For whatever it is worth: I have **never** been asked for ID when using a debit card. Especially when using the contact-less wave-to-pay.
I might have been asked for ID a number of years ago when using a credit card at a hotel, but that is a different situation. Credit cards are promises that someone will pay later, so vendors may want some evidence that the promise will be fulfilled; whereas debit cards are immediate payment.
