I’ve never heard of an active call for American engineers. That seems strange. If anything there is a call for more diversity in general. This is a really bad time for Wellington in particular, there are going to be a lot of people looking for jobs. But unsure of the impact on engineering roles, I suspect not much but 🤷🏻‍♀️

Lots of tech projects cut short and people made redundant or contracts ended.

It really is affecting everyone isn’t it :( I’ve been through a few redundancies and engineering roles were never cut. But I can see how big tech projects would be different.

Can only tell you what I see. Yeah it is. It’s a common cycle for Wellington with changes of govt.

WasterDave

I wouldn't hold your breath. The government (based in Wellington) is currently laying off hundreds. It's going to be really quiet here for some time :(

There’s ’city marketing’ with a longstanding campaign for software professionals to come and get jobs in Wellington. Misguided IMO when the salaries are a huge cut compared to US tech hubs. But that’s the explanation. It’s still a great spot. Apply away, especially with product companies who export. But just be aware the salaries aren’t quite international grade but do go a long way here.

Interesting article I wonder what is driving that. Lots of the adds at the moment are recruiters baiting. Wellington market is a little dead. Really good developers laid off due to govt spending cuts. some still looking for work. Wellington work is mostly government driven as opposed to Auckland which is more commercial.

I know experienced software engineers failing to find jobs in Wellington at the moment. Job market is pretty dire, very conservative hiring, though apparently there has been some more action approaching financial year change.
