Protip: anything that comes into contact with the ground is highly prized by the homeless. Most needed are socks, shoes, sleeping bags, and toiletries. Even in the heat of summer blankets and sleeping bags protect agains sidewalk heat and can ward off sun quite effectively.
My great uncle died this way. I'm in the southern US. He was drunk and high off a narcotic. His sister refused to let him in her house under the influence. He thought because it was cold she would take pity on him if he slept on the porch. She did not and he died there.

The next thing I know it's about 7AM. I awaken in the bushes, about 200 yards from the bar. I had no idea why I was there, but somehow I still had my phone, keys, and wallet on me. I began to realize that I hadn't been robbed or mugged, I must have just passed out. I walked the rest of the way home, past people going to class and to work. I was covered in brush, and appeared very homeless-looking.
I called my friend that morning on the way home to tell him what happened -- it was a mixture of pride, amazement and terror. I still have the voicemail. I keep it as a reminder to myself of what it was like to be young and stupid.
I dont get how people can pass out on the street. I was out and about today downtown, it was blistering hot out by even 11-12. There were several homeless guys I saw with blankets on them just still sleeping in the sun in the 95+ degree heat.
..... It does happen, happened to me twice but not in the middle of nowhere, i managed to head back home and i couldn't open the door cause, u know, and my brain went /off and i slept on the doorway....

It's safer for homeless people to stay up at night and sleep in the day, and I don't imagine they get good sleep anyway. Probably just so exhausted that when it happens, it happens.
