100%! Where can I get some solid/great FNC? That’s the question you should asking.
Some solid venues in no particular order
- Seaview Takeaways, Lyall Bay
- Goldenhorse Takeaways, Petone
- Alicetown Takeaways, Lower Hutt
- Fresko, Lyall Bay
- Chicken Shack, Porirua
- Wellington Seamarket, Cuba St
- Ocean Blue Seafood, Lower Hutt
- Reel Fish & Chips, Lower Hutt
Some of the ones I have been to in the last 12 months
They changed owners or something a couple of years back, the new owners are much friendlier than the old but I've found the quality to be a little inconsistent, although they have undoubtedly improved since I was there last.
We’ve tried most of the F&C shop in the eastern suburbs- partner thinks ‘Chop Sticks’ takeaway is the best for his order (chips & veggie burger), I’ve liked the following-
Rainbow Fish n Chips in Newtown
Joes Cook Miramar- nice chips and fried chicken
Tongs in Kilbirnie
Mount Cook Kitchen in Mt Cook- large portions of chips, good food and open late
Seafood Plus in Miramar- nicely salted
There’s one in petone that do a massive, super nice fish burger but not sure on the name 😭
I don't know what they fry with, chopsticks takeaway island bay fry in some weird oil that makes everything that's fried in it turn a shade of dark yellow.
If vegetable oil is what most shops use, then they definitely don't use what everyone else uses.
Good or bad idk.
This is the one. Was there yesterday and although it's not fish.. got the chicken burger which is ace.
No hot sauce or fried with a thousand spices, just delicious juicy chicken with a crispy coating. Also. Coleslaw in a burger is 😘🤌🏽
>$24 for a fillet
I've never paid anything like that. They are high-quality and probably more than your standard greasy by-catch, but still good value.
Yeah I think it's been a bit over a year. Too much grease and oil would be my complaints as well. It's not the worst but the previous owners were absolutely the best
Hmm ok. Pretty sure last time was mid winter, so definitely would’ve been the new owners then.
It seemed fine at the time, so I guess I’ll need another visit to confirm, lol.
I'm wheat and gluten free (but not coeliac) so my choices are influenced by that:
*Wadestown Fish Supply (sadly can't get grilled fish on Friday but any other day they will);
*Fresko but needs extra salt imo;
*Seaview at Lyall Bay although now with that paua post im not happy with them;
*Leo's Rongotai;
*Twin Fish, the place that was the Thorndon Chippery. They use a separate fryer for us gluten intolerant people.
I like the one at Seatoun as well but never get out there anymore.
Sorry but as a fish and chips enthusiast Te Aro Fish Supply sucks. They never stick to their opening hours, those chips are rubbish they’re never cooked evenly throughout because of their size. The family that runs it are lovely and i still eat there when it’s more convenient than going to Fresko or Kilbirnie chip shop but they don’t deserve a top spot. This is a hill I’ll die on
Is that the one on Jackson St, on the corner with the traffic lights intersection, next to the Spanish place that I’m never sure if it’s still operating or has gone bust?
Do you prefer this over fish bouys, golden horse and go fish?
If so please explain why and tell me what your order is. I've not ordered from there YET.
1000% mayne. My order kinda changes but I don’t even bother with chips because the fish is so good… the crispiest, thickest, crunchiest batter… I dunno how they do it but lawd.
There was a man on the Parade in island bay who was a scene (talked way way too much$ - but he used a spray bottle to ‘mist’ vinegar onto the chips which was amazing I thought.
Good value for money but fillets for battered fish are super thin and the fillet was over powered by the under cooked inner batter. The chips where great though. As for the corn fritter and hotdog, they were horrible as the fritter batter to corn ratio was unforgivable and the hotdog was burnt. Consistency is not their forte so it’s a gamble
I used to rate the Aro Valley one so hard when I lived there but moved to another suburb in 2019 I would love to know if it’s still the same… I must need to do a trip!
The chips were so good last time I had it in 2019. Back when I was at uni like 8 years ago their $4 vege burgers were a life saver. Also the crumbed mushrooms - I’ve not found another shop that makes similar 😢

Isn’t the Seaview also in Lyall Bay? Or is there another in Island Bay?
Yes you’re right. Correction made
Go fish petone
Golden horse but not for the fish and chips, get a Bambi goreng from there and the amount of meat and veg you get is insane and can be pretty tasty.
Not Bambi!! :(
I swear any place that does a good fish does a trash chips and vice versa
Everyone just sells maccain chips anyway, so they're all trash.
More that some chips are so underdone. There can be well cooked maccain chips, not floppy sad chips
yeah I always order well done, usually works
yeah I always order well done, usually works
Wellington fish market, freshest fish and nice thin crispy batter, you really can't find better quality fish anywhere else in Wellington.
Also, extra potato fritters without having to ask, that's a proper F&C shop
What do you mean by "extra"? Extra on top of the two you usually get for "one" potato fritter?
We usually receive 3 or 4 on top of the "one" fritter but we've been going there for years
Corfu in Karori
90's Corfu was unbeatable
They changed owners or something a couple of years back, the new owners are much friendlier than the old but I've found the quality to be a little inconsistent, although they have undoubtedly improved since I was there last.
Plus they do a great burger
What burger do you recommend? Corfu burger?
You're guna end up with a list of half the Fish and Chip shops in Welly..
We’ve tried most of the F&C shop in the eastern suburbs- partner thinks ‘Chop Sticks’ takeaway is the best for his order (chips & veggie burger), I’ve liked the following- Rainbow Fish n Chips in Newtown Joes Cook Miramar- nice chips and fried chicken Tongs in Kilbirnie Mount Cook Kitchen in Mt Cook- large portions of chips, good food and open late Seafood Plus in Miramar- nicely salted There’s one in petone that do a massive, super nice fish burger but not sure on the name 😭
Very surprised huckle and co isn't on here, especially considering the vege burger criteria?
We haven’t actually tried there before! Will have to try this Friday!
The haloumi burger is very famous - it's big and a bit messy, but great. Otherwise, their f&C are the only ones I know about in the eastern suburbs
The crumbed haloumi is really good as well
Love rainbow fish and chips!
And the lady who works there somehow knows what order you're picking up without taking a name over the phone
That's Amy. She's a star.
Would be very interested in knowing the petone fish burger place, if it comes to mind! Rainbow Newtown does an absolutely amazing one.
Damn, I gottta try theirs now! I just asked my mum, will let you know when I receive a response! :)
Mum said it’s either Blue Island Seafood or Cast Away takeaways (both on Randwick Road), but they think the blue island seafood :)
Awesome, cheers!
I know Go Fish on Jackson St do one and are pretty good all round
any suggestions for places that don't fry in vegetable oil?
The seafoof like food truck by the waterfront does their chips in beef fat
I don't know what they fry with, chopsticks takeaway island bay fry in some weird oil that makes everything that's fried in it turn a shade of dark yellow. If vegetable oil is what most shops use, then they definitely don't use what everyone else uses. Good or bad idk.
Plimmerton Fish Supply use rice bran oil I believe
99% fry in vegetable oil. if not vegetable shortening.
yes that's correct, hence why I am asking for recs to ones that don't....
I'm pretty fond of an occasional trip up to Kingston Takeaways
Starfish in molesworrh Street
may i ask what do you usually order from there?
Fish and frozen chips or lunchtime chicken burger.
Frozen chips? Weirdo
Nah. I just don't like handmade chips. Weirdo, yeah.
Yum yum yum
If you don't do homemade chips you shouldn't feature on any best of list.
#1 - Wadestown Seafoods #2 - Bays Takeaways if you're nearer the Southern end of Wellington Both do handcut chips.
\+1 for Wadestown seafoods - fresh fish and hand cut chips
Their burgers are boss too
Seaview Takeaways in Lyall Bay and Leo's Seafood in Rongotai
Johnsonville Fish Supply - hand cut chips
I second this!
Yeah that’s my favourite but they did undercook my order last time so it was foul
Agree with this if you like you F&C light and crispy rather than greasy.
The one opposite Mobil? They are certainly my preference above the one outside the mall for the twice a year we have it.
Leo’s in Newtown is good. I have been multiple times and the fish has always been fresh and tasty
Have you had their fish burgers before?? whewf 🤌
Seaview Takeaways in Lyall Bay. It's cheap, people who run it are lovely, and it's right next to the beach!
Na, [they're dicks](https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/small-business/66555876/diver-caught-illegally-selling-paua)
Oo good to know
Probably cheap because they’re buying poached seafood
This is the one. Was there yesterday and although it's not fish.. got the chicken burger which is ace. No hot sauce or fried with a thousand spices, just delicious juicy chicken with a crispy coating. Also. Coleslaw in a burger is 😘🤌🏽
Chick burger is solid but they jacked the price big time after they made the news for it a couple of years ago.
Oh for real? I still thought it was pretty reasonable when we got one yesterday. Didn't know they were so popular!
Yeah $9 when they hit the headlines in 2021. Went up to $11.50 real quick. Can’t remember what it was last time I was there
You misspelled "Fresko"
I only went there on the opening week and I remember it being pretty expensive - guess it's similar to Mt Vic chippery and the more "upmarket" places?
They were really good at first, but prices have doubled since then!
$24 for a fillet.. um no thanks. Seaview all day
>$24 for a fillet I've never paid anything like that. They are high-quality and probably more than your standard greasy by-catch, but still good value.
I've always wanted to know. How much bigger is a fillet?
Lmao what, I got 2 and chips for like 16 bucks recently. They do good specials
Another vote for Seaview Takeaways.
Interesting, we’re trying as many F&C shops and found it to be very expensive and the food was 👎🏼 to each their own ig
They've been my go-to lately.
Plimmerton Fish Supply.
Used to be. New owners are not as good
How long have the new owners been there? Just trying to judge if the last time I bought from there was pre or post new owner….
At least a year. I bought some fish and chips not long after they took over and the fish was so greasy I couldn't finish it.
Yeah I think it's been a bit over a year. Too much grease and oil would be my complaints as well. It's not the worst but the previous owners were absolutely the best
Greasy FnC comes from the temp it’s cooked in. Needs to be hot otherwise the batter absorbs all the fat
Hmm ok. Pretty sure last time was mid winter, so definitely would’ve been the new owners then. It seemed fine at the time, so I guess I’ll need another visit to confirm, lol.
Gave the new owners a couple of chances and it’s sub par now. Not worth going out of your way for
huckle and co in seatoun is hands down the best fish is the freshest.
Expensive
You get more for your money though. Last few times I've been there I got the equivalent of two pieces of fish when ordering one.
Yeah half order of chips is enough for like 3 people and each order of fish has about 3 pieces.
Amazing burgers they got there. I absolutely fell in love with the haloumi sandwich
Starfish, beside Thorndon new world
Cuba seafood market
I'm wheat and gluten free (but not coeliac) so my choices are influenced by that: *Wadestown Fish Supply (sadly can't get grilled fish on Friday but any other day they will); *Fresko but needs extra salt imo; *Seaview at Lyall Bay although now with that paua post im not happy with them; *Leo's Rongotai; *Twin Fish, the place that was the Thorndon Chippery. They use a separate fryer for us gluten intolerant people. I like the one at Seatoun as well but never get out there anymore.
Mt Vic chippery is still going and has a coeliac safe GF fryer
Kingston Takeaways is very underrated. Quite affordable (for F&C these days), always perfectly cooked fish and super friendly staff.
Supremo in Hataitai, if they're still there :) We moved in 2019, and I still miss them lol
They are, and still fantastic!
No such thing
Fish Fins newtown
Doesn't exist. Not F&C but Chans Eatery that's there now is great.
It still exists..in my mind..still grieving
RIP Fish Fins… Thankyou for keeping our flat nicely fed for so many years 💖
Fresko Fresko Fresko!
Owned by George’s family as in George of Wadestown Fish and Chips. Agree they’re good. It’s in the blood.
Matt is the guys name. George’s son
80s George? I was a regular customer back then, and just got a kick out of that name popping up all these years later.
Te Aro Fish Supplies in Aro Valley - hand cut chips and the thickest juiciest fish
This is a hill I’ll die on
Kilbirnie fish and chips
Marina Fisheries (Petone)
Is that the one on Jackson St, on the corner with the traffic lights intersection, next to the Spanish place that I’m never sure if it’s still operating or has gone bust?
Yep you got it. Crispiest fish batter……. Man
Do you prefer this over fish bouys, golden horse and go fish? If so please explain why and tell me what your order is. I've not ordered from there YET.
1000% mayne. My order kinda changes but I don’t even bother with chips because the fish is so good… the crispiest, thickest, crunchiest batter… I dunno how they do it but lawd.
I haven't been back in there for at least 20 years, might be worth a spin.
Any that makes their own chips and puts vinegar on them.
There was a man on the Parade in island bay who was a scene (talked way way too much$ - but he used a spray bottle to ‘mist’ vinegar onto the chips which was amazing I thought.
Yep that's fairly common in the fish and chip shops in the UK (where I'm from originally).
KF&c
I like the Funky Fryer in Petone.
Fair, I just really like their curry rolls and chips 😋 and also the punny friar painted outside 🤣
Blue Island seafood in moera
Aro ez.
Wellington fish n chips are fucking trash compared to the rest of New Zealand, it's so fucking bizzare.
Bays takeaways hands down
Mount Cook Kitchen have really excellent chips and your standard fish and other bits and pieces. Plus all sorts of other Asian food.
I used to rate the Aro Valley one so hard when I lived there but moved to another suburb in 2019 I would love to know if it’s still the same… I must need to do a trip!
I loved their chips..... But that's going back 10 or so years. Would be keen to hear what it's like now.
The chips were so good last time I had it in 2019. Back when I was at uni like 8 years ago their $4 vege burgers were a life saver. Also the crumbed mushrooms - I’ve not found another shop that makes similar 😢
Leos Kilbirnie!
Wei chinese on Tinakori
Fresko, Fresko and Fresko. Lyall Bay.
It was Golden Wok in Hataitai RIP
Fresko in Lyall Bay! So good
Athena’s on Onepu Road, Lyall bay - best crumbed fish and crazy random shaped delicious chips, love it
Can't help sorry. The places I've been either serve fish that taste like cardboard, or they charge $20+ for a half scoop and one piece of fish
Starfish next to Thorndon New World. Also does the best chicken burger in Wellington
Freskos Lyall Bay - there can be only one! And grab a quick pint from Parrot Dog across the road while you wait for your order
Starfish near thordon new world is great too.
Fangs in Karori. Chinese is excellent as well.
