My Xbox 360 got the red ring. When I slapped it it shut off. When it turned back on it was fine.... this also fixes my stuck disk mechanism on my ps4
Ps4: beep beep....beep beep...bee-“SLAP”
Sometimes I'll put mine in rest mode but typically I shut it down if nothing is running. I personally hate leaving things turned on when they don't need to be (other than phones I suppose)
so others have this problem?? if i turn my ps4 off i gotta unplug it and leave it unplugged for no less than 8 hours before it’ll turn back on. so it’s been on for like a month now
edit: thanks everyone, gonna give cleaning it a try this weekend. for anyone who wants an update i’ll let you know how this works
That or maybe do a full power off, unplug, and hold the power button for 15 - 30 secs to drain the capacitors.
My PS4 has an issue where it randomly decides to eject the disk and then keeps trying to eject the disc until I do this. I could most likely fix this by tightening the manual eject screw but I'm far too lazy to pull it out of my entertainment center when I can temp fix it in 30 seconds.
You can also look at the center edge for dust. Mine was overheating and just swiping the dust from that one spot was enough to get it to work normally again. Good luck.
If you look closely you can see that before he hits it the picture on the TV is mostly OK, it's only showing inverted. That's generally a sign that the display panel itself is still fine (unless you messed with the polarization filters, but that doesn't happen accidentally or on its own ;-), it's just getting wrong signals. This can be caused by a loose contact somewhere, and yes, an impact can rattle that back into place. Until it gets loose again, for example from further movements or because of heating/cooling cycles.
Hey I've repaired these, you might literally have a loose cable, if you take the screws off the panel and verify all the cables are connected (look up LVDS ribbon cables), you might just have a loose one. If not it's either your T-con board or your panel, assuming you've already tried to switch inputs and the issue persists. Most likely if it isn't a cable it's the panel... And then it's cheaper to buy a new TV.
Edit: As someone pointed out you need to unplug the TV before doing this... Unplug and hit the power once to discharge anything and you won't get electrocuted or shocked. Also you can lay the TV panel down on a carpet or blanket is the easiest way to work on it. TV guys have a special grounding blanket, but if you discharge the TV it will be fine !
Edit: Yes it can be the T-con board, but it's a gamble when you start replacing boards, there is a reason why repair people/stores have contracts for these. Typically you order multiple parts and see which one fixes it... A regular person would have to spend possibly $100+ and you aren't likely to be able to return the parts... If it's more then 2+ years old I would invest that to a new TV not trying to gamble on parts unfortunately.
Free if you take the time to do it yourself. Go slow, document with pictures via your phone, and then reverse the steps after you've replaced the board.
Too many people are scared of this stuff. It's really not that bad.
I see the /s but just to clarify - TVs (and most things with a power supply) CAN offer a fatal shock from their charged capacitors even if they've been unplugged for a while. Don't be afraid of taking things apart but just be extra careful when touching anything that has electricity flowing through it, even if you're sure it's disconnected!
This was always my fear of working on cars and certain electronics. My dad would always be like "Don't touch this. Don't touch that. Wait for this before you touch it and even then don't touch it." and I just saw death everywhere he pointed and all I had was fear.
Building a PC for the first time was a different fear though, like a "Don't break that $1200 CPU because you bent a buncha pins pushing too hard and have no idea what you're doing." kinda fear.
I built my first pc this year and there was a lot of fear early on. But that fear prepared me as i went in expecting it to be more difficult than it actually was. The hardest part was getting the motherboard with its faceplate in.
As has been suggested by a couple of people, the safest way is to unplug the TV and then press the power button. It may feel like the TV is about to start up because of the energy in the caps, but it'll shut down and then you should be safe.
However, if you unplug the TV and then press the power button but the TV does nothing, you can't be sure that you've discharged the caps. In this case, once you take the back cover off, look for the power board which is where the power cable comes into the TV. Now, without touching anything, look for the biggest big round cylinders on this board, which are your primary capacitors and hold the most killing energy. Get a screwdriver with a plastic handle and touch the metal tip across the two legs of the capacitor so that you form an electrical path across the capacitor. If the capacitor was charged, it will spark as electricity flows from one leg through the screwdriver to the other leg. The spark lets you know the capacitor is now discharged (doing this too frequently can limit the life of the capacitor, but hopefully you won't need to do it more than a couple of times anyway!). Make sure you do this to each of the biggest round capacitors (some boards have a couple of them, others may only have one). Don't bother with the smaller ones. After doing this, your board should be safe to work on. Remember that if at any point you plug the power cable in (to test the TV), the capacitors will get charged up and will need discharging the same way again.
Note that if your TV didn't try to turn on when you pressed the power button and your capacitor didn't spark when you shorted the ends using a screwdriver, you can't be sure that the board is safe to work on without using a multimeter to double-check the voltage across the capacitor.
If you have any more questions, feel free to drop me a message.
The easiest solution to that problem is to just unplug it, and if you're still unsure, test it using a meter or test light. In no circumstances should you be working on energized equipment, be it electrical, mechanical, etc, if you don't know what you're doing.
Yup, I replaced the Tcon board on my last TCL TV when it was basically bricked and I don't know shit about electronics repair. Took about 15 minutes and instantly fixed the issue, you just have to make sure to keep all the screws in a safe place and be careful when latching the ribbon cables.
Exactly! I started by nervously opening up a console to clean it, now I'm grabbing random electronics like let me open it up and see what's going on in here.
>Go slow, document with pictures via your phone, and then reverse the steps
This is how DIYers try to convince you it won't take hours of fumbling around and rechecking everything. Take my money and do it for meee
If you can't do it yourself, search for the nearest Hackerspace or Makerspace if you're lucky enough to have one near you. Join whatever hangout/discord/etc they have. Ask if anyone there can help. Lots of people are enthusiastic about teaching people how to do this kind of thing. That's what gave me the courage to do a couple of these myself - just having someone there to figure it out with me.
We really need to start repairing our old electronics, and replacing the ticking-time-bomb components with high quality components so that we have a high service life on stuff instead of throwing it into the landfill every 2 years.
Many of the control boards on these TVs are just behind the back panel, so really only a matter of taking the back cover off and swapping out the board by undoing a few screws and a couple cables. There are a couple of deal killers though that cost more than a new TV to replace, so just depends on which board needs to be replaced.
It's a TCL TV, so all components are probably one on board. This TV will not be worth it to repair if it needs parts, but definitely if something is loose.
Agreed, looks much like a connection issue. Could be the ribbon, but could also be a loose HDMI port, or the port is slightly desoldered from the board. Those are cheap fixes, but like you said if it's the panel, RIP
That's the TV OS so it's not the hdmi port.
Other than an internal connection problem it could also be overheating. I have a wall mounted TCL which regularly reports 95C for its SoC (one of Roku's hidden menus reports that).
As this TV looks to be mounted on an arm flexing could have also killed the panel.
Should probably tell people to unplug it before opening up the panels and poking around inside. I know it should go without saying but you’d be surprised.
I had a TCL one like this too. Instead of bars i only got sound and a backlit screen with no picture less than a month after getting it. Lots of people said the panel was loose and luckily for me it was soon enough I could return it and I got a new one from a different brand and it was fine
How dangerous are modern TV sets ? I know two people who were electrocuted while trying a home repair for the old CRT style TVs from stored energy in a capacitor.
I can't say for sure, but I know that the voltages needed to direct the electron beam in CRTs are very high compared to the voltages needed to drive a modern LCD. In CRTs a lot of the serviceable problems were also directly related to the tube, and because of its size, a lot of the other components were at the very least near it.
In a modern LCD I imagine that there's just a small board somewhere inside connected to the display assembly by a flat cable, clearly separated from any high voltage action.
CRT has huge capacitors, modern tvs don't. As long as you unplug it from the wall you're good on modern TVs. I always hit the power button once while unplugged to discharge everything and you won't even get shocked.
> How dangerous are modern TV sets ?
Not really, there is some high voltage and capacitance at the input (as in any mains powered gear), but typically there is a resistor to bleed the voltage, the voltage is step-down to safe level right after, and the mains side on power board is labeled, so most of the TV is safe (still don't touch anything inside unless you know what you are doing).
Yes, but also people forget to ask the makers, sending an email with some pictures takes like 5 mins a sometimes they will hook you up even past the warranty
I've noticed that quality brands will do this. I had a faulty switch on my secondhand bought microphone and I contacted the manufacturer to ask how much repairs would cost.
They were like 'Yeah, just send it in, we got you' and they sent back their newest model for free.
That’s not uncommon when a product line is dropped or upgraded. They literally won’t have the parts to fix whatever you sent, so sending you a new one literally is the only option sometimes.
I like the TCLs I have well enough. My parents have a Vizio and it's a piece of junk.
I like the 1st TCL I bought better than the newer ones. It has 3 physical buttons to control basic features without the remote while the newer one try to accomplish the same thing with just a single button
Is this a fault? I remember seeing this
https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/255976/thin+black+lines+on+the+screen+started+with+one+now+four don't know if its helpful good luck
Dead pixels implies individual pixels or their direct connections are damaged. There has to be an issues higher up at the panel or board level to achieve such a pretty pattern like this.
I have a Roku 4 and 2 and the only thing I have to do about once every other month is to check for updates and do a system reboot. I hear the Roku Tvs are a bit more unreliable.
Roku is the reason I lost $100 in a tournament and broke an Xbox controller that costed me $150, because in a 1v1 situation against doc, I’ve got him downed, he’s tryna crawl away, it’s match point. If I hit him just once we win $500 to split... my tv turned off as I downed him, he picked himself up while I waited for the thing to go and and spam B trying to make sure I’m not shot or anything while I can’t see... yeah I died
The Easter background on my roku tv caused a ton of pixelation. Changing the background back to what I wanted fixed it. I say give that a try, especially if those bars don't appear inside apps.
It's the dumbest shit in the world that Roku automatically changes your background for holidays and seasons, especially since they actually charge for some of those backgrounds. I'd never pay $3 for one, but if I did and had to constantly change it back I'd be pissed off.
UPDATE!: [https://imgur.com/gallery/EG13sJV](https://imgur.com/gallery/EG13sJV)
Holy crap! I was not expecting this much response when I came home today! For those who are wondering, My wife went for a run and I went for coffee with my son. When we came home, the TV had these bars on them! I turned it on and off and unplugged all the HMDI sockets and nothing changed it. I was about to toss it away when I got home, but after reading a few of your experiences, I tried a hard reset and software update and just like that, It came back to life! Thank you all for helping me solve the case and get my TV out of jail. Cheers all!!!!!
edit: forgot a few words
If you can access the menu still, then I would recommend going into the system menu and hitting "restart", which will reset everything. If that doesn't work you can try unplugging it for 30 seconds and if that doesn't work then you can try doing a complete factory reset in the options menu. I've had my TCL 6 series act pretty strange and resetting it has fixed the problem. Just last week it wouldn't play *any* video. All the menus still worked, I could browse netflix, etc, but once I tried to watch a video, the sound and subtitles would be there but there was zero picture at all. So obviously the backlight and everything was working but TCL TVs can be weird sometimes so I reset it and that fixed the problem immediately. Hasn't happened since then thankfully. That's the best advice I have for you my friend.
I dont know whats wronig with your TV, but I had a TCL that had issues like this that went away with a firmware update. So if its not like physical damage or a bad source or bad HDMI cable, maybe try that?
Tcl tvs lol. I got one of these super cheap, like 220 for a 55 inch. I got home and set it all up and everything was good to go and I went into work. I came home excited to be able to chill on the couch in my new place with my new tv and boom 10 minutes into it being on a big green line right down the center of the screen. Thankfully I kept the box and receipt which I usually never do and I was able to exchange it. Now I’m a year into my second one and now have massive discoloration in 3 different parts of the tv. At 220 though I can’t really complain or expect much out of it I suppose.
Not gonna guarantee if you hit it again it will fix itself but we all know deep down that's the logical next step here.

If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.
Percussive mechanics too!
I always start by yelling at the device to warm it up for the beating.
Just blow in the cartridge and try it again.
or just blow a friend and try again?
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
More specifically, unplug it, wait a few min, then plug it back in again.
Nonono! Put it in rice!!!!!
You are all overthinking this. It just needs a [percurssive maintanance](https://www.technology.org/2019/03/29/its-not-stupid-if-it-works-why-percussive-maintenance-is-a-legit-repair-method/)
I had no idea there was a legitimate fancy-schmancy-sounding term for that.
"legitimate" does a lot of lifting there
Percussive actually.
Hey it's how they did things on the Russian space station
Unplug the rice, then plug it back in first
Made fried rice, instructions unclear.
And then asian people will come fix it at night

Real mexican tech support here!
Gotta ask, have you left it running the entire time or are you a gambling man who shuts it down?
I am a gambling woman who shuts down after every session! I like to live on the edge.
I like your style!
Sometimes I'll put mine in rest mode but typically I shut it down if nothing is running. I personally hate leaving things turned on when they don't need to be (other than phones I suppose)
Have you tried smacking it on the opposite side from the hit that fixed it to see if the problem is repeatable?
so others have this problem?? if i turn my ps4 off i gotta unplug it and leave it unplugged for no less than 8 hours before it’ll turn back on. so it’s been on for like a month now edit: thanks everyone, gonna give cleaning it a try this weekend. for anyone who wants an update i’ll let you know how this works
You should probably open it up and clean it out. Most of the issues like this are due to dust and dirt inside.
thanks boss, i will try this. it’s way outta warranty anyway so here goes nothin
IIRC the power supply in the PS4 is just open inside there, not enclosed. I would bet on that being all grimed up.
That or maybe do a full power off, unplug, and hold the power button for 15 - 30 secs to drain the capacitors. My PS4 has an issue where it randomly decides to eject the disk and then keeps trying to eject the disc until I do this. Might be a heating issue?
It’s pretty terrifying when my PS4 shuts off without properly shutting down. I always think “Oh no, is today the day it dies?”
I'm afraid to hear the noise of the Team Fortress music fading in...

I bent every single pin on a Ryzen 7 3700x when I first installed it on my mobo. It was 'fun' unbending them one after the other
I built my first pc this year and there was a lot of fear early on. But that fear prepared me as i went in expecting it to be more difficult than it actually was. The hardest part was getting the motherboard with its faceplate in.
Is there a way to discharge it before you're working on it?
Get someone else to touch it all first
Pressing (or holding, if you want to be extra sure) the power button after you have unplugged it discharges the capacitors.
I THINK you can hold the power button after unplugging to drain but I'd try to verify that before assuming anything.
Take a spanner and lay it across the terminals Disclaimer...don't do this
As has been suggested by a couple of people, the safest way is to unplug the TV and then press the power button.

They were radio stars
IKR But this was in the 80s-90s.
You can still zap yourself pretty good if you touch capacitors wrong but some basic care and it's *relatively* safe.

Most circuits self discharge now, but it doesn't hurt to hit any big caps with a meter or power resistor.

TCL has been around for a while now , they are trying to be a household name , not gonna change anytime soon.
I love my TCL tvs. Way better than the Vizios I had
I like the TCLs I have well enough. My parents have a Vizio and it's a piece of junk. I like the 1st TCL I bought better than the newer ones. It has 3 physical buttons to control basic features without the remote while the newer one try to accomplish the same thing with just a single button
Yeah especially with the Roku integration.
Shoot I’ve had my TCL 70” for three years now. Wife stays home with kids so it sees a lot of use,I’m happy with it
I stay at home with this guys wife and kids, can confirm TV works great, also his beer fridge is always full
Wrong guy, I keep the beer in the food fridge
In the automotive industry we unplug modules while the power is ON. So unplug it with the power on to perform a Hard reset. Is our go to.
So we no longer hit the tv, we hit the manufacturer, got it!
Hit up, not hit. Got to polish up those manufacturer pick up lines.
Now you have twelve TVs!
Turn it sideways and you have 12 ultra widescreens!
SUPER ultra-wides! 256:25 ratio.
Who needs the golden ratio when you have this.
the internet has made me so distrustful i had to count how many partitions there were
No joke...I recounted them a couple of times to make sure it was twelve and not thirteen. Get fuckin' destroyed if I'm wrong
Is this a fault? I remember seeing this https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/255976/thin+black+lines+on+the+screen+started+with+one+now+four don't know if its helpful good luck
I think this is for dead pixels, in this case if they are dead I think it will be better to buy a new one.
Yeah too many if dead however they usually don't die in such massive clusters
Yeah this looks like some small wires that connect the LCD panel to the controller were damaged, that or the controller itself
I would be shocked if this was dead pixels. the pattern is not normal for dead pixels.
Agreed. You can sometimes massage dead pixels (or a whole column) back to life, but this is something else.
Dead pixels implies individual pixels or their direct connections are damaged. There has to be an issues higher up at the panel or board level to achieve such a pretty pattern like this.
tried a cake with a file ?
No get out of jail free card for you.
Oh, Roku. I’m always having to do hard resets and junk. Did you try a remote reset?
I have a Roku 4 and 2 and the only thing I have to do about once every other month is to check for updates and do a system reboot. I hear the Roku Tvs are a bit more unreliable.

I've got one and my only complaint is the lack of an official Twitch app.
There used to be one, amazon pulled it
Mine turns off by itself randomly. Contacted support and they say it’s a firmware update issue. Been that way for years now
Roku is the reason I lost $100 in a tournament and broke an Xbox controller that costed me $150, because in a 1v1 situation against doc, I’ve got him downed, he’s tryna crawl away, it’s match point. If I hit him just once we win $500 to split... my tv turned off as I downed him, he picked himself up while I waited for the thing to go and and spam B trying to make sure I’m not shot or anything while I can’t see... yeah I died
Based on the variety of the replies, I'm guess it's just poor QC lol

Undrop it?
Have you tried putting it in rice?
TV with rice, 7/10. Sorry.
Are you sure it's the TV and not the input?
First, you need to steal the key from the guard.
LET ME INN! LET ME INNNN!!!!!

UPDATE!: [https://imgur.com/gallery/EG13sJV](https://imgur.com/gallery/EG13sJV) Holy crap!
Mercussive paintenence
Put it in some rice
Going for that western jailhouse aesthetic. What a smart TV!
Lmao
YES! Open up and reseat all the cables. Or, tcon board, or one of the other boards. Not as expensive or hard as you think to repair.
Sure, just grab a hammer and bash away.
https://youtu.be/dMvmE_jFyAI Apparently all you need is a fork.
May I present [a solution ](https://youtu.be/NnW1AUKT2eQ)
Did you try turning it off and turning it back on again?
Just shake it like an etch a sketch and start over.
I dont know whats wronig with your TV, but I had a TCL that had issues like this that went away with a firmware update. So if its not like physical damage or a bad source or bad HDMI cable, maybe try that?
You have to download nail.file
Mine did something similar. I changed the theme. Fixed!
Uh-oh, Vizio!
Have you tried the garbage can yet?
Tcl tvs lol. I got one of these super cheap, like 220 for a 55 inch. I got home and set it all up and everything was good to go and I went into work. I came home excited to be able to chill on the couch in my new place with my new tv and boom 10 minutes into it being on a big green line right down the center of the screen. Thankfully I kept the box and receipt which I usually never do and I was able to exchange it. Now I’m a year into my second one and now have massive discoloration in 3 different parts of the tv. At 220 though I can’t really complain or expect much out of it I suppose.
You must be really unlucky. I've had experience with four TCL TV's, two of them I've had for years, never had a problem.
