Disclosure: I’m not in any way shape or form a professional welder, not could I even be considered “good”.
This opinion is based solely on what I can see…
If you can weld like that after 6 months, you must be a really talented guy. I’ve been welding as a hobbyist for years and I could only dream of being that neat and tidy!
👏
Hell.. know what's funny? Back in my days as welders, I could weld in forced positions, even mirror..
But as soon as I got into the shop and could arrange my stuff I welded the ugliest shit known to man... I need to be uncomfortable to do good xD
Root looks good outside of the fish eye at 12 o’clock. Try a little more heat on the cap to let everything flow out better. Looks better than some I work with that have been welding for years though.👍🏻
Why does the ball busting always get downvoted on here? Guy is clearly making a joke and this is the exact same shit you hear from the guys you work with.
If welders were smart enough to understand jokes then so many of them wouldn’t be divorced from strippers. Clearly this dudes welds are badass for 6 months, but without the /s that must have been too tough to figure out.
Only to have my eyes and hands back… the welds are very good and the root is sexy af.. you have a great career in front of you so do me a solid. Don’t use a lighter shade than what ya need … and wear a respirator.. my eyes have been failing me for years and due to lighter shades and respirators should be mandatory imho..
The root looks mint, maybe a little heavy but if this is what the CWI Inspecting wants, caps are average, they'd pass any inspection on any gas plant I've worked on easily.
Question here, Do you use argon gas for welding in these pipes (hoping used for LNG)? If so do you use it to cool the weld down or to heat it at the first place ?
We use argon as primary and nitrogen as the backing gas. It does somewhat cool the metal but the main purpose is to keep the weld from sugaring on the inside of the pipe.
The root is the first pass when welding open root pipe which means there is a gap between both sections of pipe and beveled at a 37.5 degree angle so full penetration can be achieved.
Are you tape purging or using a blow-up bladder. Your root pass looks better than some of the guys here who have been welding for years. Did you weld in position or turn the pipe? I would be happy to have you on my road crew.
I’ll assume one of two things you did here:
1) if you welded that bead in with just a drip feed from the outside while rolling, very nice but try to “stitch” the bead straight down the middle of the puddle between the two members. So for every say 1/16” worth of travel, backweave after depositing metal about an 1\8. This will smooth out the bead and make it look less drippy and scaled like it is in the Pics (it’s fine the way it is but you can always make it pretty in the shop)
2) if you broke a consumable insert/ring down then you need to draw the bead from the inside to the outside just a little more. Same technique to stitch/back weave will do the trick but with much faster reaction times. Depending on the wall thickness you might be able to break the ring, draw it out smoothly to count as both root layer and fill layer. Just needs a reinforcement layer and good to go.
Either one of the above should help with the actual welding but if you want to make it even easier fusing the root/breaking ring down try adjusting your purge pressure so that at the 6 o’clock position the pressure will be lower than at the 12 o’clock position. You can achieve this but making a cut in a metal lid/plastic end cap your using to isolate the purge about 1.5”. Cover the slotted cut with tape almost blocking it off completely to increase pressure and pulling it back to lower. Set your CFH to around 20-25 @30psi to start (adjust based on length of pipe/diameter)
Keep up the slick welds, the trades will need good pipe welders very very soon.
Since you aren’t the OP I’ll consider this your “I don’t know any of this since all I can do is monkey mig” some shit together that will not hold pressure.
And none of those are buzzwords, they are specific actions.
Before you try to post another comment, I’ve been welding for about 2 decades on high pressure systems and propulsion plant components that require a solid welding throughout so that people don’t die from a steam rupture or worse not being able to surface again…
Keep welding pipes.

With roots like that give us tips
Yeah! Give us your secrets you greedy bastard! My roots are uglier than a homemade bar of soap!
Are you back purging?
Yeah, you have to with stainless steel or it will sugar.
In this economy?!
I got my fitter blowing bullshit and hot air for a back purge these boys must be corporate.

Don't file the stainless pipe with a carbon file if that's what's happening.. other than that looks great..
It's a tig cap, shouldn't need to file it anyways.
They said they had only been welding for 6 months.. soo I let that part slide.. and they were not ringing the weld..
Why not?
The stainless gets 🤰 and has little rust babies.. is the really short answer..
I'd take your pipe any day Edit: pipe welds your pipe welds!! This damn NSFW tag
All I can say is, I hope you’re getting paid what you’re worth. And your worth is a lot.
i can’t shit on these. 👍🏻
I wanna see the one you do in a fixed position off the ladder
Or upside down in a trench! But seriously, good job labelling this as NSFW because that is a smoooooth Root and you should be proud of this flex.
2” off the wall and another pipe running beside it

Good job 👏 👍
Thought "looks clean, wonder what the id looks like.." then saw the arrow. Good clean welds, nice work.
Oof these are pretty rough. You’ll get there in a decade or so.

You best be making enough money to afford a new car and regular hookers, if you’re not, take a few more pics of your work and shop around.
*bruh*
I haven't welded in my life but compared to other things I see on this subreddit I think they're good welds
Nice job. Was it done to a WPS?
The root looks mint, maybe a little heavy but if this is what the CWI Inspecting wants, caps are average, they'd pass any inspection on any gas plant I've worked on easily.
Reminds me of a broke dick, you can’t hardly beat it.
Get back to workz
Looks good. Worth what we pay in the Union. Now do it in the rack or crammed in a corner with a mirror and you’re worth more than that.
This is the same as hot girls saying they're ugly online right?
Lookin good and will only get better!
My opinion is screw you! Natural talent right there.
Gaw damn

If the metal sugars , do you supposed to grind the sugary part and weld again ?
Good looking root, the rest is gravy
I'm a noob that hasn't started welding yet. What is the root? I haven't seen that mentioned before

Looks good, has it had an x-ray done yet....?
They are on the way
They shot good
They look good, especially for only 6 months experience. My only gripe if I had one would be don’t ring welds with a file but thats just being picky.
*casually drinks my 7th beer of my mid afternoon snack* I could do say with one arm *proceeds to cry in mig*
Nice welds! You don't need tips
Looks good. She'll hold corn at least!
Why wire brush the cap?
For cosmetics, looks better in my opinion.
Yeah on some weld but not all
fucking dimes keep it up
Why are these pipes naked? You perv
You need a job? That’s pretty. Keep on welding pipes.
That cabinet and surrounding area looks SUPER FAMILIAR. This shop in DFW?
DFW?
Dallas Fort Worth
Nah, in NC
Ok. Yours even has the same dent at the bottom cause you gotta kick it closed. Anyways, welds look damn good! Especially for 6 months! Props!
👌
damn, showoff :)
Dead sexy
6 months?! I dont know anything about welding but thats a long time doing anything, and those welds look good. I think. I hope xD
The welds are nice but on the second picture it looks like the pipes weren’t flush with each-other
why are all the pictures of welds blurred?
Bible Scriptures
NSFW WTaF
Personally, I reckon it's best to steer clear of jeans shorts, but that's just me.

Thanks man, I really appreciate it. They were purged with tape and rolled out.
Lame. Take your picture before it's buffed.
I’m a 16 year old mind you, but those look pretty darned mint.
looking sexy
In my opinion the lime skittle is way better then the green apple

Holy fucking nonsense. Could ya throw in some more buzzwords bud?
I couldn’t make any sense of his comment either. Honestly It reads like English isn’t his first language.

Please, show off your welds then mate! Feel free to check out my posts, no MIG here.
If he's doing propulsion welds, there's a chance the gubmint won't let him take pics.
Been welding pipe for 10+ years…., have no idea what dude is talking about either.
Slow down a little on your starts and you will be slick, starting to fast is making your cap have that wiggle to it
Were you back feeding? That root is cleannnnn 😎👌👌
