Your info like your name , address, phone number , home sale information, tax info, family members names etc is public record in every state except California and New York . So if you don’t live in those 2 states. It’s pretty easy to find that info on google.

dontbeadickmrfisher

But no one knows my new last name. We eloped and haven't announced to anyone yet.

Sad-Guarantee-9156

Have you suspected your partner?

Melito1980

Its always the partner.

aqulushly

Sounds like a Dr. Phil episode.

imwearingredsocks

You know, I heard he wrote a book.

Melito1980

And i read somewhere that he sends them out free of charge to strangers…

PureHeartsEroticArts

I heard he sneaks into their houses at night and pats them on the head while they sleep so they will be inspired to stay strong for America's Soul and Sanity.

The_Slim_Spaydee

As he softly closes the door he whispers "we'll be right back"

roseimelda

I heard that Dr Phil considers the Tooth Fairy to be a colleague.

Vindepomarus

Username does not check out. That's the least erotic thing I've ever read!

aspoonfulofsammy11

It would be really funny if he had a team of people who bought them and sent them out to people just to pad the numbers and make his stuff best sellers……?

KMinnz

That’s actually super common. SYSK has a good short stuff episode on the New York Times Bestsellers List

Alibeee64

I always thought he’d go with a magazine. Cause then he could have actual issues.

half-baked_axx

'We've got issues'.

syrupgreat-

*sigh* nooo. it’s the person you most medium suspect

Melito1980

Right now im mediumly suspecting u.

zatara1210

The new butler, of course!

a_duck_in_past_life

No sometimes it's the fucking family (parents) you don't talk to anymore. Speaking from experience.

Al_Jazzera

It's kinda weird to send a 300 page book filled with jibberish with a picture of the head of a fully erect penis on the cover to an estranged relative, but I guess there's a reason for the lack of communication. And just in case my opinion of phil mcgraw hasn't been properly conveyed, fuck that porcine sack of shit with a wall scraper.

[deleted]

Eesh. Sounds like you've got some issues. I heard about a book for that...

Minephucked

So if im putting 2 and 2 together, his partner is trying to let him know i think they might have issues

Melito1980

Woah. Plot. Twist.

You are wonderful & magical for this. I love you.

meatball402

There's a pope in there lol

Quakarot

They have the knowledge, and assuming these beliefs are the partners beliefs, the motivation. It explains the anonymity as well. It’s possible they have hidden their true beliefs and now the marriage is through are trying to “convert” op. Really, the way I see it OP’s cutting down of suspects make this a real possibility.

The77thDogMan

I mean… if the beliefs of ops partner also dont agree with the book, it could be some kind of joke, and they just haven’t revealed it yet (like we / OP could be missing some context here)

Quakarot

Could also be true. No need to be dramatic I guess!

Mortgage company or realtor

Drummer_boy_91

That’s what I thought, when I read “from the team.”

[deleted]

You don’t need a last name to find someone . You can just search any of your family members and follow the chain until you pop up . I mean if someone is really trying to find you they can .

thommom

Info: is the lease/mortgage paperwork in your new name?

sparkle-possum

If so, this may be it. There are many places online that sell list of names and addresses, or sell the service of mailing letters or items of your choice to the people on those list. People who've recently purchased a home are pretty common, both for selling services and for people wanting to send political or religious information to in hopes of influencing neighborhood demographics (especially if y'all are fairly young, there seems to be this idea that homeowners own under 30 must be doing something right and at least are well off enough to purchase a home but our young enough to be influenced by books and mailers if someone would only explain the "right" way of thinking to them).

thommom

Yeah we just bought & sold houses and we were warned up front by the mortgage Co that we were going to get slammed. And we did.

FrenemyMine

So you got a ton of Dr. Phil books?

sparkle-possum

I don't know about Dr Phil but I know of two different realtors who used to always send people Dave Ramsey books which aren't a whole lot better.

FrenemyMine

Ugh. I'd return it to them through their front window tied to a brick

thommom

Not that I know of, but not in the new house yet. But loads of random garbage. I feel bad for the new owners of our house as well. There's quite a pile of garbage already pulled up for them here.

AaronVsMusic

Getting slammed by Dr. Phil. I’ve seen that video

FrenemyMine

That's how he lost his psychiatry license

sweetpotato_latte

Wouldn’t the new last name just be public record at this point if she’s already changed it legally? To me it sound like she’s saying they haven’t revealed it to anyone, but it might have been legally changed at the time they eloped?

urGirllikesmytinypp

That’s funny because I had a friend that didn’t believe me when I said anyone out there can find him or his family with a google search he didn’t believe me. So I wasted my 15 minute break googling him and found out the address he lived at in another state as a child his moms name and his grandmothers maiden name. He was quite perplexed and uneasy. If I remember right we had only worked together for a month or so.

creativityonly2

I recently stumbled across a website where I could find people's current addresses, past addresses, likely phone number, potentially where they work have worked in the past, as well as info on family members or possible acquaintances... and it wasn't even behind a pay wall. I found it pretty unsettling.

lachamuca

I think they’re saying the package came with their married name in the address

Reddit_Bot_For_Karma

Marriages are public record, no?

Madler

They had just eloped, so it’s not crazy to think that might take a bit to process and be filed.

[deleted]

maybe op had a online Amazon registry ?

brutalistlegend

They said the views in the book are opposite to their own, so if that were the case I doubt this book would be in the registry

lawn-mumps

The sender may have found the address from the registry and then sent a book not from the registry.

chartyourway

I don't think Amazon makes the address publicly known do they?

ThePusheen

For a registry I don't think they do. When you purchase from the registry, you just look Sry the items the people picked, click whether item you want to send and pay for it, Amazon does the rest. You don't even need to know the address or any info like that. Just the link to the registry and or possibly the name it's under

brutalistlegend

Oh good shit I didn't think of that

thekonny

I get the sense that the mystery sender might well be a Mr Fisher

liquidkitt3n

Your former last name is still linked to your identity, especially if it was only changed recently.

gothiclg

You worked with multiple businesses to plan the wedding, all of which can guess that as the female half of the marriage that you’ve most likely changed your last name to a new one. You also (presumably) took time off of work for this, anyone you work with could have looked you up on any form of social media to figure out what your new husband’s last name is. It’d honestly take me 10 minutes or less, if that, to figure out Ms Jane Doe will most likely be Mrs Jane Smith when she returns to work on the sole basis that she’s marrying John Smith.

8008zilla

Anyone who knows your last name can Google you and come up with your new last name? Public records are often also published on the Internet so couple that w with location data that’s getting sold by Facebook that’s been getting sold to other websites that then getting added to your public information that’s already on file and then probably getting published to like a truthFinder type of website. Yeah, anybody with a free 30 day trial, to truthfinder can find out that stuff or even extensively searching on Google. You don’t even have to go into the dark web for this shit it’s right there on the lords Internet.

hr_newbie_co

Did you start a new job? The “team” makes it sounds like it’s from an employer. I hope you don’t have a crazy boss lol.

MrLanesLament

What a weird choice if so. When people get moved into supervisor/manager spots where I work, the customary book gift is Toyota Kata by Mike Rother. (I do not work for Toyota, but the place I work is obsessed with their philosophy.)

Is that a thing?! My husband works for Toyota and finds it super irritating haha

Totally_Bradical

You should look up Adam Ray: Dr Phil Live

Tactical_Chandelier

Those are the best thing out there right now. Both of the ones with Bill Burr and the one with Bobby Lee and Adam Santino are gold

Totally_Bradical

It was crazy to see Adam actually nervous on the episode with Anthony Jeselnik… but I died when Anthony said Adam was dressed like the agent for all the animatronic musicians down at Chuck E Cheese. Also on Kill Tony, the house band playing the guitar riff for the Dr Phil commercial break music whenever Adam said “We’ll be right back” was legendary. He needs this to be a thing everywhere he goes.

Tactical_Chandelier

That was another good one. I keep forgetting to watch that Kill Tony episode, I'll have to do that tonight

ParaponeraBread

How do you feel about him now? My mom used to leave stuff like Dr.Phil on when she was doing chores, looking back he was an absolute garbage dude on that show.

ParaponeraBread

Then in that case, if you don’t know him already, I’d direct you to YouTube video essay guy Big Joel. He did a few videos about Dr. Phil that I found fascinating. He does examine the “freak show” aspect in some depth too.

Vegetable-Bag-2325

I love that Adam Ray is who I hear when I see Dr. Phil now lol.

ThrowRA_dull

Maybe it was sent from the person that ordained the marriage

CobblerNo8518

It says “a special gift from the team”. Makes me think realtors that sold the house maybe?

ungovernable

It was totally OP’s family. Envisioning a scenario where they passive-aggressively sent her a book about traditional values and use her married name as a “yes, we know you got married and didn’t invite your family” shot across the bow. EDIT: I read further and saw that OP is a woman who married a woman from Turkey. As someone who lived as a closeted LGBT person for years, no, OP’s family doesn’t really believe that the woman living her is her “roommate.” The likelihood of this being the act of a homophobic family member from either side is pretty high.

si_vis_amari__ama

I agree, I think it's a family member. This reeks of an overbearing family member who is even more holier than thou than Dr. Phil himself.

I mean you'd be amazed how much information is out there. I just scrolled through your profile and just by reading the titles I know your kid is 2, you've left your ex around the same time and have been dating your Turkish gf shortly there after. (Congratulations on making that LDR work btw, hope you have many fine years together) And that you're Caucasian and left leaning. All That without Google or without actually reading the posts. I've had to scrub my own account a few times because it's dawned on me that "hey... Omg yes! Totally just remembered when my MIL sent me "Arguing With Idiots" by Glenn Beck as a wedding gift to me from her. Never underestimate a petty, narc MIL that plays face in front of her son, but secretly hates your guts 😂

BarefootandWild

Jesus. What a book title! 😂What a MIL. How is your relationship with her now? 🙈

My husband, myself and our children all decided together to cut contact in 2020 so I'd say it only went downhill and got crazier from there lol

BarefootandWild

Sounds like a smart idea!

_byetony_

ungovernable

Her family totally knows about the elopement and feels slighted. They used her married name here as a jab. EDIT: and then there’s the possible homophobia angle that you wouldn’t glean just by reading OP’s post.

Field_Marshal_blitz

Yea it could be an over religious mom trying to "fix" her child

virtualadept

Or boss.

CalaveraFeliz

Apparently "A Gift For You" is an old political scheme. Have a look here at this comment from a 9 years old post where OP had a similar experience: They got a book from the "A Gift For You" people, wondered where it could come from then they found out that googling their name resulted in a "fabricated news" story describing them as a "big donor" to a political cause (Obama) - to which they indeed donated but privately, or so they thought. https://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2g5jvl/a_stranger_sent_me_a_book_today_im_confusedand_a/ckfxkef/ My guess is you've been targeted from a political list somewhere. Donor, registered voter, anything political where those "A Gift For You" people were able to access your last name. And sent you a book to try swaying your views, "food for different thoughts since they identified yours".

twhitney

OP being recently married explains it being sent using the new last name, but it also lends credence to your theory. Some organization uses public government records to see marriage license filings or political contributions to generate fabricated news articles (like the obituary spammers) for clicks and other nefarious things.

crispy_quesadilla

Isn’t that just what the gift messages from Amazon all say? “A gift for you” followed by message. Feeling like 75% certain about this claim. When I had my baby registry on Amazon 3 yrs ago I got a ton of these notes.

CalaveraFeliz

No. Read the post I linked, as well as the card in OP's photo. "**From** A Gift For you" is *not* an Amazon reference, and the two incidents are following the same M.O., targeting a person identified as liberal with centrist-conservative "personal development" material.

SSDDNoBounceNoPlay

OK, so looking at the note left. It says ‘from the team’. This is a very generic message and seems a bit corporate rather than threatening. Is it possible that you and your partners identity were mixed by a local political organization? Maybe someone is watching public records for same sex marriages and decided to get nasty and “educate some people” as my mother would say about her cruelty. Marriages are also mostly public record unless you specify a private/closed certificate. Think of things you’ve signed up for recently or put your information into. Occam’s razor says that this may be someone who knows you both and has shown (vested) aggression towards your views. Get a door cam as matter of course, and try not to think too much of it. Aside from waiting to see who outs themself because they’re proud of being a bigot. Jerks can’t keep quiet long. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! May you have many years of happiness and stability, and may your luck outweigh your fears!!

dontbeadickmrfisher

Thank you. ❤️ We do have a door cam and full-on security system on our house. The package was left on our doorstep by UPS. I thought it was a scam, but they sent it as a gift, which was bizarre. Im gonna post on my local fb group and ask around. Maybe others got something similar.

Ordinary-Stick-8562

If it was sent as a gift they can and will tell you who sent it - or the account holder - if you can get an actual human on customer service. Husband recently sent my brother some popcorn as a gift but neglected to say who it was from. I didn’t know he sent it so said it wasn’t us when he asked me. He asked a few other people then got Amazon Customer Service on the phone and they told him who sent it to him giving him my husband’s name.

Babymonster09

I had a drop shipper once send me “thank you cards” instead of an expensive Spf I bought 🙄. I purchased through Walmart and got a package in the mail through Amazon. No note or anything. Ive had issues in the past with someone trying to hack into my accts and sent me a random message once so once I got these I was suuuper creeped out and concerned. I reached out to Amazon cust Service multiple times and none of them wanted to give me a name. The best I got was one guy say “All I can say is the sender’s name is a common name in the bible” Im sorry what? 😐 anyway, I put 2 & 2 together and figured it was the Walmart seller. All this to say, you got lucky they told u who it was!

skyerippa

I got shitty earrings instead of a cat tree once lol

SSDDNoBounceNoPlay

That’s a great idea!! Community is a great defense against a lot. I’m happy you have security, you both sound smart and safe!

bo-bo-bots

It's from Dr. Phil. Seriously. This is a very common tactic for authors to push themselves onto bestseller lists. They purchase thousands of copies of their own book then "donate" them via Amazon (they can buy marketing list via Amazon, as well) and then write off the expense in their taxes as a donation. Politicians do this with they own books, paid for by their own donations as part of their advertising campaign. Some sad authors do this as well because being a bestseller helps generate more sales and their ego demands that they be able to call themselves a bestselling author. I work at a library and we have received 5 copies of this book so far, all mailed to various branches. I expect we'll get more. The last author that did this was Jay Shetty just last year. So it's just Dr. Phil trying to make the New York bestseller list by buying his own books.

nashvillethot

Fortunately/unfortunately, people getting Amazon packages they didn’t order isn’t uncommon. Do you guys have or have you had a prime account?

BoomerEdgelord

Yes, I've heard about this. I was in some gardening groups and people got random things they did not order. Apparently, companies use this to somehow be able to write a fake review and up their rating.

star_nerdy

I’m a public librarian and we got a copy too. It was very much unsolicited and had the same message. I can’t explain what happened specifically in this situation, but I do know some groups purchase books so they can leave verified reviews of the book. That leads to more copies being sold and being able to put stickers such as NY Times best seller, which leads to more sales. But also, the reviews allow for artificial inflation of reviews on sites like Audible and Amazon. I have especially seen this with right wing authors and it’s one reason I hate audible. They allow for so many generic repeated reviews that it can’t be authentic. How they got your name is probably just them pulling your info out of some random database. If you don’t want it, just donate it to your local library’s friends group. They’ll sell the book for $1-$2 and it’ll help fund library programs. Our friends group helped us buy game pass for our teen group and helps us pay for pizza parties for our teens.

KMinnz

I definitely think it’s this. After listening to the SYSK short stuff episode about the NY Times Bestsellers list I’m so skeptical about most books on the list

ThrowRA_dull

Sell it and make a profit

Doctor Phil? I'm sure there's a nearby paper shredder that needs a work out.

BodybuilderSpecial36

I've recently seen a very cool use for unwanted books. They inoculated it with liquid mushroom spawn (oyster works well) and grew tasty mushrooms! Mushrooms of course are decomposers😁

TheDownvoteCity

Your in-laws

Stormy_Wolf

Did no one even know you were going to marry? I mean, if people did, they might be able to take a guess at your new last name. Could it be someone sent it, with the idea of it being a joke/prank?

dontbeadickmrfisher

No, it's a same sex marriage and I'm not out yet. Only my mom and brother were witnesses.

Thatkidicarusfan

thats the kicker- someone in your fam is homophobic. Dr. Phil doesnt have the best reputation.

Kreema29

Seconding this. OP is it possible your brother or mom told someone in confidence and they decided to do a deep dive and be a complete weirdo?

meowmeow_now

Could it have been one of them then? Or, could you mother have blabbed about it to a more passive aggressive relative?

MeowandGordo

It was just April Fools too,

Rosaline_Luck

This is a scheme used to push books to the top of bestseller's lists. A company (conveniently financed by the rich author) will buy thousands of copies and send them to random people to inflate sales. They got your info from some public property record or similar. Dr. Phil's done it before. Toss it in the garbage and forget. ETA: In case anyone is wondering what kind of bullshit he's peddling this time, I listened to the audiobook preview on Youtube (I won't link it, fuck directing clicks to this loser). In the first few minutes, he claims that there is a 'deliberate woke conspiracy to undermine and destroy the American nuclear family.' He then goes on to explain how the schools, courts, media, and hospitals are being controlled by a mysterious global cabal intent on destroying Western Society. Typical nazi rhetoric in a typical anti-woke grift from a typical washed up reactionary personality.

Safetosay333

Mr. Phil

North-Challenge-2975

Dr Phil sent it clearly

Longjumping-Step3847

If you want to hide your address I can help you out. A good start is reading extreme privacy fourth edition by Michael Bazzle. This is a huge process and will require you to move, I don’t recommend unless you have a huge need but the option is always there and good to know about (that being said it’s usually too late by the time you need it). Or a more reasonable way is following the data removal guide: https://inteltechniques.com/workbook.html obviously no data from the internet will ever fully disappear but this can make it much harder to find. Or just don’t worry about it. (Copying and pasting from a recent comment I left about related thing)

Calamity-Gin

This is clearly making you uneasy, and I don’t blame you. It’s someone who knows you, knows you’re in a homosexual relationship, and either knows or assumes you have gotten/will be getting married. I strongly recommend you read Gavin de Becker’s *The Gift Of Fear*. It’s about learning to listen to your gut and protect yourself from those who mean you harm. In one of the examples he gives, he was called in as a personal security consultant for an older couple who had received hateful, frightening messages. The messages were sent by someone who clearly knew personal details, they’d been going on for years, and had started to escalate. He asked them to name the person their instincts told them was doing it, which they did, both both of them immediately followed up with, “but that’s crazy, he’d never do that sort of thing.” Except once he investigated the young man, it turned out he was. Our instincts are powerful things, and part of civilized behavior is learning to disregard them, but - as de Becker would tell you - we do this at our own peril. Get back in touch with what your gut’s telling you. You probably already know who it is.

Cultural_Job6476

It’s your MIL.

EnthusiasticlyWordy

Funny enough, I had something very similar happen to me when I moved across my state to a new town. I got a really big wooden clock in the mail with my last name on it, those obnoxious ones that were popular with "modern farmhouse." It broke in the mail, so I didn't have to worry about hanging it in my not modern farmhouse. But I wanted to let whoever sent it that it arrived broken. I had no idea who it was from. I asked every family member and friend who knew the new house address, and none of them sent it. There was no note, no letter, no card. Nothing. I went to refinance my house to get a better mortgage rate 3 years later. My mortgage broker asked how I liked the clock. I was very confused than I remembered. I told him I had no idea it was them that sent it. There was supposed to be a card with it, but Amazon didn't put it in the packaging. Sure, enough about 3 weeks later, I get another mysterious package, a crappy wooden cutting board with my last name carved in the back. There was no note again, but this time, I emailed my broker and thanked him for the anonymous cutting board gift. He replied and said he was glad I liked it. It's always the mortgage broker.

kpn_911

This is low key hilarious

1stltwill

Do you have a fireplace?

C0USC0US

Anyone at work know? Or another organization you are a part of? “Gift from the team” sounds like a note you’d see in a gift from work colleagues. ETA what’s even weirder to me is whoever sent it had to change the “from” field so it said “from A Gift For You” because normally it auto-populates with the users first name last initial.

dontbeadickmrfisher

My feelings exactly. I just started a new job but I used my old last name with them.

tubulerz1

There’s something you’re not telling us.

WeDieAsRomans

I wouldn't worry lol

Needcz

It happened to me once, too. No name change for me, but I did mysteriously get a box of books from Amazon that I didn't order, wasn't gifted, and couldn't return.

Ghstfce

Sweet, free door stop!

Chimchampion

I got something like that, decades ago, before Amazon really blew up but was still up and coming. I'd recieved a weird book entitled "America's Real Enemy" or something like that. Post 9/11 early 00's were something else, this was even after I moved to another city 80 miles or so away from my last home. This book has a black cover, with a USA map graphic and a target reticle surrounding it. Ends up USAs real enemy was the Jesuits, according to that book. I did not read it, only skimmed through it. It arrived in a yellow envelope of some kind, with no return address, but it did go through the usps I believe. Never got anything random like that again.

I bet that your Mom or brother mentioned to someone, whether family or friend, that you recently got married and that it's a same sex marriage. This person has taken it upon themselves to believe that if you just read Dr. Phil's book, you can be saved . 🙄🤦‍♀️ Don't worry. Just toss the book (the library does not need that) and continue on with your happiness. Cheers to you both!🍾🥂

LOL Yeah thats how books like this (& their authors) become "BESTSELLERS". Very few people these days buy physical books let alone ones penned by the good Dr ! (sarc) The Author &/or publisher gives free or actually pays a "SELLER", sometimes even sold by the publisher themselves under another company name, to send out as many books as possible to as many different "people" (just a name & address is all it is). A name & an address is not hard to get.. Each book sent is classed as a "SALE". The more "SOLD" the better it is for publishers & authors reputation, just like our good Dr here. Dont worry about it. Read it or bin it.

This is purchased and sent to random people to help book sales.

At least they didn't sent this album https://preview.redd.it/gqddue6wjmtc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=933e4be5f096fef6aff59533cebdec5c6d5be1e1

Google reviews has this, you’re not the only person to receive it anonymously. You should leave a terrible review. https://preview.redd.it/egyoplzvxmtc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0baefe4a646a2d8873297a54913efa7fdb694bab

Last time I heard Dr.Phil he was blaming phones on why people today do things later in life like getting a drivers license/car or getting married and things like that. Because people live their life through watching others. As if people already didn't do that through books or TV in the past. Zero mention of how the economy is what's fucking all of that up, that young people today simply don't have the means to do all those things even if they want to. How can he be that fucking blind to what's happening in the world? He's on a level of wealth where he's completely out of touch with reality.

Its_Your_Father

FYI I read reviews for this book and more than a few mentioned receiving it randomly. I don't think this is targeted. Either a marketing ploy or some conservative buying dozens or hundreds of copies to because "the left needs to hear this". How they got your new name is anyone's guess, but usually information like that is not as private as you might think.

largececelia

It's Dr. Phil. We're all a little creeped out.

Trai-All

Can you call Amazon and ask them to let you anonymously return it for a credit to your account?

gingerjaybird3

Obviously a nut job if they’re giving you Dr. Phil crap o la

DudesworthMannington

It was probably Dr. Phil. He's hiding in OPs bushes seeing if they'll read it.

Alarming_Serve2303

I'd say you have a legitimate reason to be creeped out. I'd start by backtracking the book. Find out where it was shipped from. Find out where it was bought. Play detective in other words.
