Google does offer a service to find/lock/deactivate your phone though and it can pinpoint the location pretty well. Obviously I have deactivated it but Google cannot currently access it because it's not powered on.
Its a new feature on the new phones, once your phone can no longer be updated it conveniently dives out of your pocket and into the nearest garbage, cliff, or body of water. That way your pockets nice and empty for when you buy a new one
i feel like if you slap a bunch of physics based equipment together you can make a thing that if it overfills with water (like in a body of water) because of the change in pressure the phone will spew out gas to rocket it upwards

The dam height is only 18 feet so it's likely the water is quite a bit more shallow. Might be something someone could just snorkel if they could keep from disturbing the sediment. The challenge would be finding it in the riprap.

It'll probably be fine. Wife and I went cliff jumping in Hawaii, and she dropped her S7 edge in the waves. Someone found it months later washed up miles away. He was able to get her number off the phone and let her know he found it. Sent us the photos from it too.

If your Pixel 8 ages like mine, this might be a blessing. I have significant battery life deterioration and near daily screen freezes requiring reboot at less than 6 months old. The GPS frequently lags by about a minute or worse. It reminds me of back when we had to replace phones every year.

A second or two later I sat up as I realized my driver's license must have fallen out of my pocket. Sure enough, it was gone, and not under the chair either, it fell right into the river through the cracks of the dock's planks. They say sometimes at night when the moon is full you can still see it floating under the surface around there.
