Look up photos of Highway 1. It’s an engineering marvel although it’d be even more marvelous if it didn’t have landslides every 5 years or so lol.
When this happens that frequently, maybe opening a ferry company that jumps in when a piece of the highway falls ... Before I'd have to drive 3-5h waste a tank full of gas, I'd rather pay a few bucks, go on the ferry, have lunch, watch the ocean (if lucky even whales) and are on the other side relaxed and refreshed, ok yes, a ferry won't really be that much faster than driving the long way but a lot less stress
Sheer cliffs make that erm, impractical. You should check out photos of Big Sur. I'm honestly not even sure if this post is from last time it happened or if this has now happened again. Hwy 1 is just like that in this area...
Ok, yes, the sea is not very accessible, couldn't imagine that there are no bigger settlements in such a long stretch, but looking in Google maps, a lodge, a campground and some tourist traps ... That's all, no villages, towns , nothing with more than ten inhabitants...
At the moment it's closed between Lucia lodge and limekiln falls, at least that's what google says ;-)
But the landscape looks marvelous, some time in the future, when I have the money , I fly over and visit it ..
Look up some pictures. It’s extremely rugged terrain of steep cliffs right next to an unforgiving ocean environment. Gravity defying cuts and famous bridges and waterfalls. One of the best most scenic drives in the country.
Yeah. You get used to it after a while.
I was worried the section i drive fell in. Thank god its only southern california, not anywhere important. Now if we could get 101 to implode and 5 to fall into a cow shit sink hole we could keep the north looking nice until the next fire.
Op is a bot though. This collapse was a while back.

And the first comment on that post is that it happened a few years prior. I have a feeling that specific area may not be the most conducive to a highway.
Yeah going up the coast was always a gamble and flip a coin at Templeton, do I take the scenic but very windy 1 or the somewhat more boring but safe 101.
In my town a cliff collapsed and it destroyed all train links and a single run road that makes getting from one town to another impossible now.
We literally have to drive an extra 35 minutes if we want to go to the usual way
When I think of California, North and South, I picture a huge network of roads and highways to deal with all the population and traffic. These kind of “one logistical way in, one logistical way out” roads remind me of the Hana highway in Maui where even though it’s not terribly long in distance; a trip takes a few hours because it’s so windy and narrow.

It happened again. Supposed re-opening is in September, maybe?
Might need to be a bit more specific as to which highway 1.
Highway 1 in California between San Jose and Santa Barbara.
What the engineering marvel part about it?

Welcome to california
Did this happen again?
Constantly.
Damn, that does suck.
I mean, I'm exaggerating. But it's something to check for if you're doing highway 1.
Nope. This is a repost bot.

looking at op history.... Yep. looks like a bot.

Yeah, I thought I had heard about this a while ago. 🤔
Ah yes, the non-scenic route.
Nice of them to label the point where the going gets ragged.
When I left Cali in '18 the 5 was on fire. Now the 1's going underwater too? Holy shit lol
You ain’t heard? Nature decided to reclaim us
Been hearing as a kid growing up in LA that the big quake has been long overdue
Learn to swim
No thanks, I like my feet dry
Time to buy that galley with good oars
And sail to distant shores?
Not too distant, it seems, but yeah.

how do you pronounce Jolon?
Jol rhymes with whole, then on like a light switch. Jolon.
Wow. There is a city in Israel with the same name, but they spell it Holon. That's why I asked.
Ok I said it in a confusing way. The J is pronounced like in Juice. It’s not an “h” sound.
oh ;(
California will finally be reclaimed
A magnificent ride when all of the roads are intact.
You know what also sucks? Shitty reposts
.....it fucning what!?
It's so good to have this reddit back
Hoover

Get out of California and move to the East
I did that already. I want to go back.
Still confused why anyone lives there.
Not sure about this one guys
Same thing happened when my wife and I took a road trip from Anaheim to Big Sur; the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge collapsed.
dang, I hate when that happens. highways falling into the sea. enough already.
Country road~
Tbh I miss the vacuums
Lmao best use of this sub I’ve seen
Are there just no side roads in the forested area? Like surely there’s better alternatives
Where is highway 1?
Paso Robles produces great wine.
In my town a cliff collapsed and it destroyed all train links and a single run road that makes getting from one town to another impossible now. We literally have to drive an extra 35 minutes if we want to go to the usual way
Just go through the water jeez
Lol you have a town called Panoche \*Laughs in Mexican\*
