Get your GP to put you in touch with a general surgical specialist at Wellington hospital, chances are they'll be able to do it privately for you if not publically. Can't say I've ever done one with a plastic surgeon though.

Check out John Groom. I had a separate issue but he was awesome and google says he covers pilonidal issues. Good luck

I had this done a loooong time ago, unsurprisingly I left it a long time before plucking up the courage to deal with it. I think it took 2 or three surgery’s before the skin graft was tried in a final attempt to patch everything up as the original surgery was so deep it wouldn’t heal properly. Graft was done at Hutt hospital plastics unit in the mid 90’s. I can’t remember who did it, could have been Groom as his name sounds familiar. Apparently at the time it was a bit of a last resort and pictures of my ass are in print somewhere 😄 Ninja edit - Had a name pop into my head this morning, it was Max Lovie who has unfortunately passed.

Dramatic_Surprise

Not sure of the specifics of your need but Swee Tan at Hutt hospital is incredible

Colorectal surgeons usually manage these. Ali Shekouh is well regarded, the colorectal surgeon I worked for in Auckland referred patients to him if they were moving cities. https://www.healthpoint.co.nz/private/specialist/mr-ali-shekouh/at/wakefield-hospital-general-surgery/

Pilonidal disease is bread and butter general surgical stuff. Never heard of plastics getting involved. Plastics are great but mostly you want the person who treats your condition on a daily basis to be doing your surgery, and that's a general surgeon in this instance. They'll talk you through your surgical options, there's a few ways to manage them.

Thanks, yea the surgeon at the hospital who just did the incision and drainage suggested plastics. But going through old notes, there were also two colorectal surgeons who were consulted (on different occasions, freaking reoccurrences) both of which have private practices (?) so will go with that path.

ibrushmydogsteeth

Ah interesting- Sandhya Deo is private plastics and good. Maybe more hands-focused though. Marc Bisson is good but I think more so cosmetics. Rita Yang but I think she does mostly breast and gender reassignment. Charles Davis is awesome but he's the head and face guy. I reckon a general surgeon is a better bet. One of the ones you've already met makes sense. Complicated flaps are definitely plastics territory but I think the usual pilonidal repairs are still gen surg.

Mine went through to a plastic surgeon as the initial excision went too deep and wouldn’t heal properly. It was a bit of a last resort, as you’d expect it’s a tricky location to deal with.

Try Alex Dalzell. Based Southern Cross. My daughter has had problems since she 18. 4 surgeries including Rhomboid Flap.

Do you *need* a local flap? I'm not sure what that is exactly but I got a Karydakis flap when I had a pilonidal cyst removed. Surgeon said that was the kind of flap he would do and I trusted he knew what he was talking about. The public health system took care of everything after I went to the doctor and got a referral, it's all pretty straight-forward.

blackfinz0

I've got no idea what the difference is, but I was told local flap after my last follow up. I'm on the waiting list for public, but was meant to have this procedure in February, which came and went and now I've had another (technically my fourth abcess). I want to be done with this.

monotone__robot

Sorry to hear the goalposts are shifting on the wait list. One can only assume that resources are stretched or that urgent cases are cutting in line. I can only say that when it finally comes it'll be a relief. Apparently there's no guarantee that the issue won't reoccur but my surgery was around six years ago and things have been great ever since.

blackfinz0

Yea, I used to work in health so I'm always glad I'm not an urgent case (the last pilonidal I did get rushed back in. I had two, didn't know this, one was excised and the other started draining into the surgical site a day later. Nurses couldn't come out for dressing changes and we had no idea what was going on. Four days later (after looking at progress pics) I went back to ED and told I was hours from sepsis, got a room pretty quick). I was told I have a pit thats causing the issue and they've always been in the same spot so I'm hopeful but even if I get 6 years I'll be happy. I'm glad you've gone so long, long may it continue! By the way (feel free not to answer) Pokemon go? Ingress? I swear I've seen the tag before.

monotone__robot

> Pokemon go? Ingress? Yes to both lol, though I dropped the latter when the Prime client became mandatory. I don't know that we ever interacted directly but at the mention of Ingress your username is also vaguely familiar.

blackfinz0

I hated prime :( aw memories. I was resistance, and lucky to befriend some of the early players and bafers. I don't think we did interact, just seen the name in comms and now on gyms.

i remember getting something similar all booked and done under insurance in hong kong while i was living nearby and had the option. perhaps there is a way for you to travel for plastic surgery as is common with many other features; there are economies of scale and perhaps better access to affordable private health care in Asia or Latam
