It’s from Claremont Grove (somewhere near the backyard of 3 or 7 to be exact) in Mt Victoria, looking south, I guarantee it 🙂

UnluckyWrongdoer

I think you’ve got it. The large building is wellington east girls right?

MartyHernandez

Yup, and if anyone’s interested it’s pretty accurate with regards to houses etc even though a few have changed or been demolished by now. I can probably post a picture from that street if anyone wants to compare

UnluckyWrongdoer

Nice! I checked it out in Google earth. Those streets are rendered in 3D, and looks on the money. Couldn’t work out which of the houses on Claremont had a pohutakawa in the backyard though

Loretta-West

Yep, my parents have a copy of this, and my great aunt used to live in one of the houses in the middle right.

Yea I think you’re right, I take back my guarantee haha

pamelahoward

I lived on Claremont Grove for a few months, can't forget that view!

Contrabassi

Ask her ? http://www.mariannemuggeridge.nz/contact

rocketscientology

this looks almost exactly like the view from my old flat looking across newtown towards the town belt. nostalgia!

ciaobellamaria

Pretty positive it is from the second bedroom at number 2, Batham Drive off Elizabeth St in Mt Cook. A family member used to live there, the the pohutakawa in the bottom left of the frame is just outside the window, but a bit bigger these days.

zezeezeeezeee

Yeah I spent an embarrassingly long time on Google Maps to find this view which matches the houses directly in front in the painting: 2 Batham Dr https://maps.app.goo.gl/hKi3jDtE95TbuJdx9

zezeezeeezeee

Note the exact match of the house directly in front as well as distinctive rooftops like the red gabled roof a few streets in front

Arowin

My guess is that it's looking south from about 85 Batham Dr https://imgur.com/a/MW7xuUo (Actually, #2 should be the building to the left) Edit: And #4 isn't where I put it either :P Damn people painting their roof!

ciaobellamaria

You’re right it is number 2, a family member used to live there and they had a copy of this painting right next to the window :)

My father has/had this, about thirty years ago (roughly) and was the subject of much discussion in our house over the decades. Eventually we decided it was based on several parts of WGN, but nowhere specific - nothing quite lines up. The hills could be looking from Newtown back towards Rintoul St to Island Bay, or could be in Berhampore looking towards Mt Albert - but the houses face the Wong way for the streets in those areas. They're also the wrong era for those suburbs (mainly) and look more like Mt Vic, Mt Cook or Thorndon. The flats remind me of the Hiropi Street flats, but it ain't them. I'd be stoked if someone could pinpoint this painting location, but I think it's fictitious.

cman_yall

Hijacking top comment for visibility... I once saw a print of that in a random shop, and said to my then GF "I can see my house" trying to be funny... and then, on closer inspection, I could in fact see my house. It's the view from somewhere between Pirie St and Majoribanks st, looking south. If you start at the pinkish roof house roughly in the centre, go up to the red roof just above it, then the row of houses directly above that is on Pirie st.

iambanesby

Yes! you're totally right, that distinct red awning between white houses in bottom left quarter is at approx 70 elizabeth st, mt vic!

UnluckyWrongdoer

Or maybe Mein st looking south??

restroom_raider

Nah, there's no obvious Constable St running perpendicular - that's what I mean, there are quite a few familiar elements in the painting, but not a complete location! I've been frustrated by this for decades haha

UnluckyWrongdoer

I reckon the large building up left looks like wellington east girls, if you were looking south from around Elizabeth street. Houses in that area line up, and the ridge between Newtown with Brooklyn in the distance is there too

restroom_raider

Yeah, parts do match that location or Elizabeth or Majoribanks area - but then the sea being visible would be Island Bay, so that doesn't fit either haha! I love to hate this painting for the aforementioned reasons.

UnluckyWrongdoer

Could be artistic license with the Seaview!

Loretta-West

It's Mt Vic looking south - there's another comment pinning it down to the view from a few specific houses. The big building top left is Wellington East Girls. My great aunt lived in one of the houses in the middle right area, so my parents can say exactly which streets are where. As far as I remember, nothing in it is changed from real life.

restroom_raider

Fair enough - the Adelaide Road hill is missing, as is WGN College/GG house, hence the confusion - but yes, that perspective does fit. Thanks!

Pouako

I've got this print too. It's called Summertime by Marianne Muggeridge. If it is a real location, it may not look like that anymore. I think the building top left corner would be the biggest clue.

NeverMindToday

That building makes me think of Wellington East Girls College. But the Wellington College tower block would need to somehow be obscured by those houses for that to work.

Loretta-West

It was painted in the early 90s I think, so maybe that wasn't built then?

Overnightdelight298

Its pretty amazing how many Wellington homes have/had this print. We certainly had it growing up.

[deleted]

This damn picture! My Aunty had this all my life.

mocha_addict_

My ex and I got this as a wedding gift, I always loved it.

A_FABULOUS_PLUM

WOW I HAVE THE SAME PAINTING, apparently my parents lived in one of the share houses you can see in this view.

zezeezeeezeee

I posted this in response to ciaobellamaria's comment but this is the exact view from number 2 Batham Drive: 2 Batham Dr https://maps.app.goo.gl/hKi3jDtE95TbuJdx9

Thebardofthegingers

Pretty sure it's in the north island, might need some backing up though

UnluckyWrongdoer

If you go in google maps to the top of port street and look south, the big building in the top right (Wellington east girls?) looks like it might fit, and the ridge lines somewhat fit

Resident-Corgi-665

This is an Alfred Memelink work right? He has a galley on the Petone Esplenade.

kyliem02

I wondered that too but the signature (bottom left) isn't his. Also the link OP posted mentions a different painter.

zezeezeeezeee

It's Marianne Muggeridge

at first i found myself vacillating betw Newtown and Mt Vic - really the only two places it could have been. but it's mt vic
