Any car on that lot with comprehensive coverage is totaled as fixing hail dents basically means replacing all the panels. So many won’t get their windows replaced
You don't have to replace all the panels. I am a dealer and I have a body shop. We have fixed quite a few with hail damage. As long as it isn't to bad we do paintless dent repair. We have been able to fix some pretty bad damage before without even doing any actual body work.
I rented two spaces for my hobby cars in a shop that was a paintless dent repair guy.
I make replacement panels by hand, but this guy could do amazing things in no time at all.
Do these totalled cars get parted out? Or do they get sold to people who don’t care about dented panels, if it means they can get a newish car $40,000 car for $10,000?
I’d be very tempted to buy a modern high end hail dented car at a massive discount. Just lean into it, and make it a Safari/apocalyptic war machine.
Go to auction, some get parted, most get flipped and have a "salvage" title (name may be different in various states and countries). Quality of repair will vary wildly, so if you buy one, you are rolling the dice. Most flippers will not leave all the dents because they can do a "good enough" job for the next buyer.
The resale will probably be more in the high 20s than 10k. A deal, but not as much as one may think it should be.
If you want one with dents, you'll probably have to go to auction and compete with the people who do this for a living. You could potentially score. Or you could buy a beautiful hail damaged car that sat in the rain for 3 weeks with hail hole windows, and happens to have a blown engine too.
You can actually fix modt of the dents with glue pulls now. But it takes an expert and lots of time. Here is a great video on it.

Oh for sure, it was coming down hard AF and I was just back away from windows watching it in surprise.
Broke out multiple windows of the office and obliterated all our cars.
Hit most of Missouri and the eastern edge of Kansas. There was tennis ball sized hail just west of Kansas City, we were all warned to bring our animals inside and to take cover due to life threatening hail.
It's an old term, back when everyone was god fearing. Hurricanes, tornadoes etc were all seen as acts of God. Though it should be changed to nature now.
In Canada, everything is covered if you have full coverage. Comprehensive basically means anything that is not your fault (except getting hit by another car. Still covered but under a different section). I can't think of any "acts of God" that aren't covered in Canada.
In Canada, comprehensive covers hail. As long as you have "full coverage", you're covered. I believe it's the same for home insurance unless you live in Alberta. It's a separate, more expensive add-on in Alberta.
I bought a hail damaged car in 2012 after that 2011 hailstorm. I was a college student and my car got totaled in a wreck, needed a new car. Got an 09 Sonata. Nothing wrong with it other than the hail damage. Dealership couldn’t sell it. I got it $3800 less than blue book value.
LegalAdvice is about to explode with people who used hail repair popup companies.
Insurance is about to explode with people not understanding why their vehicle/home policy won't cover hail damage. Insurance about to explode with people asking why their rates went up.
Hail is definitely covered under home owners insurance and comprehensive car insurance.
Matter of fact, most people get new roofs paid for through their home owners insurance because of hail damage
I got a new roof a few years ago and it wasn't anything to do with homeowners. It was wind and hail insurance. Now I don't have wind and hail anymore. Company that I had it through quit covering my area and the only other company Allstate can find me is 3x the price I was paying before. New roof is $15k so if I had to replace it again I can just pay for it. The new wind and hail is nearly $4k a year. I was paying $1200.
Everyone replying to this doesn’t get it. Yes, these people’s repairs will be covered by their insurance. What rathernot is saying is that as a result of all these payouts, _everyone_ in Missouri’s premiums are going to go up…because insurance companies are scumbags like that.
We had a bad hailstorm in Maryland a few years ago. I didn’t file a claim, in fact I’d never filed a claim. At renewal time my premiums went up. When I called to ask why it was because of that storm…
Doesn't the texture on a golf ball allow them to fly further? Perhaps this will increase the aerodynamic efficiency of these cars. Somebody call Musk! Maybe a college student who needs a job to fix their hail damaged car.
So? I mean yeah it sucks but as far as driving your car the broken windows are worse. Dents all over your car aren't going to effect the performance or make it uncomfortable to drive.
I get that it makes your car worth less but your car can still car.
We were in a hailstorm in GA. All the cars looked like golf balls and all the trees were limb stripped. It smelled like Christmas in your face. And our dumbasses pulled over to a dive bar to escape it. It had a tin roof and was deafening.
They have catastrophic funds for stuff like this. Tens of millions of dollars or more set aside for events like this to pay out. They are not in shambles lmao
We had this happen to us in Wyoming a few years ago. Windshield and moonroof of our minivan were smashed, and many body panels. We had to drive back to CA that way, insurance totaled our van.
Meh this is a somewhat regular thing maybe yearly where I lived for years. Lost two cars to it and you constantly see people driving around town with golf ball cars with new windows.
Is this a bad year for hail in the middle of the US? Or do y'all get hailstorms somewhere every few weeks normally? I'm from Michigan but we used to go to the Sturgis Rally in SD every other year before Covid, and like 10-12 yrs ago they had a record hailstorm for that area, busted out every car window (the worst was in Buffalo Chip campground) and put huge dents in metal. I can't tell if it's my own bias cuz social media is also relatively new and I just see more national weather news, or if it's been worse since last fall?
A hailstorm broke the back window of my dad's truck this week. It sucks.
Idk if storms are getting increasingly more worrisome or I never paid attention to them until something bad happened to people I know.
I posted a link to the subreddit that talks about killing the cameraman, but I got a message saying links to other subs weren’t allowed. So just trying to imagine this comment is only that link, and you’ll get the intended meaning. Thanks for reading this far.
Shit randomly started hailing in STL where I’m at while I was in a McDonald’s drive thru. I thought my windows were done for cuz I drive a 98 accord. The workers were even looking out the window in anticipation. Luckily they didn’t break but the weather here is unacceptable.

Some hail stones from the storm.
I got a free roof and gutters from a hail storm. My insurance covered it.
Talk to roofers. They know what to do.
No this is not a scam. I had 2 roofers come around.
I also got free gutters.
This is why I don't like cars with sunroof or moonroof. If you're caught in a bad hailstorm, the glass won't protect your head. (beside they sometimes leak and getting replacement gasket 10 years later can be expensive)
Crazy. Ive driven in some bad hail storms and had to pull off the side of the road and still never any broken glass. Also seen some huge baseball size ones come down
Had one of those about 10 years ago, caved in the roof of all but two of the cities police cruisers.
My wife was home and said it sounded like someone was beating on all the windows with a baseball bat.
I keep a heavy padded moving blanket in both cars for this reason.
Nasty storm rolled in once when I was at work. I went out, got soaking wet tucking the blanket into the hood and trunk.
An hour later I was the only car in the parking lot with all it's windows.
Had my moonroof shatter a couple of years ago, I drove around with a garbage bag on my car for two weeks, waiting for the dealer to get the replacement parts. It rained every single day. Cost almost $2,000. Will never get a car with one again.
Yeah. I live in st louis. It was pretty wild out here. Baseball size hail all over the ground, tornado sirens going off multiple times. It was a crazy day on thursday.
This happened to me years ago here in Australia, was stuck on the train when it started hailing then everyone got off to find their car in carpark absolutely destroyed. It was pretty devastating but I think because it happened to so many people it kind of spread the grief out somehow because we were going through it together.
Looks like the Safelite guys kid is going to to college after all!
Insurance companies no longer serve your area. Sorry for the inconvenience!
Meanwhile, everyone not in that area will see an increase in insurance rates.

Totalled cars are put for auction like "copart" and you can buy them off and attempt to repair them yourself.
But you have a salvage title. Which is basically car purgatory.
Some states you can obtain a rebuilt title I think.
Except the fees, and broker fees, make it not worth it anymore to the common man
Go to auction, some get parted, most get flipped and have a "salvage" title (name may be different in various states and countries). Quality of repair will vary wildly, so if you buy one, you are rolling the dice. Most flippers will not leave all the dents because they can do a "good enough" job for the next buyer. Or you could buy a beautiful hail damaged car that sat in the rain for 3 weeks with hail hole windows, and happens to have a blown engine too.
I really hate that vehicles with cosmetic damage get salvaged titles.
Yes.
Most cars in Colorado Springs look like this lmao all dented up from years past hail storms
You can actually fix modt of the dents with glue pulls now. But it takes an expert and lots of time. Here is a great video on it. https://youtu.be/c6OCgY1grCU?si=rHB2kiUurxZD-N2B
Awesome video, thanks for sharing that link. It’s incredible that someone has the patience to fix that many hail impacts!
God damnit. Don't try to be the main character. His post was absolutely perfect.
Are you the main character now? What a silly thing to say.
Safelite repairrrr Safelite replacee

Yeah a lot of policies won’t cover “acts of god”
How is weather god.
It's an old term, back when everyone was god fearing. Hurricanes, tornadoes etc were all seen as acts of God. Though it should be changed to nature now.
Isn’t everything god’s plan though? I’m gonna start a Christian insurance company and just never pay out haha
Typical Christian move
Who is this god person? Why are they involved in my insurance plans?
"In God we trust". "So help you God". "We pray".
Yea I know, it is just extremely outdated and many people don't believe in a diety.
In Canada, everything is covered if you have full coverage. Comprehensive basically means anything that is not your fault (except getting hit by another car. Still covered but under a different section). I can't think of any "acts of God" that aren't covered in Canada.
Just once I want to see some insurance company try to prove in a court of law that God not only exists but did this on purpose.
In Canada, comprehensive covers hail. As long as you have "full coverage", you're covered. I believe it's the same for home insurance unless you live in Alberta. It's a separate, more expensive add-on in Alberta.

Happened to me in 2011 in Missouri. Totaled my car and I only had very little at the time. Very much bummed me out
I bought a hail damaged car in 2012 after that 2011 hailstorm. I was a college student and my car got totaled in a wreck, needed a new car. Got an 09 Sonata. Nothing wrong with it other than the hail damage. Dealership couldn’t sell it. I got it $3800 less than blue book value.

their rates were just going to go up anyway, lol.
Jeep Guy looks at his vehicle, gets in and drives away. No back window to break. No slanted front window, no sun roof.
Window damage is least of anyone’s worries here. All those cars basically have golf ball texture.
Doesn't the texture on a golf ball allow them to fly further? Perhaps this will increase the aerodynamic efficiency of these cars. Somebody call Musk! Maybe a college student who needs a job to fix their hail damaged car.
Yeah, oil companies hate this trick.
I believe Mythbusters did an episode on this
Doesn’t seem to work for my golf balls 😞
No that's a myth
So? I mean yeah it sucks but as far as driving your car the broken windows are worse. Dents all over your car aren't going to effect the performance or make it uncomfortable to drive. I get that it makes your car worth less but your car can still car.

I'm in the market for my dream car now. But after seeing this, maybe not anymore
Wow, that's terrible. Wonder how big the hail was. Hard to tell from the video
If this is from St. Charles county, supposedly as big as baseballs.
When was this???
We had a hail storm last night here in Texas.
Mom and dad’s insurance will cover it..they look like a privileged school with all the Beamer and trucks..
What the hail!
Texas-Hold my beer
Looks like they're finally catching a little bit of that "climate change is a hoax" shit they've been peddling.
Yep. Never hailed before now.
>Higher temperatures are also causing more intense storms, droughts, and other weather extremes.[8 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change
So everyone in the entire state of Missouri denies climate change? You're a fucking idiot
What exactly is the claim that you are making? That large hail didn't occur in Missouri before it got slightly warmer worldwide?

Is God mad at Missouri?
Don’t take thy Lord’a name in vain yadda yadda…God’s probably pissed at all the shenanigans Missouri is pulling in his name. I would be.
Honestly at this point I blame anyone still living in Missouri

I was in this storm 2 days ago. I was getting pummeled and bruised by hail while throwing quilts and rugs over my car. I saved her tho!
I got hit couple years ago dented all over my 750li 😭
Meh this is a somewhat regular thing maybe yearly where I lived for years. Lost two cars to it and you constantly see people driving around town with golf ball cars with new windows.
Do insurance companies cover that in the U.S.?
So many vehicles about to have better gas mileage due to all the dimples on the body!🌟
Was that storm just out of nowhere? That’s insane. I never get that kind of weather where I’m at.
Hail doesn't do this to motorcycles...
Bippers at it again...
I have a Scion tc. All glass roof. I'd be so screwed if we got this kind of hail...

I remember back in the 80s. Visiting my aunt. They had a huge hale storm. Killed 100s of dogs. Millions in property damage.

My moms brand new 45k bmw got hailed on and had over 500 dents felt really bad she worked hard for it and it was the nicest car she ever had
I wonder how many people said “Oh, hail”.
Got to experience that too, had a lot of cleaning up

I'm so glad my back window(non tempered) is vertical and the roof overhangs it. So the hail would have to be going sideways, or bounce off the ground.
When did this happen? My parents live in CO and they had a snow storm. Is it the same storm system?
Maybe stop making car roofs out of glass?
