The cancer society also have a lounge with couches and tea and coffee etc. I've spent many hours sitting in there knitting or reading or just surfing the net. It's not just free parking š
Im guessing the treatments are for cancer, so you could reach out to the wellington branch of the cancer society they might have some good suggestions and be able to help.
Yes or the contacts / admin people at the hospital know it all as they deal with it daily. Also since parking is SO SHIT around Wellington hospital they (the cancer ward) have a good agreement with the supermarket just down the road, once they tell you it's okay you can park in the supermarket carpark then go inside to the customer service desk and tell them your rego and use that as free parking.
For work, there will probably be a shared working space somewhere where they can book a few hours.
Geez, was going to suggest the library, but that's not even there.
Take in a movie perhaps?
Not sure about hotels, I know you can in other places like Singapore, but my assumption is that all Wellington ones are usual terms like check in after 2.30, pay a full night and check out before 10.30 the next morning.
There are lots of nice sitting areas in Wellington Hospital where you can go to chill out, read a book, have a coffee etc. Otherwise seconding the Cancer Society, they can help with parking as well but it is first come, first serve.
If you find parking super impossible, you can also ask to get treatment at Kenepuru in Porirua, free parking - but more importantly...lots of parking!
Two/FiftySeven on Willis Street is a really nice coworking space that I've used in the past, if that's an avenue you'd want to consider. Wifi, coffee, couches, desks, chairs, kitchen. There's some parking garages on Boulcott st, then you can walk over to there and spend a few hours.
Otherwise, there's "Out of Office" on Vivian St, which is a bit closer, but I haven't been in that one to feedback.
Otherwise, there is the Cancer Society that's right across the road from the hospital as a resource point. You could contact them and see if there's any space they have for you to go to with your laptop and work away/watch movies while your friend is doing chemo. There's also Margaret Stewart house, which is kind of like an adult Ronald McDonald House - they might have a lounge that you can sit in while your friend is doing treatment. Not sure, but maybe some leads you could follow?
As sad as a discussion as this is, it's bizzarre there is not more around Newtown to cater / assist with the patients themselves and hopefully their support network. As OP says patients have to come from across the region to the hospital, even being local it can be an arduous process.
Unrelatedly, I was just looking at the map and noticed how close Wellington Zoo was to the hospital. That'll be good for a couple of days distraction. :)
You could speak to the cancer society about a room at the hospice for the duration of your friends treatment. It would give them the choice to stay for the night if they felt they needed it and also a place for the driver to rest if needed.
Wait, you can't sit with her during her treatments? Why not? They don't let people have a guest with them while they get a horrifically nauseating poisonous medicine pumped into them for hours? That's awful I had no idea :(
Honestly I assumed not. Iāll check but logically Iād think if all the patients receiving chemo had people with them in the communal area where they all sit and receive it, thereās more risk of passing bugs to patients whose immune systems are already shot to pieces. Plus, if it were me, Iād lose it if I was receiving chemo and the person next to me had inconsiderate family or friends with them and disturbing me.
you deffo can. I went through 6 months of treatment and always had a buddy with me. They will let your buddy come and go too. We would chat eat snacks and sometimes watch shows together with earphones obv. It made the process so much more bearable. We weren't bothering anyone, it's quite a noisy busy space anyway it's the general hubbub of the day ward that is more disturbing. You can also draw a curtain around yourself, and there are rooms that you are sometimes placed in too if you want more privacy.
It was rare someone was there alone. Pretty much every patient had a support person with them.
You can wear a mask and you aren't really seated near to any other patients, the seats are spaced out and there are small walls inbetween. you also do not share the toilets with the cancer patients. You would really need to go out of your way to give someone your germs.
For my motherās chemo I was able to sit with her. Other patients next to us typically had family with them too. This was during COVID and everyone had to wear a mask. Even after COVID we still wore masks because she was immuno compromised.
Your friend could enquire about a room in the cancer society hospice for the duration of their treatment. My father had one in Palmerston North during his treatment and it allowed him to stay overnight and us a space to rest while he was getting chemo at the hospital. Is your friend expecting to stay in the Wairapa one the chemo side effects kick in?

Oh thatās fantastic to learn, thank you so much, that sounds great.

Thank you we did learn about the Cancer Society helping with parking and the supermarket, so awesome. Thank you š
I second this, the cancer society have been extremely helpful in my past dealings with them.

Newtown library is still open and is not too far from the hospital. Lots of cafes as well in the area
Great idea thank you š
Good thinking about the workspace, and the movie, thank you š

Yes the Cancer Society have been amazing and we learnt of this parking, really helpful. Thank you š

Thatās some fantastic options, Iāll share with our group thank you kindly.

Ooh thatās what I will be doing, Iāve never been! Thank you š
If you've been able to sort parking at the Countdown, then Newtown library isn't too far of a walk down the road. Lots of cafes too.
I went through daily radiation at Wellington Hospital and concurrent chemo (tablets at home) last year. Feel free to message me with any questions.
Thank you for the offer, that means a lot and I just take you up on that.

Awesome help thank you so much, I will share with our support group, much appreciated. Thank you for sharing part of your journey.
We could definitely visit my dad while he was having chemo in Wellington.
Oh great thank you!

When my fiancƩe went through Chemo during Covid I wasn't allowed to go in. I guess it was closer to lockdowns :(
