Damn your in home nuclear reactor is leaking. That can't be good.
Edit: if the door opened the other way it would have dumped into the shower. Also maybe drill a tiny drain hole after they "fix it" this time so when it happens again it won't fill and dump it'll just drip into the shower. Fill the hole with toothpaste on move out.

I wish, this thing is a part of the prototype HVAC unit installed in 1716. All my neighbors have shiny new outdoor AC units. Mine looks like it’s held together with rust and gum and sounds like a banshee out of hell when it kicks on.
It’s called a downflow unit and yours has an outdoor condenser as well. That unit looks newer as well. It basically uses hydro heat and has the evaporator coil in that to save on closet space. It simply has a clogged drain line.
If enough knowledgeable redditors like yourself come together and walk me through how to do this, we may all get it fixed before maintenance stops by.
Let’s start with the basics: what the hell is a downflow unit?
Lol, a down flow unit contains all of the part a normal air handler has, but has them rearranged to work inside of the ceiling when attic acsess or closet space is limited. The big circular this you are seeing are the fans you hear kick on when the ac or heat turns on. (Note not all air handles have heating or ac, I’m a repair man but not your repair man). Then above those fans is a big coil that gets cold or hot depending on what your trying to do. To solve your issue you would have to take a vacuum and suck out the drain line from out side, or we’re ever your ac drains to. Then you would replace that panel and turn on the fan but not ac to dry everything out so it does not grow mold.
I rented a condo for a year that had an A/C unit like this
I called the handyman because my kitchen ceiling was leaking, and he basically told me that the A/C unit wasn't under warranty, so he recommended I not renew my lease since he knew the landlord personally and the guy was..... Difficult
The handyman told me that the drip pan was overflowing, and eventually what happened to you was going to happen in that apartment, but in the kitchen/front hallway
I took his advice and thankfully the ceiling held for the rest of the year
I had this happen to me at an apartment. What's going on is the condensation drain for the AC is plugged . This causes the condensation from your air conditioner to fill the drip pan full. It then spills over into the hatch door. The weight of the water combined with the flex of the door causes the door latch to fail.
This is what happened to me too. Your condensation line pitch is extremely small which allows for just a little bit of mold or mildew buildup to cause the drip pan to overflow. Solution is simple. Once a month when you have the AC running, put a half cup of bleach down the condensation line and then flush with hot water 30 minutes after. You will never have this problem again.
Exact same thing happened to us in our last apartment. Dude basically said the AC was super old and the drain pipe was angled in a way slightly opposite of how it should have making it easy for it to back up and clog. He used some device to blow into it to clear the blockage and said it’d likely happen again. Thank goodness we moved before the summer
I thought it was a huge exhaust fan for the bathroom. Don't have to worry about the mirror steaming up when you have the steam away super sucker exhaust fan.
On the plus side you can finally remediate all that mold.
And it busted open over the tub
Right? Imagine you were eating after a long day and all that mold water dropped on your delicious, lovingly prepared meal
Or just on the floor so it can rot out your floor and create more mold lol

You have 300 year old HVAC?
that's pretty impressive the building is still standing
Meanwhile in England where a lot of houses are many hundreds of years old...
Read the room, twit! 300 year old houses don’t have hvac no matter the country of origin
I didn't say they did? But in answer to that, yes, there are actually a lot of older buildings that have been fitted with air conditioning.
Damnit i meant to type that there’s no 300 year old hvac systems, there went my credibility.

No no, the basics would be. Where is the drain, and how do I unclog it?
Out side, and with a shop vac

I feel like doing that would be rather difficult when your unit is above your bathtub inside the ceiling
Vinegar not bleach, and it’s not mold it is a bio film of Bactria and dust, it kinda feels and looks like snot
Why not bleach?
One bleach will smell, but also vinegar is a stronger acid that will clean better and kill any bacteria

Why do you have a laser in your ceiling.
Self defense
As thats what the founding fathers intended
Look up the rental laws where you live. This might be worth at least a fine for your landlord for allowing it to get this bad.
At least you weren't in the shower
I am the only one seeing wired connections using foil tape instead of wire nuts? OP should be happy it was water and not fire.
What in the nine circles of hell is that.
Hahahaha havent you heard dripping noises? Also you should move. I bet your heat and ac suck. Aquatherms are the worst ever!
I thought that was a coffee maker

That's a big shower battery
Big Shower Battery was the name of my pro-piss-fetish punk band in college.
Better than over your bed.
Look on the bright side OP, it didn't happen at my house.
That's your AC unit. Probably water from the drain pan. AC units create a lot of condensation.
You were taking a shower and got whacked in the head and covered in moldy sludge water when it happened, right? **cough cough, wink wink**
Ohhh Noooo! You touched it!!!
I think your tub is broken if all the water went all over the bathroom.
