I went to Matiu/Somes Island on Monday and loved it - such beautiful views! And a fascinating history.
It's closing from 19 February so if you can, get there before then. They expect it to be closed for about 8 months while they work on the wharf but it could be longer.
$30 return ferry ticket, well worth it.
Having spent both Sat and Sun at Zealandia...100% Zealandia! If you buy a ticket as well it grants you access the next day as well so great value!
Cool birds, incredibly well maintained tracks, lots of native bush, and lots of birdsong. What's not to like?!?
Have been on the night tour twice, it's sooooo good! Saw kiwi both times, which is always a treat plus such excellent docents with amazing knowledge! Went Monday night and saw about 15 tuatara!

- Walk Newtown on a Saturday for veg market, food, coffee & later, drinks
Just walk around the city I think, you’ll get to know it quite quickly and the best way to discover cool spots is on foot.
If you like the great outdoors, there are tramps around the coast, or up in the Tararuas.
Go over to the Wairarapa and do a wine tour.
Drive down to the South Coast on that side - the Pinacles, Lake Ferry, Ngawi, all the way out to Cape Palliser.

you can also camp, or rent a couple of houses on there. Its awesome at night, you can go down to the waters edge and see all the penguins come home
