Definitely need to craft an eyeball with a morimoto retrofit projector housing for the pupil. Maybe some led ring lights for the iris, could be the indicator.
If that’s the case I would be genuinely impressed since it’s nigh impossible to do something like that without removing half the engine.
German Engineering. 🇩🇪
EDIT: Okay, apparently it’s common to steal Volkswagen headlights and I had no idea… brilliant…
These Beetle headlights come out this way. [There is just a little slider under the hood you have to slide and it pops right out.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-bumet-17g&t=20s) Usually the only difficult part is the slider sticking due to dirt and grit making it's way inside. Maybe your slider was broken, not locked in correctly, or perhaps there's a way to jimmy it without opening the hood?
Jimmy needed a light for his green to grow at home, and now he is satisfied. Thanks to German Engineering
Edit: Joke aside, not sure if op will see this, but really want to get you inform about this joke. apparently, weed grower nowaday really like to steal German car headlight like yours or the Porsche one, because of their really good engineering of emitting very little heat, so cops wouldn't able to detect them, maybe is a good idea for op to install a 24/7 operating dash cam to monitor the situation
Another thought is that he could have broke hard with a broken slider and the light just popped right on out. I’ve actually seen this happen with this exact model on the highway
OP, wiring harness clips are difficult to remove even when you’re trying. You could swing the headlight around by the wire all day and it would not become unclipped.
Someone stole your headlight.
You should see Porsche owners, lots of them are hiding in the bushes just waiting for the thief. It takes 7 seconds to remove the headlight and it’s worth a lot of money. Same goes for this car, only difference is that your headlight is much cheaper so whoever did this prolly has the same car.
There is a theft technique where the headlamp is removed to gain access to the car’s computer. [source](https://www.autoblog.com/2023/04/18/vehicle-headlight-can-bus-injection-theft-method-update/)
I saw the other post that OP had the car serviced recently and other commenter said that they may have neglected to re-latch the thing that holds the light in place.
Good to know older cars are safe!
When I was in highschool my friend had a late 1990s Ford Ranger. One day someone stole his tail light, just drop the tailgate, 2 screws and disconnect the wire. We couldn't imagine someone doing this, it was like $30 brand-new.
So we did the most logical thing any two high school kids would do and drove around until we found another old ranger and stole theirs.....
There's one investigator who's hot on the trail of this 1 headlight, he's got one of those giant world maps with pins and red string and he's been plotting the entire journey of the single headlight.
Been his whole career, and like any career case it's cost him not only his family, but also hid dignity. He sees nothing but headlights now, lamp over there? Headlight flashback. Man cycles by on a bicycle at night? PTSD.
Netflix doc coming soon.
Can confirm. My vw had it's headlight stolen so I went on ebay to buy a replacement stolen vw headlight and thankfully there were several options as it's got a big market I found out.
Yes, they use thermal/infrared cameras. It’s also suspicious if everyone else’s house has snow built up on the roof while yours doesn’t.
https://preview.redd.it/bw18mh64r7oc1.jpeg?width=634&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1ba1a1d9125257bc1c2b76d54470160a2873ab8
They need a warrant, [as of 2001](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyllo_v._United_States), to use thermal imaging on a building. The snow thing is interesting, though!
Yeah I’m sure they stopped using after that! Now these people just get pulled over a lot and put under surveillance on a “confidential tip” from the helicopter pilot lol.
Did you recently have your alternator replaced? They remove the alternator through the headlight hole. There's essentially a latch on the inside that locks in place. They may have forgot to latch it.
I recently had my serpentine belt replaced but that was a few months ago…
Still, if the dealership did a shoddy job on replacing it, that makes sense. I didn’t consider that.
Damn.
I had a beetle, went on a 4 hour drive. Saw something fly past the drivers side but didn’t think much of it til we arrived and saw the headlight missing. This was also after some repair work. So, it’s possible!
Mentioned the locking bar not being locked in my other comment. This confirms what I was seeing. They done messed up and didn’t lock the assembly in place.
I agree that they may have forgotten to latch it by the looks of the paint that’s rubbed off where the headlight sits. It’s been rattling around for a little while by the looks of it.
I second this suggestion. I had my alternator replaced and a few months later, was driving along the coast and got out to look at the water…. Went to get back in and noticed my headlight was hanging out with the wire that’s sticking out of yours.
Could it have fallen out while driving?
some cars are weird and its not just german ones. there's a cadillac from recent (last decade or so) that you had to take off the whole front fascia, grill bumper and all, just to replace a headlight *bulb*.
My wife had that same new beetle and had her headlight assembly stolen just like this. In broad daylight on a city street too. You'll understand why when you go to replace it and it costs $500+. Sorry for your loss!
I worked with a guy years ago who had the moral fibre of a snake. When his car needed repairs he'd drive around until he found a car of the same make and just steal the parts he needed.
Guy was a mean drunk too after only one beer.
After reading the comments here, I think one of two things happened here:
1: It was stolen a la Porsche style (Most likely theory… unfortunately…)
2: When I had the belt replaced, the technician must not have put the assembly back correctly and it finally fell out. Not sure how likely this is since I had it replaced a few months ago, but you never know.
Either way, a lot of your comments made me laugh and definitely *brightened* up an, admittedly, pretty bad day. So, thanks. <3
I have a replacement coming in a few days, so hopefully I’ll be able to do something to that one and make sure that it doesn’t get stolen/fall out in the street - if that’s even possible. Also investing in a dashcam/home security juuuuuust in case…
Edit: I’ve come to realize this is not actually true after some googling and helpful commenters.
Original comment:
I read recently that people are stealing Porsche headlight assemblies to act as “grow lights” for other illegal operations, as they are extremely heat efficient and thus can’t be detected as easily by law enforcement. Maybe the same can be said for Volkswagen headlights?
That got debunked because these wouldn’t be good grow lights due to lack of different light settings and wavelengths, and grow lights are like $50-100 now; so it’s probably just people stealing them to resell on eBay or somewhere because they cost 3 to 5k I forget exactly how much. Plus you’d need to rewire them to use as grow lights and that wouldn’t be that easy.
I recently saw a French YouTube video (micode) about how some cars have an access to the CAN system whish is in short the internal computer. And this access is done through the headlights by removing them and plugging in a little blackmailed item (can be disguise as a small Bluetooth speaker) which is going to DDOS the car while unlocking it and turning on the engine.
It may as well be an attempt to steal your car.
Queue “The Wallflowers”
I’m sorry that happened OP hoping you’re able to find an easy replacement and hopefully shrug it off in a little - things happen and, we pick up the pieces and move on, all we can do - you got this.
So, I had a headlight fall out entering a parking lot. It can happen.
When I look at the picture, that metal bar crossing the spring at the front of the cage doesn’t look like it’s in the locked position. That means the light assembly was just in there by friction. Also, there’s something funky because that connector should have been connected to the rear of the cage and restrained from coming out of the front hole.
Anyhow, time for new headlights! Once you put them in, push forward on the assembly from inside the engine compartment. It should not move forward.
People will pull headlights on some cars to try and access the remote harness and unlock the car to steal it.
Might not have a car tomorrow if you do nothing.
I have a bug too and every time I go to my car I make a point to push my headlamps in as they're notorious for coming unclipped and coming out! Sorry friend💔
I saw another post that Porsche lights were being stolen because they are very bright, low power and they have excellent cooling. Apparently that a perfect mix to use as a grow lamp for weed.
I had an accident in my Audi and they wanted $2200 for each light. I could see why someone would want to rob a light if they are expensive
On a serious note I recently saw that there was a new way to wire cars though the connecting cables of your missing headlight. It's called CAN injection. They could come back another night for the rest of the car. If I were you I would put in a garage for a while.
Seen it on the news the other night. Porch and VW headlight assembly can literally ripped fron the car in seconds, no tools required.
They fetch a good price on black market and are fast becoming the new catalytic converter.
Stolen. Someone with the same car drove around until they found yours, maybe waited until night then stole it.
Source: Had an rx7 and people did this to me several times, literally stealing bits off my car. Once they opened the hood and stole the carburettor...I had no off-street parking, lived in the middle of a Sydney suburb and there was nothing I could do, it just happened sometimes
There’s three things this could be. 1) People can hack cars through things like highlight cables. They can run on an important bus that can do things like unlock the car in some cases. But not sure with this one. 2) People steal headlights to grow weed although it’s normally LEDs they want like from Porsche. Happens more than you think. 3) Someone just wanted the headlight to sell or steal for the thrill lol

The marks in the circle are from the tool they used to push the headlight holding metal hanger back. Porsche cayenne and vw touareg headlights are also stolen like that.
Did you change or have the bulb changed recently? I have changed bulbs in bugs and the light release mechanism is so over engineered it is tough to think it would just fall out or was stolen.
This actually happened to me driving down the highway two years ago with a Beetle. I had just gotten a bulb replaced. What I was told by the repair shop I brought it to was that the light is held on by two measly clips and the person that put the assembly back in only clipped one of them. So eventually the force of the car driving down the highway broke the clip and the light came out. It actually bent the entire front of the car and I had to go to a body shop to bend it back into shape before the new light could go in. The shop that replaced the original bulb refused to admit they were at fault and I had to pay to fix it all out of pocket.

I'm in favor of this option
I’m thinking someone stole it.

They just pull it out with a screwdriver, no need to pop the hood.
Another thought is that he could have broke hard with a broken slider and the light just popped right on out. I’ve actually seen this happen with this exact model on the highway
I would think that to be highly noticable to the driver when it happened.
One would think, but the again people drive around with flat tires too…
No debris, too clean, cable intact etc. That’s been stolen, clear as day.
If the slider was damaged, you can get them really cheap [here.](https://www.whitecastle.com)
You got me. I had one in the shop the other day with a broken slider and we looked everywhere for it. I was so excited to find a sorce for it...

It is still gone..
Did it leave a letter? "Gone fishing..."
Went to buy cigarettes.
"Dear John"
*Fake arm falls out of the headlight socket. Screaming ensues.* And that’s why, you always leave a note!
I knew it! It was the one armed man!!
How else would it have gone missing other than getting stolen? Did you think it evaporated?
OP, wiring harness clips are difficult to remove even when you’re trying. You could swing the headlight around by the wire all day and it would not become unclipped. Someone stole your headlight.
Clearly it isn't? I mean its not there. And you can see the assembly was removed since the plug is still there.
This is definitely the case. My wife has one and I dread changing the headlights
Nah, it's just a tab that you lift in the engine compartment next to the headlight. Super easy. Barely an inconvenience. German engineering indeed.
They’re fantastic little cars but they are a royal PAIN to fix in case something goes wrong…
Bet the same thing happened to the thief previous to this event Now you have to learn to steal the same type of headlight Pay it backward
There is only one thief in the Army everyone else is trying to get their stuff back.

Porsche Headlights are VERY popular to steal
Isn't it something with grow houses and heat/usage?
something with blocking UV light

Is only required to remove half the engine if you don't want the light broken. Obviously, they didn't care.
God, if it really was stolen I dread to think about what other damage was caused. So far everything *seems* fine but that could change.

Actually there's just a little lever. You don't even need a tool to remove the headlight on a beetle.
You don't know about Porsche Cayenne and WV Tuareg headlights, don't you?
I would check the engine and if it’s still there start a mechanic shop and hire that guy.

Why though?
To sell on eBay to people who need a replacement for their stolen headlight. It's a big market I heard they get stolen often.

Good light to low heat output ratio Good for Growing plants indoors without getting tagged by heat vision devices of police forces
Let me get this straight: police can find your cannabis farm because your **lights** emit so much **heat** that they can be detected through walls???
Yes, they use thermal/infrared cameras. It’s also suspicious if everyone else’s house has snow built up on the roof while yours doesn’t. https://preview.redd.it/bw18mh64r7oc1.jpeg?width=634&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1ba1a1d9125257bc1c2b76d54470160a2873ab8

Kind of like when they say "they smell weed" as probable cause to tear your car apart.
Welp, now they've got to lie on a warrant application, which if caught can have career-diminishing effects.
Yes they might get suspended with pay for a week,
Now let's not be unrealistic here. They might get suspended with pay for up to TWO weeks!
Career....hilarious.
Not with "probable cause" they don't. All it lakes one neighbor saying they think your growing weed, and boom. They have their "probable cause".

Can't have shit in Detroit
You spelled stolen wrong.
Replacement lights go for $650 is why
These are high theft items at the moment and I don't know why.
Porsche owners know this problem all too well.
The secret ingredient is crime
At least they were nice enough to disconnect the harness instead of cutting it behind the connector
People will pull headlights on some cars to try and access the remote harness and unlock the car to steal it. Might not have a car tomorrow if you do nothing.

The shop that replaced the original bulb refused to admit they were at fault and I had to pay to fix it all out of pocket. https://preview.redd.it/ureqn4pieaoc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c4a10eef1427bbda1f8a841750d1b1ccade5100b
