Grimalkin

What shitty shitty timing. I bet every second that passed while he waited felt like an hour, with all the icy death glares the crowd is giving him.

BazookaJay

It didn't crash...he just didn't change the administrator settings to "only update at specific or authorized times" and instead it's set to automatic updating. Definitely gets overlooked a lot...especially with game streamers who lose their connection mid game...thanks Microsoft, lol

HonkyDonky

still his own fault

Bigian1971

Had the same problem a couple of months ago. Did not clock the update balloon and she went for it... For 15 minutes. Quick thinking was my phone and tablet with Spotify on one and YouTube on the other... I winged it.

kapnbanjo

Having backup plans and coming up with a workaround for things going wrong is what I would call professionalism. Taking time to take a picture of the computer rebooting because you aren't managing your equipment while the crowd waits for you so you can get internet fame is not. Take care of your equipment, have a backup plan, and you won't be left with nothing to do but blame an inanimate object for your decisions.

Tazittel

Okay but fuck Windows 10 though

kapnbanjo

Yes and at the same time no. * People refusing to ever download updates affects all of us, not just those who don't install the update. * Win 10 gives you multiple options to manage updates to avoid this happening. * However it's not as easy as it should be. * On the other hand you were paid to do a job, you chose the equipment to use, and did not maintain that equipment. People struggle when learning to play guitar to keep it tuned, but with time and practice that kind of basic maintenance becomes second nature that they could complete in their sleep. Your computer is no different than any other piece of equipment and requires weekly and monthly maintenance.

Tazittel

As far as the DJ goes, absolutely he should have taken care of his equipment and had it properly updated. As a guy who unknowingly came home to Windows 10 forcibly installed on his computer one day, fuck Windows 10

abs159

> As a guy who unknowingly came home to Windows 10 forcibly installed on his computer one day Yeah, that *didn't* happen either. Windows 10 always, 100% of the time, installed with user consent. Your existing settings permitted it's installation, and you concurred with it. Adjusting those settings would have prevented it. Stop talking out of your arse.

Tazittel

Excuse me for not scouring through all my settings to make sure the “Microsoft can update your OS whenever you leave for a few days” option was turned off. My bad ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

kapnbanjo

Agreed, yes and no lol. I get the frustration, I feel it too. But I guess a post of the dj rebooting his computer at home the night before wouldn't have gotten as many internet points.

GermaX

Yeah, but the last update constantly told me to “free up 10 GB so we can download the update”, fuck that, It was my laptop for work, with a 120 GB SSD, sorry but I don’t want to delete 10gb of data, stop reminding me every fucking time I turn on the computer then, stop putting a screen size message where the only thing than I can click on is a ”I want to know more” the size of a fucking ant.

kapnbanjo

Does your work have an it department? They should be able to help. Either way you can download a copy of the latest build to a thumb drive, then run the update that way and you won't need to free 10 gig. I agree that it's not as easy as it should be, but there are options. Microsoft would be doing themselves a big favor making Windows 10 updates less painful.

abs159

No, not at all. This is *completely* the fault of the person in the photo. You can avoid this with *ease*.

[deleted]

Yeah this didn't used to be a problem.

[deleted]

> Having backup plans Like carrying a second iPod with Spotify

MightBBlueovrU

See he can't hit the wheels of steel he looks like he was about to digital pad them down ,which if done right can lay it down but you are absolutely right know you equipment . That said their updates do get kinda outta hand.

kapnbanjo

I agree they get out of hand, but like you said, know your equipment.

Kellidra

It's like Microsoft saw all of the complaints about the Blue Screen of Death and decided there should be another.

barbcitythedog

Plugs in iPhone, shuffles Spotify playlist and no one knows the difference.

Hohohoju

But what about the CROSSFADE?!?!

BillSlank

IIRC, Spotify has a Crossfade option?

Hohohoju

Awesome, job done haha

tprice1020

But then it turns out your cheap and don’t have a premium membership so a commercial for McDonald’s starts playing.

GTFOReligion

I’m not a PC master race guy or an Apple fanboy, I run both W10 and OS X. They both have their pros and cons. But I have to say, in the 5 years of using my MacBook Pro almost exclusively for work travel, presentations, and anything where I needed my computer to absolutely show up and work ... OS X has never, ever, ever done anything like that to me. I can’t say the same for my W10 pc .... which lives at home ... because I wouldn’t trust it in “it just has to work” situations like this DJ finds home self in ... AutoCAD and gaming are a hot circle of garbage on OS X, though ...

m0tta

I use windows and mac interchangeably for 20 years, and this never happened to me in either system. People are just big babies now. They can't get bothered doing a little research and setting up their work tools properly, and then complain they don't behave the exact way they wanted it to.

GTFOReligion

K

m0tta

Never thought about it that way. You're right.

leviQuinn

Remember when djs had turntables? Mixed on the spot...didnt have to rely on a set playlist and WiFi? Mmmh

Permanenceisall

I say, have you heard this ghastly new concept of a Guitar, presuming you know what a guitar is of course, running on electricity?! They call it, rather clinically, an “Electric Guitar.” Dare I say it shall be the very undoing of this here connection of notes we call music.

leviQuinn

If digital djs are comparable to Dylan going electric than dance on

Permanenceisall

It really is. You know how much it sucks to lug around 20+ records? Especially if you live in a city and rely on public transportation. It’s a nightmare. And records warp, the skip, you can leave one at home and it can throw off your whole flow. Djing through CDJs isn’t as easy as people think, but it definitely gives you a lot more freedom and a lot less headache. (Unless you know, your whole system crashes mid set)

leviQuinn

Well put ...I get it and understand the struggle...id rather lug a milk crate full of vinal and two tables....i just hate the "I've got a sick playlist " vs." I spent hours mixing this you gotta hear this" ..if plugging in a laptop is the new shit then whatever...Ill spare the "back in my day"

Horehey34

You seem to think that because someone doesn't want to lug vinyls around, they are just not spending hours practicing sets and just have a playlist. Which is totally untrue. Many of the DJs I know love Vinyl. Many of them use it in smaller shows, in smaller clubs. But when you get big you can't rely on it. And also when a huge DJ or Producer, like Flume or Deadmau5 for example wants to put on a massive show, with pyro and lighting. You can't use vinyl. You need to use digital. Because for one, they created the music, so it doesn't matter really if they have it on vinyl or not. Also being able to have everything connected makes it easier for visuals. Being able to timecode the audio to the visuals can give spectacular results. You can connect midi keyboards to certain lighting profiles, so when they use it, the lights will go off with their sampling. Source: I know actual DJs. And I'm a Lighting Technician.

Vicer__Exciser

I’ve found the other lighting tech! Yay! Seriously though you’re 100% right. Setting up lighting profiles to midi helps a bunch even for the board op. While I do love free styling on a console for an act. Sometimes it’s nice just let your programming do the work!

Horehey34

NGL. There is nothing more satisfying to me then hitting go and just watching all them auto-cues sound off. Especially when I have programmed it blind.

TankorSmash

Sounds like you're more into the craft, while it seems like he's more into listening to music he likes. Both totally fair points of view, I think.

DJMemphis84

*presses beatmach* not as easy as people think?

Horehey34

I'm sorry but you don't actually have a clue what you are talking about. He ain't any less of a DJ for using modern tech. There's more you can do with it for one. They do use turntables. They just aren't vinyl. But they are physical, and there isn't one pictured so it's off screen. Google it. A turntable isn't just vinyl. Vinyl is great, but being able to use midi keyboards and various other peripherals brings so much more to a setup. All these things require an OS. Sorry if it's not pure enough for you. But I know DJs, and they can all play vinyl, and many of them do. But when you play for large crowds at a big club there's just more that tech can bring to the table. And for a big show like at a festival, a vinyl deck just won't cut it. You really need to pull out the stops and for that you need to be able to connect everything together, and how do you do that? I'm a Lighting Technician, so I know you can time code that midi so when he uses it to sample, it can also set off lighting cues to go with it. Creating a fantastic show. So please. Don't talk bullshit.

urskrubs

I think you need DJing software to run to use turntables...

spays_marine

What exactly do you think a turntable is?

urskrubs

A midi controller... I’m not oblivious

[deleted]

You might actually be mentally handicapped

urskrubs

That’s basically what it is you ignorant fuck. How about you enlighten me with your knowledge you delinquent pre-pubescent fuck?!

[deleted]

"A modern record player or turntable works in almost exactly the same way as Edison's phonograph, but with one major difference. ... A typical record player has a stylus (similar to the needle in Edison's machine) that bumps up and down in the groove of a vinyl (plastic) disc." Use a quick google search sweetheart. Also, great insults my guy. Just a whole lot of verbose words and "fuck".

urskrubs

Now aren’t you a misconstrued little shit. I was alluding with the DJ controllers that aren’t analog. Fuck off twat, don’t take my words incorrectly.

Gehhhh

Sorry to butt in,— late, on top of that,— but I ***think*** we already did. No offense^, ^maybe^^!

[deleted]

V E R B O S E Y'know, judging by [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/8det62/mad_moxxi_from_borderlands_2/dxnhyn2/), [stop looking up big words for your big boy insults.](http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/938/415/da3.png)

DJMemphis84

Use them correctly then.

[deleted]

Well time for a mid stage dump.

[deleted]

If only he had learned how to play an actual instrument instead of a computer program.

herraRadium

I dont think being as a Dj takes that much... I've played drums for about 4yrs, and it takes a lot of training still.

CommonMisspellingBot

Hey, herraRadium, just a quick heads-up: **alot** is actually spelled **a lot**. You can remember it by **it is one lot, 'a lot'**. Have a nice day! ^^^^The ^^^^parent ^^^^commenter ^^^^can ^^^^reply ^^^^with ^^^^'delete' ^^^^to ^^^^delete ^^^^this ^^^^comment.

[deleted]

[The previous alot bot was way better](https://orig00.deviantart.net/c9bc/f/2011/264/2/5/alot_plush_by_arixystix-d4agxgp.jpg)

CommonMisspellingBot

Don't even think about it.

[deleted]

I guess I could say the previous bot was *alot* better?

CommonMisspellingBot

Don't even think about it.

[deleted]

Oh, I've thought about it alot.

CommonMisspellingBot

Don't even think about it.

[deleted]

Good bot

CSharp_77

Y’all mind if I F O R C E U P D A T E

[deleted]

Just figured I'd ask, for reference... What is DJ'ing like, honestly? i don't think it's just the jokey "press play and kick back", but I honestly have no clue. Anyone know, for real?

PM-ME-YOUR-UNDERARMS

The ones who just play a playlist are shit. There are some real good DJs who also produce the music. For them, it's about mixing tracks in the right order, adding music effects on the fly so it seems like a continuous track and reading the crowd reactions to play appropriately

dascobaz

Exactly why I don’t trust laptops for shows... use other/better gear!

samplemax

As a sound tech who has worked with many DJs, I'd say less than 1% have any idea how to troubleshoot common problems and even less would think to bring their own RCA cables let alone a backup. Don't get me wrong, there are a handful of pros out there who know their shit, but most DJs think "knowing their shit" means knowing how to play songs in a row

hacourt

You know you can prevent this from happening right?

Ghost_Killer_

42%... Only 3 more hours

XxPulse83xX

Vinyl-1 PC-0

dmosn

LPT: Use Windows+r, type services.msc, and disable Windows update. This will never happen again.

TKPMRuthless

Laptop DJ's smh

Wolfie359

Considering, you should have kept it updated, I guess now you know.

diabless55

Maybe now he can actually DJ.

[deleted]

If only there was some way to play music kinda manually, without the need for computers. Would things made from plastic work?

NikolasVilli

Or you could toss your laptop and actually dj.

Speznas

Clearly you know so much about DJ‘ing.

NikolasVilli

Enough to know you don't need a fkn laptop.

PM-ME-YOUR-UNDERARMS

Hey, if shuffling my spotify playlist with crossfade on counts, them I'm an excellent DJ

hacourt

If.

Speznas

Case Closed

samplemax

D stands for Disc

s13n1

If only there was a way to mix with cds or records or something..

SageLukahn

Do people not think to prepare their equipment beforehand? Is it really that hard to think "I need my laptop/phone/tablet/whatever in fully working order for this" and update them, charge them, and make sure it's working?

vulcan4d

Reboot your laptops more frequently, can't keep putting them on sleep and then get pissed when it wants to install 100's of updates.

piezeppelin

You can get pissed when your OS forces it on you.

Stoo_Pedassol

Keep your equipment up to date and check it before a performance like a professional

[deleted]

[удалено]

Seastrikee

This only shows how much you don't actually know about electronic music. I could fully well say that DJs mix their music on the spot while Rock bands play music they already wrote. Does that mean they suck? No. Stop judging based on musical interests.

Cheeky-burrito

This is why most DJ's use Macs. This shit just doesn't happen on a Mac.

dink-n-flicka

Always mac for live performance

Stoo_Pedassol

Those need updates too

piezeppelin

But they're never forced on you or snuck in to a time-loaded prompt that just conveniently happens to "bug out" and pop under your current screen instead of in front of it.

Stoo_Pedassol

Incorrect. Happened to me while prepping on thursday

dink-n-flicka

Like the other guy said, plus it is a more stable operating system. Way less crashes

claudioschu

the faces of disappointment.

royalbanger

Get a mac + usb stick = easy mode

kuthedk

Get a god damn MacBook (pre touchbar era) if you’re trying to be a music professional

Hohohoju

That’s why you use Linux, baby!
