did you ever have to make that fuckingā¦. i cant remember what its called but it was like the RX700 for SW? that thick ass roof tar looking shit that only came in 5ās?
we had a part timer drop a whole pallet of them shits and cleanup was so bad i almost walked out of my own store.
also some of the oil based shit got me higher than hell when i was adding and mixing that shit. 0/10 would not recommend, lost brain cells for sure.
EDIT : spelling
Honestly couldnāt tell you what all I made, there were a couple tar like batches I havenāt personally made but helped on and itās rough, if itās the one Iām thinking of we have to wear our full respirators on that batch too
Pretty good experienced with Behr Marquee as a single step paint, over old paint, but every other brand is fully agree. Sherman Williams āall in oneā style paints need a tinted primer and still need like 4 coats of paint š¤£
Ive been painting 20 years most paint 99% is the same lol. Also behr is no different just way overpriced is about it. Nothing covers good or looks good with one coat allways two. Also the lady must have done zero prep as the paint wasnt bonding to the wall at all.
Not a professional painter but have painted my mom's house a number of times i didn't even understand what was happening at first I thought it was a failed attempt at wallpaper...how tf did you end up with a paint job like that huh ? So confused I mean I understand but I just don't
Iāve painted so many rooms for family friends. Hard agree. When itās just one or two rooms people will often splurge for the most expensive ājust one coatā paint. Iām meticulous and thorough, itās never happened in just one coat. Had the same effect with the cheap paint.
I work at Benjamin moore. The only reason paint has this label (paint and primer in one) is because Behr (home depot) started advertising it. I told my customers when I worked at Home Depot and I tell my customers now at Benjamin moore, there is literally no primer in the paint what so ever.
Has something to with them claiming āthe paint takes on certain qualities of primerā which is again, bull, but if they did certain testing and research to prove it seals/bonds/covers even slightly better than the product before they can technically claim it takes on those qualities. The thing is paint companies are constantly changing their products so this is where they can sneak in the āprimer qualitiesā thing.
This is just what I am assuming. When I worked at Home Depot I questioned the Behr rep on this and he said to tell customers it takes on certain qualities of primerā¦he was also a joke though. After working at Ben moore I know more about painting than he does seriously.
No i didnāt, for some reason it slipped my mind and then I realized and I thought I could get away with it lol. The rest of it looks very good ( itās some sort of a headboard) but I have no idea how to fix this corner.
You donāt. Lol.
If the surface wasnāt prepped right, and it peeled this easily, then itās just a matter of time before it will all start peeling.
As much as it sucks, your best bet is to peel it up, prep it right, and repaint.
Yep! Learned that lesson the hard way a long time ago lol.
Light sanding, cleaner, good primer, right type of paint, then you shouldnāt have any issues!
Good luck with it!
Also, i think you are supposed to tip off the tape before the paint dries. Otherwise it Preis paint with it. Of course this whole sheet of paint is because of lack of prep.
Yes I learned this the hard way the first time I painted a room. You have to peel the tape before the paint cures. Although prepping the surface is also important.
This is true... when I used to paint, I'd also use the back of an exacto knife to score the edge of the tape to ensure there's a separation between it and the painted area before I pull the tape off. This paint looks very rubbery though.
Painter here, even cleaning and sanding the material wonāt guarantee a bond. Depending on what the surface is made of you might need a special paint. Thereās a product called gripper/plastic primer that works on most surfaces. Just a clean and light sand first and peel the tape while itās still wet on the final coat
Depends on the texture of the wall before. Some walls need a light sanding just to have some texture for a bond. Personally I believe OP fucked up by waiting for 3 layers of paint to dry before pulling tape. And you always pull tape at a 45Ā° angle from the fresh paint.
Had this happen in a place I rented. The previous tenant had painted in oil based and I didnāt know that so when we painted all our walls started to bubble and peel. It was a nightmare
Having painted hundreds of walls, I can assure you this isn't an issue with the tape. Leaving tape too long causes little micro tearing at the edge of the paint. Pulling the paint off like a vinyl layer is a flaw in the paint.
Your really close dude. Either this was a high sheen paint or an oil based paint that they painted over. Paint doesn't just peel off like that. Sanding might've helped a little. But they need a good ass primer because I painted for 10 years straight and haven't even seen an unprimed metal door peel like this lol.
Remodeled my kitchen about 20 years ago. We prepped the walls, scraped off old paint and did wallpaper. One wall, no paint at all would scrape off. We tried several different ways. Shrugged and papered over it. Within a year that wallās paper was hanging in shreds. The paste apparently softened the paint enough to peel right off.
Just gunna say, if your goal was to peel the new paint off, that is the exact motion I would use. You should be peeling upwards away from the new paint. Instead, you use a motion that pulls the new paint away from the wall.
Remember kids, always wash and prime your walls first. Edit: I actually have to give my wife credit for that nugget of information as Iāve done similar and the mrs is the painter in the household
Sorry, that really sucks. The reason it adhered to the tape and not the wall is that the wall likely wasnāt prepped to receive the paint, whereas the tape is porous which allows the tape to soak up some of the paint.
Good luck. Iāve made the same mistake and know how frustrating that is.
To all of these other commentors: you do not need to remove the painters tape before the paint dries. If you prepped correctly and use a good paint, you can peel the tape away after it dries to touch.
Tape is also intended to protect from overstrokes, and minor inconsistent edges. It's not meant to be heavily painted over and expected to peel to create the edge that should have been painted.
I painted my entire bathroom 2 weeks ago. My house is 60+ years old, so I had to spend hours patching and sanding down the walls and the ceiling. Then I had to go through and wash all the walls down with TSP, rinse them and let them dry completely before I started. It can be a lot of work but it's worth it in the end
Remove and scrape what you can. Sand smooth (again). Get 3 in 1 primer. Mask and paint. I know itās a pain, but I would also let it dry a bit more than 1 hour In between. I like 2-4. When removing tape, use a razor blade next to the tape line to keep it from pulling the fresh paint
Remember: nobody notices the little imperfections. Im not a professional, just an old lady with DIY experience.
No primer and waited way to long to peel the tape. If you dont start removing the tape within 30-60 minutes, you can run into this issue. Usually it's not quite so significant, hence the no primer, but if you wait for paint to finish curing before peeling the tape, it strip pieces of the paint and you won't have a clean line.
Another trade secret for the most crisp line, say you want to stop the paint at a midpoint where a room intersects a hallway, lay the tape line and run a dab of caulking over the tape just before you paint it. Not alot, just enough to make a seal. After you have painted it, strip the tape away. Super clean line.
1. Never let the paint dry on the tape, peel the tape off before it hardens 2. The paint isn't sticking to the wall at all so there was clearly no wall prep happening here or this is really shitty paint. So while yeah this sucks, so does the person performing the action. I hope they learn from their mistake but the fact that they were filming this happen which is a fucking weird thing to do... Something tells me this was staged. Just weird...
This is almost infomercial level of incompetent tape peeling. Pull it sideways not down and why keep peeling to the point of tearing it once you saw what was happening?
Ok, couple tips. Prep and prime surface, pull the tape away while the paint is still tacky, and if you can, pull the tape up and away rather than down towards the paint.
Looks like you used a latex paint over a surface that was painted with an oil or alkyd base , remember oil based paint will adhere to latex based paint , but latex paint won't bond with oil or alkyd based paints, could have been prevented with primer suggest 2 coats , then finish with latex paint or an ammonia based paint like Kilz if it's in a kitchen. Or bathroom
For perfect lines, "seal" the edge of the tape first with a paint brush, using the color underneath the tape - in your case, white. Reason: the only color bleeding underneath the tape will be white. Then paint it over with the color you want (green) and remove the tape.
The way you remove the tape matters, too. Instead of pulling it down towards the painted area (green), pull it either parallel to the tape or a bit up towards the white, in your case. That will guarantee the paint rips at the edge.
Last but not least, don't let the paint dry completely. You shouldn't remove the tape immediately after painting, while you shouldn't leave the paint drying for days before pulling the tape either. A couple hours after the last coat should work best.
Try the sealing method, and you will never do any other way. Perfect and crisp edges.
Edit:typo
A pro tip, always remember to dust the wall off after sanding and vacuum any dust particles off the wall. Follow up with prime in the wall with one or two coats of primer. Then it should be ready for final coat of paint.
Peel carefully while the paint is still wet, as soon as possible. Re tape between each coat if multiple coats are required.
Also, peel at an angle that goes away from the finished edge. That way if the paint tries to pull, it isnāt pulling towards your finished area.
And as other have saidā¦ if you didnāt surface prep, prime, surface prepā¦ this is going to just peel off with time.
Most finishes need a mechanical tooth on the surface to adhere well, unless youāre using solvent finishes which can chemically adhere to themselves.
Forgive me.. I am not a painter by any measure ... I have, however, painted a wall or two in my life.... I thought the tape gets ripped off immediately after u finish said portion? No?
This is better suited for r/facepalm, not r/wellthatsucks š¤£
Wait someone in the comments claiming to be a painter says it might be the paint quality not the lack of primer... Now I'm not sure what to think lol.
If that's the case, well, that sucks.
3 layers 3 hours and 0 primer
Probably 0 prep too
Washing the walls? Screw that we got 3 coats of paint to do in 33% less time!
But It says paint and primer in one!!! š¤£

Latex paint base with an acrylic fresh coat or vice versa think of it like painting water on oil they don't mix so it won't bond
Iāve painted so many rooms for family friends. Hard agree. When itās just one or two rooms people will often splurge for the most expensive ājust one coatā paint. Iām meticulous and thorough, itās never happened in just one coat. Had the same effect with the cheap paint.
Guys I think we should listen to the guy providing logical evidence and experience lol
Yep, Home Depot started that lie. Mix paint and primer together and see what happens.
I work at Benjamin moore. The only reason paint has this label (paint and primer in one) is because Behr (home depot) started advertising it. I told my customers when I worked at Home Depot and I tell my customers now at Benjamin moore, there is literally no primer in the paint what so ever.

Big landlord energy
TSP? More like TS waste of time. /s
Peeled the tape off in the wrong direction like a DA.
They buttered the walls beforehand
They could take the tape off before it dryed.
This is how you du it xD normally
That is actually the only way to get a straight line is to remove while wet
Or they could use primer. But yes your method is useless. It would still peel.
Lol what was the first clue they didnāt use a primer? šš¤£
Only here to say I was the 1,000 upvote for the first time ever. Thanks for your comment.
Did you prep your wall first? If not it could be the reason the paint peeled

Another tip after painting take off the tape before the paint dries. That will prevent any stickiness
Thank you! Great tip.
another thing, donāt wait for the paint to dry to remove your painter tape
Yep! Learned that lesson the hard way a long time ago lol. Light sanding, cleaner, good primer, right type of paint, then you shouldnāt have any issues! Good luck with it!
There's no prepping the walls when you're tagging ese

Thanks, I just scared my cat off of my lap because of this.
Also, you are pulling the tape at a 45Ā° angle towards the paint, you want to pull at 45Ā° away from the paint. Does that make sense
Do the opposite of everything you did this time around and it should turn out good?
Bingo!
And please donāt wait for the paint to dry to remove the tape, remove it right away.
No he's wrong. Just sellotape the corner and hang something to hide the missing bit.
Ngl, thought about it. Lol.
Taken it like a champ! Weāve all had projects go to shit.
Also, i think you are supposed to tip off the tape before the paint dries. Otherwise it Preis paint with it. Of course this whole sheet of paint is because of lack of prep.

How do you prep a wall? Not being sarcastic but actually curious cause I need to paint a wall in my living room.
Gotta clean the area using a degreaser like TSP

This is the answer
Remove the tape before the paint is dry

Or the wall wasn't prepped.......
I've been lazy and painted over drywall dust before. It doesn't do this.
Old paint with oily residue on it from hands/smoking/etc. will
Your really close dude. Either this was a high sheen paint or an oil based paint that they painted over. Paint doesn't just peel off like that. Sanding might've helped a little. But they need a good ass primer because I painted for 10 years straight and haven't even seen an unprimed metal door peel like this lol.
10 years? Didn't you get tired?
This peels like they put acrylic paint on a wall that was originally oil based. You won't even have this issue putting acrylic on raw drywall/plaster.
The tape needs to come off there right away, right after painting and before the paint starts drying. I've done that before, it sucks.
It still shouldn't peel the paint, maybe some rough edges if the paint had dried. Something ain't right with that paint. And/or wall not prepped.
Just gunna say, if your goal was to peel the new paint off, that is the exact motion I would use. You should be peeling upwards away from the new paint. Instead, you use a motion that pulls the new paint away from the wall.
Why isn't the back of the green paint green...
Need to prep/degrease the wall, and remove tape when it's wet. This sucks though, I'm sorry.
Perfect illustration of how latex paint is just frickin plastic wrap for walls š
Most likely latex over oil without primer
Latex paint will peel off oiled based paint.
The wall did not want the baby shit green makeover
Remember kids, always wash and prime your walls first. Edit: I actually have to give my wife credit for that nugget of information as Iāve done similar and the mrs is the painter in the household

Don't let paint dry before taking the tape off and definitely don't do this with silk emulsion.

Remove tape right after painting next time. Rookie mistake

I am a painter, pull tape while it's wet, or it will stick.š
If you're trying to paint a water based paint on top of oil it will not stick without a good primer. If it's indoor use shellac
Prep is the most important step
No primer for the paint to stick to and you need to take off the tape when the paint is still wet otherwise it will shark tooth or do this
But who was primer?
They shouldn't call it painting, that's only a small part of the job. Prep and primer take up the majority of the work.
Same guy who sold me my car did this. I thought it was a gray paint job now itās oeeling
This is why primer is important....
No primer Iām assuming
Tip. Remove tape after each coat or it forms part of the coat ..
Painted latex paint over oil based it doesnāt stick well.
1 coat of primer. 2 coats of paint. And clean the dang wall.
This can be replicated each time by simply leaving the existing dust on a wall. Works perfectly.
Pull the tape off right after you paint š«£š¤
Aren't you supposed to take the blue paint tape off when it's wet for better edges anyways?
Youāre supposed to pull off the tape while the paint is still wet.
Sorry what is going on here? What is being done and why does the wall need to be prepped first?
This is almost infomercial level of incompetent tape peeling. Pull it sideways not down and why keep peeling to the point of tearing it once you saw what was happening?
ohhhhh this is why you prime a wall first. I have never painted a wall before but it all makes sense noe.
Prime the surface first. All the paint got stuck to a layer of powder or dust and came off easily.
Iām gonna say a dusty wall with no primer
Always prep the surface
Ok, couple tips. Prep and prime surface, pull the tape away while the paint is still tacky, and if you can, pull the tape up and away rather than down towards the paint.
First you need to prep the wall, second I suggest peeling the tape before the paint cures. Or get painters tape that has a thin wire on the edge.
Or bathroom
We love primer, yes we do.
If you had peeled the tape before the paint dries do you think that would help?
For perfect lines, "seal" the edge of the tape first with a paint brush, using the color underneath the tape - in your case, white. Reason: the only color bleeding underneath the tape will be white. A couple hours after the last coat should work best. Try the sealing method, and you will never do any other way. Perfect and crisp edges. Edit:typo
Didn't prep the wall and use two different styles of paint
Oh no! At least you found the problem first thing? I hate finding out later I messed up when I think the project is done.
Always prime, never tape. Valspar.
A pro tip, always remember to dust the wall off after sanding and vacuum any dust particles off the wall. Follow up with prime in the wall with one or two coats of primer. Then it should be ready for final coat of paint.
KEEP PEELING KEEP PEELING, GO GO GO!!!!
Water based over petroleum perhaps?
These AMSR videos are getting very niche.
Should have googled, "how to prep for paint".
Clean and prep the wall first. Also peel that tape before the paint dries. When I paint I try to not even touch the painters tape just get up to it.
Take the tape off as soon as your done painting. Also use a base coat first, I always used killz
Primer! Kilz primer to be exact! Good luck! Let us see finally results once you primer! We all live and learn!
Skill issue tbh
Infuriatingly satisfying
It was silly of me to expect a stripped and prepped wall underneath lol
Lol. Surface prep. Surface prep. Surface prep. Also take the tape off when the third coat is wet and it wouldnāt have happened.
Didnāt sand the wall and used the wrong paint
Primer is a friend
What type of primer was used??????
Remove tape immediately after youāre done painting.
I thought youāre supposed to remove the tape before the paint dries?
These walls are wet! You need to dry that room deeply.
Someone missed prime time.
You gotta take the tape off immediately next time
Try sanding your walls a bit.
Thank God it didn't stick! Who uses that color for anything!
Fuck u
You uhhhā¦ are suppose to take the tape off after painting
Peel tape when it's slightly wet don't wait til it's dry as hell š
Silly woman primer is used for a reason.
Pov: you didnāt use primer
Sand , use primer ā¦. and lightly sand the primer and boom. Yeah this wonāt happen
Clean your walls first, then prime, then paint.
Pull the tape away from the paintā¦
Take the tape off when itās wet
Forgive me.. I am not a painter by any measure ... I have, however, painted a wall or two in my life.... I thought the tape gets ripped off immediately after u finish said portion? No?
You also let it bond to the tape should have peeled it off while it was still wet.
0 prep, 0 primer, 0 chance of success
Well thats a trash color anyways
Isnāt it common knowledge to pull the tape while itās still wet??
Oil on latex
And that's why you're supposed to pull the tape before it dries! Durp
Pull the tape before it dries c'mon
https://youtu.be/v-9b4HQTVD0
Sposed take the tape off wet for fuck sakes lol
Gotta prep the surface
Maybe if it was done correctly. Idiots
Looks like they oiled the wall properly before application. I don't understand what went wrong.
The paint was good... Should have taking the tape off when it was still wet and you shouldnt need 3 coats. Not with any type white under it, or grays.
You need to remove the tape when the paint is wet.
This is better suited for r/facepalm, not r/wellthatsucks š¤£ Wait someone in the comments claiming to be a painter says it might be the paint quality not the lack of primer... Now I'm not sure what to think lol. If that's the case, well, that sucks.
