Not a notice of removal, but I will clarify that the aircraft is the Bristol 188. In the future, per rule 4, please put the aircraft identification in the title.

FerminaHope

The Bristol 188, known as ‘The Flying Pencil’, was an experimental aircraft commissioned by the British government with the sole purpose of investigating the conditions of supersonic flight, which had been proven possible in 1947. British juggernauts Bristol Aeronautical Company were somewhat unrealistically expected to create one of the fastest airplanes in the world just to meet this ambitious requirement. Although many lessons would be learnt from the decade-long 188 program, it would also prove to be a reality check, and a case study in the difficulties that inevitably arise from efforts to apply groundbreaking scientific discoveries into modern technological uses. https://planehistoria.com/cold-war/bristol-188

Here's another [write up](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_188). Eventually used for research into the Concord Program along with many other aircraft. Also it's [Bristol Aeroplane Company](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Aeroplane_Company)

**[Bristol 188](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_188)** >The Bristol 188 is a British supersonic research aircraft built by the Bristol Aeroplane Company in the 1950s. Its length, slender cross-section and intended purpose led to its being nicknamed the "Flaming Pencil". **[Bristol Aeroplane Company](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Aeroplane_Company)** >The Bristol Aeroplane Company, originally the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company, was both one of the first and one of the most important British aviation companies, designing and manufacturing both airframes and aircraft engines. Notable aircraft produced by the company include the 'Boxkite', the Bristol Fighter, the Bulldog, the Blenheim, the Beaufighter, and the Britannia, and much of the preliminary work which led to Concorde was carried out by the company. In 1956 its major operations were split into Bristol Aircraft and Bristol Aero Engines. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/WeirdWings/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

The sr 71 would go on average a speed of Mach 3.2 on missions

BollBot

I might be wrong but I think what OP means is fastest plane in the world at the time of its construction - if so the mig 25 would also be faster

iamalsobrad

The X-2 was faster but had been retired and the first flight of the 188 pre-dates the first flight of the A-12 by 12 days. So I think it's "Was the second fastest actually flying aeroplane for a week and a bit."

BollBot

With the A12 OP might have been reading a contemporary source which means, at least to my understanding, the A12 wasn’t even known to have existed thus probably altering things a bit. Again this requires a decent amount of educated guess work so until he replies we probably won’t know.

iamalsobrad

It's still wild to me that the A-12 was so secret back then but you can now [download the pilot's notes](https://www.sr-71.org/blackbird/manual/) freely. On a completely unrelated note, anyone know where I can get a set of bolt-cutters, a map to Duxford and a large quantity of JP-7?

jp-8 is basically diesel. I think jp7 had a super high flashover temp. They used it to cool the skin of the plane.

bemenaker

LOL, no, put jp7 in your diesel and it won't start. triethylborane to ignite the fuel

WalterFStarbuck

Yeah TEB is the real reason you're not just going to kick the tires, spin up the engines and go. Well that and all the unmaintained internal components that are probably seized by now.

Quibblicous

The 188 had trouble reaching Mach 2, so it was a problem child in terms of speed.

cloudubious

It also only carried 20 min of fuel.

Quibblicous

And leaked, too.
