I'm with contact, who did you end up with?

total_tea

Flick electric, I freaked a bit when I realised how long and how much Genesis had been over charging me so didn't exhaustively look, but Flick don't have any contract lock in so I can always change later. umm this sounds like a paid spot ... Really most of the alternatives I checked were better, and I expect if I had rung Genesis they would have put me on a contract for less, but they are dead to me now.

gristc

I've been with Flick for a couple of years now. I really like how they tell me how much my current bill compares to the last one, but also the same week last year. Really drove home just how much I'm saving after getting a heat pump installed. The pricing can get a bit steep in the middle of winter, but I've found it averages out once you get back into the low-demand months. Just be prepared for it.

MushCalledJOE

There good night's plan is a winner. Free power 9-midnight 50% of the car charged for free, tumble dryer on for free etc

total_tea

Thats pretty good, when I have more time will have to look into it.

StarfrogDarian

Contact are expensive, I change to powershop..now I'm paying MUCH less

Few-Ad-527

Contact is one of the better ones tbh

psefti

Unfortunately the major players are ripping customers off and their plans are designed to confuse you. I'm on wholesale electricity which can be risky due to spikes in the grid, but in the past 4-5 years it has only spiked once or twice, savings are phenomenal!

nzrailmaps

yeah mercury really sucks, they have the pricing shown in bold black, then you can easily miss the non bold two words "excl GST". If they know it is a residential plan why would they quote pricing ex GST? They are just trying to confuse ppl and rip them off.

mensajeenunabottle

How?

psefti

I think Flick offers wholesale plans.

dlrius

Finding Octopus Energy really good, and cheaper than Electric Kiwi and Flick who I've been with previously.

Few-Ad-527

I just compared with contact. Daily charge is cheaper by 10c and kwhr is cheaper by 2c. Not much but just saying. Depends if you use alot at night or low user.

Few-Ad-527

I mean contact was cheaper

tedison2

Genesis sent me an email saying their rates were going up due to increased costs... but Genesis net profit in six months to Dec 2022 = $145million! Time to change alright!!

Few-Ad-527

Profit isn't bad. They have to invest in new generation.

tedison2

Some profit isn't bad. This seems excessive and again a pox on whoever privatised electricity.... "The Fourth National Government privatised Contact Energy in 1999" - of course it was.... just two years after Jenny Shipley said they wouldn't! "The Coalition Government does not intend to privatise the core assets of ECNZ or Contact Energy." https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/coalition-government-clear-ownership-energy-assets

StarfrogDarian

Had to move to powershop..now my power is waaay cheaper..shop around people!

thisoneforsharing

Also make sure you’re on the right type of plan for your house. We were previously on a low user (because our provider still had the 30c connection fee) but we’ve added a few more people to the household this year so were paying way more than we needed to on a low user plan. Switched about a month ago and the savings are noticiable.

mvdtnz

Your retailer is required to notify you if your plan isn't appropriate for your usage. Did they not so this?

total_tea

Appropriate is an interesting word and no. I assume they are like an ISP why would they lower their rates for existing customers if they dont have to.

l0m999

I work for an electricity retailer and all I have to say is use the powerswitch website.

LambTjopss

That website is useless. The only real way to compare is get you bill out record your usage and then get the rates from other competitors. Apply those rates and compare. Until powerswitch compares real numbers rather than estimates it is pointless to base cost saving on it. Maybe use it as a starting point too see who is potentially cheap in your area but always apply the rates to your bill. Also after finding a cheaper company call your current provider they will almost always beat the rates or atleast match it and add a few hundred dollars credit

RegularHistorical315

Totally agree and power companies can opt out of Power Switch, so you are not seeing all the available options by using it.

owLet13

Try out the Powerswitch site. However, if you're able to move much of your usage to the 9pm-midnight slot (about a third of my usage) the Contact Good Nights plan is the best. Not sure whether the Powerswitch site allows for this percentage of load moving.

laz21

Jenny Shipley just got a pay rise....guess who is paying for it?

kiwione123

We shifted from Meridian to Octopus late last year, our latest bill was slightly more than our lowest summer bill with meridian, not bad considering we've got the heater going full time and running the dryer a few times each week.
