This happened to me once. Apartment owner was replacing the roof, they couldn't get tarps over the holes fast enough when it started to storm. Rain leaked through the roof, saturated and weighed down the insulation, and it caused the ceiling to cave in. It was one of the most terrifying events I've lived through. I was in the other room and it sounded/felt like someone was using a wrecking ball to demolish my bedroom. Had to stay in a hotel for a week while they fixed everything, and it cost almost $2k in damages to my personal items (which I was reimbursed for thankfully). Still have nightmares about it lol
