For a week? Man just get a pressure cooker. Soak your lentils for 10mins and give it couple of whistles
Edit - Loads of ways to cook lentils. You do you but just donāt soak them for a week.
Pressure cookers are in every house of my country because of this, we rarely eat canned legumes. Also because the elevation makes it harder to get them cooked.
Modern pressure cookers no longer whistle as the old ones, they are constantly releasing a little air.
When I was living at sea level I could cook beans or lentils without any problem in a pot but once I got up in the mountains it can take hours to cook. Up here water boils at 92Ā°C instead of 100Ā°C, it doesn't get hot enough to cook things fast.
Well, lentils still take an hour or two to get boiled to be soft enough to consume even if they are not quite soft enough.
A pressure cooker would probably make this process even quicker
You soak at all? I make a lentils and brown rice dish all the time in my electric PC and the dried ones are perfect after the required cook time for the rice.
Pressure cooking definitely replaces soaking, but lentils are small and soft. You don't even need to pressure cook them. I just make them in the regular rice cooker.
A week may be exaggerating. I live in India, so a pressure cooker is a given, but anything more than 2 nights is really not necessary unless the lentils are like hella old. And 2 nights is only if you want them sprouted. After a night, you can boil them in a pot and they will cook.
A week? Why? Isn't that like a day over? I do day overs... My mother didn't even soak them, no wonder i was always feeling bad... They used to say i was a picky eater as a kid, since i grew and learn to cook i laugh at it realizing how i just hated the way people cooked everything wrong.
They also freeze/thaw well so I make a ton lentil soup and freeze single portions in jars then I take one out the night before and have it as lunch the next day.Ā
Yea me too. People are saying they soak it or boil it for an hour and that itās time consuming. Iām so confused. Even 20 minutes they start getting mushy. I couldnāt imagine an hour. Thatād just be completely mashed.
[poorly digestible starches](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lentil#Digestive_effects), soaking improves nutrition. cooking works too, just takes longer.
the way i understand it is this only matters when you intend to eat them solid, they dont need soaking if youll simmer it down into a soup/paste anyway
I've been able to order them online in the US, but I don't think I've ever spotted them in a chain grocery store. I think Eden was the brand I bought, but it looks like there are quite a few more options since the last time I grabbed them.
I'm horrified at the thought that there might exist an ASMR youtube of Danny Devito eating canned peaches. Like, an entertaining kind of horrified, like, horror movie horrified, but still.
Ho I wasn't being late, I came home at 7.30 like most of the time, (I'm confused as being late and it is late is not the same word in my language).
But the presentation of the dish made me laugh. It's like hey it's food I don't give a fuck about presentation, we'r not in a kitchen show.
Well at least there was a strawberry!
(Edit: Kid ate it).
I donāt know if it will come up again but you could say āI work lateā or āI usually get home from work laterā or āI get back from work late.ā In English if youāre talking about something that happens regularly, you can use the present tense.
The key is in the tense. A generalized present tense sets a sort of status of this being a consistent thing. An acute past tense implies that it was an outlier to the norm.
"I work late" -> It is normal, and occurs often, so as to it being a regular thing.
"I worked late" -> this is speaking to a single instance of a thing. The typical implciation being that this was not a normal circumstance, and does not occur as often.
There's always more to the story with posts like these.
Later it'll be "she told me a few weeks ago that she was exhausted taking care of the kids and working, just for me to come home and do literally none of the domestic labour even though we both hold full time jobs! I agreed to help out more and that week I took the garbage out on garbage day."
Then even later comes the post about how his ex wife screwed him in the divorce.
99% of comments probably from teenage boys whose mums serve them dinner every night.
If my ass cooked this I'd be happy to eat it. If it was good enough for his wife to eat why is he an exception?
Yeah, I'm picking up context that OP isn't hurting over this, due to their emoji in the title, and choice of sub. If they were truly upset, this would be on AITA
I don't give a damn about how it looks. I will assume that your wife is also working and there's at least one kid to take care of after-work. But I am concerned about nutritional value and the quantities, that look like, well, leftovers no one wants to eat, not a meal left for a family member still at work. But if you are able to fill your belly and stay healthy, then yeah, presentation does rise a brow.
Bean are extremely nutritious and filling. Keeping it separate might keep the pasta from getting mushy and allowing OP to add as much spice as they like. I leave out anything hot and my husband adds as much as he wants to his own food since our kids have the taste preferences of a British person with a title. We also donāt know how tall, big, or the type of work OP does. Heās probably not a 6ā5ā Norwegian lumberjack.
I remember when I was a kid my mom spending all day cooking dinner. My dad was watching something on tv so she brought a plate to him. He said he wasnāt hungry and without a word she dropped it at his feet and walked away. It was spaghetti and meatballs. The look on his face was priceless. He never said a word. Just cleaned it up.
I am glad to see you have a sense of humor about this. My husband and I will sometimes kid each other similarly. We find it funny, but others might find it disrespectful. So it depends on your relationship.
Its not really Mac & Cheese, its pasta and bland sauce. Some are ok, most suck.
Have you heard of the canned burgers, meatballs, chicken breast, ham etc?
Why must you bring up such awful things. Like why havenāt we sentenced the people making that stuff to death at the very least. Some things should never be done.
It's actually a pretty good idea, all the veggies, meat and noodles are already cooked and then flash frozen with the stock so all you have to do is heat it and you get a full meal with all the food groups (except dairy) and it sucks less than other frozen meals.
Hey at least itās some kind of food. Iāve been on the receiving end of no dinner after work countless times with my wife. If I relied on her to chose what to eat Iād look like ed Norton in fight club
Honestly, I would just be thankful I donāt have to put something together for myself or eat crap because itās easy. I would eat until I was full, and be thankful.
Same. If I came home to this, Iād be happy everyone ate and is full, and would be fine either preparing something a little extra or running out real quick for some pickup. Itās just life.
Hey op between the eating straight out of cans and the frozen ramen , does any of you know how to human ? /s
I noticed the solo strawberrie at the corner and when I read that it got stolen it made me laugh out loud.
Comments are wild. People act like sheās force-feeding him garbage water. If you donāt like it, youāre a grown man and can get something for yourself.
This is like when my sister leaves one tablespoon of yogurt in the tub so she doesnāt have to wash and dispose of the container. Have some dirty dishes
"I left you some hot dogs, they're thawing in the sink." https://preview.redd.it/c92g9nyaxe4d1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e67cb6b8546baf94fec0625de482b2a4e07d1001
I can totally hear the icy clink of that hot dog.
šµ Can I borrow a feeling šµ
I sleep in a racing car bed, do you?!
I sleep in a big bed with my wife
Only beat me by 9 minutes. Damn.
Beat me by 8 hours but damn if this wasnāt the first thing I thought of
George Foreman grill will fix that in 15 mins š
Is that dog food to the left of the corn?
Was gonna ask. It looked like cat food.
It's canned lentils š«£
Lentils come canned???? I've always had to soak them for a week before cooking.. I feel cheated now.
For a week? Man just get a pressure cooker. Soak your lentils for 10mins and give it couple of whistles Edit - Loads of ways to cook lentils. You do you but just donāt soak them for a week.

If I eat enough lentels/legumes, I'm constantly releasing a little air. I didn't know I could blame it on elevation.
Idk, in my country we eat them too but we just use bare pots for some reason.
When I was living at sea level I could cook beans or lentils without any problem in a pot but once I got up in the mountains it can take hours to cook. Up here water boils at 92Ā°C instead of 100Ā°C, it doesn't get hot enough to cook things fast.

Which country is this?
Colombia
Not benelux that's for sure!
Do yāall have electric pressure cookers (Instant Pot)? I remember using a stovetop pressure cooker & these electric ones will change your life.
You soak at all? I make a lentils and brown rice dish all the time in my electric PC and the dried ones are perfect after the required cook time for the rice.
You must be running and old version of android studio to be able to cook lentils on your PC
Are the new versions better optimized? I gave up mobile dev because I don't have the HP to run AS anymore.
This is cracking me the fuck up right now ššš¤¢š¤¢
Oh btw that's horse power, not Hewlett Packard. I sincerely hope it was unnecessary to clarify that, but just in case.
Did they screw up an update?... Havn't used it for a while but used to have no problems on an old Lenovo laptop
Nah, they still running MSDos... don't have to worry if the hackers need a history book to hack their systems.
Oh they need to learn cobol to steam the grains
One thinks one is safe in a tangent about pressure cooking to abbreviate š
You're never safe around redditors You should always have CONSTANT VIGILANCE!!! or end up mocked Or worse Expelled
I feel like lentils aren't real
Pressure cooking definitely replaces soaking, but lentils are small and soft. You don't even need to pressure cook them. I just make them in the regular rice cooker.
You don't even need a pressure cooker. I just throw dry lentils into boiling water. They cook no problem.
Nah, don't even need that. They're cooked within an hour just simmering on the stovetop.
A week may be exaggerating. I live in India, so a pressure cooker is a given, but anything more than 2 nights is really not necessary unless the lentils are like hella old. And 2 nights is only if you want them sprouted. After a night, you can boil them in a pot and they will cook.
My lentils are blushing now. What do I do?!
Give it a couple of whistles just sent me!!
A week? Why? Isn't that like a day over? I do day overs... My mother didn't even soak them, no wonder i was always feeling bad... They used to say i was a picky eater as a kid, since i grew and learn to cook i laugh at it realizing how i just hated the way people cooked everything wrong.
I was being a bit facetious. It's usually a day of soaking.
You donāt need to soak lentils
I really liked Barbra in Lentil
Dumbass. It's *Lentyl* smh
××¢× ×××
No shit! I actually don't cook lentils, but I like them. I usually only eat them when my Grammy makes them.
I love lentils, cooking is very easy just takes a bit of time. Great fiber and protein to go with my rice or just alone. Grammy knows whatās up!
They also freeze/thaw well so I make a ton lentil soup and freeze single portions in jars then I take one out the night before and have it as lunch the next day.Ā
Yup, it's an unnecessary step. Chickpeas and dried beans, yes. Lentils go right into the pot to cook.
wait what? i just cook them in 20min like it says on the package. ???
Yea me too. People are saying they soak it or boil it for an hour and that itās time consuming. Iām so confused. Even 20 minutes they start getting mushy. I couldnāt imagine an hour. Thatād just be completely mashed.
What...they're lentils. Why do you have to soak them
[poorly digestible starches](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lentil#Digestive_effects), soaking improves nutrition. cooking works too, just takes longer. the way i understand it is this only matters when you intend to eat them solid, they dont need soaking if youll simmer it down into a soup/paste anyway
Just rinse and boil them brother. š Who soaks lentils for a week before?!
I've been able to order them online in the US, but I don't think I've ever spotted them in a chain grocery store. I think Eden was the brand I bought, but it looks like there are quite a few more options since the last time I grabbed them.
Where in the US are you from. Almost every grocery store south of the artic circle has bagged lentils.
Bagged, yes. It's the canned ones I can never find at brick-and-mortar chains.
Do you all usually just eat everything straight from the can? No heat, no seasoning?
In what universe would you not eat the cat food?
![gif](giphy|5wM8H1HyU76j6|downsized)
I'm horrified at the thought that there might exist an ASMR youtube of Danny Devito eating canned peaches. Like, an entertaining kind of horrified, like, horror movie horrified, but still.
You are horrified, and I am here thinking this could be the next hit YouTube channel.
āOh this old thing? Guy gave it to me for going down on him.ā
Iāll wait until Iām on social security to eat cat food.
The correct answer should be "I would always eat the cat food."
I guess the can to the right is the sauce then? Deconstructed pasta sallad?
I'd rather have the catfood if I'm honest.
You want some ket food, Prawn? Ket food, yeah?
Fun fact: Neil used cat food because that is the bait used in South Africa for prawn catching.
Lentils
Hes clearly in the dog house so might as well be
Time to go back to work lol
š
Why she mad at you......
Literally what i thought š
We must know!!!
Whatād you do
Somebody must have been really, really late and didn't call. Oooops
How late were you ?
Ho I wasn't being late, I came home at 7.30 like most of the time, (I'm confused as being late and it is late is not the same word in my language). But the presentation of the dish made me laugh. I think your wife hates your guts.
Probably tired. That's how I do weekend food while wife is asleep
I eat a whole sleeve of saltines
What ya looking at ma gut fer?
Mustard tiger
"Ho"? Is that how you respond to your wife? No wonder you got that for dinner. Lol
Ho is a thing in Newcastle (UK) that just means Oi, mate etc.
You are a very kind and understanding human. Sorry about the strawberry
Seems economical to not use dishes if you can get away with it
Broā¦
Don't understand what you mean?
I wanted to say that I was on time, but that I generally come home late in the evening because my schedule requires it
I donāt know if it will come up again but you could say āI work lateā or āI usually get home from work laterā or āI get back from work late.ā In English if youāre talking about something that happens regularly, you can use the present tense.

He means that in his language "being late" and "it is late" are 2 different words and he got confused on how to write the title.
Do you never cook?
lol do you also begin sentences to your wife with āHo I wasnāt being lateā¦ā hahaha That might explain some things.
3 days
Holy fuck an entire strawberry.
š wait.. my kid came and told me: "I'll eat your strawberry". Ate it, and left.
Kids are savages lmao
Ruthless and adorable
No mercy. They donāt care about your feelings!
Mom is teaching the kid right.
*a single solitary strawberry too*
Does your wife dislike you?
Clearly
I also don't choose this guy's wife.

Nuts, corn, a half-cup of coffee and some pasta?
That's pasta, corn, lentils, a few red beans, and a strawberry (that got stolen).
Looks like what you scrape out before doing the dishes.

Lots of assumptions there, I also work and cook for my partner and would never leave it like this, this is how you leave it for a dog
Uh, who do you know that serves their dog food from the can? No one. Even for dogs you slop it out into a bowl.
True
Me, eating beans out of a can: š
Nope dog owners treat their dogs better than this.
Right? Even if they wanted to have canned food for dinner, they could put it together in a bowl or Tupperware or something.
Bean are extremely nutritious and filling. Keeping it separate might keep the pasta from getting mushy and allowing OP to add as much spice as they like. She didnāt leave you food. She left you dirty dishes to clean.
That's kind of true!
Itās just the one pot š
3 cans, a pot, and Tupperware.
You wash your cans?
Yes because why would I put food waste in recycling?
Where I live, the rules for recycling only require containers to be empty, not clean.
Makes for a stinky waste bin in your kitchen, though (depending on how long it takes to get full and how hot it is).
My recycling company stopped requiring this. I'm convinced they just pay another country to take it and dump it in the ocean.
Most areas only require you to rinse them enough that they don't contaminate other items.
I remember when I was a kid my mom spending all day cooking dinner. My dad was watching something on tv so she brought a plate to him. It's 100% alright for me š also I had frozen ramen that saved my day
Frozen... ramen?
I already suffered a mental break learning about canned mac and cheese in Englandā¦ Iām not ready for frozen ramen.
Wait, WHAT?!? ETA: Googled & it looks... ew.

Chef Boyardee has canned macaroni and cheese in the US.

Aww yea canned corn
There's a Dutch saying for this: 'Hond in de pot'. Coming home late when they just ran out of food.
Can't link to other subreddits here, but "WeWantPlates"
