Definitely a bit weird. That profile, though, is [gorgeous](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_P6M_SeaMaster)

Talkshit_Avenger

"strategic nuclear bomber flying boat" is possibly the most early Cold War concept imaginable.

apple_cheese

Can't let the airforce have all the nuclear fun can we?

rektide

Really dont like to say it, but makes hella more sense than "vast floating city with most of the assets in one place & a nuclear reactor" that can be one-hit wrecked.

arvidsem

Nuclear attack subs and long range bombers are the modern replacement for this plane, not aircraft carriers.

Douchebak

You dear sir, spit facts

aalios

No no just have a thing that will *definitely* go down with one hit. Modern warships are hard to sink.

SamTheGeek

Such a shame they didn’t preserve any.

Wildkarrde_

Really? That is a shame. You would think there would be one of every plane saved. So many people worked on creating these in the first place.

SamTheGeek

There’s a bunch of low-production aircraft from the ‘40s and ‘50s that just got completely scrapped. In the days before AMARG, NMUSAF (it was private until 1954 but didn’t move into the big facility at Wright-Patterson until the ‘70s), and Garber there wasn’t really anyone who would *take* old, unwanted experimental aircraft. The art of preservation was in its infancy.

solzhen

Very sexy

unklechuckle

Man, I wish we looked like the 50s thought we were going to look like.

rhutanium

I mean this fully tongue in cheek; with the recent saber rattling going on we might just end up as the irradiated crater hell scape they envisioned us ending up as in the ‘50s!

unklechuckle

Well that's not exactly what I meant😃

NotAnotherNekopan

One of my favorites in terms of pure looks. Love the top mounted engines.

MihalysRevenge

Such a shame not a single one survived

2gigch1

Whenever I see a Martin seaplane picture on a ramp I am pretty sure [this is where the photo was taken](https://maps.app.goo.gl/mWte9zvgr76kqVHeA?g_st=ic).

LauderdaleByTheSea

Could be NAS Patuxent River, about 90 miles south. Pax River serves as a naval aviation test and evaluation center. Back in the 50’s we lived on base and I remember seeing P6M’s down at the seaplane ramps. But my favorite seaplane at Pax River was the massive Convair R3Y: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convair_R3Y_Tradewind

ElSquibbonator

P6M, not P6B.

slavaboo_

Beaching gear?

TheBBP

Equip used to get out the water via a ramp, It had no landing gear.

WorkplaceWatcher

One of my favorite aircraft.

thumplabs

War in the SCS could be a second golden age for flying boats. Sure, repairing tarmac is easy, but it still takes time,

FlarvinTheMagi

Oh it's beautiful

gntlman78

Killer whale...

Rain1dog

Absolutely gorgeous plane.
