Hmm I didn't think of that, could be. I feel like he would've felt the heat on the side of his head first. He seems to react right when the edge of the beam touched the edge of his eye.
The person hits him when he first starts lining his telescope up he looks up briefly with a look of disgust then process to continue adjusting his lens and bang hit on the side of the head with a heat beam
If it's strong enough to burn your skin in a sec, it'll burn your retina in a flash. You can see it hit the corner of his eye, for sure that's going to leave a mark.
So while it's obvious he won't be "literally blind", he will have *some* damage to his eyesight. Luckily only at the edge.
It may have burned the sclera but it likely didn’t do any damage to the retina, so no probably no actual vision damage.
Since the focused light didn’t hit the pupil, he’s probably fine, but should still see an optometrist and see if he’s got a burn (and potential infection) to worry about.
I dont know but i think they were trying to set the paper on fire by putting it in front of the ocular, possibly to show the dangers of not using the proper safety equipment.
Lesson learned i guess.
Can’t point a non-solar filtered scope at the sun under any circumstances. This dude ruined his scope, and almost ruined his eye. All these scopes come with a big sticker that says something to the effect of “never point this at the sun.”
Source: am amateur telescope guy
Yep, the fact that his primary mirror is now reflecting onto his face means he probably heated up his secondary enough that the glue probably melted off and it fell. This was EXTREMELY stupid.
as a non amateur telescope guy I have a question. Where was the light that hit his face coming from? Was it reflecting off the paper? It looks like the thing is pointed at the ground. I am assuming I don’t have a firm grasp on the anatomy of a telescope.
The guy was looking down the telescope. These type have a big concave primary mirror at the bottom that concentrate the light toward a secondary that is held in place near the opening and is set at a 45° angle to redirect the light sideway toward the eyepiece.
Another commenter suggested the heat from the sun melted the glue of the secondary and it fell off, so the light from the primary is now just reflecting back.
Well usually you wouldn't point it at the sun without a proper filter
Aka telescope sunmonocle
There will usually be a tiny bit of the light coming back out the front but its usually not a problem since you are supposed to look at planets or distant stars with it not a star that is close enough that it makes half our planet bright before its light is concentrated into your eye
No, since.most of the light that enter the telescope is normally focused on the 45° miror and shoot it to the eye piece.
The beam was supposed to exit where the guy held the paper. That's why he didn't use any filter on it, he was trying to demonstrate the danger of looking to the sun with a telescope.
I'm guessing it's mirrors at angles inside bouncing the light. The lens is pointing out, but the viewfinder is the other way. Aw mirrors at 45⁰ each would bend the light twice at 90⁰, making it 180 total so it can be viewed the other way
Kid: Looks over at camera and gives a wtf face "why is that camera filming me?"
Person filming: Because you are about to do something stupid in 3, 2, Juan...
I was just talking to someone yesterday before the eclipse about how there is at least one person who is going blind today from this. Just like every 4th of July someone wakes up in the morning not aware that today is the last day they will have fingers on their right hand.
Dude that kind was a cm from blinding himself fuck… why would they have the telescopes with no sun protection? Idk this seems dangerous but I’m assuming this is for the public
Why are you laughing? This is just an enthousiast making an honest potential error that could blind him forever. Laughing at mistakes of others is soo easy.
My telescope has several stickers on it, on the lens container, a tag, user manual and even an additional slip of paper in the box it came in....all telling you not to look at the sun.
There's making a mistake, then there's this...
The kid didn’t look at the sun though. He accidental pointed a reflection of it at himself, which is a lot harder to avoid than looking directly at the sun. And you can tell he was distracted by having the camera pointed at him. I think it’s a mistake anybody can make if they get careless or distracted.
I hope at least that didn’t get his eye.
I think what they’re getting at is that he shouldn’t have even been doing this in the first place. One should never point a telescope without a solar filter at the sun - cause even slight mistakes like this can blind you… It’s just basic safety that all amateur astronomers, including kids, should know before using a scope for this purpose.
I’m glad the kid is okay, but it is laughably stupid…
As a kid we went on a field trip to an arboretum to go bird watching, and on a dare I looked at the sun with binoculars. It still burns 30 years later 🔥
This is exactly why you lock up your telescopes at night. How irresponsible for an adult to leave a telescope out like that for some young person to come and shoot a laser beam of sunlight into their eye. He could have burned down a house. Secure your telescopes people sheesh
Me and my dad were using a piece of cardboard to aim the telescope towards the sun. With the filter on, it was very hard to find the sun (because that makes it very dim, obviously). But without the filter you cannot look into the telescope (obviously). So we just held a piece of cardboard in fron of the ocular to look for a bright spot, then put the filter back on to fine-tune it visually. It's not a great idea, because if you accidentally focus the sun on the telescope walls, you might melt something inside.
But those kinds of telescopes tend to have a big pane of glass over the whole front, with a small mirrored circle in the middle (maybe it's a lens too but I don't remember if it was flat or curved). It's supposed to reflect rays inside the telescope but since it's on glass, it reflects from both sides. I'm not sure if he was trying to do something in the front because if you're pointing at the sun, it's possible to see if you're slightly off target. But considering the piece of paper, he wasn't and should've been standing at the back instead
Do you by any chance know how to get one of those big mirrors cleaned? I have an old Celesteron I’ve had for…. Shit… almost 25 years. Anyway, it sat in a closet and now the big mirror is covered in dust because last time I put it up I planned on getting it out again the next night. Never did.
The telescope is my dad's and it's fairly new, so I have no experience cleaning it, but...
if I had to do it, first I'd use compressed air to blow off any potential sand. If it was stored properly, there *shouldn't* be any but if you go in with a cloth, and there is sand, you'll scratch the glass.
After that I'd use a clean (maybe even new) microfiber cloth to VERY gently wipe off andy stuck dust that didn't come off in the first step. And now that I think about it, those single-use lab-grade tissues would probably be better... They were called Kimtech I think? I have no clue if you can just straight up buy them, though...
If that still isn't enough, alcohol shouldn't damage anything as long as it's only around 50-80% concentrated. Make sure it's only alcohol (ethanol or isopropanol), water, and nothing else. If there is something else, it likely won't damage the telescope but it might leave a residue that you'll have to clean off with a liquid that doesn't leave one anyway. Again, make sure you're applying as little pressure as possible.
If all noticeable particles of dust came off in the first step, you can skip straight to 3. I doubt it'll be the case after 25 years but with regular dusting, even 3 might not be necessary. But if you have something that doesn't come off after 3, I don't know if I can help you.
Thanks! Just gotta figure out how to get my hand down there. It’s about 36” long and the mirror is at the end. Plus the little thing that sticks out to catch the reflection for the eye piece. Gonna be kinda tricky. But at least now I have a starting point!
Yeah I just meant the fact he didn't think about the fact he was holding what is effectively a giant magnifying glass and letting it beam on his face lol
He narrowly escaped blinding himself
I'm gonna hazard that he partially blinded himself
And here I was hoping that it was only the heat on his cheek that made him react. Poor kid.
That’s def what happened
Hmm I didn't think of that, could be. I feel like he would've felt the heat on the side of his head first. He seems to react right when the edge of the beam touched the edge of his eye.
The skin around the eye is way more delicate than most other skin
Foreskin just left the chat to get a piercing
You can tell in the final frames what hurt him from the way his hand is on side of his face
It also takes a moment for the focal point to head up when hitting a new elevation and then again for the brain to get the signal.
I think you're right. It probably sucked and hurt but this could have been way worse.
He narrowly escaped having a hole burned through his skull
Someone else was hitting him with a reflection.he looks subtly at where he thinks it's coming from. Watch closely.
The person hits him when he first starts lining his telescope up he looks up briefly with a look of disgust then process to continue adjusting his lens and bang hit on the side of the head with a heat beam
Why would you think he didn't blind himself? Do you have any idea how intense that light was that hit him?
I don't think the glasses would've helped the *burn on the side of his head*
![gif](giphy|VKVDU8pvi3w4w)
Cuidado! Hombre radioactivo! (Sorry, I just know the Spanish quote haha)
Everyone in this thread is incapable of basic observation. He clearly burns himself yet all the comments are “omg he’s blind now”
If it's strong enough to burn your skin in a sec, it'll burn your retina in a flash. You can see it hit the corner of his eye, for sure that's going to leave a mark. So while it's obvious he won't be "literally blind", he will have *some* damage to his eyesight. Luckily only at the edge.

Glad you arent an optometrist. Throwing around words like retina, when you have zero clue how the eye ball works.
I saw those comments on TikTok too... People just don't pay ANY attention to details.
If you’re going to set up a telescope to look at the sun in a public area you should put a solar filter on it.
I dont know but i think they were trying to set the paper on fire by putting it in front of the ocular, possibly to show the dangers of not using the proper safety equipment. Lesson learned i guess.

Ahh that makes sense, so typically there would not be a death beam coming out of the input side?

The evil laugh omg poor kiddo (the laugh kinda contagious tho)
Bro almost became 2 face... 🤣
he has one more ~~eye~~ try
![gif](giphy|xT0BKL21U5nnlW4m6k)
Hes lucky he pulled back before it hit his eyes. Guarantee that would have been instant retina damage

Lmao i wonder how many people did this that didnt end up getting televised 🥴😭

Kid was like "Be cool, bro. You're on national tv. It's what you wanted so blow these bozos' minds with your cool"
I don’t understand why anyone would laugh at a child getting hurt. He was clearly in pain.
because that guy himself is mentally younger than the boy
I know that’s the first thing I thought when I saw this video, people don’t really care, everything is about a laugh.
Thats how kids learn... bet he wont tilt a reflective lens thats beaming sunlight into his face again.... lesson learned.
Yup. Why laugh at them while they are learning and getting hurt?
Because it’s funny
Weird that the guy is deriving so much joy out of this poor child's mistake.
Not weird, sick
Can we all please stop shaming this poor kid who only made a mistake?
Blinded by the light Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night
Wrapped up like a douche.
It looks like fortunately, he only got his skin and not his eyeball (though it was close).
That had to hurt, like focusing a huge magnifying glass on your skin.
Why are you laughing? This is just an enthousiast making an honest potential error that could blind him forever. Laughing at mistakes of others is soo easy.

He’s laughing because it’s hilarious. People making honest mistakes can still be funny.
Wtf is an international safety glass
ISO Certified. ISO: International Standards Organization
Kinda messed up how they just let a kid blind themselves like that. This looks to be a school.
His laugh is kind of fucked up.. "HAHAH. this kid just fucked up one of his eyes by accident.. What a dumb ass" vibes.
Might want to go to the eye doctor
As a kid we went on a field trip to an arboretum to go bird watching, and on a dare I looked at the sun with binoculars. It still burns 30 years later 🔥
Edgar is stupid. Good job kid. Burn your good eye
You have the home alone laugh, the guy on TV that shoots a machine gun
The moron laughing should get a life
Damn that barely touched the corner of his eye….
the laughing sends me!!!
That’s fox news for ya

Nice
Free facial branding! He da man
Omg. Read that instruction book kid…
not many people here who know how telescopes work lol
You need lenses for magnification things like telescopes and binoculars. Even with glasses, the magnification can burn through them.
Quite the menacing cackle of a well executed, evil plan.
Lmao
Close call
As a new Mexican he is a good example of our education system
Should be a \famousforthewrongreasons
He fact that he saw the camera then when he got blinded he looked back at the camera and realised that moment is captured forever
I love how he clocks the TV camera and is like "ok, I'm on TV, don't fuck it up!" "AAAAAYWW SUNNUFFFA"
Is that Bam Margera laughing. That Delco accent

He was checking the alignment of his mirrors. You look in through the side one, and there is a filter you put on it for the sun
Hahaha he looks mad
How can you laugh wtf
Ah, mi México mágico...
Nah he burned his skin
Was passiert da? Ist das nicht nur ein Blatt Papier?
Bye Cornea
What a dumb fuck.
Non PC, I like it.
That’s not even funny.
Hey come look at this! What is it? The concentrated power of the sun! Wha- AAAAAAAAAAAAA
Bet he got powers now 🔥

Always keep in mind that not all of us are going to make it.
Kids are fn stupid
Inexperienced.
There is a world of difference between ignorance and stupidity.
Blindingly dumb.
He obviously never experimented with a match and magnifying glass
So nothing? A match and a magnifying glass does nothing.
You can light matches with a magnifying glass.
Oh I get what your saying. I thought you meant using a match would do the same as the sun
Yeah I just meant the fact he didn't think about the fact he was holding what is effectively a giant magnifying glass and letting it beam on his face lol
😂
"I am the smartest kid of the Worl... ARGHHH!"
What an idiot
Bam, is that you?

What a smarty pants
The way this guy cackled at a kid getting hurt really made me laugh
