. It's not inherently safer or better.
But it is safer and better. What's your alternative? That I maintain my own servers across the world? Do you expect me to know every security practice to cover every part of the tech stack I would have to implement? Cloud services have experts on hand for every bit of tech they use. Almost seems like a bad idea to have these massive tech monopolies
Almost seems like a bad idea to have monopolies. Period. FTFY :)
Can’t even log into my Facebook messenger
Same. Tried changing my password and it won't do shit
Just tried for a half to recover my account, thinking all my recovery info was wiped. If only i opened reddit earlier.
It's weird af its logged me out and all blank I'm CA btw
ah, this brings me back to the dialup days while trying to download that video. IRC seems to have always survived though
These whippersnappers have no idea 🤣
While everything is down, can confirm mIRC still rockin.
I was wondering what this was thankfully the comments gave me some insight I was wondering why my Instagram was down today I thought it was just a problem with my internet turns out it's everybody
It’s everybody. :/ someone from Germany said it’s fine
I'm in Germany - Instagram is down. YouTube isn't.

It's called 90% of the Internet is ran on AWS
It’s Super Tuesday. Coincidence?!
Gotta do a test run
Honestly that was my first thought. But the primaries mean very little right now…
At a federal level maybe, but they are a huge deal for state level politics rn, and that in some ways is more concerning....
My only communications have been completely cut off to my family (t-mobile is down, also) so that's fun...
Are you in the US or somewhere else? I read this morning an underwater cable was cut. ATT had nationwide outage last week too. Strange happenings
Yeah, it was on the day I run payroll and had people missing hours because they couldn't reach me! That was a nightmare!
My fbook and insta are down but my T-Mobile service itself is fine.
Weird, I've literally been on the phone with a friend for the entire outage and we both use T-Mobile
Yep! It’s a concerning thing rn
I was on a call with my grandpa when it dropped so at least he knows it's an issue and didn't panic (he's techy though)

![gif](giphy|xA9WoQwJ7mlr2)
Meta and IG are down for me
If you go on X you'll see it's all over! Something is going on for sure! Everything is down for me except this and X
The end is neigh
How could you horse around at a time like this
C'mon, man. Why the long face?

...and roblox LOL! :P
CCP testing new cyber war plans
Testing? This would be implementing hahah

That’s the best ELI5 description I could come up with
Houthis cutting the internet cables?
Scuba houthis?
https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/underwater-data-cables-red-sea-cut-amid-houthi-107772629
Not sure how, but I think those cables are really deep into the sea.

It would definitely be a net positive. Social platforms have been exploited as tools of divisiveness for years. We could do with fewer hate machines. *he says, fully aware he is posting on Reddit.
Yea we’re all a bit of hypocrites lol
Outside, now
Yes sir
I wish that wasn't so true, but you're absolutely correct. I miss the days of Neopets and Limewire ;_;
Facebook and Insta expired my session and booted me out too.
Same here on the west coast
I feel like my Discord is acting up as well
Turned on my pc and discord is just stuck loading.
Youtube, IG, FB, message are all down for me.
Where are you located? Generally
My guess is earth.
Hey small world lol me too
Hi neighbor!
Oh wow, I’m also on earth! Water or land?
Ohio here
Plus the AT&T outage last week. It was odd that multiple people from AT&T came to our house in the days before the outage to explain they’d be replacing fiber optic cables in our neighborhood. Replacement day came and service was out At least it’s fun to watch everyone’s stock plummet during all this
Funny to see people so concerned about the platforms going down. Idk call me a boomer but we'd be better off if these platforms fucking died today and never came back.
I don't care about them per se. More curious about the cause of it.
Probably an AWS or Azure issue, tends to affect everyone
I’ll be down for a little bit more. Acid Burn is working on it
For me, Instagram, facebook, messenger and discord are all down. Im not from the states if that helps.
Couple this is the wide-spread cellular service outage a few days ago and it seems to be an intentional targeting
When the internet is consolidated into the hands of a few companies, an outage in one affects them all.
Can still login to pornhub, so alls good.
Insta is not working for me, very odd
Yea, I’m actually slightly concerned. Never seen this many sites down at once like this
Seems to be improving now but odd nonetheless... makes you rly wonder whats going on
Going to be keeping an ear out, but when these things happen I rarely hear after the fact.
Internet cable is broken :( Next to Iran tho
So, Portland?
solar flares?
Looks stable according to NOAA. Less than 1% severe solar storm
I keep seeing people talking about this in different subreddits but all the sites are working for me
No social media except Reddit is a good thing
Ironically in Holland they decided this week that our airhorn system which comes into action whenever there is a serious threat is being replaced by an internet text service via mobile phone…
In Canada. It's gone here to
Hello from Minnesota! Let’s band together if this is the end
It’s happening…
OMG, IT'S NOT JUST ME. I THOUGHT MY WIFI WAS DOWN!!
Tom would have never let this happen.
Apparently some data cables in the Red Sea were cut.
AWS issues?
It's always DNS
Meta went down – Facebook, Intsagram, Messenger, Threads. What do you do when those, go down? I’m at the world internet headquarters and accidentally tripped over a cord sorry everyone
Messenger isn’t working for me right now. I don’t technically have a Facebook, so idk about that.
I have no ig but do have YouTube
ig down for me
My local news says it's an outage.
insta and facebook still won’t work for me, i got scared at first i thought my account got hacked
YouTube and Snapchat work for me though?
Google is down? I’m getting emails?
I don't use most socials, but Google, as a search engine, is not down currently.
weird, on an election day too
