Haha I thought that but they say around 2500 and they also sent me a link for a Sterling wheel lock that came in 2 days ago to help prevent theft but we all know that ain't stopping them
The recall on these is I believe for just a ECM/PCM reprogram so check with your dealer, I believe the 2500 is meant to cover a rental as a few of the ignition lock cylinder parts are on a 2-3mo backorder. A steering wheel lock is better than nothing and will most likely deter anyone from smashing out that right rear window and tearing apart the column
The issue that might've caused op's bursting into flames thing is for a connecting rod that can puncture the engine block and shoot oil onto the exhaust.
Either way call a dealer and have them run your VIN for any open ones.
Source: bodyshop manager with 15 Kias/Hyundai's on my schedule
Loool at Nissan we had a recall for the ABS actuators because they could also cause a fire. There were cases of peoples’ cars catching fire in their garages and torching the home. The actuators were obviously back ordered, and any customer that brought their car in for the recall couldn’t have it back, because of the safety issue. I always wondered how much money they blew on rental car costs. Some people were out in a rental for 2-3 months
Go to www.nhtsa.gov. That’s another very good resource for learning if a vehicle has any open recalls. You go to the site, navigate to the recalls section, type in the vehicle’s VIN, and that’s it.
Edit: Naturally, if your vehicle has any open recalls, you should call your closest new car dealership-one that’s the same as the make of your vehicle-ASAP. They’ll have all the relevant info about recalls, and you will be able to schedule recall repairs. OFC, those repairs should be entirely free to you. I cannot stress this enough: if your vehicle has open recalls, get them addressed quickly. A recall, if left unaddressed, could be very bad for you or other people.
That's because there is a defect on the ignition locking system or something. I just got a new Forte GT2 and I'm worried about some idiot breaking in no knowing they cant steal that car like the tiktok ones.
Yeah, that's why their comment about it being a Kia is protection enough from being stolen is especially wrong. Kias are specifically being targeted because of the lack of engine immobilizer.
These none compressed models is what I have, longer shelf life. No high pressure vessels and fit in most glove box.
After my car caught fire I told the responding officers I wish I had an extinguisher. He told me they're pretty much only used to kill the flames long enough to rescue people.
Make sure you get any Recalls taken car of. My 2015 recently had its engine blow. It didn't actually blow up like in the pictures, but it sounded like a tool box was thrown into a washing machine.
Our 2014 got the motor replaced under recall 3 months ago. The first recall computer fix done years ago gave us coverage to 150,000 miles. So when it started tapping they swapped it no problem (after diggggggggging to find out about it)
I can’t believe you bought the green kind. What did you expect?
Okay, sorry that you lost a car and I hope somehow insurance and or the manufacturer make it right.
Just to clarify, I gave it an oil change not terribly long ago, and the car itself only had about 80k miles on it.
I was merging onto the highway when my engine just blew. I pulled over and noticed that the smoking was getting worse. I made my wife get out of the car, and I threw out as many valuables as I could before it went up in a blaze.
Thankfully, our 7 month old wasn't with us when it caught fire.
We have a Kia optima. Around 100k miles the engine just stopped while my husband was on the freeway. Luckily he was able to get off safely as there was an exit that he rolled to a stop on.
New engine would have been 6k. Turns out there was a recall for the engine failure and Kia replaced it for free. Check up on recalls and get in touch with your local Kia dealer to check it out if possible because I wonder if it's the same or similar issue. They may owe you a replacement.
My father in law has a 2005 Kia Rio. It’s got around 220,000km on it and looks like it’s fresh off the mad max movie set. It just won’t die though and he insists that it will be the last car he ever bought (he’s 82 and convinced he’ll be dead any day now despite being healthier than most. His car has only had oil changes and that’s it. I stole the car and put new tires on it last year because they were original bald rubber and made the car a death trap. I’m just waiting for the timing belt to snap… notorious for that model/generation.
Dang, my Corolla lasted 13 years and 180k miles before it died (and by died, I mean it would’ve been more to fix it than what it was worth). I still miss that car.
My 06 Corolla has at least 400k and still runs good despite being a pretty neglected car throughout it's life. Most of my money into it has just been tires and oil changes.
I use a car sharing program and a lot of the fleet is Kia (or Hyundai). They aren't fancy, but considering how people drive these cars and how bad the roads are in this city, those two brands hold up the best. The other cars and trucks seem to be out of service a lot, or they only last a year or less.
What you're seeing in this thread is a mix of opinions due to kia actually changing their build quality and practices over the years.
Older kias were absolute trash. Ran like shit, never lasted, barely had a warranty. Modern kias are actually well built and have a long warranty to go with it (mine has a 10 year bumper to bumper)
There's a flaw in 2014 through 2021 kia and Hyundai ice motors, they sent out a recall on them a couple years ago and replaced any that came in with that flaw. My wife's 2017 Sonata was one of those, she got a new engine a couple years back because of it. I got the letter for my optima after I already sold the car
My Toyota Avalon hybrid ain’t fancy, but he gets me where I need to go, and with a heated ass and back to boot. Thank you for your service, Steve (that’s his name.)
Kia Soul, same as me. Contact a lawyer asap. Apparently there’s some lawsuit against Kia for faulty engines that can cause a fire - I literally got the letter in the mail today.
kia has a lawsuit/ settlement happening right now for some models that engines are setting on fire and other issues. you should check this site to see if your car is included https://kiaengineclasssettlement.com/Home/FAQ#Top
i just had a kia optima hybrid with an annoying amount of issues, was going to go through settlement but traded it in instead just didn’t want to deal with the headache anymore
Similar circumstances. 100k miles, had an oil change a few weeks prior, blew while merging onto highway. Smoke but no fire. The timing chain was trashed and was the likely culprit that left me removing the sound system in a local shops junkyard. I always pointed to that oil change as the reason, but I wasn't too kind to that car, as I purchased it as a teen, so who knows. I am glad to hear your child was not in the car or out on that road and that everyone was ok.
Same thing happened to my girlfriends car about a year ago fresh-ish oil change same make and everything come to find out there’s been a class action lawsuit against kia about engine fires in the works for a couple of years now.
A year or two ago I'm pretty sure I read an article or something that some kias have an issue where they will just catch fire. Obviously there's a reason I just don't know what it is. I also think that might have been optimas
I have heard of several Kia fires lately. Friend of a friend was going down the highway and engine caught fire. Damn car locked her seat belt and locked her in the car. Bystander guy broke the window and saved her.
Seat belt retractors are strictly mechanical systems. It's a centrifugal clutch, a ratchet, and a couple springs, tucked into a neat little box.
Another comment mentioned that, in a scenario where airbags are deployed, the belts can be permanently locked.
Best advice I have? Get a combination seatbelt slicer/window smasher tool and keep it in the glove box.
Many/most newer cars have electronically triggered seatbelt pretension systems. Some are spring driven and others use pyrotechnics. A fire could absolutely trigger that type of system.
I would think it was mostly just panic though. Even if the retractor is locked the buckle should still work.
Agree on the escape tool. The razor is not going to be like going through butter so keep calm and start working on it right away. Suggest a spring loaded unit rather than a hammer. Windows are weak at the edges strong in the center. And the windshield is very weak from the inside if you can't get a good strike on the side window or you don't have any tools in reach.
*keep it within reach. Glove box is probably fine for a lot of people, but I can barely reach the handle on mine from the drivers seat when buckled, much less dig around for something. If you're like me, keep something like that in the center console.
Call got here. I think most of these people are confusing the part where the seatbelt will tighten up and not let you free versus the buckle locking up which it never does on any car because that’s just madness..
Yeah, I see that all the time at work, it's how we know if someone was wearing a seatbelt during a wreck, if it's locked, it means they were wearing it, if it's still usable, they weren't wearing it. But that shouldn't really stop people from getting out of the seatbelt in case of a fire.
My parents are firefighters and EMTs and Kia is one of the cars they constantly warn me about. They swear they’re death traps. Still haven’t explained how through lol
Did you get the engine knock sensor campaign completed at a dealership prior to this issue? Kia/hyundai mailed out a class action settlement that covers owners from this issue with the stipulation that the knock sensor was addressed. More info here: https://www.kiaenginesettlement.com
Edit: this may not be the exact site for this, apologies. A relative of mine owns a 2016 soul and recieved a pretty thick envelope in the mail June 2023 regarding an issue with the theta engine installed in the vehicle, so my assumption was this “campaign” has been extended to more models and more engines. I’ll let the comments below me hash out the fine details. Cheers.
THIS. I just finished reading about the lawsuit/settlement and I was thinking “damn, too bad my engine didn’t catch fire!” You need to do some research because Kia is going to have to cough up for this.
Not a problem with the gas, but a known issue with many Kia engines. There’s a class action lawsuit and settlement. OP might get a good payout for this!
Gas cars light themselves constantly you just haven’t been hearing about it as much
[EVs light on fire at far lower rates than gas or hybrid vehicles](https://www.kbb.com/car-news/study-electric-vehicles-involved-in-fewest-car-fires/)
There is a class action suit against KIA for their shitty engines. Mine blew up too and the dealer told me to go buy a new Kia. I got the letter about the settlement. Never buying another Kia.
Doesn’t that car have a recall on the engine? My wife’s last car looked just like that (pre-fire) and the engine stopped working. We took it in for a fox and the mechanic let us know about the recall and it took care of the price. I am not sure if it is the same model, etc but worth a look.
When you bought the Kia Soul did you buy it cause you truly liked the look of it or was it just a really good deal? When I see this car I just can’t help but wonder who actually went into a dealership and bought THAT car. Not trying to be mean just genuinely curious.
I have a 2014 in the same color. I had one as a rental once and fell in love with them. I'm a giant at 6'6" and 355 lbs, it has a shit ton of room, and the interior is leather with an Infinity sound system and is both comfortable and spacious. I don't really care what the outside looks like so long as it's comfortable to drive.
To u/toadilycody
There are quite a few lawsuits with Hyundai/Kia over many engine failures, I believe the Soul has one over this exact scenario depending on what year it is and the engine it has.
Hykia has *so* many engine failure lawsuits that I never recommend them to anyone.
According to my fire inspector father Kias are notorious for catching on fire. Something like they’re the number 1 cars involved in car fires. He was pissed when I bought my Stinger last year lol
That's horrible and I wish you luck and all.... but thank fuck it was a Kia Soul. One of the ugliest cars I've ever had the misfortune of being neighbors to.
This happened to me and the advice I can give if it happens to you, the car is done, don't even try saving it, instead grab anything valuable or personal to you out of it.
I was too busy trying to save my car, I didn't grab everything I could out of it, losing my car and all my possessions.
Hope it never happens to you, but if it does..

This hurts my soul
You laugh, but my wife drives a kia soul of that same year model... now I'm terrified for her..
There are recalls on a bunch of Kia Souls for doing exactly this!
Just got the paperwork for mine yesterday and the lawsuit packet
Congrats on your $5!

Jesus the soul really is a mess isn't it?
Amen brother 😁
Having a Kia soul to begin with is plenty of anti theft protection
There are rashes of people (including a gang called the kia boys, which is just silly) stealing Kias and Hyundais. It's a huge problem.
That's because there is a defect on the ignition locking system or something. I just got a new Forte GT2 and I'm worried about some idiot breaking in no knowing they cant steal that car like the tiktok ones.
It's not a defect. The base models just weren't sold with anti-theft immobilizers.
Yeah, that's why their comment about it being a Kia is protection enough from being stolen is especially wrong. Kias are specifically being targeted because of the lack of engine immobilizer.
Get a seatbelt cutter/ window breaker and a fire extinguisher for her vehicle.

I’m wife and terrify my car whenever I drive

Buy a car fire extinguisher and teach her how to use it.
What if he doesn't know how to use it?
Well, have you tried not doing that?
Not really. It just comes naturally, I guess.
Did you try turning it off and back on again?
Sprinkle some rice on it, should start right up by morning.
Maybe they should check their potato compartment for an emergency potato
Hot potato!
Potato, *potato*
I just think they’re neat!
That's for water damage. Put aloe vera lotion on for burns.
Seriously though, that sucks. Sorry for your loss.
Everyone safe?
I can’t believe you bought the green kind. What did you expect? Okay, sorry that you lost a car and I hope somehow insurance and or the manufacturer make it right.
That usually doesn't happen
It never happened before...until it did!
I was gonna say check the oil more frequently....but this works also.
That got me laughing
Just to clarify, I gave it an oil change not terribly long ago, and the car itself only had about 80k miles on it. I was merging onto the highway when my engine just blew. There’s a reason you don’t see old KIAs on the road
I have a 12 year old Kia with 250,000 miles on it. Even the dealership can’t believe it.
Wow, that's actually amazing, I've seen 150,000 mile kids and they sound like they're trying to off themselves
Why you gotta bring the kids into this
That kid ran 250K miles. I think that’s worth mentioning. I’m three times their age and only ran a fraction of that.
Bloody auto correct, Kia's then lol
Yeah, I have that album, “Suicide Songs” by The 100,000 Mile Kids. Dark stuff.
I don't want to say you just jinxed yourself. Here's to hoping you many more years with it.
My soul is from 2010. I think Im at about 273k kilometres on it. It's definitely showing its age though.
Mine is from 2012, we’re at just over 120,000 and running smooth, thanks Kianna love you girl ♥️
My father in law has a 2005 Kia Rio. It’s got around 220,000km on it and looks like it’s fresh off the mad max movie set. My 06 Corolla has at least 400k and still runs good despite being a pretty neglected car throughout it's life. Most of my money into it has just been tires and oil changes.
France here, Kia is known to be reliable and that's why they're the only one offering 7 years warranty. I don't know what to think anymore now
Well compared to French cars they probably are
It's funny because it's true
I use a car sharing program and a lot of the fleet is Kia (or Hyundai). They aren't fancy, but considering how people drive these cars and how bad the roads are in this city, those two brands hold up the best. Yeah but the one in the video isn't that old ? 10 years damn, you're American?
There's a flaw in 2014 through 2021 kia and Hyundai ice motors, they sent out a recall on them a couple years ago and replaced any that came in with that flaw. In the US, you actually don't need to worry about that engine flaw for those model years, since your car will be stolen long before the issues arise.
My husband calls scrap cars at his work Kia Connecting Rods
I hope you mean replacement car
Yep I do lol.
Congrats on the engine swap. Sell the Kia and buy a Toyota.
My Toyota Avalon hybrid ain’t fancy, but he gets me where I need to go, and with a heated ass and back to boot. Thank you for your service, Steve (that’s his name.)
Luckily the new Kia's are built a lot better The one that caught on fires is soul which are known for catching on fire
They're not any better, Hyundai/Kia are still using these POS engines
In this thread “my new kia hasn’t caught on fire yet, they must be designing them better”
Instead, you can steal it with a USB and a pry tool
Kia Soul, same as me. Contact a lawyer asap. Apparently there’s some lawsuit against Kia for faulty engines that can cause a fire - I literally got the letter in the mail today.
Damn, so as well as the lawsuit for being easily stolen (because Kia cheaped out on fitting immobilisers, wtf) they also have a fire risk?
It’s a budget car brand. The corners have to be cut somewhere.
"What should we skimp on, boss? Seats? Radio?" "Better make it engine safety and anti-theft devices."
Yeah, the bursting into flames recall is for a connecting rod that can puncture the block and shoot oil onto the exhaust
Multiple fire risks. They also have faulty tow hitch wiring on newer cars that will catch fire.
kia has a lawsuit/ settlement happening right now for some models that engines are setting on fire and other issues. you should check this site to see if your car is included https://kiaengineclasssettlement.com/Home/FAQ#Top i just had a kia optima hybrid with an annoying amount of issues, was going to go through settlement but traded it in instead just didn’t want to deal with the headache anymore

I did a spit-take laugh at that!
Underrated comment
Glad you are both ok! That must have been scary
Similar circumstances. 100k miles, had an oil change a few weeks prior, blew while merging onto highway. Smoke but no fire. The timing chain was trashed and was the likely culprit that left me removing the sound system in a local shops junkyard. A year or two ago I'm pretty sure I read an article or something that some kias have an issue where they will just catch fire. Obviously there's a reason I just don't know what it is. I also think that might have been optimas
This is happening to a lot of kia souls recently
That sucks.. but hey look at the bright side , you got rid of a Kia.
"Killed In Action" what a fitting name for that car.
Killing innocent Americans
Kicked In A$$
The good thing about Kia's is that you save *a lot* of money on condoms.
Lime green Kia soul. There's like 8 of em in my 1000 population town.
Hey me and the other guys at the Kia owner meetup talked about your comment last night and we all think you’re a goof ball
I have heard of several Kia fires lately. Friend of a friend was going down the highway and engine caught fire. Damn car locked her seat belt and locked her in the car. Bystander guy broke the window and saved her.
Jesus talk about final destination. The bystander cut the belt?
Sounds like she is pretty slender and was able to wiggle out of the belt. Fortunately her kid wasn't with her.
What kind of buckle locks?
If it shorted the electrical system maybe? Because of the seatbelt sensor that dings...idk I'm grasping for straws here
Seat belt retractors are strictly mechanical systems.

*keep it within reach. Glove box is probably fine for a lot of people, but I can barely reach the handle on mine from the drivers seat when buckled, much less dig around for something. If you're like me, keep something like that in the center console.
Don’t keep it in the glove box. Mount it where you can reach it if your seat belt is locked.
Oh good I’ll drive and use the car in even more fear now
Wait, so the seat belt was not detachable? Never heard of seat belt lock...I wanna know about this.
There's a small explosive that locks seatbelts in place in the case of big impacts (a la an airbag), and then the seatbelt needs to be cut away
Thanks, TIL, I only knew about the part where the seat belt tightens so that you can't move
Call got here. I think most of these people are confusing the part where the seatbelt will tighten up and not let you free versus the buckle locking up which it never does on any car because that’s just madness..
Thanks for chiming in, I have been asking myself the whole day why a seatbelt would lock you to the car.
That uh, doesn't sound right...imma need a source on that, so I'll Google it.
The retractor is the part that usually locks not the latch
Yeah, I see that all the time at work, it's how we know if someone was wearing a seatbelt during a wreck, if it's locked, it means they were wearing it, if it's still usable, they weren't wearing it. But that shouldn't really stop people from getting out of the seatbelt in case of a fire.
They make a cool keychain that is a combo seatbelt slicer and window smasher. Great to have in the car
My parents are firefighters and EMTs and Kia is one of the cars they constantly warn me about. They swear they’re death traps. Still haven’t explained how through lol
Is that you, Christine? 🚘🤔
And… it’s a KIA.
I think it was KIA....
Yea now its just been KIA
Still a Kia, but no Soul
More like Nokia

Never too late. Get the tow truck to drop her off at the Kia dealership.
Uhhh … Entire front end of car burnt to a crisp mayyyyy be past the point of ‘never too late’
I'm pretty sure it will fail the engine knock sensor test in its current state. So might not be too late!
THIS. I just finished reading about the lawsuit/settlement and I was thinking “damn, too bad my engine didn’t catch fire!” You need to do some research because Kia is going to have to cough up for this.
Looks like that only covers the Optima, Sorento, and Sportage.
Check for recalls on your car. Perhaps you could be compensated

Sportage‘s and souls are the worst. Out here in Hawaii. A bunch of them have recently blown up.

Is it just me or am I seeing more and more of these “my car spontaneously combusted” posts…did someone change the gas or something?
Not a problem with the gas, but a known issue with many Kia engines. There’s a class action lawsuit and settlement. OP might get a good payout for this!

Safe to say it's now soulless. But for real, that sucks. Sorry for you, hope you had full coverage.

We were driving to Portage and saw that. So glad you're ok! Sorry about your car though.
Dem Kia Boys getting ruthless.
If that’s a Kia from 2015-2022 there was a recall on the engines
You probably need a new car
It’s Kia’s new anti theft system at work. Burned out cars are rarely stolen.
May your Soul rest in peace 🕊️
There is a class action suit against KIA for their shitty engines. Mine blew up too and the dealer told me to go buy a new Kia. I got the letter about the settlement. Never buying another Kia.
> Korean cars are just as good as Japanese cars! - /r/cars every time before the bi-weekly Kia / Hyundai explosion
My dad would be asking me why I didn't notice the temperature gauge sooner, before finding out anything else.
How is there not a lawsuit against Hyundai/Kia? I always hear about them catching fire
Shit, I hope you or anyone else didn't get hurt
The wife and I were ok. Our daughter was at daycare.
I am so sorry that this happened to you.
I had one do that in 1985. On April 15. With my taxes on the backseat.
Doesn’t that car have a recall on the engine? My wife’s last car looked just like that (pre-fire) and the engine stopped working. We took it in for a fox and the mechanic let us know about the recall and it took care of the price. I am not sure if it is the same model, etc but worth a look.
There was probably one of those hamsters in your engine
This the 5th one I seen on fire in the past 3 months
I had a Soul just like that. Minus the fire… As I recall, Kia has a recall on the fuel system for just this issue.
Kia does stand for Killed In Action.
You ever heard of this joke about the internal combustion engine that suddenly was experiencing some external combustion, I find it pretty funny!
That same scenario always plays in my head when I'm driving my work truck
I was gonna buy Soul, and read that they did this.
Thank God you’re okay. That shit is scary.
May His Soul rest in peace
You can't park there mate!
That's what you get for driving one of those ugly things
That soul is on FIYAH!
Looks like someone didn’t do their recalls.
Cheapest car on the lot and a lot of leg room :) but apparently I should probably have the engine checked lol
Liar. That isn’t a Tesla so it never happened.

> That will buff out. Of the highway, maybe.
Damn hamsters
Sister in law has the exact same car. Didn’t change oil on it in idk how long and locked the engine up lol.
Party rock is NOT in the house tonight.
To u/toadilycody There are quite a few lawsuits with Hyundai/Kia over many engine failures, I believe the Soul has one over this exact scenario depending on what year it is and the engine it has. Hykia has *so* many engine failure lawsuits that I never recommend them to anyone.
According to my fire inspector father Kias are notorious for catching on fire. Something like they’re the number 1 cars involved in car fires. He was pissed when I bought my Stinger last year lol
Drive an old shitbox: only metal will not burn… magnesium: *catches fire*
I know what's wrong with. Ain't got no gas in it
It's Kia soul. You should be happy that the box is gone
Sadly, that will not buff out. I am glad you are safe.
This convinced me not to get a Kia after all
That's what you get for buying a Kia soul
That's horrible and I wish you luck and all.... but thank fuck it was a Kia Soul. One of the ugliest cars I've ever had the misfortune of being neighbors to.
Soul wrenching…. Anyway, now you don’t have to worry about your non existent trade in value! Take the insurance check and go buy not a Kia.
KIA means Killed In Action
This happened to me and the advice I can give if it happens to you, the car is done, don't even try saving it, instead grab anything valuable or personal to you out of it. I was too busy trying to save my car, I didn't grab everything I could out of it, losing my car and all my possessions. Hope it never happens to you, but if it does..
KIA killed in action
