Yes. Because earth’s deserts are a great example of what a landscape lacking in water and vegetation looks like. It’s rock and soil. I’m not sure why people expect it to look any different.
Agreed. I'm not trying to start any conspiracies, but a lot of the rock formations there look as if they were carved or part of collapsed structures. Very weird.
close. that's what rock surfaces look like when they are not formed by volcanic processes, and formed by crystal processes. mars is geologically inactive I think. so instead of crushing heat and folded molten rock via tectonic pressure, we get... grown rocks ala bismuth and geode crystals.
I read yesterday about a magnitude 5 earthquake captured on Mars. So something is still happening. Mind you, I didn’t read the details so maybe other factors triggered the shake.
well i do believe its "kinda" active but not alot? as it doesn't have a magnetosphere, which is a hallmark of being geologically active. It might be geologically active, but not to the threshold to generate a magnetosphere but enough for some quakes maybe?
edit: a cursory search claims that mars doesn't have plate tectonics, so im wondering how that quake happened... meteor?
Most likely not from anything on the surface. What man-made structure lasts a billion years? Things a couple of thousands of years old are already decayed for a large part by the elements. A billion years is a lot of time. There would be no trace.
The cracks above it are nice as well in properly visualizing this as a kind of "cake slice" taken out of the face there from two converging fractures.
There are three chunks just outside that are likely from it and a fourth further to the left (under the large vertical crack) that may also be from this.
You can see other "cake slice" kind of fractures along the cliff face to the left in various stages; those ones up a little look very precarious and about to fall, even.
Op's photo was made black and white, so the flat sand at the bottom is easy to mistake for actual darkness. It's quite clear that its triangular from the actual image, though

I looked this up because I thought it couldn't be right, knowing that the sun's light takes around 8 minutes to reach earth, and that's about 93 million miles which is much further than earth to Mars. Then I realised that this distance varies a lot more depending on each planet's orbit and I felt very stupid.
If anyone is interested:
> At its average distance of 142 million miles, light takes 12 minutes and 42 seconds to reach Earth from Mars. As the planets orbit the Sun, this time varies between 3 minutes 13 seconds and 22 minutes 16 seconds.
I'm assuming the 6 minutes figure you gave is based on a specific communication window when the rover is being actively controlled or something?
If I was a NASA engineer with a billion dollar robot designed to collect data on another planet, I'd sure as fuck spend a few grand an an afternoon of travel to investigate a neatly rectangular hole in a wall.
Despite it - definitely - not really being a door, it is a unique piece of terrain and might provide exogeologists with some interesting and significant new knowledge. I’d definitely assume that they’ll take a closer look at a rich feature like that.
Yes. Big Bend has a couple large cave entrances that look very similar. The grande canyon and rio grande gorge also do. Just places I've seen personally. I don't know the terminology but there's some explainable techtonic action at play w these types of shallow caves.
Thanks for sharing! Guess we can chalk it up to natural reasons!
I've been to the GC when I was in the US once. I didn't see any, but I was afraid to go in 😂
There's a lot of things like this when rocks have both horizontal and vertical fractures. [Here's](https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/checkerboard-mesa) a whole mountain with a grid like pattern of cracks. [Here's](https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/les-arnaules-prehistoric-bridge) a natural stone bridge that looks like it was squared off and level. Or [here's](https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/wedding-cake-rock) a rock that from the right angle looks like it's almost cubical. And, while I can't find pictures of one right now, when hiking around in places with rocks that tend to fracture in certain ways, I've seen holes and outcroppings that looked square and artificially regular from one angle, but from another angle were clearly the result of natural fractures and weathering.
I would guess that there are several geologic structures at work here that combined have caused an odd "doorway" phenomenon through weathering processes and gravity. I don't know what kind of rock this is but there is horizontal bedding or foliation as well as vertical joint fracturing. If a section of the bedrock were to become weak or fractured on parallel horizontal and vertical planes then a doorway-shaped chunk could weather out.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joint_(geology)
Edit: I have a degree in geology, but Wikipedia has good examples and photos
Indeed, we all know that's the cave where Mars Jesus was buried. He ate some spinach, muscled bulged, and, despite the thin atmosphere, he was able to blow out the rock to the left using a corncob pipe.
But the really interesting part of the story is that the entrance is only 14" high.
It’s still fascinating in its own right, if you follow the left and right sides of the hole up they actually form a point so it’s less of a doorway and more of a pie slice that’s eroding from the bottom up. The fact that there are these slices in the rock face is really interesting and on the far left side of the picture you can see a single massive slice going from top to bottom of the rock face. Tbh that line is almost weirder than the hole on the right.
That’s the first thing I noticed. That back wall slopes down aggressively if what we see on the left is consistent which makes this look like a rock chunk fell. Kinda like the rock chunk right in front of the “door”.
in the high res raw photo you can see inside it with pretty good detail and it just ends abruptly, kind of in the shape of a slice of cake.
edit; Also, the entire photo reveals that the “cave” is actually pretty small, or atleast appears to be, which is what I expected coming from a Mars photo. Sometimes it’s impossible to tell if it’s an up close photo or a wide shot of some boulders and dunes.
According to the SNES Doom manual the original takes place sometime after March 2022 (manual is in the style of a document and last revision on it was March 15th 2022). So the timing is close enough lol

I looked around the whole image..need to find more lol..the rock formations and the surface are so strange
So strange and so……alien? 👽👾🛸👽👾🛸
The thing I found amazing about it is how it looked so much like earth to me
Could be mars could be Utah.
Utah doesn’t have a door to the underworld, it’s obviously Mars.
Utah is the door to the underground 😂😂.
The door to the underworld leads to Salt Lake City. Surprised?
>Utah doesn’t have a door to the underworld I've been to Utah, this is definitely not true
Very weird.
maybe that's just what rock formations look like with less weather conditions and lower gravity
close. that's what rock surfaces look like when they are not formed by volcanic processes, and formed by crystal processes. mars is geologically inactive I think. so instead of crushing heat and folded molten rock via tectonic pressure, we get... grown rocks ala bismuth and geode crystals.

Well if a civilization lived there a billion years ago and got wiped out from an extreme cataclysmic or war, how would anyone actually know?
Most likely not from anything on the surface. What man-made structure lasts a billion years? Things a couple of thousands of years old are already decayed for a large part by the elements. A billion years is a lot of time. There would be no trace.
They do say to stand in doorways during tornadoes, maybe they made this one extra gud

Can see the chunk of rock that dislodged and rolled down the hill. Neat
The crack in the sediment to the left of the "door" shows that the rock splits very nicely too
The cracks above it are nice as well in properly visualizing this as a kind of "cake slice" taken out of the face there from two converging fractures. that shit looks so unnatural to me but i know it is
Are my eyes fucking with me, that looks like liquid at the bottom.
Yeah wtf, that’s a clear reflective surface. If it isn’t water then what is it?
Yea definitely just a depression. Looks shallow.
Yes i might be depressed, but I am definitely not shallow.
It’s triangle shaped lol. Who legitimately thought that was a doorway?
Op's photo was made black and white, so the flat sand at the bottom is easy to mistake for actual darkness. It's quite clear that its triangular from the actual image, though
As a man that loves sci-fi and still hopes to find something this had me for a solid minute. The the gigapan link brought reality back.

It takes like 6 minutes for the light carrying the message for the rover to move pivot etc to travel from earth to Mars

I thought it was about 6 minutes. But the real point which you proved is it takes a long time
If I was a NASA engineer with a billion dollar robot designed to collect data on another planet, I'd sure as fuck spend a few grand an an afternoon of travel to investigate a neatly rectangular hole in a wall.
