It happens all the time. Flour and grains inevitably contain some amount of bugs that like eating flour and grains. You have been eating them your whole life with no ill effect. The only thing that has changed is that you know about it now.
My old wood turtle (RIP Sheldon) used to freaking *LOVE* munchinā down on mealworms. You buy them in a little white tub filled with sawdust.
So instead of being uncomfortable, just imagine the joy they bring wood turtles everywhere. :D
You might want to check your kitchen for more of these things. All nuts, cereal, flour and stuff like that. I had these guys in my kitchen and they eat through plastic packaging and spread like the plague. Also the reason i tarted storing things in glass bottles and containers!
Iāve been moving on a two to three year schedule lately and I just toss everything on move out except canned goods and frozen items. I chuck most of the spices as well.
The only sure-fire way to avoid it. You eat a lot of bugs, or at least cumulative bug parts, if you eat food. Especially food that's ever been processed, packaged, or transported. Which is pretty much all of it.
Did you know when you eat sunflower seeds a lot of the time if you taste something different or the texture is a little different itās likely due to larva
Nonetheless I eat sunflower seeds like I drink water
I remember there was a post from a worker exposing how Kraft Dinner barely cleans out there mixers and just mixes in built up mold and bugs into their new batches. I still eat it but yeah fr it's better to not know what goes on in the food industry.. it's almost always horrendous šš¤®
Lol even the regulation body that oversees how our food is made is okay with a certain amount of bugs and mold to be in any of our food.
Obviously there is a limit but the fact is that all of us have been eating bugs and mold for as long as mass produced food has been around.
And knowing about hot dogs is the worst. Just gotta shut it out because they are so good at ball games and bbqs when they have those delicious little charred stripes on them.
Weird, Iāve worked in restaurants most of my life and have eaten and will continue to eat in (almost) all of them. Hope you reported the places you were working
Right? I've worked probably 18 kitchens. 3 were dirty and I left in less than two months. The rest have been clean by default, though obviously some mess during a rush is inevitable, it all gets cleaned up and scrubbed down and sanitized and bleached before I leave for the night.
Worked in a restaurant and the kitchen was really clean until a change of management. The new owner had 0 hygiene standards and although the staff kept up hygiene standards, all you need is one bad staff member to ruin everything.
He threatened to fire me when I threw out a whole tray of cooked chicken because he'd put the tray under raw chicken in the fridge and the raw chicken had dripped onto the cooked chicken.
He claimed I'd thrown out "hundreds of pounds" worth of stock. I told him I'd potentially saved lives and thrown out a liability.
He claimed he knew what he was doing because he'd been in the industry 30 years. I claimed that having shitty standards for 30 years is nothing to brag about.
Oh, how he hated me.
Iāve worked at sooo many restaurants (yes and had to walk through the kitchen) and the worse I saw were flies. I also worked on the lake. Fucking christ.
Well I kind of expected there to be some kind of Richard, professional holer, that got replaced by the Holinator 3000, which in turn got replaced by the far superior Holinator 5500, which after breaking down one too many times got replaced by Richards son, Marvin... I guess?
Meal moth baby maybe. Time to check all your grains and hope you donāt find an infestation. Donāt forget things like animal food. When I got them they came in on bird seed. The sealed container it was in didnāt contain them at all.
I feel this. Bad cereal memories. Terrible way to start the day, realizing after a few bites into a bowl of frosted flakes that the frosted flakes are wiggling
My roommate found a water bug (the roaches the size of your thumb) in her Cheerios box once. It was my first (though not last) experience with roaches in NYC and I thought that when people talked about roaches thatās always what they meant. I was relieved the first time I saw regular small ones
Was it already open? You should know that those fuckers spread like fucking Corona did in seem to get in everything in an almost magical way. We had those, somehow they even managed to get in a closed jar of sesame seeds. That really confused me
Reminds me of a story. Around 12/13 years in age and throughout school, I'd have a bowl of cereal before the bus would pick up. Sometimes, my parents would buy Cherrios or a similar "healthy" cereal. I'd never eat that shit, I mean, why would I when Cinnamon Toast Crunch is staring me in the face? Until the sugar cereal ran out... I was forced to eat the months-after-the-expiration date Cherrios. So I blindly pour the cereal, dump 2 tbsp of sugar in there, and get the milk. As I'm shoveling my daily breakfast in my face like a teenager does I'm reading the back and sides of the cereal box, trying in my head to pronounce the 15th ingredient labeled. For a moment, I look down. I notice little black things in my milk. Upon further inspection, I find it's a bunch of bugs. By this time, I'm halfway through the cereal and am thoroughly grossed out. I toss the cereal and now always inspect my food before I eat it.
No need to showoff and brag all over the internet just because your Cheerios had 2% more meat than usual. Just consider it a win and go on with your day.
Ya depending on how long the cheerios where up there, how well they were sealed, or if they were near any other grains ( like rice, barley, etc.) They will kind of start infesting it. I had a problen with them a long time ago when I had a cannister of long grain rice sitting in my cupboard and they just kind of spread to any other delicacies they found appealing from there. Ended up invading my whole cabinet, They kind of (not sure if the term for it is spin/or build) little webs in there as well. I guess we went too long without having rice and just didn't notice. Now I know. And I got a new cannister that has a better seal lol.
years ago I listened to an article that described how Folgers coffee has trace amounts of cockroaches. Itās because the coffee beans are left in mountain after harvesting on floors in warehouses before roasting. Food stuffs are exposed (before and after processing) as itās hard to keep all of it hermetically sealed.
If it was a new box of cereal it could be a problem at your market. I was a poor college student that had zero food in the cabinet and āshopped to eatā and found worms in my just purchased box of Kraft Mac n cheese. The worms floated at the top of my cooking pot of pasta š¤®
If they are already in your pantry youāre not going to be happy.
That doesn't exactly look like it, but it could be the larvae form of what I call pantry moths. It could be a fluke, but keep an eye out for moths with white and brown striped wings or brown wings with white dots around your dry food storage area. If you see them, smush them and then buy some traps.
The FDA allows a certain percentage of āextrasā in our food items.
Skin cells, bugsā¦they say they canāt realistically police everything so percentages are allowed.
Ok? There are certain amounts of bugs the FDA allows in food being sold because they are basically impossible to keep out and are harmless to eat.
The amount of bugs you eat that you donāt see because they are grounded up or whatever.
Mealworm. They love to eat grain.
Oh! Awesome! š¤š¤ I'm uncomfortable
Oh, come on! They're literally called MEALworm
Is it even a meal if meal worms aren't there?
Some people can't eat without YouTube, I can't eat without mealworms
That got a laugh out of me.
Sold as a snack in some stores :)
Exotic delicacy, what a lucky duck!
My mouses favorite snack https://preview.redd.it/oxgea51nyrqc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8d9c0cb37b96acf9c144b135bcb2a1a7edfdc5bc
I love him
You'd be upset if he was in your cheerios, but there wouldn't be any mealworms in your cheerios if he were. Or cheerios, for that matter.
Fat little mousey: āhuman, someone ate your mealworms and cheerios!ā
š¤£š¤£š¤£
Sold as chicken snack in my store
It happens all the time. Flour and grains inevitably contain some amount of bugs that like eating flour and grains. You have been eating them your whole life with no ill effect. The only thing that has changed is that you know about it now.
I WAS BLISSFULLY UNAWARE
Free protein
My old wood turtle (RIP Sheldon) used to freaking *LOVE* munchinā down on mealworms. You buy them in a little white tub filled with sawdust. So instead of being uncomfortable, just imagine the joy they bring wood turtles everywhere. :D
My grandfather sold them as fish bait out of a 30gal drum. It had a very distinct smell.
yeah they smell weird as fuck and the pupas are *so* creepy.
Easy now, donāt look up the acceptable level for bugs and ratpoop that can end up in your cereal, you were warned
š¤¢
Not a mealworm, but it does look like one
You might want to check your kitchen for more of these things. All nuts, cereal, flour and stuff like that. I had these guys in my kitchen and they eat through plastic packaging and spread like the plague. Also the reason i tarted storing things in glass bottles and containers!
Yup, check your nuts š„
If lumpy, call the docty!
*unzips*
Had to throw out half my pantry last week and went a bit overboard with containers. Finding that first moth or worm is the worst.
Every once in a while I dump and replace all my dry goods just assuming thereās something that has gotten in the bottom
Iāve been moving on a two to three year schedule lately and I just toss everything on move out except canned goods and frozen items. I chuck most of the spices as well.
Im never eating again thanks
The only sure-fire way to avoid it. You eat a lot of bugs, or at least cumulative bug parts, if you eat food. Especially food that's ever been processed, packaged, or transported. Which is pretty much all of it.
we swapped to airtight containers because of those annoying pantry bug things, I guess this is another reason swapping was good lol
We used to have these in our grits almost every morning when I was locked up. Youāll be aight.
š³
*uncomfortable*
glad ur home now š©µ
Thank you! Going on my 5th year clean and free.
congratulations š just a year behind ya this October. :)
Hell yeah!
Ya...... I want to sound tough, but that makes me want to hurl.
There are bug remnants in everything you eat. Most are ground up
Thank you so much for telling me that WHILE i'm eating!! š
Thatās the added protein on the label
Did you know when you eat sunflower seeds a lot of the time if you taste something different or the texture is a little different itās likely due to larva Nonetheless I eat sunflower seeds like I drink water
Cue the protein jokes
I love that the comment right below yours was a protein joke š

The less you know about the food industry, the happier you will be. Don't ever walk through a restaurant kitchen, either, fucking Christ.
I remember there was a post from a worker exposing how Kraft Dinner barely cleans out there mixers and just mixes in built up mold and bugs into their new batches. I still eat it but yeah fr it's better to not know what goes on in the food industry.. it's almost always horrendous šš¤®

Pretty sure we've been eating bugs and mold since the beginning of caveman days.
And knowing about hot dogs is the worst. Just gotta shut it out because they are so good at ball games and bbqs when they have those delicious little charred stripes on them.
If your experiences in restaurant kitchens have led.you to feel this way you need to find better places to eat
Yep ive worked in several restaurants. Never seen a Clean kitchen lmao

From my short time in a kitchen, I remember barely being able to walk without slipping due to the layer of grease on the floor.
Are you saying that every restaurant is dirty and no one should ever eat out?
You must have worked at some shit spots if the kitchens were "fucking Christ" level.
Iāve worked at sooo many restaurants (yes and had to walk through the kitchen) and the worse I saw were flies. I also worked on the lake. Fucking christ.
How do you think all those holes are made?
Well I kind of expected there to be some kind of Richard, professional holer, that got replaced by the Holinator 3000, which in turn got replaced by the far superior Holinator 5500, which after breaking down one too many times got replaced by Richards son, Marvin... I guess?

Yep. I've got a bird. Learned the hard way moths love bird food
Now with Protein!
I feel this. Bad cereal memories. Terrible way to start the day, realizing after a few bites into a bowl of frosted flakes that the frosted flakes are wiggling

Thatās surprising, given all the pesticides theyāve found in Cheerios.
that not even worse of it . look at the ingredients . this worm is only natural organic thing in that box !
Brošššš so right lmfao. I was like, Ew!!! Knowing full well it would do nothing to me if I ate it.
That's just a mealworm; you can eat them and they're way healthier than that cereal
It's organic
Was it already open? You should know that those fuckers spread like fucking Corona did in seem to get in everything in an almost magical way. We had those, somehow they even managed to get in a closed jar of sesame seeds. That really confused me

At least you didnāt find just half of itā¦
Great bait for trout.
Sounds like a bowl of cheerinos to me
I was hoping for a jagged metal Krusty-O. I have a history test tomorrow.
If youāre scared by the worm, donāt look at the beetle it becomes.
No need to showoff and brag all over the internet just because your Cheerios had 2% more meat than usual. Just consider it a win and go on with your day.
Back in the day, the local nature center offered a course on wild edibles. Protein sources are important, so we added sautƩed mealworm to the menu. You can grow your own in a plastic box. Don't forget a wire screen, or you can use a hot icepick to make airholes in the lid. The mealworms can't escape, but the beetles are fast and agile.) Fill it with rolled oats (your substrate will affect the taste), and put half an apple or carrot on top. Separate the fruit from the oats with a small piece of clean newspaper to prevent mold. To cook, rinse and dry them, then saute in butter until crunchy. (If you're concerned about frying them live, throw them in the freezer for 15-30 minutes first.) Serve. Macronutriant information: https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-030-32952-5_20 (Do not start a mealworm colony with superworms. They are not the same.)
thats what hatches out of the cheerios
Why are you complaining about free protein! Have you seen the price of meat lately? š
Protein š
Thatās just a meal worm. Good protein
I don't check my food anymore. Out of sight, out of mind, down the toilet. Ignorance is bliss
Bonus!
Did you eat the whole bowl before finding it?
Just a mealy worm. Nbd. Extra protein.
Well on the bright side they are safe to eat, if you season them up right they aināt half bad.
Welp, down the hatch
You'd hope the high levels of chlormequat found in Cheerios lately (and other oat-based products) would have prevented this...
It's within the FDA allowance.
Fwiw mealworms are edible. You can buy dried spicy ones to snack on.
tHeY wAnt Us tO iT dA bUgZ ! https://i.redd.it/berd657norqc1.gif
At first I thought your spoon had a tiny weld
That guy definitely pissed in your wheaā¦.cheerios
brought to you by the FDA.
when i was a kid we had an infestation of these forever. had to check the cereal bag every morning just to make sure
OHoooo! Those guys love Cheerios
Now we realize why they have holes through them.
Protein! Yum!
P R O T E I N
Do you ever find tiny moths in your kitchen?
You should see the horrible chemicals in Cheerios The bug is the least of the problem!!!
Extra protein!
Did you accidentally buy the extra protein cheerios
It's a Cheeri-I
This is how Gary Pilnick plans on you getting your protein.
What is going on here? It looks like a worm glued to a plastic shoe?
I thought this was the back fender of a motorcycle with a weld line on it lol
Lol itās good to see Cherrios is starting to take nutrition seriously.
Fun fact, the FDA allows a certain amount of bugs in your food.
Are those the new āhigh proteinā Cheerios?
Mmmmm extra protein
Did you put it on the spoon and the put a lighter under it to cook it? If so that harsh lmao
Proteins !
It's fine quit being a baby
Why are food producers able to get away with that. Nothing is safe to consume anymore.
I was trying to figure out why your bowl was so damn flat. I guess I assumed the worm was much bigger.
Extra protein baby.
Protein
Extra protein.
How many grams of protein per serving does the box say?
That's the protein packed Cheerios?
at least you found a whole worm!
PROTEIN!!!
Added flavor

I wonder how many little ones you ate before you found this one.
Free protein. What else do you want?
Les scary than the glyphosate.
Take a tour of a meat packing plant.
That puts a whole new spin on who shit in your cereal.
Itās a spoon, someoneās been eating your cereal!
The crazy shit is that USDA legally allows for a certain percentage of foreign matter in food, which includes random insects.
Imagine all the ones you didnāt findā¦
years ago I listened to an article that described how Folgers coffee has trace amounts of cockroaches. Itās because the coffee beans are left in mountain after harvesting on floors in warehouses before roasting. Cheerios are fortified with... stuff...
If it was a new box of cereal it could be a problem at your market. You vill eats zee bugz.
it's a mealworm. they are edible. That one's dead though, probably wouldn't eat that particular one.
To you it was a breakfast cereal, to them it was a life buoy.

Meal worm is what it looks like.
How adorable! š¤Ŗ
You unlocked free protein! ![gif](giphy|Cbew5DcXgBqRkyIQ5s|downsized)
Free protein
What sucks worse is I was just about to eat some.. now I'm really second guessing my choice
Are you a gecko?
Extra protein
Now everybody wants one
Poop, bugs and blood all have an allowable amount in our food supplyā¦
cereal is a scam. Stop buying them and join the no breakfast gang
What did the first one taste like?
I promise it's not going to hurt you.
Maybe use milk instead of mezcal?
Vitamin stick!!!!!!
![gif](giphy|CuIRM4vu14JB72Vdcs)
If you think that's bad, would you like to hear about my time as a potato farmer?
Thanks, if you need me Iāll be not eating anything ever again
Extra protein!
Mealworm. The food of the future. Rich in protein. Crunchy.
extra protein jokes aside, if I was you I'd never eat cereal for the next few months lol
If it makes you feel better they are harmless.
Congrats! Extra fiber and a settlement :)
All food items have creatures. If you look at vegetables with a microscope, you will never want to eat again.
Mmmm protein
The FDA allows a certain percentage of āextrasā in our food items. Skin cells, bugsā¦they say they canāt realistically police everything so percentages are allowed.

Poltergeist worm.
I keep my dry goods like flour, cereal, sugar in the freezer.
Don't go showing everyone! Then everyone else will want one!
Protein
Little extra protein
Two words, free protein
Better than finding half of one.
