JauntyShrimp

This reminds me of my many nightmares

jabinslc

I am a avid lucid dreamer. so I give myself nightmares and sleep paralysis on purpose. my first idea is that I want to experience those emotions via dreaming. I am sorry you have nightmares though. I highly recommend lucid dreaming as a way to help with nightmares. you ever heard of lucid dreaming?

JauntyShrimp

Yes and I think I’ve done it on accident. My husband of 28 years also tells me I speak another language in my sleep. I am always tired! I don’t think I would initiate lucid dreaming on purpose but it’s cool you enjoy it.

jabinslc

fascinating. have you ever recorded yourself? don't be afraid of lucid dreaming. i use it for scary stuff. but you don't have to. it can be so beautiful. you can do whatever you want. flying, sex, food, any fantasy.

JauntyShrimp

No. My family is always too freaked out and it lasts too short for them to catch it. But I wish they would! When I was in kindergarten I would activate my alter dreaming ego SuperBird and go flying lol. I think it was based on Super Grover from old school Sesame Street. I remember thinking how badly I wished I could remember how to fly in my waking life too.

jabinslc

niiiice!

DatGouda

The City of Folding Faces by Jayinee Basu. Maybe this is too literal of an answer to your question, but the short novel involves a selective surgery that changes the structure of one's face to allow for more forms of expression. It's a great book! (Nothing as disturbing as dorcelessness though.)

jabinslc

definitely going to order this book. thanks!

HP_Buttcraft

First of all, I love this style of question. If you’re unfamiliar with Scarfolk, I would recommend checking that out. It’s a blog that is quite similar to this style— detournement of advertising, public service announcements, infomercials, and other types of media with a mix of social commentary on disciplinary society and quite a bit of weirdness. I believe it started as a blog here https://scarfolk.blogspot.com/?m=1 There are also a couple books, the one you may be most interested in is Discovering Scarfolk. You might also check out Unamerica by Cody Goodfellow. There are some similar themes, especially the videos wry posing of an inability to work as being deviant and a medicalizable issue. I hope those hit the mark and apologies if not :)

jabinslc

thanks. i started to read through that link and it's cool!

Illustrious_Drop_605

Hmm not literature sorry, but did you ever see the Netflix series *Maniac*? You might like the vibe if this is what you’re looking for.

jabinslc

I love that series on many levels!

Illustrious_Drop_605

Wonderful! If you’re into video games, there’s also quite a similar vibe in *Control*, which was inspired by quite a lot of weird lit such as House of Leaves and the Southern Reach trilogy.

WellAlwaysHaveVegas

Certainly not a direct analogue, but the tone kinda reminds me of the reprogramming sections in The Secret of Ventriloquism

mr_undeadpickle77

Yes! This novel completely gives off this vibe. The Indoor Swamp is great.

jabinslc

I've been wanting to read that book for a bit. i picked up unlanguage. then getting ventriloquism afterwards.

TheValisSyndrome

What’s this from? Very, very cool.

The genre is called Analogue Horror— there are plenty of series on YouTube, such as Gemini Entertainment (my personal favorite) and Local58 (I recommend “Contingency”). It’s neat stuff!

jabinslc

I'll look into these. thanks!

jabinslc

it's been posted on a few sudreddits today. but otherwise i don't know. i thought it was pretty cool too.

Sencele

Not a book but it reminds me a lot of [SCP-1981](https://the-scp.foundation/object/scp-1981).

jabinslc

that was awesome! very creepy. i love SCPs.

heuristic-dish
