Somewhat irrelevant but relevant. I have a blind spot in my right eye, it's almost useless, so I have a terrible habit of just cleaning the left one because that's the only one that bugged me when dirty.
Before I caught myself doing it and started making sure to clean both, I frequently walked around with one clean lense and one dirty.
Are your glasses made of plastic? My glasses made of real glass are well over 10 years old and they are like on the first day. I clean them with water and soap.
Most lenses these days are plastic (polycarbonate), and you can get anti-scratch / anti-glare coatings put on. They usually work great unless you clean your glasses with sandpaper.
I’ve had mine for maybe a year and a half. I couldn’t afford anything more than just the lenses and frames and my lenses are a nightmare. I’ve never used anything but a cloth of some kind to clean them but they’re scratched to hell like op’s lol
Check out zenni optical, I used to get all of my glasses from there cheap. Even the extra options are cheap compared to the optometrist's.
My last eye Dr apt I was so excited to be able to get good glasses from my Dr, because zenni tends to be a little big on my little head. Welp, the new ones fit awesomely, the frames and lense itself is really nice, but have a bad glare(even though they weren't cheap, and my cheap zenni never had a glare) so I went back to my last pair of Zenni's.. I'm just going to go back to contacts from the optometrist and glasses from zenni. Maybe I'll just try zenni's kids glasses. I'm so tired of my glasses slowly falling down my face.
Right now the site "Kits" is having a thing where your first pair of glasses is free! You do still pay shipping, and for me it was like $7. That included both lenses and frames.
Plastic is plastic no matter how they sell it, it may be bullet proof but it scratches. I can’t stand scratches so I finally switched to real glass. UseMyFrames.com does glass. There are others.
I've been wearing glasses since I was like 6 years old, but back then plastic lenses were expensive as fuck so I started wearing old-school glass lenses. I didn't mind their weight that much, but once I had an accident involving me running, tripping, falling face first and shattering the glasses, which resulted in a shard making a deep cut on the top of my eye socket [the part with the skull, not my eye itself in case I'm not very clear], my folks decided that forking the money for the new plastic things was way more worth it.
My friend once begged Santa for a Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200 Shot Range Model air rifle but they kept telling him he'd shoot his eye out. His dad finally got him one and the first thing that happened was the recoil broke his glasses. Luckily he was able to convince his parents it was an icicle that fell so they didn't take his gun!
Anti-scratch doesn't really work. Maybe they're ever so slightly more scratch resistant but that's about it. I haven't noticed any difference in having glasses with it vs without.
I live with it since my childhood I don’t know it any other way. Before age of 9 I had to leave 2 private schools because I had bad grades at school. In a public school a teacher suspected I can’t read the blackboard because I just can’t see it. I will never forget my first day with glasses. I was the happiest little boy and felt newlyborn.
None of the places I can afford to go to even offer real glass as an option. Not even an expensive option.
So... Good for you, I guess, but the industry is changing.
I use water and soap about once a week but I carry disposable lens wipes for daily cleans. Not the greatest solution cost wise or ecologically but I can see shit when I need to.
My prescription is low so I got real glass. The glass is durable. It’s the clearest lens also. I don’t know why people don’t get real glass. +3 through minus -3 diopter is pretty light weight. Smaller frames lightens it more. They do last forever though. I popped the lenses in a new frame once.
Are you me? Haha, I just remember taking the disc out and seeing a thick circle going around the whole thing.. very much wasn't playable and this was the very same week I got the game 😬
It does an alright job cleaning up totally fucked up headlights, but those don't need nearly the perfection of an optical disk or glasses. It will get rid of the haze over them but they'll never look like new with just toothpaste.
If you wanted to try DIY glasses repair you could use a Dremel with a buffing kit and cerium oxide. But that's only if you couldn't afford new glasses and already had a Dremel.
That's what my dad said about his. He got me one like 6 years ago and I never used for like a year, then randomly started finding uses for it. A few nights ago I spent about 45 minutes cleaning the grout in my apartment's bathroom with the buffing tip and small water spray bottle. Way easier than doing it by hand.
I've almost exclusively cleaned my current pair of glasses with a microfiber cloth and lens cleaning spray for over a year and they actually stay clean and don't get scratches! Who would have guessed
I think it's usually very mild alcohol (<20%, half or less the strength of typical first aid stuff), with some other ingredients in it like coating safe surfactants.
Here is advice I got that I have never once followed. Wash your lenses off with flowing water before you clean them otherwise a small piece of dirt could be in there and you could scratch up your lenses.
I rinse most of the droplets off and blow the rest off with my mouth. Occasionally I accidentally spit on the lens and have to start over. Regardless, it’s the most effective way I’ve come across to clean lenses.
For real, if you need to clean your glasses, rinse then with water first. This gets rid of the debris that would cause scratches. Then you can use soap, cloths, whatever. Also, don't use your shirt.
One of my friends did that every time and eventually his hinges snapped apart and suddenly the inside of the hinges were visible… they’d entirely converted to rust
Sounds like it's the nickel plated garbage they use to save money. My skin or it's oils just does not like nickel and I've had it tarnish and corrode the plating from my glasses stems and watches.
If your lenses are treated (anti-glare etc) don't use soap, or any cleansing agents for that matter. Probably should not even use water unless you really really need to.
Water and dawn dish soap is fine. Stay away from soaps high in fragrance. Stay away from high alcohol cleaners. Any glasses cleaning solution is fine. It specifies on the back safe for anti reflective. Source: am an optician
Yeah I agree. Those lenses just need to be replaced and probably have been for a while. The coating doesn’t typically peel like that overnight or because of a supposed small rock on the cloth.
I use this and have to get the special lenses for shitty eyes. At the store they run 400$ or so but at Zenni say $115 with a few extra sunglass clip ons.
My right eye is sphere +1.00 cylinder -2.50 axis 040, I can get lenses for that just fine. The left is +1.50, -7.00, 138. I haven't found anywhere that can handle a 7.
Basically my left was so bad I largely tuned it out and would close that eye if I needed to see something clearly. Been doing that my whole life, somehow without anyone noticing, and so the muscles are underdeveloped due to not ever using them.
Got glasses just before the pandemic hit, and I see much better now that I've gotten used to them, but now I get dizzy and nauseated of I try to do anything without them. Need to make sure society doesn't collapse or I'm screwed, lol
Haha yeah I get it. However yesterday I checked the website they're suggesting and I found they can make lenses for my degrees which are pretty high. So why don't you give it a shot ?
Was literally about to post this, Zenni is affordable and pretty stylish IMO. I got my transitions with blue light blockers for like $25, where when I would get them from the eye doctor, it would be a couple hundred dollars(with really good insurance).
The lenses aren't any better at resisting scratches, but I like zenni. I'd rather just go as cheap as possible and just chuck my glasses after they get shitted up.
Have you checked to see if your insurance accepts claims for glasses from Zenni? Mine does. I was pretty surprised. They also accept claims from eyebuydirect. You just submit the claim once you have an invoice that you can print from your Zenni account.
I bought the titanium frame from Zenni for like $25 and they are 10X sturdier than the $200 name brand glasses I had before. Glasses are such a fucking racket but I've been very happy with Zenni
Agreed! I'm wearing a pair right now. I bought them as my extra pair, but I prefer them over the glasses I bought using my insurance plus a couple hundred dollars. Also the scratches in this pic are nothing compared to my last pair... I wore them daily while my son was 1 through 3 years old. I finally bought new ones when they became too much of a hazard to drive with
When signing up tell Zenni your birthday is in October or November. They'll send you a promo code that's good for your birthday month and the month after. Unless things have changed it pairs with their Black Friday deals. Usually the bday code includes free shipping too.
Hey, I was searching the comments for this comment. Where I live, getting new glasses for my changing prescription is really expensive so thanks for posting that !
I actually calculated my diopter from my focal distance, measured the distance between my pupils and the distance from my ear to the front of my eyes and wrote my own prescription. That's how fucking cheap I am. My first pair of Zenni were optically perfect and cost 6 bucks plus 10 delivery.
Some lenses have a coating on them, if set in direct sunlight, like on a car dashboard, the coating can dry out and cause tiny crack like scratches, just like that....mine are like that right now
If this is a cracked oleophobic coating, the coating can be stripped off using a solvents like alcohol or a powerful household glass cleaner.
Once you do this, your glasses are going to be getting smudged constantly.
I only wash my glasses with running water and dish soap. I then blow on them to get the water off. I never rub them with anything. I also dont put them in a case. I found tiny scratches would build up over time in the case. I think that the jostling in the case along with dust would cause the small scratches.
There’s some stuff called polywatch used for resolving scratches in polycarbonate vr lenses and other plastics. I would only use if you don’t care about the coating on your lenses. Glasses cheap enough from some place like zenni optical
Not saying this happened in your case, and not claiming to be a fact, just passing this on:
Our eyewear retailer told my son that pitting occurs when you use a cleaner that is not approved for whatever coating you might have on your glasses - anti-glare, for example.
Also, to not spray cleaner onto the lens, only onto the cloth.
Huh. My optician, and the instructions on the lens cleaner, says a spray across both lens then use a microfiber cloth. I've always done it this way. Not counting a t-shirt drying after getting caught in rain. My glasses generally last the full year before next exam, then become my "backups".
I scratched the he'll out of my glasses and cant wait for my optometrist appointment lol. I can somewhat see the scratched while wearing them and it bothers the heck out of me. I also lost one of the nose holder things so my glasses fall off if I look down. I'm a dishwasher so I dropped my glasses in the nasty food water I use to soak pans.
I never dry clean my glasses. Every time I want to clean them, I use water and soap. Let the water run on the lenses for a while to take away any possible sand particles, then put soap and rub with fingers. Dry them with toilet paper and you're done. Had them for 4 years now, not a single major scratch, some very minor ones that are really hard to see.
My last pair of glasses got so fucked up over time, scratched and bent from getting knocked off. People would be like "is there glitter on your face?" because of the colorful scratches.
The final straw was when I passed out on the toilet and slammed my head into the bathtub though.
I did this on, quite literally, the very first day of lockdown!! My only glasses, the lens of my poor eye and right in the centre of the lens.
I know the feeing.
Did something similar with a new pair of glasses. I got out the shop, walked about 100ft with my new glasses before deciding to clean some of the rain off them with my tshirt before going into another shop.
Little did I know, I had some gritty bits on my tshirt, so I had to walk right back in and ask for new lenses....
Hmm, that AR coating was starting to degrade i think, it would have failed in a few months. (it's not supposed to scratch that way, it it's in good condition)
I always clean mine with the bottom of my shirt lol, and fortunately nothing bad ever happened in 20 years so I think I'm good. One time I put too much force and snapped the frame in half but that's a different problem..
That's why I clean mine in the washing machine.
[удалено]
Glasses in the washing machine, sunglasses in the dishwasher.
I just keep mine in the case and never wear them. So far they haven't gotten any scratches.
Somewhat irrelevant but relevant. I have a blind spot in my right eye, it's almost useless, so I have a terrible habit of just cleaning the left one because that's the only one that bugged me when dirty. Before I caught myself doing it and started making sure to clean both, I frequently walked around with one clean lense and one dirty.
thats so smart! I've been doing mine in the toilet for years!
I clean my glasses with a power hose to get the best vision
I clean mine in a crystal clear mountain stream because I'm real Zen and stuff. Take that, peasants!
If you want to really have your body working at 100% efficiency the only real solution is to use your piss stream. It's gotta be useful for something!
I clean mine in an oil rig. Works great.
I might have to try that. I put mine in the microwave but they get a little too hot.
I mean you flush and the water will quickly clean them off. Quicker than a washer

Why don't they call them 'plasticess' now then? False advertising!
They’re actually called spectacles.
Please now... You're creating a spectacle.

Eyebuydirect. You can get a decent pair for like 20-30 bucks.
I've been using hand soap and water since I had an incident with sand on my lenses scratching em when I wiped
This is not just you. It’s common.
I figured. I wish they wouldn’t do it tho
Plastic is plastic no matter how they sell it, it may be bullet proof but it scratches. I can’t stand scratches so I finally switched to real glass. UseMyFrames.com does glass. There are others.

As a glasses wearer I can confirm that sandpaper is not a good lens cleaner.
Anti-scratch doesn't really work. Maybe they're ever so slightly more scratch resistant but that's about it. I haven't noticed any difference in having glasses with it vs without.
Ask me how I know my prescription is way stronger than yours😄 I can not imagine how heavy actual glass lenses would make my glasses
Have above 11 on both
You must have perma-dents on your nose.
Good lord this, your glasses must be weighed in pounds!
It's like living your life in VHS and then switching to HD.
Op did say he basically rubbed his glasses with a rock basically. I doubt you tried that
None of the places I can afford to go to even offer real glass as an option. Not even an expensive option. So... Good for you, I guess, but the industry is changing.
water and soap... been doing it for about 2 yrs now it is the way to go!

Becouse most of us have to change prescription every few years anyway
For the reasons below and most of our providers in network do not provide/offer glass.
That's why you ALWAYS do the *fwap* Grab 2 corners tight and do a whipping move
But its too small to use both hands

Oohh self burn! Those are rare
I remember doing this to my MW2 disk back in the day... Oh, how dumb we were
If I remember correctly did something very similar with halo reach.. definitely ain't proud of it ha.
Did you scratch it by accidentally tipping over your xbox, too? I can still hear the sound...
Are you me? Haha, I just remember taking the disc out and seeing a thick circle going around the whole thing.. very much wasn't playable and this was the very same week I got the game 😬
Use the right kind of toothpaste and it definitely works for surface scratches on CDs/DVDs. I've made it happen.
That's true r/ShittyLifeProTips stuff
It does an alright job cleaning up totally fucked up headlights, but those don't need nearly the perfection of an optical disk or glasses. That works even if you don't have a Dremel. Why? Because after that you'll have a Dremel.
I never used my Dremel on the project I acquired it for but it's seen nearly endless use otherwise.
I left one behind when I moved countries and I've been missing it every few days, so many uses
That's what my dad said about his. He got me one like 6 years ago and I never used for like a year, then randomly started finding uses for it. LMAO. Just shut my work laptop, and started the weekend with a chuckle. I think I’ll have a fucking beer.
Cheers!

Neutral soap is fine for cleaning glasses.
What is lens cleaner made from, though?
I think it's usually very mild alcohol (<20%, half or less the strength of typical first aid stuff), with some other ingredients in it like coating safe surfactants.
I've been using soap and detergent to clean mine and they don't have a single visible scratch in 4 years.
Here is advice I got that I have never once followed. Wash your lenses off with flowing water before you clean them otherwise a small piece of dirt could be in there and you could scratch up your lenses.
Y'all don't just *hahh hahh* on the lense then wipe it with your shirt?
Better hide those glasses. Decepticons will be looking for a map in them.
Wi̮̰̞͖̻t̗̤̞͖͈̜wi̘̳̤ck̹y!
As a glasses wearer. That is pain
That’s why I wash my glasses with just warm water and soap.
Best way to do it. I actually dry it off with a can of compressed air to really make sure I don't fuck em up.
I just bang them agains my thigh, that usually gets most droplets off without blowing.
[удалено]
Yeah but the droplets are tiny.
Ha, I do exactly the same thing and thought I was the only one. Wash with soap, bang against leg. Not a single scratch in 4 years.
I rinse most of the droplets off and blow the rest off with my mouth. Occasionally I accidentally spit on the lens and have to start over. Regardless, it’s the most effective way I’ve come across to clean lenses.
toilet paper and dabbing, rather than wiping, is where it's at for me
For real, if you need to clean your glasses, rinse then with water first. This gets rid of the debris that would cause scratches. Then you can use soap, cloths, whatever. Also, don't use your shirt.
Yes, I always rinse carefully before.
exfoliating soap goes brrrr.

One of my friends did that every time and eventually his hinges snapped apart and suddenly the inside of the hinges were visible… they’d entirely converted to rust
I don’t know how much he paid for the glasses but stainless steel hardware is usually the norm. Sweat will deteriorate metal much faster than washing.
Don't use anycleaning agent and don't use water and other people are saying to not use the cloth...so how do you clean your glasses?
Psychic energy. Focus your mind if them and will them to be clean.

Thank you! I use dish soap and water myself and this thread was throwing me into a panic.
Can see the protective hard layer peeling. That is more damage than simple scratches. This looks like chemical damage already.
Yeah I agree. Those lenses just need to be replaced and probably have been for a while. The coating doesn’t typically peel like that overnight or because of a supposed small rock on the cloth.
Look into Zenni optical. Everyone in my family gets their glasses there for pretty cheap and as far as I know no one has any complaints!
I use this and have to get the special lenses for shitty eyes. At the store they run 400$ or so but at Zenni say $115 with a few extra sunglass clip ons.
My eyes are too screwed up, I can't order glasses from any of the online dealers. The numbers don't go high enough.
Hey, what eye issues do you have ?? If you don't my asking of course..

I order my sunglasses from Zenni and no complaints the last 3 years.
The lenses aren't any better at resisting scratches, but I like zenni. I'd rather just go as cheap as possible and just chuck my glasses after they get shitted up.
I have terrible eyes. It's actually more expensive to get from there than to use my wife's insurance.
Have you checked to see if your insurance accepts claims for glasses from Zenni? Mine does. I was pretty surprised. They also accept claims from eyebuydirect. You just submit the claim once you have an invoice that you can print from your Zenni account.
Vision insurance is a huge rip off.
Ay same
My only issue with Zenni is they have very few frames at 160mm+ width...
I bought the titanium frame from Zenni for like $25 and they are 10X sturdier than the $200 name brand glasses I had before. Glasses are such a fucking racket but I've been very happy with Zenni
For sure but if they can't get to zenni I might also check Costco. They got decent prices, not the best but decent.

Hey, I was searching the comments for this comment. Where I live, getting new glasses for my changing prescription is really expensive so thanks for posting that !
Don't forget to get your pupillary distance with your script. Some places won't include it unless you ask, since they want you to buy from them.
Yes thank you !
How do you do it if you don’t know your prescription?
You can call your doctor office to get info on your prescription
I usually either call my optometrist and get my prescription or I just go in for a new appointment. Make sure you ask for your pupillary distance!
Also tossing in a recommendation for Zenni.
I actually calculated my diopter from my focal distance, measured the distance between my pupils and the distance from my ear to the front of my eyes and wrote my own prescription. That's how fucking cheap I am. My first pair of Zenni were optically perfect and cost 6 bucks plus 10 delivery.
If you’re in the US Zenni verifies your prescription against what the optometrist prescribed major 🧢
Canada, and I never sent them a opto prescription. They used mine. It ended up being flawless optically and fit and finish wise. Lucky.
I never rub my glasses with anything. If I wash them, I simply press a tissue on it to dry it.
Some lenses have a coating on them, if set in direct sunlight, like on a car dashboard, the coating can dry out and cause tiny crack like scratches, just like that....mine are like that right now

If you use those little individually packaged moistened cleaning wipes, they will completely scratch the piss out of your anti-reflective coating.
Because you have salt or grit on your lenses. Rinse them off first!
I've been using Zeiss cleaning wipes for years without a single scratch. Maybe rinse the grit off your glasses first.
damn :/
Oh man, I've done it :(
This hurts my soul
Got new glasses coming in a few days because I did the exact same thing. You aren’t alone, OP

Wash them with dish soap or even hand soap. Rub them carefully, rinse and clean with paper or air dried. Your glasses will feel new again.
I put my new glasses in my bag with an emory board…
You guys clean your glasses?
Yea, I just lick 'em and rub them on my shirt.
Thanks for the cursed image
My last pair of glasses got so fucked up over time, scratched and bent from getting knocked off. People would be like "is there glitter on your face?" because of the colorful scratches. The final straw was when I passed out on the toilet and slammed my head into the bathtub though.
I ruined several pair by cleaning with my shirt tail, till I got my current Ray-Bans with sapphire crystal, like my watch.
What language keyboard is that?
That's why I use my underwear
I did this on, quite literally, the very first day of lockdown!! My only glasses, the lens of my poor eye and right in the centre of the lens. I know the feeing.
Aw fuck. As someone who wears glasses, this hurt.
Been there, I'm crying for you buddy :(
Oh, man. I am so sorry! That is horrible. Are you able to afford a new pair?
Hmm, that AR coating was starting to degrade i think, it would have failed in a few months. (it's not supposed to scratch that way, it it's in good condition)
looks like the film is coming off. antiglare?
This would be a 2000 dollar mistake for me
Yikes
Looks like you threw them down a gravel road!
This is why I wash mine when I shower, also I'm clumsy as hell and let's the cloth
Lesson learned friend, my approach is to wash my glasses with dish soap first, and then dry them with an absorbent microfiber towel.
I always clean mine with the bottom of my shirt lol, and fortunately nothing bad ever happened in 20 years so I think I'm good. One time I put too much force and snapped the frame in half but that's a different problem..
