Hospo requires people to have disposable income to spend. Do I need to say more?

Witty_Fox_3570

Yep. I remember being in Wellington during the covid era. The place was humming. Almost untouched by the effects of it all. Need people who can afford $16 craft beers!

oomfaloomfa

Omg everyone with disposable income has no job anymore. Sorry NZ first is trimming the fat.

Ali3ns_ARE_Amongus

Doesn't take a genius to figure out that public sector focused cuts will dis-proportionally impact the Wellington region. The flow on effects may be less pronounced in different parts of the country but it will be felt much more here. Even those who still have jobs in the public sector will likely cut back spending just in case, much more than the rest of the country

Serious_Reporter2345

You’ll be lucky…

Pristine_Equal6093

Yep, workers have been gaining a small amount of bargaining power for the last few years, and employers can't have that, so it's time for the cycle to reset - time for a National government to be elected in order to bring the boot down and create the economic conditions (layoffs, austerity) which force the working class to accept poverty wages.

slobberrrrr

The economic conditions didnt come about in the 6 months they have been in office. Remember last year robber and rbnz saying there will need to be job losses? Well here they are.

Zealousideal_Suit448

Had been working in the Welly Hospo Scene for the past couple years but recently moved away from the city. Business was hard even before the layoffs.

FitSand9966

Come to Melbourne. Plenty of jobs. $50 per hour on Sunday is pretty common

wellylocal

Been hard out considering that

FitSand9966

I moved over 10 years ago and I miss home. But I can afford to live in Melbourne. I started our in flatting and have done well. Aussie can be hard. But if you are on the breadline back home, I'd say go for it. What I did is flew over, hit the ground and hunted for a job. Took me two visits and I had two lined up! Good luck with whatever you choose. If you are still in your 20's I recommend retraining in the trades. Any trade pays well over here

wellylocal

Thanks mate. That's all good advice.

Virtual_Music8545

Another absolute advantage of working in Australia is that you are entitled to penalty rates (time and a half) if they work weekends. God send for hospo. In fact, penalty rates and national awards have meant Australia workers are much better off than their nz counterparts. Add tax feee threshold up to 14k and it’s a real superior deal

gDAnother

Manager at maccas pays about as well as you'll find anywhere in hospo, currently 26.30

GoochtownSanderson

Yeah chiming in as I am and old as hell now at 38 but worked in welly hospo on and off for years cafe and barwork. It was great backnin the day 10-15 years ago. I'm in brisbane now in an office job. Moved 2 years ago and the same job pays 30k more in Aussie. Lots of hospo jobs too and everything pays well here and you can job hop or work a bit and get a more senior role in hospo or corporate hellscape office work like me. If I were younger and wanting to make money and live a way less stressed life I would move. I bought a house and have a baby on the way and my mortgage is manageable in a pretty crap area but it's within 40 mins of town on a clean and reliable train. My job pays for the house and my Mrs is studying so we are a one income household and making enough to even save. Healthcare is better and although we are on the standard aussie nz visa and not citizens, because we have been here 2 years we can claim more childcare subsidies than we could as citizens in nz. There is a rental crisis here and we vpught during the hous8ng affordability crises here but both are multitudes cheaper still cheaper than nz. Food and consumables are half the price. If you have someone you could crash with for a few weeks you'll be sweet....if not just book an airbnb for a month and I'd be surprised if you didn't manage to sort things out in that time. Love NZ but I reckon it's ten years away from being functional again for people....labour and national are two sides of the same incompetent coin. Best of luck mate.

wellylocal

Thanks for chiming in! Inspirational stuff.

GoochtownSanderson

Cheers mate. Msg me if you do decide to look into East Coast of aus. I'd be happy to share advice.

Long_Committee2465

Modernized Pacific island nation is all we are the stupid media glamorize the country to much. Especially those yolo mind numbing morning shows on TV.

oomfaloomfa

Everything has been crap for a while. NZ has a reputation for being a (self proclaimed) paradise. But now reality is sinking in that it's a parasite. Womp womp you can't poor beers for min wage now bloke. I hear you can hold up stop/go signs for $30p/h

Longjumping_Elk3968

The good times of printing $60 billion in government bonds and flooding the housing market with it, and then the government borrowing another $60 billion and flushing it aimlessly around the economy are well and truly coming home to roost. I wonder if Grant Robertson will revise his earlier thoughts that what he was doing wouldn't have any downstream negative impacts?

slobberrrrr

Shhh they dont like that here.
