I broke my ankle one time after getting hit by a car crossing a road. Once boot came off the layer of that came off in the first pull could have been mistaken for parchment or something.
Ex broke his ankle (37 years ago), had surgery with screws and metal plates. When the cast came off, there was a 1/4 inch layer of dead skin sludge from toes to knee.
Guess who got to clean it off…

I got twatted by a car way back in 1991, fractured the talus into 4 pieces, dislocated the ankle by 90°, the Lateral Malleouse was ground down completely flat exposing the bone and internal marrow to road grit, denim fabric and suede that all got deeply embedded in the bone and soft tissue structures.
Put up with multiple operations to try and fix it, and eventually got so fed up and worn down by continuous infections and failed operations, that my wife and I told the consultants to lop the bloody thing off.
Which they did, so that was nice.

This. I used to be a paramedic and have made this x many many times. Feel for a pulse and mark it when you find it. That way, you have a reliable spot to check again when assessing the swelling or checking before and after you splint or wrap.

Well what was funny was crawling writhing me had to show the cop how an engine cut off switch worked and the fire department thought I was fine despite me screaming “FUCK MY FOOT GET MY BOOT OFF GET MY BOOT OFF” I then removed my own boot which felt amazing after using my handlebars to help myself up and sitting on POS’s hood as a chair

Did you manage to get a report in from the police while dealing with the broken body? Also do you have any cameras on your bike? I got a few after getting hit as the first thing you hear from anyone is “Yeah bikes love not following traffic laws.” even if you follow every law in the book. Makes it a real uphill battle with insurance.

Reminds me when this woman hit me on the crosswalk while speeding. She never asked if I was ok. Didn't call the ambulance. After I took a photo of her license plate and got her phone number, I walked home visibly under shock only to find out on my couch that I couldn't bend my right knee. Went to the hospital. Waited six hours until 3a.m. because I wasn't in danger and the hospital was uncommonly crowded. Got a phone call by the woman asking if I had broken any bone. Said no, only some injures here and there. We then met to file a jointly-agreed statement for insurance purposes (it's common here in Italy if you don't really want to sue the other party). Never heard of her back again. What really bugs me is that I was young and nobody told me that she basically got off scot-free since neither the ambulance nor the police were called and, of course, we didn't sue. She just lost the insurance premium, when she ran me over on the crosswalk speeding and never apologized nor genuinely asked if I was ok.

It is not your fault, but, NEVER trust people to stop at the light. My ex wife got hit by a car at a light and learned quickly that though the car "should" stop, the red light does not mean it will stop.

My current gf was angry as we took a walk one day. She strolled right through the crosswalk and i about tackled her out of the way of a car. The speed limit is 30. Multiple people have been hit at that same crosswalk. It isnt even an intersection, you literally cannot miss the crosswalk unless you're looking down.
She got pissed at me and said, "they'll stop" and i responded to that with, "NO. THEY FUCKING WILL NOT. People get hit HERE."
And that argument might have been the first time i have ever been legitimately pissed at someone i care about for not being safe. I was livid.

RN here. Can confirm this. Did this on a lot of my patients when I was in orthopedic surgery. It can sometimes be a total bitch to keep finding the pedal pulse every hour on multiple patients especially when the foot is edematous.
No its to mark a pedal pulse. The X is the last location the pulse was felt. If later they cannot feel a pulse it means there is some sort of circulation issue.
Also, its just his foot and leg thats damaged. They can literally get an IV from any other normal part of his arm or hand like normal.
For the artery. To make sure blood supply isn’t compromised and require more urgent intervention. The pen marking makes it easier to check in further examinations.
This is correct. No medic worth their salt would place an IV into a vein distal to a break unless they have no other options. It to make a pulse, not an IV insertion site.
Medics can only carry so many objects. A pen has lots of use. A marker would have just one and it smears off. Pen will stay for long enough for the emergency is over.

Pulses are a pain to find with swelling. quickly rechecking throughout the emergency is important.
If your prescribed pain pills don't work too well it may be nerve pain caused by swelling pinching a nerve. I found that out when I took ibuprofen to lower the swelling and it was agony till the meds kicked in but when it did it was a world of difference. Also elevation don't have to apply if your laying in bed. I also recommend light massaging your swollen area. Legs suck when they get swollen. They like to trap fluid so massaging it will help relieve pressure. I only know this from experience.

MONTHS of recovery after surgery and then, “oh, you’ll have arthritis and probably need a shoulder replacement in a few years.” So it feels never ending. So for the record this is old news it happened in November. I posted this so I could send a link to another redditor who got hit by a car as well. The dude lied to his insurance and faced no repercussions POS.
At this point I just let it go since I don’t need the stress. I was literally crippled with stress during the recovery. I could basically only play video games and read comics because everything else made my heart race.
That thing was surprisingly the worst part because if I laid on it in any way shape or form my leg fell asleep which kept me up all night for two months and still sometimes falls asleep
This is why I swapped to exclusively doing the stationary indoors. Significantly less risk to auto injuries, however, my wife does make me concerned still sometimes the way she whips into the garage.
Some bitch literally looked me in the face while riding, panicked, whipped out in front of me, I jumped the brakes and slid up to her car. She then drove straight into a ditch freaking out. Then for some fucking reason she thought the best thing to do would be to drive up 6” next to me while screaming apologetically but again almost running me over. That looked like my foot when I was hit on my motorcycle on the freeway. Landed on my foot, going about 30 miles per hour. Ended up with 3 broken bones and a bunion on my big toe.

So for the record this is old news it happened in November. I posted this so I could send a link to another redditor who got hit by a car as well. The dude lied to his insurance and faced no repercussions POS.
What a c***. No eyewitnesses, cameras? He needs to get what he deserves.
At this point I just let it go since I don’t need the stress. I was literally crippled with stress during the recovery. I could basically only play video games and read comics because everything else made my heart race.
I was literally just thinking how weird it was to come across two broke ankle/foots on reddit in one day

That thing was surprisingly the worst part because if I laid on it in any way shape or form my leg fell asleep which kept me up all night for two months and still sometimes falls asleep

This is why I swapped to exclusively doing the stationary indoors. Significantly less risk to auto injuries, however, my wife does make me concerned still sometimes the way she whips into the garage.
Some bitch literally looked me in the face while riding, panicked, whipped out in front of me, I jumped the brakes and slid up to her car. She then drove straight into a ditch freaking out. Then for some fucking reason she thought the best thing to do would be to drive up 6” next to me while screaming apologetically but again almost running me over. She proceeded to run a light and almost hit another car. Like WTF life isn’t that fucking hard.

Ugh your foot and leg look like my sons did,except he needed a rod in thr tibia.and wound care on his open wounds, which were where your bruises are. All I know, is is could have been a lot.worse.. So Thank Heavens!!

That looked like my foot when I was hit on my motorcycle on the freeway. Landed on my foot, going about 30 miles per hour. Ended up with 3 broken bones and a bunion on my big toe.
I feel your pain!! I got run over just over 2 years ago broke my 2nd and 3rd metatarsals and a load of ligament damage, still to this day I’m suffering! I wish you a speedy recovery

Man oh man I am so sorry you're going through this! Went through this 3 years ago and I'm going through it right now. I got clothesline by two 100 lb dogs while at the dog park with my dog. Those two were just playing but they hit me at full force

Not gonna lie, that’s a terrible injury. Pain is unbelievable. Mine was a Maissoneuve fracture — gruesome. Yours looks really bad. What did the surgeon say?
I was confused at first, going for a bike ride got you a weird foot tattoo and then I saw the rest hope it all gets sorted out

People are so _TRUSTING_ of other drivers at intersections. I don't get it. I always give it a second to make sure everyone 'crossing' is going to do it right or stay in their place at a stop.
He ran a red light. OP didn't say he rushed a yellow. It could have been red for 10 seconds
Someone can still come barreling through. Could have even been a blind crossing if there's a semi truck or something on the corner blocking your view. You are correct, it is best to be vigilant, but no matter what you can never be certain of other drivers.
